5-0 out of 5 stars Great zoom lens - for film (and digital)
Having heard of some many "soft copies" of this lens, I was a little concerned when I purchased it. I shot 2 test rolls right after I got it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Quality to Price Ratio
I didn't want to pay over $1000 for the Canon EF 24-70 f2.8L. I can appreciate the quality of Canon L lenses. I have the 300 f4L IS & 70-200 f4L. I found many favorable reviews for this Tamron. I also found some reviews relating to focus issues. For 1/3 the price of the Canon, I decided to take a chance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Lens
I have always used just Canon lenses. After a Canon broke on me after a year and a half and was out of warranty I thought I would try this.It is a very nice lens with good quality and the 28-75 is so universal that I don't use my 70-300 Canon much any more. The 2.8 Aperature is very nice at the full 75MM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid Lens...
SHARP.I cannot say enough about this lens - I don't know where to start. The build feels completely solid and makes me feel like I have a new camera every time I use this lens.Indoor shooting is awesome and fun now with this lens.Using a flash indoors doesn't leave the dark background after 15 feet anymore.
5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about bang for your buck!
This is the kind of lens that makes me wish Canon would understand their market better. Instead of putting out a 17-55mm zoom that everyone can afford, they put out a EF-S non pro lens at a pro price, which has serious quality control issues. Tamron, however, responded.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture quality, decent price, right size ...

5. Tamron Autofocus 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Features

  • Since the lens is designed exclusively for digital SLR photography, it provides high image quality in terms of resolution, contrast and flatness of image field
  • It employs a new optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager within a certain scope over the entire image field from the center to the periphery, by considering the effects of variances due to zooming
  • Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras so that images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery
  • Complicated mechanisms are built in the compact body thanks to new mechanical artifices. The lens is a multi-purpose zoom lens, yet excellent portability and ease of use are assured. A number of invisible engineering innovations required to downsize the lens, produce high precision parts and increase durability are incorporated in the new AF18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO since manufacturing this type of zoom lens with such complicated mechanisms inside was almost impossib
  • The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination

