Great idea, too bad it doesn't work
I have a 15 year old Garmin GPS that can capture GPS satellites quickly in my backyard. I have a new Garmin Nuvi that can capture GPS satellites inside my house! For some reason the Celestron engineers decided to use some ancient GPS technology that can only capture the GPS satellites if you are in outer space actually sitting on one of the GPS satellites.
Too many conditions
We have enough open sky for DirectTV, but apparently not enough for this item to pick up the GPS satellites.I manually entered my latitude and longitude only to get a big M for magnetic interference.Yes, we have electricity and power lines near our house, and this thing won't work with them there.I would have to drive a long way to find an open field.I got this thing for my backyard!If I could see the entire sky, I could figure out where objects are much easier and would not need it so much.I agree it really sucks batteries.I've been through 1 1/2 sets and haven't even gotten to work yet.The store I bought it from has only a seven day return policy, so I can't even send it back.Very disappointed.

Clever but not stellar!
It really sucks batteries, they should have used at least 4 AA cells.The GPS resolution only goes down to minutes, no seconds.It's all plastic and for $400 I expected higher quality.It won't help you find man-made satellites as I suspect the processor is too slow and there is not even a way to display the present elevation and azimuth although it must know them for internal calculations.Updating the firmware is way slow.Under "Tonight's Highlights" it may show from the menu that Jupiter for example is visible but when I tried to locate it, it has me point the unit into the dirt since if the object was not above my horizon.Maybe they could highlight menu objects that are truly visible? Off to a great start!
I recently purchased this scope from amazon.I read many reviews and suggestions and decided to go with the Firstscope 114 because it seemed to be the most scope I could get for the least price.I considered some cheaper models with the same features, but I'm glad I chose this one because the differences in quality would have ruined my experience.It took about 2 weeks to receive my scope from Amazon, but you can't beat free shipping!The scope was well packaged, the only casualty during shipping was a wingnut on the tripod with a broken wing.I contacted Celestron, and they immediately sent me another wingnut.Great customer service!
Terrific telescope for a really pleasant price
I've had this scope for about 4 months now and I have been very pleased with it.Firstly, I received it in only three days from Amazon.Secondly, I was genuinely pleased that all components are made of an alloy or other metal, unlike a particular Meade unit, which I used that had lots of plastic screws and other parts.Even the tightening screws for the lens mounts and red-dot sight are metal on this Celestron.The aluminum tripod is quite sturdy and adjustable; good for the little guys and girls that star-gaze too.The housing tube is black aluminum and sturdy as well.The red-dot sighter works well, especially when looking at stars/planets with a high-power lens, with less eye relief.The magnification and clarity of the views are really good.I've seen the rings of Saturn and Jupiter quite clearly with this scope.I also purchased the Celestron eyepiece kit that offers additional plossy lens (varying power) and a pretty good set of filters (including a moon filter).The only down side I can think of would be that the lubricant used by the company for the rotating axis' is quite sticky if you get it on ya.For the money, you're not going to regret the buy and you'll probably be glad you went with this quality model over lesser ones, that might even cost more.Celestron has a good product with this one.Hope this helps some.

Too Small, Poor Mount, Useless for Astronomy
This scope is not a good starter scope for anyone interested in astronomy.Here's why:
A Lot of Scope For The Bucks!
The first thing everyone comments on in seeing this scope and then learning what I paid for it is: "Wow- that's a lot of scope for the bucks!". Indeed, it's got all the attachments for a well rounded amateur's scope not only for star gazing, but also for terrestrial viewing.
Great starter telescope
I am pleasantly surprised by the telescope I got for the price. It was intended for casual observing and I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. It has all the accessories needed for viewing. High powered eyepiece, low powered eyepiece, adjustable tripod (stable for this size) and fine adjustment control for easy panning. I have shopped telescopes before and noticed that the tripods and eyepieces aren't too good in quality. But this one is different. I love the way it is easy to use for land viewing and gives nice views of the moon and its craters, specially when I use the high powered eyepiece. Good Quality - Great Deal!
I am very pleased with the quality of this set. Everything is multi-coated and is well made. The case is heavy duty and has room for other eyepieces. The 2X barlow lens doubles the eyepieces turning the 32mm into a 16mm and the 12.5mm into a 6.25mm eyepiece. You'll get plenty of use from the red LED flashlight as it will save your night vision when looking over your star chart.This is a great starter set for a needed upgrade from .965 eyepieces. The amazon price beats other online retailers by a mile.

