5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent alternative to mineDV camcorder
I wanted to purchase a digital camcorder to record family events, parties, kid's performaces at school, etc. Until now, I was using 9 year old 8mm Sony TR86 camcorder that at the time of purchase was very basic...no LCD, no stabilization, etc. But at that price (it cost over [...] then) that all what I could afford. And I can tell you for 9 years, this camcorder was servicing me very well but now my son needs that camcorder to record his school's projects.
4-0 out of 5 stars My second D8 camera
This review is really about the Sony D8 cameras. I've just ordered this camera after my original one was stolen. I bought my original D8 back in 2000 and took it all over the world. It was thrown into backpacks, taken to the beach and had the dust of three continents in the viewfinder. Throughout it all it performed flawlessly. In six years I never took it in for servicing, though I kept meaning to get it cleaned I never did. I took hundreds and hundreds of hours of video and never had a glitch. My wife is a choreographer and I've filmed many dance performances and this camera often took better quality images than the professionals hired for the job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it for the money
This is the second camcorder I've purchased. Learning to use it and getting decent footage was a breeze compared to my old VHS-C camcorder. The battery life is decent and the picture quality is very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars No USB Port!
This camcorder can not be used to record direct to your computer or any of the new dvd recorders. You have to record first to video tape then be able to connect your VCR to a dvd recording device.Very disappointed. How hard can it be for Sony to add the USB port?Even my $100 digital camera has a USB port.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough.
This is your basic video camera. I'd say it's good for those who just need a video camera for occassional video recording. It has the basic features, with NightShot as an additional bonus. The picture quality isn't as great as I thought it would be (it's a bit grainy on my 36" WEGA), it doesn't record in stereo, and I wish it could hook up on my computer, but there's no USB port. I guess for the price you pay, it's expected. I'd recommend it if you're not really looking for something too hi-tech. I wish I could've gone with something better, maybe the next model up, but hey, it gets the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars I want to marry this camcorder!
Everything about this camera is amazing to me. I originally read that there is a problem with this model of camcorder with the screen blanking out after 1 or 2 years of use. I haven't seen any signs of that happening so far. I love this. Being a college kid it gets banged up on occasion, but my Sony seems to have held up to the challenge.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Manual White Balance
This Camcorder is useless. Has alot of extras but when working on a video for my AV class I when to set up the white balance and found that it's auto. When compared to one with manual WB this camera sucks. Pictures are all different colors from blue to yellow. Manual WB is a basic standard on all camera and camcorder so why was it left off this one? I would give or suggest this camcorder to any one, I'd look for another, just in case you plan on editing your color don't change from shot to shot. This is a worthless camcorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive
I have had this camcorder since October of '04, and I have only complained about one thing: not being able to hook it up to a computer through USB. Other than that, this is a very cool li'l camera that shoots good quality images.I shot video at a party for a music video with it once, and am currently using it to make a film I wrote. This is a very handy camcoreder indded, and I would recommend it to just anyone who wants to capture some fun times.I only recommend that you buy lots of tapes--it's just fun to waste tape on recording random crap sometimes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect choice for something easy to use
After toying with the idead of getting a camcorder, I recently bought this Sony camcorder about a week ago.Out of all the ones I've researched this one seemed to be the easiest to use.I've never used a camcorder before and I was able to use this without looking through the manual.Every feature on the camcorder is clear as day to use.If you are just looking for something simply to use that has features that ANYONE can operate, this is the camera for you. ... The Sony CCD-TRV68 is a wonderful addition to the Hi8 format, which features the best video quality outside of digital. The 20x optical (28x digital) zoom lens is paired with Sony's SteadyShot image stabilization, a good thing when you're dealing with high zoom levels. Additionally, a number of faders and shooting modes are built into the CCD-TRV68, all of which add spice to your video. Sony's NightShot system uses the infrared spectrum to illuminate subjects in low-light (or no-light) situations. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't plan on using this camcorder for long...
We used this camcorder about 3 times before it died. It would no longer record properly. It captured audio but not video (ended up with a blank screen video capture.)
