5-0 out of 5 stars Happy in Arizona--But error on Product specs
I purchased this camera as a replacement for a Pentax Super Program that had given many years of faithful service.According to a Pentax rep via their website, this model is the closest one in their current lineup to match the features of the Super Program.I just received it and am testing it, but it is light, easy to handle, and easy to learn. It allowed me to "salvage" my AF280T flash, and several pretty expensive Vivitar Series 1 Zoom lenses.I agree with the one reviewer who mentioned that the lens mount is plastic.I too worry a little about the wear and tear over time, compared to the "old" metal mounts. The only real disappointment (not a big one) is that the product specs on this website are in error re: TTL flash metering. This camera is not TTL compatible. However, it does sync with dedicated flash units on "auto" but you can't use the TTL setting.Unfortunately I only found that out after ordering it, via a Pentax service rep.....It's a really nice camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Camera!
This is a great camera. I got it to replace my K1000 for the convenience of automatic film loading and the more accurate matrix metering. I've had this camera since 1998 and have had no problems. It takes sharp, perfectly exposed pictures, and is easy to operate. The dials and knobs are easy to figure out - you don't need the manual to start taking photos. I have two other Pentax SLR bodies (K1000, ZX-5N) but this is my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, simple body
I am a high school photo student and this is the first SLR I bought. It is a very simple camera, akin the the K1000 (An all manual TANK!), but with a few extra luxuries like an automatic film winder and aperture priority mode. A great camera if you don't mind manually focusing, especially for still life type photos. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a basic camera that takes great photos. ... Read more

I have only owned this camere about 3 months, so far I absolutely love this Pentax ZX-L, I own A Minolta, Olympus OM-1, Olympus 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best from a long trusted brand
If you have ever own a Pentax camera before you knew that the quality of their product speaks for itself. This ZX-L camera is no exception to the rule.It is well designed with lots of features.I'm not very good in going into detail of all the features it has on the camera but I'm sure impressed by it.Checkout the spec. of this camera you will find that a lot of the function offered by the model are usually found on a much higher end (more expensive) of SLR.Read more

Pentax's new ZX-7 offers compact size, solid performance, ease of use,and impressive capability. The ZX-7 offers the photographer both auto and manualfocus. The camera has three autofocus (AF) points for sensing the subject andwill automatically switch to predictive AF mode if it detects subject movement. The AF system is focus priority, so the shutter is locked until the camerafocuses on something, virtually guaranteeing that you won't shoot a picture thatisn't focused. If you prefer to use the manual focus setting, the AF statuslight will glow when you have achieved correct focus.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Camera
I have had this camera for almost 3 years now. In this time I have taken shots in a variety of settings and each time it has surprised me with amazing pics. The Auto mode is very good and usually good except in low light (twilight kind of situations). Auto focus is reasonable again except in very low light where you may need to use manual focus. Overall the Pentax Body and Pentax lens very good. You may want to buy an additional lens for telephoto requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this nice camera!!
I have owned this camera since last Christmas. It's very convenient and easy to use and picture quality is great. I have taken more than 7 rolls and have no complaint. I really like its auto mode. In particular, I was so impressed by its "night power". I went to Las Vegas and took some nice night scenens without flash. The result was more than amazing. My friend told me that the pictures looked like post cards.5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BEGINNER CAMERA
THIS CAMERA IS WONDERFUL FOR EXCELLENT QUALITY PICTURES AND ITS EASY TO USE. The SAFOX VI phase-matching autofocus system assures that the Pentax ZX-30 camera body gives you high-precision, high-speed autofocus operation, even under low light conditions. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good, fast, sturdy little camera
When I was 15 years old my dad bought me a Pentax K-1000 which I used until I purchased my ZX-30 about a year ago.The great thing about learning on the K-1000 was that it was 100% manual, so I was forced to learn all about f-stop and shutter speeds.