Poor Starter Scope
This scope is not a good starter scope for anyone interested in astronomy.Here's why:
Not for serious stargazing
Celestron makes some of the world's greatest telescopes, but this is not one of them.It's fine for peeking into the neighbor's window across the street or looking at the a large, bright object in the sky like the moon.But for serious stargazing, one shouldn't expect much from this telescope or any telescope in this price range.No telescope in this price range is much good for looking at stars or other faint objects.A really good pair of binoculars for around the same price would probably give you more enjoyment and be more versatile.Just lie on the ground and look through both eyes at the moon or constellations, and then take them to the ballgame the next day.And try to get away from city lights.If you do get binoculars, make sure that the second number is at least 7 times the first number (e.g., get 7x50 binoculars, but not 7x35) and that they have fully multi-coated lenses.

Very nice for a beginner
I've bought mine when I did not know anything about astronomy. It is an amazing toy for an intelligent person. I thought that my 10 year old son will play with it, but it is over his head, I am actually playing with it. It is a completely automatic scope, i.e. after alignment is complete, it will guide you through the sky, and show you anything which is in it's database and above the horizon. The scope comes with a hand-held device "Autostar" which is a computer with a built database and 2-line alphanumerical display. It is menu-driven, and very easy to understand and operate after reading a manual for 10 minutes.
Meade EXT125EC /uhtc w/ autostar
A novice to astronomy i bought this unit with extra bells and whistles, thinking it would be a good intro to astronomy.I am completely disappointed and would never recommend it to anyone for any purpose other then a door stop.Unless you already have some knowledge of telescopes avoid it at all costs.Set up is difficult to impossible, and what eventually appears is not much better then what you can already see on a clear night.As far as i am concerned this purchase was awaste of money.

