5-0 out of 5 stars versatile wide-angle
I got it because I intend to use it on both my film and my digital bodies. For ultra wide angles I'll use it with film (Nikon N-80) and for more conventional wide angle with my Nikon D-200.It's one of three lenses I'm taking with me on vacation to the mountain states. The others are a Nikkor 28mm - 85mm and a Nikkor 70mm - 300mm with 2X Tamron SP doubler. Since I don't yet have photoshop or similar I wanted to be able to take real wide shots without having to paste them together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blazing fast focusing!!
The HSM of this lens is faster than Nikon 80-200 on D70s (it hunt around 2 times when i tried to focus on my frd who was in blue/white stripes at opposite side of a tennis court walking to me) and Sigma 70-200 on 350D.How fast is that?I could say that it is as fast as the EF-S 18-55 kit lens!Do bear in mind, usually wide lenses focuses faster than tele.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent non Canon L lens
I have numerous Canon L lens, the 135L, the 200L, 24-70L, the 70-40L, additionally the canon 60 mm macro lens, the 50mm f/1.4, and the 85 f/1.8, lens; this lens and the Tamron 200-500 zoom are the only non Canon lens that I own. This lens stays on my camera more then any of the above lenses. The 2.8 aperture, the ability to do macro and 150 mm distance gives it such flexibility that it stays on my camera 1Ds the most and it is often on my 20d (the 1.6 multiplier makes it a little less flexible).

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use
I am a beginner in using SLR.I used this lens to take several photos of my watch.this lens will hunt around for about 2 times if you set it to full focus range. The viewfinder looks reasonably bright.HSM is silent, seems to be silent than my Canon 50 F1.4 USM.However, this lens is SUPER difficult to use.It is a 150mm Macro lens. The depth of field is so short when focusing close and at F2.8.How short is that?just take a look with the watch photo i uploaded.(the 3 hands are just about total thickness of 1mm ...)So, if you want to have decent depth of field, you need to narrow it down to about F11 or even smaller. You will need a tripod in this case... And, Even slight movement of flowers caused by wind will make it out of focus... ( I actually use AI-servo when using this lens to take flowers~!)Don't spend money on this lens unless you are a pro in macro photography.Wait for the 70-200 Macro...

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp.2.8 is nice but be warned...
This lens is very sharp.I usually buy Canon L but I made the expeption for this one after reading other reviews. This lens is on par with L sharpness and gives you some good working distance if you are shooting something that scares easy.Be warned though, if this is your first macro lens and/or first experience with macro photography, when you get close, your focus area is tiny and particualrly at f2.8!If you don't already have one you may want to get a tripod as well.I was able to get some handheld shots with a lot of light from a window so I could use higher f stops. ... Editorial Review

Sigma's 180mm F3.5 EX IF HSM macro lens lets you take life-size, 1:1 images without the use of accessories. When shooting at this magnification, you can be a full 18.1 inches from your subject, ideal when your subject may be easily disturbed. In addition to the life-size images, this lens also uses the silent HSM (hyper-sonic motor) so you can truly capture those hard-to-get images without disturbing your surroundings or subject.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best telephoto macro lenses in its class
I read an enthusiastic review of this lens in Shutterbug magazine about a year ago, in which its performance was compared favorably with similar lenses made by Canon and others. Without question, this lens has both the optical and mechanical performance one expects from first class premium lenses made by Canon and Nikon. I was especially impressed to see superb photographs taken by this lens for both closeup and nature photography. Unless one truly has a compelling reason for the Canon 180mm macro lens - and the only ones I can think of is that maybe its autofocusing is quieter with slightly better optical performance - then I suspect that the typical user of Canon 35mm autofocus SLRs will be quite satisfied with this lens. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest lenses being offered by a distinguished third party lens manufacturer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic lens for all occassions
I've had this lens in my bag for almost five years and have used it countless times with my EOS 3.I use it both for macro and for normal photography due to its extreme clarity as well as it's fast focus motor. While in macro, depending on your composition, it may have do some motor searching in order to obtain focus, but outside of macro the focus is very fast.I often use it with the automatic eye focus on the EOS 3 and this lens performs beautifully. The *extra* 80mm gives you some valuable distance from potentially nasty subjects, (i.e. bees), and yields more camera position versatility over the Canon 100mm macro model, contradicting a previous reviewers post. The glass is very clear and sharp. If I have to pack light, this lens is the one lens going in my small shoulder bag. It's well worth the money, believe me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent lens, equivalent to Canon
I hope no one takes John B. Stafford's word here. Research the web for reviews on this lens and see the samples of what it can deliver. Most pros agree that this lens is not only extremely well build but it delivers very sharp and contrasty images on par with anything that Canon lenses can do, if not better. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I purchased this for a Canon 30D becauseshoot low light situations.I have had success with Sigma lenses before so I thought this would be a good lense to have.It is extremely slow to react and to auto focus and my low light photos actually did not come out any better than with previous lenses.I think it is better suited for portraits than action shots. If I had used this previously, I would not have purchased it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Travel Solution
Admit it, many of you are looking for that one lens solution for the times when you just can't bring all your gear. For me, this is that solution. I have used this lens extensively on my KM5D and find it to be quite usable. Yes, it is a megazoom. Yes, it has problems, but these are compensated for the sheer convenience. I find the lens to be rather sharp and colors to be quite nice as well. The price is certainly reasonable and the build quality is quite good (i.e. metal mount). I highly reccomed this lens, but be aware that it is not "G" (or "L" for you Canon folks) glass. Once you get by that, you can appreciate the lens for what it is. I highly reccomend the PTlens plugin for photoshop to use with this lens to correct distortions, vignetting, etc. Highly reccomended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous images
I've had this lens for three years. It takes absolutely wonderful portraits. If you want to see someone as you have never seen them before, take a full frame portrait shot of them using a Canon 10D or 20D with this lens. Gorgeous.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZINGLY SHARP AND FAST SUPER-WIDE ANGLE
I have used this lens extensively with the 1D and the Rebel XT.Results have been excellent. My suspicion is that the previous reviewer got a defective or damaged copy of the lens.It is incredibly sharp, even at f1.8, which I did not expect - generally you expect a lens to be a bit soft wide open, especially 1.8.The degree of sharpness of this lens is quite surprising.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sounds good on paper . . .
I'm amazed at how inferior this lens is. It looks good. It feels good, and I like the focus clutch mechanism. The specs are great and just what I wanted for my EOS 10D: a wide, fast, fixed focal length lens. I had never bought a third party lens before.
