Wow, what a difference!
I purchased this 3 watt light for my Sony DCR-HC96 Mini DV camera.Without the light, the camera's indoor performance is mediocre at best.I have to admit that I didn't expect much when I attached this little light to the camera.But boy, was I wrong - The difference is amazing!While 3 watts may not sound like a lot, it's enough to light your subject from up to 10 feet away with no problems.I am astonished at how much better the video is when using this in low light.Note that the build quality of this light is nothing special, and it does get extremely hot after only a few minutes of use.But you will be rewarded by the big difference it makes on your video. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Good accessory
I bought this light for my DCR-DVD92, which doesn't have any lamp integrated. Makes notorious improves for poor lightning shots. But be prepared with another than standard battery, because this light takes half of your battery's power. I also bought NP-FP90 for it (this battery will give you 150 minutes with this light on). Works Well
Works in well 5 to 20 ft away. There is no ajustablity for close recording. the light shots over the top of subject for video at 5 ft or less. the flash feature is perfect.

Small but pricey
I just received the HVL-HFL1 (video light and flash).It is small, light and compact but since I ordered, I realize the HVL-HL1 (video light only) is available and is about $100 less.Since the DVD-403 comes with a flash (albeit small), I am going to return and reorder the HVL-HL1 which is about $40.The video light was the main reason for ordering this for me.If you do want the flash capability, it does look well built and stylish (and did I say small).I guess the small size is a benefit of using the camcorder battery (rather than built in).

Novice Challenges
I am a novice photographer, so take this with a grain of salt...I just bought this kit and it included no instructions and lots of components.I suppose if you are accustomed to using these kits, putting them together must seem self-explanatory.If you are new to these kits you will find it frustrating.It is also frustrating to discover Smith Victor does not have a support site (just references on photography).They do not even provide a support # or address.Keep all this in mind when considering something from this company.

Good value
This kit, although not for the died in the wool professional, is an excellent starting point for serious amateurs to learn how to use studio lighting effectively without spending a fortune. I has the basic ingredients to experiment with and produce excellent results.

Affordable, but difficult to work with
This was the first light kit I had purchased.I'm a video hobbyist and often produce programs for local community groups and public access TV.I've started doing more on-camera interviews of individuals and discussion groups indoors and felt I needed a basic light kit.

Nice affordable lighting kit
If you need professional lighting for your video productions, this is a fine unexpensive option that will provide you with smooth, reliable ilumination for your set. Replacement bulbs are easy to obtain and at a low cost. This is a good way to get started and to learn the trade.

does the job
Everything arrived very quickly, parts were not damaged at all and all bulbs were intact as well. Could have used some assembly instructions for attatching the head of the lights to the shaft, but other than that it was fairly simple. It does not have a carrying case which was a bummer, but the lights were all that i expected them to be

Perfect for the indy film guy
Being an indy filmmaker, inexpensive is always a winner.I purchased this product from a different seller, and we love it.Some have complained that the softboxes are difficult to set up, and compare to some of the very expensive models, they can be a little more challenging.But after lots of practice I can honestly say that I can set them up and take them down in a snap.They are light and compact and produce a nice balanced soft light.
