Editorial Review

The advantages of digital voice recorders are numerous: superior sound, long recording times, and the convenience of built-in memory (much handier than hauling around several microcassettes). Enter the high-performance Olympus DS-2, which makes professional interviewing and dictation easy and efficient. With 64 MB of internal memory delivering up to 22 hours of total recording time in Long Play mode, the device is great for archiving long meetings or lectures, or for researching huge projects that require dozens of interviews. Users also have the choice of recording at several other speeds, including extreme high-quality modes that offer far less recording time (as little as one hour and five minutes) but much better audio resolution. The latter modes are more suitable for recording soft voices or when taking down complex song ideas--a process that's further assisted by the built-in stereo microphone designed to pick up all sides of a conversation with equal clarity.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More on Intel Mac compatibility
Actually, the DSS Player software that comes with this recorder does work on the new Intel Macs to transfer software from the recorder to the computer via a USB connector using the "Import File" command on the file menu.It translates to a wma file automatically, but won't do the translation to mp3 on any Mac as far as I can tell.I too have discovered EasyWMA, which works fine to do the wma to mp3 translation. There's also an application called Switch that works, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intel Mac Users Beware
The software that comes with the DS-2 (DSS Player) does not work on Intel Macs. They're working on a patch, but it's not expected to be out for a few months (it's late Sept 2006 now).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Clarity is Outstanding
And you don't even have to use the highest setting (Stereo HQ)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value, works perfectly
This is a great little device, bought for my wife's business. It records conversations between two people perfectly at its mid-quality and we are still on our first batteries even after considerable usage. Others have mentioned difficulty loading down to XP but it worked for us exactly as per the instructions (we have XP Home). The lowest quality was not good enough to hear clearly on play back but the capacity on its mid quality is plenty for this not to matter. HQ is very clear. I would thoroughly recommend it, especially at this price

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the device; 1 star for the software+driver
This is an excellent recorder. Very impressed with it. It's very sensitive and picks up anything at a distance. Sound quality is quite decent. We use it to record our baby's sounds.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and handy
I've been using this little gizmo to record lectures for a while and I'm quite happy about it. It seems that the olympus voice recorders are becoming a standard: most of my classmates who record the lectures in class have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Slow Hands
I'm a journalist and this device has been an absolute lifesaver. In interviews, meetings, or simple voice dictation, the DM-10 is just slightly heavier (a definite plus) that Olympus's other "sleeker" models, but is certainly small enough to carry around in your front pocket. I've had mine for over two years, and it's used everyday, has been dropped on several occasions, and has never failed me. TheDSS Player software works on Mac, and is slightly awkward, but has never hindered the overall performance. I keep all important interviews and recordings on a backup hard drive, which is far more convenient and less space consuming than mini tapes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for preventing a student's writer's cramp
I bought this little recorder because I was getting writer's cramp taking notes for four classes. It easily holds a day's worth of lectures without a problem and picks up every word that's said, though some of the comments from the audience get lost. The microphone is quite sensitive; I accidently turned it on when I shoved it in my pocket, and it still picked up every single word. Amazing! It's quite durable and very easy to use; I download lectures to my computer every night, and there they are when I need to review.
4-0 out of 5 stars Olympus DM-10 Digital Voice Recorder
I used this recorder to record rehearsal sessions for a chorus I am in.Previously, I had used a much less expensive tape recorder, and this is so much better. There really is no comparison. There is no way to turn it off (I think), so you will have to replace the batteries after a month or so.I do recommend the Olympus DM-10. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Olympus has NO quality control!!!!
I bought this Olympus recorder at a local electronics store (circuit city) and had to return the first one, since the record/playback head had a problem staying in physical contact with the tape. The playback volume would drop down in volume since the head was not snug against the tape during playback conditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what I want it to!That's all that matters!
I am a musician, and I own an eight track digital recorder for completed musical ideas, but sometimes i wake up at night with a vocal or lyrical idea that i just don't want to forget.I can keep this handy little recorder by my bed, that way i won't forget my great ideas. This product does what i want it to do, it helps me get my ideas out so that I don't forget them the next day.I heard that the idea for the opening riff for "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones was recorded as Keith Richards awoke with an idea in his head.It has been said that all that could be heard on the rest of the tape is Keith snoring! lol!! this may not be that very recorder, but it'll do fine by me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bargain even if 'old' technology!
If you are a student and just need a cheap, good quality recorder for classes- like I did- this is a real gem. Its just a plain old fashioned tape recorder- but compared to digital, the sound of this recording is excellent. For techno-freaks, be aware: It doesn't hook up to your computer to translate from recorder to printed notes via voice recognition software, it isn't the size of a pen (although it IS pretty small and lightweight), and it won't stand up on your desk and tap dance. It'll just make recording your lectures a cheap and easy proposition. As an aside: you will need a little adaptor ($2 on Olympus website)in order to use standard headphones with it (it has a mini-mini plug port, which is not standard) or else you will have to listen to it out loud.At this price, I think its worth grabbing these up while they last and while Olympus hasn't discontinued them yet (assuming that digital will eventually cause them to discontinue all 'tape recording' machines). So, even though I like computer stuff and have lots of gadgets and gizmos myself, I ignored 'image' and was very happy with this inexpensive little purchase!Footnote: I would have given it 5 stars IF it had a tape counter (this model doesn't) and IF it included the adaptor for standard headphone plug OR had a standard size port so you wouldn't need their own brand headset or adaptor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great recorder!
It records voices very clearly. I haven't figured out how to use all the folders yet. It's easy to press record, stop and to rewind or fast forward right in the middle of listening to what you've recorded. It is small like a cellphone yet big enough to use it properly. I haven't yet understood how to use all of the features that this item comes with. If I had to buy another one, I would buy this exact one again in an instant except I would buy the other model where you get many more hours of recording. I'm very happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite!
Replaced an older Panasonic micro-cassette tape recorder with this unit.
3-0 out of 5 stars Does what it says it does
Not disappointed, but not impressed. The buttons are oddly arranged and it does take a couple of menu selections to delete a clip.