Designed for advanced photographers yet easy enough to use for the budding amateur, the ZX-7 is fully equipped with amazing features. It's most impressive standard feature is the Auto Picture Mode, which automatically selects one of five picture modes: landscape, close-up, action, portrait, or standard program. The latter setting is based on your subjects' distance, lens focal length, and movement; the ZX-7 then tells you the camera's decision via the illuminated mode dial. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad while it lasted.
The camera started showing problems two weeks into use. The winding mechanism would not rewind 36 exp rolls, then 24 exp rolls, then it wouldn't wind the film past the 4th or 5th exp on a fresh roll, and at the end, it wouldn't even spool up a fresh roll. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter for Neo Film SLR users
I bought this camera for my neice who is starting college and has plans to be a journalist. She wanted a camera to get started with and one that would fit her needs at school. I looked at the photography classes the college offered and what they expected, so for the price I ended up here. As I am partial to Pentax (none of my bodies or lenses have ever failed me) I looked at other brands before I went back to my old standby. I even bought one myself first (found it on clearance for well under a $100 at a local department store) and tried it out, I was suprised that it functioned so well for appearing so light and like a lot of new Film SLR's cheap. but it did the job and worked with all my lenses, though not all of the functions worked on all the lenses. Some of the older Manual one's didn't even et the metering function work properly. But overall I was pleased with this as a starter camera for someone who has to use a Film SLR but has no experince.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pentax MZ-60 (non-US version)
I purchased the MZ-60 model which is simply a renamed ZX-60. This camera, contrary to the previous review, will use manual lenses but only in manual mode. I have used manual focus lenses with no "A" aperture setting with this camera - you can also fake having depth-of-field preview with automatic-aperture lenses by slightly unscrewing the lense and moving to your desired aperture setting. The light metre will still function this way in manual mode. 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent camera, but not compatible with manual lenses
I purchased this camera to replace an old Pentax ME, but I had to promptly return it, as it is not compatible with older Pentax manual lenses. While it seems to be a quality camera, it will only be useful to you if you have autofocus lenses. Though the price is atractive this will probably not be the best camera for a student for just this reason. In the future I will likely buy the Pentax ZX-5N instead. ... Read more

The heart of the Pentax PZ-1p camera body is its upgraded SAFOX II (sensor ability fortifying optical compensation system) sensor unit. By upgrading the focus system, Pentax guarantees accurately focused images, even under extremely poor lighting conditions. If your subject is on the move, the high-speed predictive AF mode can calculate the position of a fast-moving subject at shutter release. As a result, a subject on the move is always captured in sharp focus. To further optimize the focusing accuracy of this camera, it also comes equipped with an AF spot-beam projector. When combined with SMC Pentax FA power zoom lenses, the PZ-1p offers three-speed, one-touch power zooming which assures speedy, accurate framing with easy control of the zoom ring.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is it doscontinued what a shame.
I own this model as well as the ZX-m. I concur with the other reviewers this camera is excellent. Much better than the MZ-S and other brands dollar for dollar. It's a shame it has been discontinued