3-0 out of 5 stars Pending arrival of lens -- comments regarding focusing problems
(Initial entry 2006.09.12)
3-0 out of 5 stars get what you pay for
I purchased this lens as a lightweight alternative to carrying around several different lenses when traveling. The zoom range is fantastic; and I thought I could live with some of the distortion and softness expected from a super-range zoom as a compromise for the convenience. However, I was very dissapointed with the performance of the lens otherwise. The autofocus on the lens is slow and has a difficult time with focus lock in even normal lighting, and in low light situations - forget it.Considering the price, I could evenbe ok with this, since I am fairly comfortable with manual focus, however, after only about 2 weeks of use with this lens my camera sometimes will flash "00" for the aperture setting will not shoot- an indication that the electrical connections on the lens are not making good contact.Re-mounting the lens solves the problem for short time and it re-appears. I'm hoping that my lens was just a defective copy.Overall, I would say if you are used to the "kit" lens, then this might be an inexpensive way to add a nice zoom range, however, if you're used to shooting with the canon USM lenses, you will be dissapointed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice for All-in-One lens for digital SLR
This is a very good choice for anyone shooting Canon Digital Rebels or 20D/30D series cameras, and wanting an all-in-one design that small and light weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome versatility, only minor drawbacks
Basically, this lens is AWESOME for most situations. It has true macro functions (wow!), and a zoom from slightly wide-angle all the way to 300mm!What more could you ask for? It's probably the perfect starter lens for your Canon, certainly it blows the doors off any kit lens.Images are really crisp, color is excellent. The lens is lightweight, and the wide range of magnification make it suitable for almost every situation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easily worth the price.
The auto focus is faster then I expected based on other reviews. The lens is pretty darn slow.Don't expect any decent shutter speeds for anything but very bright conditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great low-cost lens
With lenses, the rule of thumb is, more often than not, "you get what you pay for" - having said that, this lens is an exception. This is a great price for a lens in this focal range. While I'm sure there are better quality lenses out there (if you want to spend a lot more money), for an under $200 lens, this one's great! Construction is solid and the lens feels sturdy and not at all cheap. Auto focus is reasonably fast and manual focusing feels quite comfortable. The level of sharpness and overall image quality from this lens has been just fantastic. I have no complaints at all and am very happy with this lens. I'd reccommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive lens in this range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for dummies!
I use this lense a lot for capturing wild life and the first time I used it I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The autofocus mode is quick for those split second opportunity shots. It also does well as a macro lense so it serves a dual purpose.Did I also mention that I am just an amateur photographer? This lense is really easy to use too! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars nice lens for the price
a nice lens for the price. however, image is not very sharp at zoom. This is expected I guess for the price range. Focusing is pretty fast too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good lens withsome nice extras
The new Di lenses from Tamron are designed to work well with digital cameras, although those with the Di will work for 35mm as well (Di-II only work with smaller, APS-C chip size digital cameras). This is an improvement on the fine 70-300 LD (Low Dispersion glass) design. The major improvements in this lens are in the coatings, to help reduce any color bias, and minimize reflections.Additionally, lens manufacturers are doing more inside the barrels to reduce reflections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used exact same thing before... and will again!
This Objective is the best in this price range I have used. It works just great, light intensity is good enough, and I found it to be able to accomodate the strangest requests especially at the Cliffs of Mohare in Ireland, Malta and here in my homecountry, the U.S. Even with diffuse light situations, the Tamron still gives you some power to accomplish what you want.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tamron Autofocus 75-300mm f/4-5.6 LD with Hood for Pentax SLR Cameras
This lens works smoothly with my manual focus Pentax K1000. I just need to keep off the A (automatic) focus stop.
4-0 out of 5 stars Put this lens in your toolkit
The Tamron f/4-5.6 75-300 zoom is a great buy at the price. The zoom is very smooth and auto focus very responsive. Very nice optics. For outdoor work you can, almost, get away with this as the only lens. Results are crisp beautiful photos. Quality is vastly superior to the lenses generally included in a Pentax kit.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars May not be a Nikon but still a great lens
What a great lens.It is not perfect but I really like it.Currently I have only compared it side by side with my Nikon 135 3.5 prime and it holds up pretty good, I have done two side by side tests first one showed the nikon sharper and with better color saturation, but the second test I could not tell the difference. (I need to do some more tests)When I am shooting surfers ok kite surfing @~300, sometimes I go into manual focus because the AF is too slow or gets confused, also in low light I use MF too.I am using this on a D100 and the combination is great for a very flexible lightweight combination. For me this lens is sharp enough and helps me create some beautiful pictures having this big range offers in combination with digital, I take so many photo's so quickly that I come out with a good photo every couple of days (still only 1 in 500 shots :)5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around lens for amateurs
My husband has this lens for his XTSi, and he hasn't taken it off of his camera body since he got it two years ago.It does have some heft to it, and it does slow down the autofocus in low light conditions, but overall, it's a great lens for the amateur photographer, especially someone who doesn't want to invest hundreds in different zoom lenses and then have to lug all of them around with you. Also, not having to change lenses is a big bonus -- Never again will you ever miss a shot because you couldn't get in tight enough! ... Editorial Review

The Tamron AF28-80mm f3.5-f5.6 is a standard zoom lens with a wide to medium telephoto range of 28-80mm, providing great range for nature and landscape photography or snapshots and home photography. By using aspherical elements in the front optical group, Tamron reduced the total number of elements required. They also used strong, engineered plastic for the barrel, making the total lens body only 8.4 ounces. These features make this lens extremely versatile and lightweight. 3-0 out of 5 stars Very reasonable price for quality lens like this.
This lens is made with focus on the price and looks very affordable. His whole body is made from plastic which makes this lens very light. Also the focusing mechanism is outside of this lens which makes holding camera little difficult and you have to watch your fingers where they are if you do not want messed up the focusing mechanism or you can use manual focus. There is a better lenses on the market for not too much money then this in this class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice lens, not excellent quality
I bought this lens that came in a package deal with the Canon Rebel 2000 and the Tamron 100-300mm f/5-6.3. This is the lens that I use 90% of the time, and it has held up very well. The pictures come back very sharp and the quality of the prints are very good at most focal lengths. However, there are a few things I should note about this lens that I'm not too pleased with.Read more

Great Lens for me - im on a budget, superior warranty, great capabilities, perfect price.I started out with minolta, and their reliability is terrible, Nikon & Tamron are faar superior IT'S NOT JUST A NAME - the reputation means something here!

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
This is the lens that came packaged with my Nikon N80.I've used it for over 1 year and deem it average. The autofocus is slow and noisy.Lens flare is an issue at almost every focal length. And the focus ring rotates which makes using a circular polarizer something of a pain. For [the price]it is passable. However, I recommend that you dig deeper in your pockets and buy something more robust and without the aforementioned niggling problems.
