Editorial Review

The Meade ETX90EC is a compact telescope with excellent optics, packaged with a sturdy tripod and the remarkable Autostar computer control. Even though I own several telescopes and belong to an Astronomy club, the first night I took out the ETX, it showed me objects I'd never seen before. The ETX90EC is the computerized version of an affordable Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope first introduced by Meade in 1996. Every reviewer since then has commented on the excellent optics. How excellent? When I presented a session on optical testing at my local Astronomy club, I brought my ETX90 so that everyone could see what a "textbook" star test actually looks like. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars!
Okay, I know nothing about telescopes. But my husband and I bought this last summer because he thought it'd be fun to star gaze. When we did, it was truly one of the most wonderful experience ever! It allows you to observe celestial objects in brilliant resolution. It wasn't complicated and simple to use. But you do have to read the manual.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meade Does It Right
The Meade ETX90EC lives up to its billing. It's a high-quality piece of gear that exudes craft and workmanship. The bundled package w/Autostar and Tripod gives you most of what you need.If you have any intent of doing terrestrial viewing, you should consider the 45 degree erecting prism. Also, the package does not come with any power adapters. If you plan to be out for a long evening of star gazing, you will probably want the adapter that lets you plug into a cigarette lighter.I wish Amazon had the UHTC version available, but no luck. Finally, I haven't been able to find the correct T-mount adapter for this scope on Amazon.I do want to use it for photography eventually. The main thing I would say is that this is not a toy, but it is ideal for beginners to intermediate enthusiasts.I've had more fun in just a couple sessions than I've ever had before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Meade
This was my husband's big present for Christmas, something he has always wanted. While unwrapping and unpacking, he heard a rattle in the spotting scope.Upon investigation, he fished out a broken set screw and discovered that it had sheared off the outside of the spotting scope.Another screw was badly damaged. The eyepiece covers had all been left off when shipping. Also, all the settings were loose and had to be reset.Meade does not have an 800 number and you are put on hold interminably when you try to contact them. All in all, he likes the scope BUT was very disappointed in the quality of the manufacturer and lack of customer service. What a disappointment for Christams day! ... The ETX105EC is the newest model in Meade's popular ETX series. Independent reviewers have consistently praised the ETX Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes fortheir excellent optics but questioned some of the ergonomic features, especially the finder scope. The optics fully live up to the hype, and the ergonomic problems can generally be surmounted with the right eyepiece. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars etx 105 initial impression
OKi'm 2 weeks into discovering this little scope.4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little scope!
I've had the ETX 105 for over 3 weeks now.I've taken it out 4 times already (weather permitting) and viewed the moon once and Jupiter 3 times. This is my first scope and I think it is great.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent telescope
The ETX105EC is definitively much better built than the ETX90 although it is in the limits of portability because is fairly heavy. It is incredible silent while tracking objects and it obviously gathers more light than the ETX90. Want proof? The 105 shows one of Saturn's moons whereas the 90 doesn't (at least my friend's ETX90 didn't).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars goto where ?
After receiving this scope .I read the instructions and understood them. The goto feature is not difficult to figure out.So I had no problems there. I have never been able to see any neb. or gal. Nothing but the usual boring venus and jupiter. The moon of course. This scope although expensive is no better than my dept. store telescope. What good is goto when you getthere there is nothing to see. Star test was excellent so it doesnt need collimation. DO NOT BUY ANY SCOPE WITH LESS THAN 8inches of apeture. And you can take that to the bank!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What I see through this scope
I originally ordered the Nexstar 80 GT because I wanted to see the bands of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn during winter of 2001-2 while those planets were high and bright. Before it shipped, an astronomer friend suggested that I save [price] on a 5" or 8" scope by not buying that one. So I bought the Nexstar 5 instead. Overall, I am very happy with it, but now I wish that I had saved [price] on an 8" or 10" scope by not buying the 5". 5-0 out of 5 stars Compact and easy to use.
Small enough to throw in the trunk of your car, sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of stumbling around the backyard in the dark, the Nexstar 5 offers fine viewing and ease of use for any beginner that does not have the time or the attention span to learn the locations of many celestial objects. ... Editorial Review

The Nexstar 5i is the newest version of Celestron's legendary five inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. It is compact, easy to transport, and easy to use. The five-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain optics are sharp enough to bring out pleasing detail on the Moon, on the planets, and on star clusters and galaxies, yet the optical tube is less than twelve inches long. It's small enough to carry outside, even when all set up and ready to go, small enough to take on camping trips, and easy to transport to public star parties. This telescope package does not include the tripod or the computerized hand control; although you can set up the telescope on a sturdy surface and observe bright objects this way, realistically you'll want the computer control. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Informal Review
Pro:
4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty cool, pretty powerful little telescope...
I've owned one of these for a couple of years now, and find it to be a pretty good scope for the price. The Mak-Cass design provides a tremendous focal length (1300mm)which means that you can attain alot of magnification per eyepiece used. Alot of magnification... This scope does a good job resolving detail on the Moon and gives decent views of the planets, but it's no rich-field scope- not by any means. I get much better views of nebulae and glalxies through large aperture binoculars. One just doesn't get alot of light thru this tube. Increasingly powerful eyepieces will dim the view exponentially. But this is true of any scope, so don't let that keep you away from this great little scope! It's a snap to set up and the Equatorial mount it comes with is very good. This is a scope which requires very little tinkering with, so you will carry it outside alot more than some bulky, complicated scope. More time under the stars is what it's all about. The Sirius 25mm Plossl eyepiece it comes with will give you 52x in this scope. Best to get some others so you can vary your magnification. Orion offers the back-yard astronomer good quality for the price. It's no Questar, but it's not $7,000.00 either!!! A good Read more
