Great idea
This has become one of the highlights for people coming over to my apartment and hanging out.I keep it out on the coffee table and inevitably during the night someone picks it up and starts checking everything within reach using it.
quite fun, but probably not 100x
this little microscope is quite fun... it can let you see paper tissue as long fiber, and see carbon particles on a paper printed out by a laser printer.for many printings, i can actually see the "pink" color as red background with lots of white circle dots, making the red look like pink.so it is a lot of fun.However, I don't think it can really magnify to 100x or 60x, because at 100x, we should be able to see dust mites with it.(some photos of dust mite were taken at 200x on some website).but i used this microscope to look here and there, and i never saw any moving object such as a dust mite.

Awesome Microscope
I am studying for my Pest control license for lawn and ornamentals here in Florida and needed a microscope to place leaves etc. under to look at what bug/insect may be bothering it. This is worth every penny, not only did i find spider mites on a fig leaf that was having trouble, but i also found a dead lace bug. I am very glad that i read the reviews on Amazon because that is what made up my mind to get this one.

Keep shopping
This microscope only comes with a two year warranty. I found similar microscopes online for the same price that offer a lifetime warranty. Get one of those instead.

YAY FUN
Hi Folks. Let me begin by saying this microscope has been an extremely fun toy to have around the house. I'm a law student (read: not a scientist haha) and this thing has been great fun - for the other novices like me, this microscope magnifies both 20x and 40x, which may not sound like much, but wait until you get a fingernail or a bug under it - EWWWWW. Anyway, this thing is absolutely solid - nice heavy-duty construction, with great optics. For those of you who don't know, this is a "dissecting" microscope which means you don't need slides or any of that stuff - you can just stick anything under it and easily get it in focus. VERY cool, and highly recommended to anyone who is interested in exploring the world of the small and icky. Great specs.
This scope has nearly the identical specifications to the one I bought for medical school 20 years ago. The optics are just wonderful. What amuses me is the fact that this scope costs 1/4 of what we all paid back then! For the high school, college or med student (not for anatomy though), this should do the trick nicely. Good value for the money
You get about as much as can be expected for this price range.
Actually....
Actually, the oil is not to prevent the objective from scratching the slide, but instead to allow the slide to be viewed at that magnification at all. With that high a magnification the refraction will be very high, and a lot of light will escape before it ever gets to the eye (the light is going through glass, then air, then glass again, distorting its path greatly). The oil that is used for these microscopes has the same refractive index as the lens glass, and so light travels through it at the same speed and doesn't run off course.

NOT A DESIGN ERROR
This is in response to the post that there was an error with the 100x on the microscope. It's not that it's an error, but when you do magnifications at that level you have to do what's called oil immersion with the slides. This enables the lense to get close without being scratched. Optics and camera are just excellent. Images are clear and have excellent resolution. The software is very easy to use. This is good enough even for professional use.