3-0 out of 5 stars An 'ok' Buy
I recieved this camera as a gift and used it 6 times before the amplifier went out, so that when you were watching your videos-you got sound, but no picture. This happened with our first camera, but you could see the video but there was no sound-also the amplifier. Unfortunatly it didn't fall under warranty so we have a broken camera lying around and must buy a new one. I give it three stars because for the time that I was able to use it, it was a great camera. If you do decide to buy this one-maybe think about an extended warranty?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good camera for the price - but make sure you check specs
I bought this camera slightly used in mint condition and I'm fairly impressed with it.The steadyshot function and nightshot are excellent features. However, I'm selling it, because you cannot take still shots, and it costs you an extra [money amount]for a media converter if you want to review/edit your videos on your computer. But, it is a good camera if you like watching home videos on your TV. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
Picture quality is good, loud & sensitive mono sound, easy and not too heavy (about 2 lbs with battery), not too big size for travelling (about 4.5 x 5 x 11 inches). STANDARD BATTERY that came with this camera works 2 hours for B&W viewfinder recording 50 minutes with color LCD recording. If you play black a lot on the LCD (I like to do that), this battery will last about 30 minutes, charging time is about 1 hour. Option batteries are available, and I think I should have one. 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeds expectations
I just received this today and I'm very excited about this camera. It comes complete with bag (in primary colors), strap for camera, A/V cable, remote, batteries for remote, AC adaptor, and rechargable battery pack.Only thing you need to buy is the 8mm tape.Well worth the money considering you don't have to buy the extras. This camera will help make some memorable holiday moments last forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Video Camera w/ lots of extras!
I bought this camcorder back in July and I have enjoyed it ever since.I have taken a lot of footage of skateboarding in my area and such. All I need to do is find a cheap fish-eye lens, and some cables to go to my PC.Can anyone help me find the right cable for this camera to a PC?Thanks. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camcorder
I just got the CCD-TRV-308 camcorder and it is awesome!! The only thing is is that you cant edit your film on your computer you can just play it back. I give 4 - 4 1/2 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little camera for the money
I've been trying to buy a video camera for the past 6 years (ever since my first monster bought in 1990 died).I finally bit the bullet since this camera seemed so reasonable and so highly-rated.I'm happy with every aspect of this camcorder. The bells and whistles are surprisingly complete, and it's so lightweight that I can (and do) spend the entire day with it in my hand.5-0 out of 5 stars A better camcorder than I thought!
We purchased this camcorder for the holidays, selecting the CCDTRV308 over the CCDTRV108 due to it's added features such as image stability and auto-light. It arrived within three days - amazing! With my son's birthday coming up at the weekend, and the speedy delivery, it was a real test as to whether I could read the manual and become comfortable in the camcorder's use before the big day. The instructions are clear, concise and easily referenced. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars C:31:23 error
I've been getting the C:31:23 error message on CCD-TRV36 model.Bought this unit four years ago and used it rarely (max 60hrs).I have contact SONY several times. The off-shore tech support suggest I spend $200 and send this to Sony and they will fix it for me (all labor and no parts needed!)They probably have an easy fix for it and are not willing to post it on their web site. Why should they when they can make $200!I told tech supportI can buy a brand new digital one for $350 and it will defiantly not be a Sony brand.I have put in brand new Sony tape and brand new rechargeable battery and it did not fix this issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact, convenient, and great battery life.
