Editorial Review

The Meade ETX90EC is a compact telescope with excellent optics, packaged with a sturdy tripod and the remarkable Autostar computer control. Even though I own several telescopes and belong to an Astronomy club, the first night I took out the ETX, it showed me objects I'd never seen before. The ETX90EC is the computerized version of an affordable Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope first introduced by Meade in 1996. Every reviewer since then has commented on the excellent optics. How excellent? When I presented a session on optical testing at my local Astronomy club, I brought my ETX90 so that everyone could see what a "textbook" star test actually looks like. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars!
Okay, I know nothing about telescopes. But my husband and I bought this last summer because he thought it'd be fun to star gaze. When we did, it was truly one of the most wonderful experience ever! It allows you to observe celestial objects in brilliant resolution. It wasn't complicated and simple to use. But you do have to read the manual.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meade Does It Right
The Meade ETX90EC lives up to its billing. It's a high-quality piece of gear that exudes craft and workmanship. The bundled package w/Autostar and Tripod gives you most of what you need.If you have any intent of doing terrestrial viewing, you should consider the 45 degree erecting prism. Also, the package does not come with any power adapters. If you plan to be out for a long evening of star gazing, you will probably want the adapter that lets you plug into a cigarette lighter.I wish Amazon had the UHTC version available, but no luck. Finally, I haven't been able to find the correct T-mount adapter for this scope on Amazon.I do want to use it for photography eventually. The main thing I would say is that this is not a toy, but it is ideal for beginners to intermediate enthusiasts.I've had more fun in just a couple sessions than I've ever had before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Meade
This was my husband's big present for Christmas, something he has always wanted. While unwrapping and unpacking, he heard a rattle in the spotting scope.Upon investigation, he fished out a broken set screw and discovered that it had sheared off the outside of the spotting scope.Another screw was badly damaged. The eyepiece covers had all been left off when shipping. Also, all the settings were loose and had to be reset.Meade does not have an 800 number and you are put on hold interminably when you try to contact them. All in all, he likes the scope BUT was very disappointed in the quality of the manufacturer and lack of customer service. What a disappointment for Christams day! ... The Meade Polaris NGC-60AM telescope, which hails from Meade's Next Generation series, incorporates an advanced industrial design and high-quality instruments, making it a perfect fit for budding backyard astronomers and serious hobbyists. The scope's large, precision-bearing surfaces yield smooth manual motions as you track an object, while the ultra-modern appearance adds a cutting-edge touch to your sunroom or patio. The scope also offers a computer controller that directs you how to move the optical tube to best view more than 1,400 celestial objects. The computer display is great for viewing the major planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae that otherwise might be difficult to locate, instead helping you center them directly in the lens's field of view. Plus, the NGC-60AM makes a nice choice for such terrestrial tasks as bird watching, nature gazing, or neighborhood surveying. Read more

Explore the wonders of the universe from your backyard--or just check out the activity down the street--with the Meade Polaris 60EQ-A 60mm diameter refractor telescope. Ideal for budding astronomers and beginning stargazers, the telescope features an easy-to-use design that sets up in seconds, so you can start peering at stars, planets, and distant galaxies almost immediately. Meade's high-quality optical design starts with a 60mm diameter objective lens, coated for pinpoint sharpness, and two 1.25-inch eyepieces (one MH9mm and one MA25mm) to ensure a wide field of view. The focal length of 900 mm (with an f/15 ratio), meanwhile, isn't as powerful as many high-end telescopes, but still keeps celestial objects looking razor sharp. All of this on a fully adjustable aluminum tripod (with an accessory tray) that ensures a stable viewing platform with minimal vibration--the bane of telescopes everywhere. The scope's equatorial mount is particularly appealing, as its deluxe slow motion controls help users keep fast-moving objects centered in the field of view during extended observations. Other details include a 5x24mm viewfinder and a 2x Barlow lens with a 1.25-inch diagonal mirror.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere...
Bought this scope on a whim as astronomy and the study of the stars has always been of interest to me since I was a kid. Set up was relatively easy, but once I looked through it...oh the disappointment. I was able to set up the viewfinder, but mount failed to keep objects within the finders field of view. And once you get something in the scope, the vibration and poor mount make it impossible to even focus without causing the scope to go into an irritating bout of shaking. I tried it for 4-5 nights in a row, and returned it. I went out and bought a cheap 10X50 set of binoculars and they work as well, without headache of this scope.

Get a better view whether traveling through a wildlife preserve, watching your favorite baseball team, or just surveying the neighborhood with these compact Meade DCS binoculars. Boasting a power of 7x and an 18mm objective lens design, the lightweight binoculars (they weigh only 4.1 ounces) are terrific for daytime viewing, though the small lens diameter makes them somewhat less useful when the lighting is poor. The binoculars also feature fully coated single-layer optics for clear viewing and a comfortable 10.5 mm of eye relief. More importantly, the field of view stands at 488 feet at a distance of 1,000 yards, with a near focusing distance of 15 feet. As a result, all but the most distant objects look crisp and vivid.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
Watch out! These are made in China and mine had an inherent defect. The barrels are so misaligned that the combined image is a double. This can't be easily fixed, and Meade charges $20 for warranty repairs.Very disappointing that Meade would sell such trash. As an astronomer I have spent $$$ on Meade scopes, but will give serious consideration to Celestron now.
2-0 out of 5 stars Over priced clearance item! $79?! Not even worth $15!
I bought this one because it's light weight (4.1 oz.). I was looking for a small binoculars for my 4-year-old son. With the original price almost $80, "It must be good!" I thought! I paid $15 during Friday Sale. I thought I got bargain until I received it today with huge disappointment. It's hard to focus by adjust each eye, hard to see clear with tiny small lenses. I felt tense after using it for a while, don't even mention my young son will know how to use it! My daughter has a Canon 8x23A, which is in very good quality and easy for kids to use. After doing some search, I found Meade outlet is selling this Meade DCS 7x18 on eBay for $7.95 with free shipping due to this item is a closeout! This binoculars will be good for watching plays, shows, concert, whichever doesn't require focusing too often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ETX 90 EC is best little telescope for the Price!
I got it, I like it, and it works fine. If you want a fine little telescope this is the one....