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST professional SLR for the money
I have several cameras by several manufacturers and I can honestly say that my Pentax cameras are the best performers.5-0 out of 5 stars Best price/performance ratio SLR
Sadly Pentax discontinued this model in favour of their new flagship MZ-S. Let me tell you theyre different cameras. While the MZ-S is a fully pro- oriented body, PZ-1p is an outstanding all-around gear. It has many features only found in great great Canon or Nikon models, obviously much higher priced. Examples of this is its 4 fps drive motor, 1/8000 top shutter speed, or 1/250 flash sync, and interchangeable focusing screens.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying product from Pentax.
Pentax ZX-7 could be suitably placed in the "most bang for the bucks" category. It is a feature laden camera(useful features and not just bells and whistles) which will satisfy both the amateurs as well as the pros. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera
The zx-7 is just a wonderful camera. It is so easy to use and we still have yet to shoot a bad picture. I enjoy it so much that I went out and bought the Sigma 300mm lens for it-awesome. The best thing is when you upgrade to a new flash-the camera and flash communicate with each other before the photo is taken. This camera has the most options for the price. I recommend this camera to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Camera for Beginner to Intermediates
I bought this camera without any knowledge of Photography. All I have ever used is point and shoot cameras and this was my first SLR.I reviewed all the SLR cameras in the market for a long time and ultimately decided on this. The best part of this camrera is that it has a metal mount unlike others in its range which have plastic mounts. I use a 28-200 Tamron lens and it is a big and heavy lens but the metal mount has no problems. I use my camera roughly but it is so solidly built that it has no effect on it. The pictures are perfect. My wife who cannot take good pics even with a point and shoot digital cameras, takes awesome pictures with this camera. The other good part with this camera is that it has Memory Lock. Look for the ML key on the back top right hand corner of the camera. That's a very important feature which Nikon N65 and Rebel 2000 have excluded. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera
This camera is great. It was the first "real" camera I bought for myself when I started photography back in high school, years later I still have and use this camera. It's simple and easy to use with out being just a point-and-shoot. Perfect camera to learn on, and can use most of the older Pentax lenses.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's just plain great!
i have had this camera for about a year and i am yet to take a bad picture with it. it does lack a flash though and the lense that mine came with did not have auto-focus, so it is a camera for those who are into serious photography. it does have many automatic settings though, so it is easy to use overall. i hope that other people enjoy this camera as much as i have.

Though the Pentax ZX-5N autofocus camera body has all of the popular attributes of its predecessor, the ZX-5, several sophisticated features--such as six-segment metering, center-weighted metering, spot metering, as well as a TTL phase-matching autofocus system--have been added. A single turn of the metering mode switch lets you select one of the three metering mode options, giving you full control in any lighting situation. The automatic exposure compensation, which works with the multipattern metering system in the autoexposure mode, lets you try many creative options. Pentax's original electronic control mechanism also lets you preview your image in any exposure mode. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic concept, but limited flexibility.
I really love this camera! Why do I then just rate it as a 4? Although I think this camera deserved to be SLR of the year when it came, it lacks some of the flexibility that would be nessessary for a 5 rating. The manual shutter speeds are to few and too far apart. The shortest shutter speed is 1/2000 and the longest 2 seconds, which somewhat limits your ability for different light situations. Otherwise, the handling of the camera makes it easy and logical to work with. No need to spend ours reading the manual to be able to take advantage of the different exposure modes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
My first camera was a Pentax ME which I wore out.Because I had such good luck with the ME, I purchased this camera as a replacement.I found it very easy to use and the built in flash with the red-eye flash to be very helpful. My only complaint is that if you use the built in flash the batteries in the camera do not last as long. Also the built in flash does not light large areas very well.I like the fact that the camera will not take a picture if there is not enough light.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm still a huge PENTAX fan after 20+ years with them!
I grew up in a photography family and my Dad gave me a Pentax MX when I was pretty young. It was great for high school yearbook photos and photography class, then later on in college for more photo classes.I ended up with a Minolta Maxxum for a little while (4si, I believe) and ended up finding every little limitation it had and being very annoyed with it in the long run. Then it occurred to me that that wonderful "brick" MX that I had had for so long was still great, so why not try a modern Pentax. After great debate as to which model to purchase, I settled on the ZX-5 (the predecessor to the ZX-5n...the same without one or two little options). The reason I chose it was because the layout of the controls was so intuitive, as the MX was...I could switch easily from one to the other with no difficulty whatsoever.I am a semi-professional photographer and have done everything from private model photo shoots to wedding photography and have loved every minute with my ZX-5 and have come out with some great results!I highly recommend this to any photographer who is in classes due to the fact that it has a full manual mode, to the amateur who just wants better quality photos than the little point and shoots produce, or even the professional due to the many settings on the camera and accessories that are readily available for this model. If you are looking for something similar in Nikon, Canon, or Minolta, then check this one out and I bet you 9 times out of 10 that the Pentax has a better price...same for the accessories! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great camera for film lovers!
I purchased this camera and lens kit for a birthday present to myself recently.I have not gone "digital" yet, as the price of the SLRs, printers, etc. are beyond my means at the moment, plus most of the SLRs within reach are only 6.1 megapixel. My experience with point and shoot type digicams is that they are fine for a couple of photos, then the game is over:the batteries have run down and unless you carry several spares or can wait until they recharge, you're out of luck.I live near Washington DC, and my photo jaunts involve museums, monuments, etc. with plenty of walking and the camera at the ready.Digitals just do not work for me. Previous to this purchase I had also purchased another autofocus/autoexposure camera this year of another make.I have owned and used manual focus/aperture or shutter priority cameras for over 20 years, all of them Yashica or Contax (unfortunately, Yashicas are no more...) until this year.I bought it and the Pentax to use, and plan to save the Contax and the best Yashicas for the sake of posterity and not risk breaking them.

