1-0 out of 5 stars Dubious Value At Best
I purchased this item two weeks ago.My thought was that it seemed like a reasonably priced, perfect addition to the "tools" necessary for a budding amateur backyard astronomy hobby (its advertised contents, construction, and "glow-in-the-dark" planisphere). After closely examining the item for the past ten days, I'm forced to conclude that I was in error, and that you really do get what you pay for.As Celestron is one of the most reputable names in astronomy, I must confess that I assumed that quality would follow in all products that bear their name.I have found that this does not hold true in the case of these sky maps. The major problem with the package is that it is rife with misspellings, letter transpositions, apparent omitted words, and just plain (what we used to call in the old days) "typographical errors."Additionally, when I compare some of the technical information on the maps (i.e., star magnitudes, astronomical distances, etc.)and accompanying descriptions with other authoritative astronomy sources I have in my possession, I also find numerous apparent errors and discrepances. When using a product like this, it is essential that one be able to trust the data and information it contains.Since I'm not able to do this, I must rate this item with one star. When I purchased the item, it was marked down by twenty percent.I note that in less that two weeks since my purchase, the price has been further reduced by another thirteen percent. In this case, don't be fooled (as I was) by an attractive price.AVOID THIS PRODUCT. (I don't have a substitute to recommend at this time.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It was worth the price, but don't expect ccd performance
Having read the reviews of others prior to purchasing my electronic eyepiece, I did not expect too much from it.But for the price I paid, I would buy it again. My main dislike is the apparent focal length. It is the equivalent of about a 4mm lens.I live in a major metropolitan area with lots of haze and light pollution, a 4mm optical lens is of questionable value. The electronics makes it worst.I can see earth's moon pretty well, but only the brightest two of Jupiter's four visible moons.Forget about seeing dim stars or deep space objects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product with alot of potential
I bought this product on sale for $39.00 at a local camera store after reading the reviews on this page. This was after I also bought an Orion Electronic eyepiece the week before. One thing that makes this eyepiece infinetly better than the Orion eyepiece is the fact that it is threaded for filters (or stacking of multiple filters) whereas the Orion eyepiece is not. Using it on my 6" reflector, I first tried it with a white light solar filter. The view was crisp as I expected on both the Meade and the Orion eyepiece. The Meade eyepiece is alittle larger than the Orion eyepiece (4mm vs. Orion's 3.8mm) but it is not really too noticeable. Viewing the moon at gibbous phase and the contrast tweaked, the view was also crisp and defined in both eyepieces. I finally tried it on Jupiter. Here is where the difference between the Orion eyepiece and the Meade eyepiece was most pronounced. Because the Orion eyepiece is not threaded, Jupiter came out completely whitewashed, even when the contrast was completely tweaked. Because the Meade eyepiece is able to be used with a filter, I placed a Baader's Planetary Contrast Booster on it. The 2 cloud belts at the equator were visible on my 20" TV as a monitor. Also visible were the 4 moons at the same setting. When used with a video card tied in to a pc, a person can frame-grab and have their own "poor man's" version of a CCD picture. Using this method, suprisingly good pictures that rival much higher priced CCD's may be achieved. This eyepiece in my opinion is well worth the price (even if you don't get it on sale) and has alot of potential when used with a video card. Just remeber to buy some extension cords and adapters for the RCA cables.

5-0 out of 5 stars great addition to any telescope
This eyepiece is quite nice. I tried it out and was amazed at the results. I use it on a six inch reflecting telescope. I used it first on the best target in the night sky, the Moon. It looked as though I was looking through a window on an apollo capsule orbiting the moon. I am not kidding. It was great. I then moved over to Saturn. I could clearly see the rings and bands of clouds. This item is worth the cost! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Charger hard to repair
I have a 7 Ah unit and have been using it for years. Not bad for what it is -- after all, deep down it's just a 12V lead-acid battery. But one fine day it just stopped charging. At first I thought the battery was dead and so I went to Radio Shack and bought a new one for $15.It isn't hard to replace and all the lights lit up and everything, but still no charging. Then I did what I should have done in the first place -- measured the output voltage of the 15V power adapter. No voltage to speak of. Then I tried to repair the adapter itself but it turned out that one needs a screwdriver with a triangular tip to open the protective cover of this thing!!No hardware store in my area (and I checked quite a few) had such an outlandish screwdriver. For that matter, I couldn't find a replacement either. It is hard to find a 15V adapter; most power supplies out there are 6, 9, or 12 volts. In summary, I'm left with a functional main unit and no easy way to charge it up.So, buyer beware: if something stops working you may well have to buy a brand new one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential gadget for large electronic Telescopes
I used my Power Tank (17Amp version) for a whole year. After many months of bad weather, I stored it away with my Telescope. Six months of unattended storage were enough to kill the battery. I should had read the manual before putting it away for so long. These tanks need to be recharged at least once a month in order to preserve the cell inside. These power tanks contain a sealed dry 12Volt battery cell inside. One can probably replace it, but it in my case, the cost for the 17amp version is roughly $40 plus the risk of installation. I decided to get a new Power Tank 7Amp version because it is more than enough for my Telescope (Meade LX200GPS). In conclusion, the power tank is a must have for large 12Vdc telescopes, but one must take very good care of charging it at least once a month in order to get maximum lifetime of the product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent power for field use
This battery unit has been usefull to me in the field as long as I don't use a dew zapper for too long (more that 4 hours).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars celestron ultima 2X barlow
The application for this barlow on my 8i/GPS SCT/XLT was to gain higher magnification options from longer focal length and eye relief eyepieces (ELux and Xcel 25-18-15mm)and stay in modest price ranges for everything. COMMON TESTS with the barlow vs. short focal length eyepieces to 8mm was most favorable: a) using both common and wide angle FOV eyepieces and b)testing with and without eye glasses while c) viewing Polaris double, Jupiter & moons and the Moon. Seeing conditions were poor (Dallas, summer, early evening sky with a lot of Moonlight.) Never the less I am pleased with both the Celestron Ultima 2X barlow and the strategy and therefore I "recommended". Shipping was prompt - much better than prior experiences with amazon.com - improvement so noted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive but great addition for your viewing pleasure
This particular Barlow, along with the Orion Shorty, is highly recommended on several of the astronomy forums on the internet.I got this one instead of the Orion simply because Amazon was offering it at about $52 at the time.