The camera really is easy to use and is loaded with features. The remaining battery life indicator is a GREAT feature. The special effects are fun to use. The night shot is cute but my use would be minimal.Overall, it is a very good camcorder.I would buy it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this camcorder
I just purchased this camcorder used for only $80.It is a great camera for the price. It's easy to use and the picture is good in quality.I bought it as a gift for my son (age 7) and he can handle it well on his own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst quality I've seen in a long time
Pretty cheap for a Hi8 camcorder, but quality is unacceptably poor. The zoom lever is hard to operate, and when you put in a tape the mechanism makes tons of noise, really making you nervous.LCD screen is a little flaky, deciding to quit working occasionally so you have to turn the machine off, wait 10 seconds and turn it back on.It also destroyed a new TDK Hi8 tape this past winter.I think I wasted my money, and look forward to getting a Sony this summer when I get a new job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small, stylish but one thing is not good
I bought this camcorder from amazon.com for $313.88. This camera is stylish, small with many features. Auto Exposures modes, Preset titiles like Anniversary, Birthday, Our Son, Our Boy e.t.c. The normal zoom is great but when you activate the digital zoom which is 440x and zoom in at a far object it zooms but the focus becomes blur some what. This is even written in the guide which comes with the camera. I dont know why this kind of fault is left in such a good camera with so many functions which are difficult to get in this price range. It also has a BLC function. On activating it the background becomes dull and the object becomes bright so that you can shoot in front of a window also. The tape insertion and ejection system is fully automatic and works only with power on. I like this feature the way the compartment comes up and opens automatically and how it goes back. Thats the coolest feature. There is also a range of languages to select from and the lcd viewver, TFT screen works fine if you see it from the front and not from sides. Overall this is the best camera with so many features the only thing lagging is the focus on doing digital zoom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly great!
I used it for weeks. It was astonishing. After I actualy shot some baby pictures, I knew my dedision was correct. Great picture and steady shot....

The Sharp VL-AH60U ViewCam makes it easy to capture great-looking videos. Its analog Hi8 format produces higher-quality images than either standard 8mm or VHS-C camcorders. Instead of using a standard viewfinder, the ViewCam utilizes a large, easy-to-see 3.5-inch LCD, making video taping nearly as easy as watching a TV show. The LCD monitor absorbs light to help prevent glare, and is fingerprint resistant. The lens on the VL-AH60U rotates 270 degrees, which is helpful when you're recording yourself, allowing for some interesting angles, and a 16:9 widescreen mode lets you shoot video in the same aspect ratio as the movies. 4-0 out of 5 stars I still like the design, even with the problems....here's why:
I have been doing lots of amateur photography and occasionally have a need for all kinds of angles. The design of this camera allows you to set it on the floor and have a stable picture. That one quailty has endeared me to this model.Earlier models had the flaws of only being able to sense the remote control from front or back, and the battery did not recharge internally. This model allows remote control whether you are in front of or behind the camera for start/stop and adjusting wide/narrow focus. The only knocks I have on this camera are the lack of a light, for poor lighting, and durability (repair) issues.I have gone through two of these models, but will always try to own at least one, as long as I can find them...even though I also have other more advanced cameras with independent light sources and low maintenace/repair issues.
1-0 out of 5 stars repair problems missed events.
The camera has been in and out of sharp's authorized repair center, and has cost a total $100 to repair. It still does not work and we have to buy a new camcorder, it won't be a sharp.1-0 out of 5 stars repair problems
I purchased this camera close to 2 years ago.I thought I was going to love it. It was easy to use and had numerous special effects. That was before the first breakdown, less than 3 months after purchase.Since then , it has been in and out of the shop for a total of 4 times.Under the Sharp warranty, they kept the camcorder an average of 2 months each time.I have missed having many family events put on tape because of this camera. My advice, DON"T BUY IT.If you do, however, an extended warranty is a neccesity with this camera. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excuse me...
It would be foolish to rely upon the information of an incompetent user not knowing the difference between digital and analog technology. A "large red X" means you are trying to record on a protected tape! By the way, its in good conscience not conscious. Furthermore, how can anyone claim a product is the "lamest on the market" when electronic publications that TEST each product say otherwise. The Sharp VL-A10U is an outstanding camera and if you should have trouble operating it consult your manual before making false claims and assumptions.

I hope this review reached you before you bought the lamest digital camera on the market. My wife and I have used this camera for a total of 10 hrs over 2 years. It does not work at all after this limited use. It is a useless paper weight.A larger red X appears on the screen when we put a tape in and try to record. The cost of repairs is estimated at $200.Doesn't the camera cost $200????