4-0 out of 5 stars no complaints after one year of use
After trying out a Canon EOS1 and a Nikon F100, I bought a Pentax MZ-S because it feels more like a camera rather than a computer. Yes, this is an all-electronic camera but the controls are similar to the analog/mechanical cameras -- to change the shutter speed you rotate the shutter speed dial, to change the aperture you turn the aperture ring. This is also the smallest and the lightest professional SLR I have seen. The all-metal body is comfortable to hold and there is a grip protrusion even on the left side. This is also one of the few pro SLRs with a built-in flash which comes in handy when you want to travel light and need a fill-flash. The depth-of-field preview lever is conveniently located as a ring around the shutter button. There is no manual mirror lockup option but you can use the 2 second timer which locks the mirror then opens the shutter 2 seconds later. The exposure data imprint is a nice option which prints the speed and f stop on the film outside the frame. The slanted top panel isn't exactly a life-changing innovation but it is a nice touch.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a delight
I have had my *ist D for about a month. What a delight to own and use. I like almost everything about it. I am a long time Pentax owner with a collection of lenses so have never considered any other brand as I patiently waited for Pentax to come out with a digital camera. I am so not disappointed. As a camera, not considering the digital part, it is the best of all the ones I have (LX, ZX-M, ZX-5n, ME, ME Supper, Spotmatic, etc). It is well balanced and small. I love the controls and the features. You may read reviews that say the memory card is difficult to remove. With my ScanDisk flash this is not a problem. Just tilt the camera slightly, press the release with your thumb and the card magically moves to your hand. It is really very easy, the trick is you don't try and grab it, you let it come to you. The first time I used it I took over 200 high-resolution JPEG shots of my daughters ballet performance. I used my old 85mm f2 lens and it was wonderful in the dim light. I also have the two new zooms (18-55 and 75-300) and recommend both as they are very reasonable in cost. The only thing I don't like is that using the old manual lenses requires either full aperture (OK for my use so far) or a manual setting of the exposure as you cannot do stop down metering as far as I have been able to find. Other than that, I like everything. The only point to consider is that I have no knowledge of any of the competitive digital cameras, have never even held one. But when you are in love with the one you have, who cares about the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good new camera
This is an excellent new camera.Pentax has definitely innovated in the design and manufacture of the *ist. The form factor and light weight, yet well constructed, make it seem like a next generation camera compared to the Canon Rebel Ti and the Nikon N75 (both very good cameras also). The advanced features are all easy to access and use on the *ist, or you can use the pre-programmed mode wheel (sports, macro, landscape, portrait, etc.) to let the *ist make the decisions. So far, the pre-programmed modes have produced excellent photos in a variety of conditions.Read more