This tape recorder is perfect for recording class lectures or conducting field interviews for academic purposes. The only thing you have to watch is make sure you have it on the right tape speed. You have to use the higher quality speed if you want to hear anything in a classroom setting. If the speaker is close and you only want the lecture and none of the student comments or you are conducting an interview both speeds are fine. 4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could find a hard case for this
I like this voice recorder. I just wanted something for my purse, so I could take a voice memo for myself, or record nature sounds like birds. It's a nice little recorder for that. But it keeps getting turned on by things in my purse, which runs the batteries down. I wish I could find a hard shell case for it, to prevent that from happening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good sound, missing some features
I was actually pleasantly surprised at the sound quality this unit gives, considering that there is no way to attach an external microphone. If you look on the Olympus website, you'll see that the DW90 has a sampling frequency of 22 kHz in HQ mode. That's better than the norm of 8 to 16 kHz that many others use (although not as good as something like the DM10 or new DS-2, which record at CD quality 44.1 kHz).The frequency response is only 300 to 5,800Hz, so I wouldn't try recording a symphony, but that's comparable to many of these voice recorders (again that DS-2 actually covers 100 to 17,000Hz.Impressive).If you're willing to download to PC frequently and don't need to capture more than 20 minutes at a time, it's a pretty good little device.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Small Capacity
I purchased this thinking that I was getting a recorder that would actually hold 90 minutes of audio.Unfortunately that capacity is only available for "LP" mode which is highly distorted.HQ and SP modes record very well, but only plan on getting 20-30 minutes of use out of it before the memory is full.Read more

The remanufactured W-10 doesn't just make it easy to record, it makes it easy to manage audio and image files, too. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Paranormal Investigator
I purchased this unit because almost every investigator with my local research team were using this particular model ... boy I couldn't be happier. This wonderful unit is so incredibly simple to use and to transfer your sound files from the recorder to the PC using your USB connection. I have recorded several EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) on mine and every team member has had great success with theirs. Don't buy this if you are looking for a camera! This is a voice recorder. It is nice to have the camera for emergencys but don't expect great quality. If you want a camera ... buy a camera! If you are looking for a voice recorder to investigate the paranormal this is your recorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slaptick camera
The Camera is a piece of trash, it will not allow the picture to be taken unless it's sensor finds enough light or if there is too much light, it will not take the picture. You must move around all over the place looking for a green light to come on. Then the picture looks like crap and says nothing that if you had taken it 3 inch. to the left, it would have been worst. The Voice Album software is unstable and crashes with HP printer drivers. The USB function is then useless. The recorder is cheap in sound w/ the worst point and click camer...it should not even be called a camera slaped together with make shift software