This is an awesome scope that is so much fun to use and makes it easy as can be to learn about astronomy.It comes with everything you need to see some of the most amazing outerspace objects, nebulas, other galaxies,and more.I can not say enough how easy and fun you will have with this scope.You can use it for terrestrial or space exploration.The only negative to the scope is do not expect to get many hours out of the AA batteries.Some things to do: first is buy an electronic focuser or a focus extender (flexible kind), I have the electronic focuser because it was just easy to use.Next, buy rechargeable batteries NiMH, or build you a 12volt power supply like I did with a lead-acid battery and small battery box.It will last you for several weeks of viewing and plenty of power.The price is not cheap, but remember you get what you pay for these days.I started with a lesser scope and had to upgrade a month later to this one.Just do it right the first time and get the ETX-125 now instead of wasting your time and money with other smaller scopes.Again, this is an awesome scope you will be proud you purchased and impress your friends! ... A good value for the $$
I bought this scope as a b-day gift for my hubby who has never owned a telescope before. It was fairly simple to put together, and we found the directions to be very helpful and accurate.
There are better scopes
My recent Christmas experience with the Celestron Powerseeker 114EQ, my first "real" telescope, was a great disappointment. The assembled telescope looked very impressive but functioned poorly. It came without a detailed instruction manual making it difficult to set up, balance, and aim even for a mechanically inclined novice. The plastic finderscope was very cheap, blurry, and hard to align with the main scope. The "equatorial" (EQ) mount knobs moved the scope with jerky motions at times and the scope itself seemed a bit vibration prone on its tripod. Stellar images were blurry and unimpressive (possibly due to mirror misalignment in shipping and/or manufacturing defect) thus other individual scopes may do better than mine in this category. Newtonian reflector type telescope mirrors go out of alignment ("collimation") fairly easily and this scope came without instructions for how to realign them. I returned the telescope within the 30 day refund period and am looking for a better quality and sturdier one like the highly praised Orion Skyquest series or possibly the smaller and more portable Edmund Scientific Astroscan.
An excellent beginning scope.
I received this telescope for Christmas and I must say after waiting two nights to use it I am impressed.My first target was M42 Orion's Nebula and the K20 eyepiece gave me a mesmerizing view of this amazing stellar nursery.The mount does have some shakiness to it but, it's nothing that can't be overlooked.I have the updated scope so it came with a metal focuser which is a big plus.The 3x Barlow is okay with the 20 but is useless with the 4 as is the 4mm eyepiece itself.If you are thinking of getting a more expensive scope of this size I recommend getting this and buying a 25mm Plossl eyepiece and a 2x Barlow and possibly a 7.5mm eyepiece (planetary and moon viewing) for the extra money you would spend on a more expensive scope. ... Okay, I know nothing about telescopes. But my husband and I bought this last summer because he thought it'd be fun to star gaze. When we did, it was truly one of the most wonderful experience ever! It allows you to observe celestial objects in brilliant resolution. It wasn't complicated and simple to use. But you do have to read the manual.
Meade Does It Right
The Meade ETX90EC lives up to its billing.It's a high-quality piece of gear that exudes craft and workmanship.The bundled package w/Autostar and Tripod gives you most of what you need.If you have any intent of doing terrestrial viewing, you should consider the 45 degree erecting prism.Also, the package does not come with any power adapters.If you plan to be out for a long evening of star gazing, you will probably want the adapter that lets you plug into a cigarette lighter.I wish Amazon had the UHTC version available, but no luck.Finally, I haven't been able to find the correct T-mount adapter for this scope on Amazon.I do want to use it for photography eventually.The main thing I would say is that this is not a toy, but it is ideal for beginners to intermediate enthusiasts.I've had more fun in just a couple sessions than I've ever had before.

Disappointed in Meade
This was my husband's big present for Christmas, something he has always wanted.While unwrapping and unpacking, he heard a rattle in the spotting scope.Upon investigation, he fished out a broken set screw and discovered that it had sheared off the outside of the spotting scope.Another screw was badly damaged.The eyepiece covers had all been left off when shipping.Also, all the settings were loose and had to be reset.Meade does not have an 800 number and you are put on hold interminably when you try to contact them.All in all, he likes the scope BUT was very disappointed in the quality of the manufacturer and lack of customer service.What a disappointment for Christams day! ... Periscope for help around the house
This is sold as a toy but I bought it to help me peek into a ceiling of my condo for a repair project. It turned out to be a tad too large for the vent I wanted to poke it into, my error in not measuring accurately.But it seems sturdy, well made, light weight, has large mirrors.Will find other uses for it, I am sure.

5 Star periscope
I work on manufactured housing and on many occasions I have to cut into the belly of the home to try to find a leaky water line or to figure out how some pipes are configured or what ever. Normally I would have to cut a hole in the belly paper and insulation and then stick my head up through the belly paper and insulation, and with the aid of a flashlight, try to find the object of my desire. Now, with this periscope, all I have to do is cut the hole big enough to stick the periscope through and search for the problem. What helps a lot is that I secured a three led light to the side of the periscope, and can see pleanty good and don't have to get myself full of insulation. This little unit was probably made for kids, but it is pleanty sturdy for what I need it for and what is so amazing is that it is so clear, also. You don't loose anything to the lack of depth perception or anything. With a bit of TLC, this baby will last me for a long time. Being made of plastic, it seems to be suprisingly sturdy also. The best thing is that you can't beat the price with a stick. I even let my little princess play with it, If I'm not!!