I've had two of these, and both of them lasted about a year? Both of them had the same malfunction- tapes jamming in the camera.I talked to a repair shop & they see this a lot with sonys because of the design.Using purchased movie software we were able to make good movies in our pc & burn to dvd.Using pixela software included we could capture still shots (good enough for listing things on ebay, etc.) which was a novelty then!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor support
I've had the camcorder for a while now, and was hoping to be able to use the USB streaming feature to make small computer movies and send them to my friends and family overseas.Although the camcorder is good the included software is weak and the USB streaming makes a very choppy poor quality AVI file.I recently got a new computer and could not find the device driver disk that came with the camcorder.Sony technical support was a joke and they ended up trying to sell me a driver for my camcorder. So now I have a camcorder that I can plug into my TV or record onto a VHS (Do people still use VHS?) but any dreams I have of putting something on my computer are fading fast.I'm going to have to find a new way to send my parents the video I took of my new house.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the USB Streaming
While this is a decent Analog camcorder, don't expect much from the USB streaming feature. The maximum frame size over USB is 320x240, which is half the minimum recommended for creating a DVD out of a home movie. If you want to get the video from your tapes onto a computer or DVD, expect to purchase a separate video capture device or card.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice but???
I puchased the Sharp and found it easy to use but disapointing in low light and indoor situations with slow auto focus and color shifting. I finally replaced it with a Sony TRV66 which is quite a bit more expensivebut performs much better all round.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal From Amazon.Com
I ordered it from Amazon and it came in 2 days (with 2 day air UPS option). This is a very functional camcorders and well-priced for a Hi-8 unit.It lacks the touch-sensitive screen found on the higher-end Sharpunits, using rather small clikc-type buttons across the bottom of thescreen. The Electronic Image Stabilization seems to only work welll whenyou are zoomed in on high-contrast shapes. That enables it to lock in andstabilize the image.Stabilization does not seem to work at all on generalscenes lacking these characteristics.Compared with my own Sony, the imagesensitivity does not seem as good, even in a normally lit room.Withoutbright lights on, the colors seem faded and without saturation. A good allaround Hi-8 unit for the price, but maybe not for a lot of inside use.

1-0 out of 5 stars This camera is trash!!
We bought this camera about 3 years ago, we had it for 5 months and it was never mishandled; used about 5 times. Then the tape started popping out and it wouldn't stay closed. Well, we had a service plan with it. Had to drive it 60 miles one way each time!! It has been fixed for the same problem 2 times now. It just sits in the closet. The plan is expired and we found out that it will cost about $90 to repair it (again). There is only 3 on ebay like it and 2 of those are not working as well!! Do not buy a Sony camcorder!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good camera
I have owned my camera for over three years and have enjoyed it immensely. Contrary to what the specs say, it does have preset titles, and you can also make custom titles. It also has good quality pictures. I don't mind the battery charger, and I like being able to use the view finder or LCD screen. I have certainly gotten my money's worth. Too bad it's not a digital. It is a really good, dependable camera that is easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Entry Level Camera
I've had this camera for a couple years with no operational problems. It does suck battery a bit, so one may wish to obtain a more powerful battery pack. The only feature that I would like to have added is a stabilizer. When zoomed out, the picture tends to get pretty jumpy. But at no zoom to about half zoom, the picture is pretty solid. The sound quality and night vision capability are pretty impressive, too, for a camera in this price range.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Camera
I've had this camera for almost a year now, and it's the first movie camera of any kind I've ever used. I have a digital still camera (an olympus 2100cz) so I'm not a neophyte.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for starters
This camera was given to me for Christmas a couple of years ago.It has good video quality, and the ability to play back the tape using an S-video jack. The fade options are limited when compared to other Sony products, but for an entry level camera it is a good value.I recommend this camera to anyone who just wants to record special occasions and for playing around. If you are a serious shutterbug, I would recommend something with more bells and whistles.5-0 out of 5 stars Digital revolution for computer owners who want versitility