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have Telescope for people new to astromony
I've had my telescope for over six months and wouldn't trade it for anything. This is a great telescope and it is very crispt in the viewing of stars and planets. I love it and for the money it can't be beat. If you are new to astronomy you need this scope. I saw Saturn a few nights ago and saw the rings very clearly. I brought a dew shield and two more eyepieces for it and they helped make the scope even more fantastic. I got a 18 mm wide and 13.3 mm super wide Meade eyepieces. You will also need autostar for a tour of all that is in the sky at night. You can see 14,ooo objects and hundreds more if you download them from the internet with an adapter which cost a few extra dollars more. I bought a deluxe field Meade tripod. You need this one because it keeps the image that you are looking at stable. This is the best telescope you can buy for the money and the best type too. I love my ETX-90 EC and plan on keeping it for the rest of my days of viewing the universe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks good on display, actual quality not so good.
The optics and overall look is ok with this one, but all platic mountings and foucusing/tracking gear mechanisms needs to be reconsidered by MEADE R&D team.
4-0 out of 5 stars 90 mm Meade scopes good and hard-to-find
This is the most bang for the buck there is, a 90mm Meade refractor. The 80mm is typically available, but 90's are generally hard to find. With an 80 being the smallest "serious" scope according to concensus, the 90 gives you additional observing opportunities. That is, you'll see more objects than the usual 60mm "kiddie" scopes, and will have observing opportunies to see other objects beyond the moon, saturn, jupiter, moon, saturn, jupiter, moon.....Little scopes mean you see the same thing over and over.Get this 90mm if you can't' afford/don't have room in the house for a bigger scope. It's affordable, won't take up too much room, and is portable (light) enough that you'll actually take it outside and use it.Bigger scopes often sit because nobody wants to carry 70 pounds into the back yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
Excellent value, easy to use, find objects manually or with GoTo, sleek looking.Note:Larger than appears in picture.Love it! ... Read more

A nice choice for budding backyard astronomers who want to get a closer look at the night sky, the Meade Jupiter 60AZ-MF telescope features a 60mm, two-element objective lens that makes faraway celestial objects appear razor sharp. The three eyepieces, meanwhile (SR4mm, H12.5mm, and H25mm), cover a host of observational conditions, with variations to cover how much eye relief you need, the desired field of view, and the sky's current outlook. The focal length of 700mm (with an f/11 ratio) isn't as robust as many higher-powered telescopes, but is still solid for an entry-level unit. All of this on a fully adjustable hardwood tripod (with an accessory tray) that gives you a stable viewing platform to prevent excessive vibration--the bane of telescopes everywhere. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner or casual celestial observer!
This is not the best telescope on the market, but for the price, you definitely can't go wrong. I was amazed at the quality and clarity. With the 9mm lens, you can easily see the rings of Saturn as well as the clouds of Jupiter. With the purchase of a stronger lens and even a magnifier, you are able to get even more definition of celestial objects including but not limited to planets, nebula, and lunar craters. If you are a beginner, or just enjoy the night sky as I do, this is a great way to enhance the experience and maybe learn something along the way.

A step up from entry-level 60mm refractor telescopes, the remanufactured Meade DS-114ATE features a 114mm primary mirror that produces images three-and-a-half times brighter than objects seen through comparable 60mm lenses, making planets, stars, and other celestial bodies look remarkably sharp and clear. The scope is still a great fit for budding backyard astronomers and hobbyists, but the upgraded lens gives the DS-114ATE added value, as does the Autostar computer controller, which automatically adjusts the optical tube to track more than 1,400 celestial objects. The dual motor control and pinpoint tracking helps you easily view the major planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae that otherwise might be difficult to locate, instead centering them directly in the lens's field of view. 3-0 out of 5 stars not highly recommended
First off, this is NOT a refracting telescope as the description says, it is a reflector (that is amazon's error, not meade's).Realize that with a reflector you must take care of your mirrors and keep them well collimated on a regular basis or your images will suffer. That's the downside of a reflector. My experience with this is that the autostar is very finnicky, right out of the box. I have owned 3 meade telescopes with the goto system and there has been problems in ALL 3 of them, including this one. The optics however are some of the best so... save your money and buy an instrument with larger aperture without the goto function...you'll be happy you did since finding your way around the sky with starmaps and a larger aperture to see the faint fuzzies is the best way to learn and you won't have to put up with the system failures that autostar gives you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like New!Love this thing!
Let me preface this review by stating that this is the 1st telescope I have ever bought.I did some research about what to look for in a telescope, but I'm no astronomer.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good deal
Generally, when you think of something that has been factory refurbished you assume certain things will be fixed or replaced if they show damage or excessive wear.I'm not sure who works in the Meade refurb department but I'm guessing they were having a rotten day that day.
