$99.00 AND NO USB HOOKUP?
I guess maybe it was my own fault but I assumed all of the new scanners on the market included USB connections. This one is going back! This is probably an o.k. scanner but most computers offer USB connection for plugand play operation and find it pain to hook it up through my printer.

Nice Scanner
Great scanner, good quality, not in love with the software that it came with but I like the scanner

Best Slide Scanner
Over the last 45 years, or so, I have amassed close to 9,000 slides, in varoiud formats; 16 mm, 35 mm, 2-14" and 2-1/4" X 3-14". I am scanning and edting all the pictures for my family. The scanner does a wondeful job.

A useful tool with not enough instructions
The Microtek Scanmaker X6 is a pretty sharp looking unit and the installation of the unit and its software were straightforward.It will scan in documents and pictures up to 8.5 x 11 inches quickly and withextremely high resolution.Once the picture is taken, the includedsoftware will allow you to manipulate the colors, add effects etc. justlike a computer graphics expert (well, kinda).The only real problem I hadwith it stemmed from it being my first scanner.The unit comes with veryfew instructions.A simple pamphlet on how to scan in nice photos wouldhave been extremely useful.I was able to quickly discern how to adjustthe resolution and scaling so that the pictures I was scanning didn't turnout to be several hundred MB large, but I am not sure everyone will realizehow to do that.Even now, I am not sure whether it is better to scan in apicture with high resolution and then scale it down with the software orscan it in with a lower resololution and scale it down less. . .see thekind of confusion I am talking about?On the upside, I have been able toaugment my website with tons of pictures and scan in some importantdocuments.The software will even allow you to use your scanner as eithera fax machine or a photocopier (provided you have a modem and printer,respectively).Generally speaking, I recommend the unit to people who atleast have some clue about how to use computers well.The real amateurswill probably never figure it out.

It was great until...
I got this scanner in January 2003 from Amazon. It was great, and worked cleanly and smoothly with my Windows ME. I reccomend it for anyone with ME or below, in fact--it was very easy to use and set up. However, don't listen to the claims that Compaq will make about this scanner being able to work with XP: it's not true. I recently upgraded to XP, and checked out the troubleshooting guide at compaq.com, where it says that you can get drivers to make this scanner compatible. It's NOT. They wanted me to reinstall my brand new Windows, which wouldn't really solve anything. Don't get this scanner if you have XP or plan to upgrade to it in the near future, it's not worth the struggle. On the other hand, if you have 98, 2000, or ME, it's an excellent deal and good quality equipment!

more than adequate for home use
I bought it for $25 at a clearance. It gives very high resolution scans, with very high quality, but I do not recommnd it for professonal use since the colros are slightly off always (a white becomes blueish for example). It is speedy (about 6 seconds a scan, most of it being taken up by the scaning program), and light to carry (cheap, not much in it, weighs like dictionary). I do have to admit it is extreamly cheaply built. There is like nothing inside it. I dont see any negative effects from it though. If it had a USB 2.0 (instead of USB 1.1) interface I bet it could take a 1200dpi scan in 5 seconds. It has high enough resolution to do OCRing no problem. Finally a USB Scanner that works with Windows XP!!
Although I haven't used this scanner yet - I do plan to purchse it in the near future.The last review I read was very helpful to me.I have purchased (2) other scanners and neither of them will work with Window's XP.One was a Visoneer Paperport 6100 and the other was an older model Visoneer.They worked great with ME and Windows 98.Needless to say I'm very happy to find a scanner that will work with XP at a resonable price.Read more

Fantastic Scanner.Easy to Set-Up!
This scanner was a charm to set-up.Once the Microsoft SP1a was installed (absolutely necessary for USB 2.0), and the software was loaded, I plugged this scanner into the USB port and it instantly was operational.This is the only reasonably priced legal size scanner and it appears to be an excellent device.

Do Not Buy This Scanner
I purchased this scanner about 18 months ago and paid a great deal of money for it (purchased elsewhere). I work in a professional graphic studio and needed a large flatbed. The first scanner arrived DOA, and it was returned. The second scanner died within one week. Recently, I started to notice severe color variations. This is after months of other problems, including scans that had shadows where there were none, and strange color patterns most of which I was able to correct in PhotoShop.Talking to technical support was useless, I would email them the scans that had very visible problems and they would claim it would look perfect on their monitor. I finally got hold of a supervisor who told me that the scanner was broken and would need repair,which would cost at least a few hundred dollars, plus shipping costs. Have decided to avoid further aggravation and just buy a new scanner, which will not be Microtek.

Good buy for A3 heavy duty scanning.
Needed a scanner that would scan A3 size papers, and would work heavy duty on a daily basis. I bought this one, and found my money's worth. The scans are pretty good. Even works on XP :)
This scanner works fine on XP.XP detects and installs the driver, however you can not install the HP driver.It is still works! I succesfully scanned OCR and Color photo with a usb cable!Helps if you know what you're doing. ;)

Great Scanner
I've used this scanner on both '98 and ME. It works great. I never had any problems with it. It scans nice, and it has a preview before the actual scan to allow one to make specific choices for that particular scan.

USB interface does not work with WinXP
HP's patch for WinXP killed the USB interface and HP was not willing to fix the root problem. Have seen many people reporting the same problem on HP's user forum. At least 20 complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau but HP seem to ignore most of them. ... Read more

Great Scanner but not for the long-haul
I received this Scanner brand new one Christmas and it worked quite admirably over the next year or so.Even though it was a bit slow when scanning stuff, I thought it was wonderful.Of course, I only scanned stuff about 1 a month or so.
Belt problems
I was pleased with this scanner until I scanned my third or fourth document. (Unfortunately, this occurred after the 90-day warranty expired.) While scanning the document, I heard a rattling noise, and the scanner stopped scanning. I looked under my document and through the scanner glass I saw a small white plastic cap rolling around loose. The belt that pulls the scanner back & forth had come off its upper axle because this cap, which should stay on the end of the upper axle, had popped off. (Note to HP: The cap ought to be threaded, like a screw, or glued on, so that it does not pop off.) I tried to email hp.com to ask for help in opening the scanner and fixing this on my own, but my computer keeps getting an error message from their website emailer.

I got this awhile ago and it just doesn't work now. It scans, but there is a blackbar on the side. So, I am looking for a new one. It's ok for the price that it's at.