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful . . .
This little recorder is very nice. I have had it or about three days and I have already decoded most of the options. My only objection is that you have to hold the recored very close (in HQ at least) to get a decent recording . . .but the quality is VERY good. I would especially recommend this to singers. The musical quality is years ahead of any other recorder. A+ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recorder
Bought this recorder over a year ago and use it for an average of 15 hours per week to record school lectures. I love the fact that I can down load it to my computer nightly and have it ready to record again the next day. I can put each of myclasses into a separate folder and each lecture is stamped with the date and time. The only problem I have had is in a classroom where the air conditioner has been on and I have been closer to it then the instructor - this makes the recording very unclear. I would suggest to sit as close to the speaker as possible or at least not sitting where there is a lot of background noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice device for a nice price!
This is my first digital voice recorder. I use it for recording speeches and conferences. Sometimes I use it in my own office's meetings to record my mate's opinions. The software is very useful. You may change the format of your recordings using Windows Media or any similar application. My DVR is refurbished, and even so it does the job and saves my day in the sense of keeping sound records. I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It does the Job well and easy
I use this product at the office for interviews, meetings and for taking notes, for me it is better than a tape recorder because it gives you the option to save recordings in a PC.It is easy to use and so is the software that comes with it. Consulting the manual is only required for the special options that it has. The best use you can give this unit is to record conversations. Other user that need stereo sound will need to searh for something else. I got this product new on a local retailer for 45 USD back in 2004. I would advice to buy the VN-960 PC because it has 4 times the record time for only 60 USD. The only Cons. i find in this product are: Uses AAA batteries, sometimes Rechargable Batteries dont work and file transfer to PC is too slow. ... Read more

Got the recorder and works just fine. I've used it for about a month and still have not replaced the batteries. I just use it so I don't forget things I'm going to do. I'll never use all the memory but it's there if you need it. I'm very happy with my new toy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars cute device missing on the Titanic
The VN90 is a cute device that looks like a cell phone but feels like a light plastic toy1-0 out of 5 stars Peice Of Crep
I Bought this peace of crip to record different things that I hear. It only records fuzz. I hate this piece of plastic. It cost me a few dollars to buy, and when I record sounds that I hear, it distorts them and makes them sound like flatulance. I can not believe that this peace of crud works so badly. Don't buy it. It should burn!

3-0 out of 5 stars A 67 minutes recorder
I bought this recorder because it can record 180 minutes. There are three recording modes. For 180 minutes, you have to put up with very poor sound quality. The sound of standard play mode is excellent, but only record 67 minutes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars To Die For...
Olympus makes GREAT digital cameras, but their recorders are to die for, especially when you interview someone and get back to the newsroom only to discover that while the tape was moving, the condenser mic had decided to go South on you and the only sound you hear is the motor and a weak, faraway voice. Cleaning and demagnatizing the heads didn't work for me, either, so buy a recorder with a blinking red light that indicates what you're recording is what you're getting.
2-0 out of 5 stars Olympus Microcassette Recorder
I purchased this product and found that it was of relatively poor construction quality. After reasonable normal use the cassette door hinge broke. I elected not to send it back for repair as my need for this equipment passed, but I was surprised that such a key element of the recorder would be so fragile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only Okay
I was given this as an unexpected & thoughtful gift, but after working with it a bit, I don't think I'd chose the Olympus again. One basic design flaw is that it doesn't stand up very well on it's think rounded base. You can balance it, but it will topple over at the slightest disturbance.I compared it with my friend's Panasonic RN505 which is substantially heavier, but has a bigger, better speaker & is more stable. When I played my tape on her machine it seemed as if the microphones on both were comparable. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!!!
I had the recorder exactly 31 days before it stopped working entirely... I would NEVER have bought this item had I read these reviews first. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I have owned three of these "machines" and each time, they stop working after lessthatn a week for no reason. I wish I could post no stars.4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Suitible as an Analog Recorder
I don't understand the three one-star reviews on this product.I remember purchasing this recorder in probably Sep, Oct, or Nov, 2001 and have been pretty happy with it.I've played around with it a few times here and there, and overall it's not too bad.The microcassette tapes are pretty inexpensive; like $4.99 I believe for 3 microcassettes. The speaker is loud enough to hear the playback most of the time, and the microphone is at a convenient spot on the top of the recorder.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars vn series connect to pc's
It turns out that the Olympus instructions omit the second part of installing the drivers that allow download. I found instructions on another site.
1-0 out of 5 stars Just awful
1. Olympus doesn't provide drivers online. Why not? It's not like they have any value if you haven't purchased the player already.
1-0 out of 5 stars I bought it for the PC connectivity and Olympus won't support it
If you go to Olympus' website, you'd expect to find the driver for this DVR, but no...not Olympuss.Spend your money on a product that is supported...always.It's easy to google and see if they support their stuff. If support is the most difficult thing about them, there is a reason.
