3-0 out of 5 stars Nice range, but too many compromises
I bought this lens as an upgrade for my original Digital Rebel (300D).The range which is the equivalent of 28-200 on a full frame camera, was very versatile. However, I had one of the lenses with focusing problems.I was always forced to use center point focusing, which isn't a big problem because I usually do that anyway. However, even with that strong method of focusing, I was still getting a 30% miss rate. And if I dared let the camera choose the focal points? The miss rate shot up much higher.Colors and sharpness aren't bad as long as you step the lens down to f/6.3-f/8.I just couldn't get past the missed focusing, and the resulting poor pictures.I got a great deal on a Canon 24-85 lens, and am much happier with that.It only misfocuses about 5% of the time - and I can live with that level of error.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very versatile lens with acceptable shortcomings.
The good:
5-0 out of 5 stars A great lens at a great price
after reading through all different reviews on what lenses to get for my Rebel XT, i decided to go with this one, and I love it! The color is great, and the quality of the picture is definitely better than the 18-55mm Canon lens that came with the kit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Lens
I have a Minolta Maxxim 400i that came with the 35-70mm lens.On a vacation, the lens mounting was broken.I looked at Minolta as well as third party lenses.I have been very pleased with the abilities of the Sigma 28-135mm lens. The added versitility of the wider zoom range means I don't have to change lenses as often. The lens mounting is metal as well. The only drawback, and this is questionable due to its advantages, is the 62mm filter size. But, I like having the large objective lens for light gathering ablilty.I would highly recomend the Sigma lenses.I would say they are at least as good as Minolta lenses.

4-0 out of 5 stars affordable alternative
This lens is a top preformer. It is a solid lens for the novice photography enthusiast. I use it with black and white film as well as some basic color films and everytime the photo turns out nice. The only drawback is the lens construction. It just feels like it is really delicate. Minolta lenses seem to be constructed more sturdy. But hey, just be careful with your camera and everything will be ok. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Sigma 17-35mm f2.8 EX aspherical HSM lens combines a fast f2.8-f4 maximum aperture with an ultra-wide-angle zoom of 17-35mm. Also, by incorporating aspherical lens elements in the front and rear lens groups, it corrects spherical aberration that could distort your images. The internal focusing system prevents the deterioration of optical quality when you are at a close distance to your subject, and it eliminates the rotation of the front barrel during focusing. The AF drive comes equipped with a silent, responsive hypersonic motor that lets you photograph your subjects without disturbing them. This lets you capture amazing wildlife shots without the noise of an ordinary AF lens. The lens materials used in this lens are lead-free and arsenic-free ecological glass. This model is dedicated to Minolta AF SLR cameras. ... Read more
