Lots of fun and high quality
This is a fun and good quality lens, offering true 1:1 macro at a reasonably price.I will echo the other reviewers comments about the clutch mechanism.Pretty clunky for an EX series lens.Fast auto focusing should you wish to use it for portraiture or the like, I think it better to focus manually for macro work.I also like that this lens has a very small minimum aperature for increasing the al important depth of field in macro work. I recommend a buy here.

This 105mm Sigma macro lens with a fast f/2.8 aperture satisfies you in every department. First of all it gives you a 1:1 true life size macro and these macro images comes out truly amazing... extremely sharp, good color saturation and contrast(on Pentax ZX-7). The 105mm focal length is also suitable for taking portraits. Portrait results have also come out extremely well. The EX finish is aesthetically pleasing, scratch proof and has a metal alloy body for sturdiness. The hood which is provided along with the lens matches well with it. One can also use a 77mm dia lens cap which fits perfectly on the hood, so that the hood can remain permanently on the lens (hood is threaded so that it can screw on the lens like filters.) do a little research and don't be fooled. Sigmas are generally a hit or miss thing for the lease quality. And wordt off if you travel and with the camera..seals are not at all reliable. Last but not least go ito a store and compare the drive noise on this unit to any other brand...very very noise...sorry i can not recommend them. Nikon, Tamron, Tokina...I personally prefer Nikon and Tokina...good luck

Good on a digital SLR
My copy of this lens gives good image quality, though it does have slight barrel distortion (things near the edge of the field of view bulge out very slightly). This is typical for this wide of a lens, and isn't noticeable unless viewing something with lots of straight lines near and parallel to the edge of the frame. What a wonderful piece of glass

Bang for the buck
I field-tested this recently and found it to be a good lens for the ~$1000 that I shelled out. Heavy it is indeed due to the 10X zoom...but quality is good for the money. The only flaw I find with this is NO Image Stabilizer. At 500mm even with a heavy tripod, small gusts of wind (20-30 miles) produce vibrations. Faster ISO and multiple snaps however make it a little easier to capture sharp images.

Best bang for the buck!
I just recently got into photography as a retirement hobby and was fortunate to be able to acquire a Canon D60 within two days of ordering one from Kaimuki Camera Store in Honolulu. heavy but worth it
I got this lens to replace my 600mm reflector which is fixed aperture with a dreadfully small depth of focus. This lens is spectacular by comparison: excellent focus depth, with F4-6.3 it is light-strong enough to get away with a lot of stuff that reflector lenses don't allow as they suck so much light. I do motorsport and nature photography, so fast exposure times are key, and this lens allows for good flexibility in difficult light conditions or where you need to be super-quick without compromising depht-of-focus. I use this lens on a Canon EOS 7E elan, and this is an outstanding combo for motosport and nature shots, since both the lens and the camera are very quick and very quiet. My two only complaints with this product are the weight (very heavy, bring Advil to shooting a whole Grand Prix weekend!)and the fact that the zoom is a little slow-going, but maybe that'll easen up with more use. Overall another very solid Sigma product, unbeatable value for the money. I shut off the autofocus sometimes when I do difficult action pics where there's potential for automatic focussing errors, but if you don't, be prepared to bring extra batteries, since moving the autofocus in a big lens like this will suck the power out of your camera in no time. ...
