Editorial Review

The Sigma APO 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX DG HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras is a high-magnification zoom lens with a 10x zoom ratio. The advanced optical design of the lens is optimized for digital SLR cameras, and the super coating on each glass surface produces superb color rendition, while reducing flare and ghosting. This lens uses four pieces of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass for excellent correction of color aberration throughout the entire zoom range. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides quiet high-speed AF function, as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens also features a Zoom Lock device to eliminate "zoom creep" when the lens is tilted down. When the lens is set to the 50 millimeter focal length, it is remarkably compact and provides easy handling. The tripod mount is composed of magnesium, to minimize total weight. It is also easy to grip and carry the lens due to ergonomic design of the tripod mount. Non-rotating front lens elements, due to the rear focus mechanism, make possible the use of a custom bayonet "petal-type hood," which prevents extraneous light from degrading the image quality. This mechanism also allows the use of circular polarizing filters, since the front barrel does not rotate during focusing or zooming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lens for a great price
The auto focus is super quiet and reasonably fast in most situations, although mounted on my D30 it does get confused in complex lighting. This is a BIG and HEAVY lens.I use the neck strap provided with the lens, as well as the strap on the camera at the same time.Although I'm probably overcautious, I don't trust the weight of the lens hanging from the camera without extra support.Mounted on a monopod, it is well balanced although following birds in flight presents a challenge.Optically, it's truly beautiful through all f stops. It looks like it will take any abuse I can reasonably give it, being solidly constructed and manufactured to very precise tolerances. I wanted a quality super telephoto and I got one at a great price. ... Read more

The Sigma APO Teleconverter 1.4x EX DG for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras is a dedicated APO teleconverter that can be mounted between select lenses and the camera body to increase the focal length by the power of 1.4. The multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. The lens also offers maximum magnification without any variation in the minimum focusing distance. Compact and lightweight, this teleconverter can convert your lenses into longer focal-length lenses, so you don't have to do a lot of unnecessary footwork. A case for the lens is included. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't afford the Bigma?Buy this!
Much has been written praising the Sigma 50-300 lens, often called the "Bigma."This lens is clearly its equal in everything but zoom range.I was very surprised when I purchased mine, used, and discovered that its sharpness was much better than I expected, and its autofocus speed every bit fast enough for challenging subjects like sports. The price I paid for this under-rated lens was about a third the price of a new Bigma, so I am extremely pleased with the bargain I got.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tele Zoom for the money
After reading many mixed reviews on the web, I wasn't too sure about the picture quality when I received it. But it turns out to be an excellent big zoom for the money. I have no other 500mm lenses for comparison. But the pictures I took in dark night outdoor (tripod) and some indoor shots (hand held with flash) on Canon Rebel XT turned out to be really sharp, comparing toshots I took with Canon 50mm/f1.4, Sigma 10-20mm, or Canon 70-200L/f4 under very similar conditions. Color is balanced and contrast amd detail are superb! The weight is very reasonable. The collar is excellent. The AF works beautifully indoor in regular household light. Very fast and quiet, unlike anything I've read on the web ("noisy, slow, hunting"). In fact, my other two above mentioned Canon lenses seem to hunt more sometimes under the similar condition. This lens doesn't have zoom lock, so it does creep if not careful. But for about $500 less than the Bigma and tons less than similar Canon's, it's a very small price to pay indeed. The focus ring is kinda loose, but so is the Canon 50/f1.4. My Canon L and Sigma EX don't have this problem. You get what you paid for. The lens hood feels plastic, but reasonable. The collar is very solid and smooth. The carrying bag that comes with the lens is of reasonable quality but looks like it's not for serious outdoor abuse. As a amateur enthusiast, I am totally happy with it. 5 stars for the value/price ratio. I am waiting for my $80 Quantaray 2x Teleconverter to arrive to try it on this Sigma. Maybe this time I am really pushing my luck :) If you are on a budget and looking for a 500mm, This Sigma definitely worthes a closer look. Highly recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars beware
do a little research and don't be fooled. Sigmas are generally a hit or miss thing for the lens quality. And worse off if you travel with the camera..seals are not at all reliable. Last but not least go ito a store and compare the drive noise on this unit to any other brand...very very noise...sorry i can not recommend them. Nikon, Tamron, Tokina...I personally prefer Nikon and Tokina...good luck

2-0 out of 5 stars Sigma 18 -125 f3.5-5.6 lens
I bought this lens to use with my Canon EOS300D.Buyers should beware of the noticeable vignetting - in my opinion this problem is not acceptable in a lens of this price. Sigma should have sorted this out before putting it on the market. On the plus side is the convenient zoom range and the compact size.I guess it depends on whether you consider these benefits outweigh the vignetting problems.Yes, it can be corrected with imaging software, but who wants to have to correct every picture that has an area of sky or other light subject matter in the corners?

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific all-purpose digital lens, but be realistic
I bought this lens so that when I travel using my Nikon D100 I could have an all-in-one zoom that would spare me the inconvenience of constantly changing lenses.I have not regretted this purchase, as for most situations the resulting photos are quite satisfactory. However, potential buyers should be aware that any lens that is designed to "do it all" involves compromises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bargain for the price!
I keep reading all type of reviews about this bundle. What often misleads buyers like me, is people comparing this lenses with the Canon L ones. That is not a fair comparison since L lenses similar to this ones will cost between 6 to 10 times more. Definitely, if you are a pro and you take pictures for National Geographic, ESPN, etc. dont buy this lenses because generally, those companies will pay for the L ones or pay you enough to buy those. If you are a starter or an amateur like me, then this are the lenses to buy. They have a great price, produce excellent pictures and you will start to understand about barrel distorsion, softness, etc. Very good lenses well constructed. Autofocus is a bit noisy on the 28/70 DG but nothing to worry about because it is pretty fast. On the 70/300 side, the macro capabilities are very good. My conclusion is, dont get mislead by people comparing these with Canon L lenses. If you have the money to spend around $1,500 on L lenses to get something similar, then go ahead and do it. If you want a good bundle with a good price that will do the job, then buy these. Remember than in digital photography there is nothing that could not be corrected by the right software like Photoshop. Keep in mind than even pros tweak there pics using that software. It is digital time! I used to take pictures using 35mm but now with DSLR-s, there is no going back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could not be happier with this Sigma Lense
I bought this lense for my new Canon 20D because I did not want to spend $1200 on the Canon equivalent and was not enthusiastic about walking around with the white "you must be a professional photographer" Canon lense. I could not be happier with its performance. I have used it indoors at volleyball tournaments and dance competitions (very low light), and outdoors at baseball games. I've even seen it on the official photographer's camera at some events! I did end up buying a monopod because it is not the lightest lense, but what wonderful pictures it has produced. Some have even commented that my photos are better than the professional ones offered at the event.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't be tempted by the low price
I made the mistake of trying to save money when I switched from Nikon to Canon.I bought this and Sigma's 17-35 f/2.8-4 DG EX while building my new system.I ended up selling my Sigma lenses to buy a Canon 17-40 f/4 L and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens.Sigma lenses are very tempting because they cost much less then Canon or Nikon lenses.Unfortunately they are cheaper for a reason. The images produced are much softer, the lens itself is not as sturdy, and it doesn't focus as fast.If you have to go bargain basement they are not that bad. They are really just expensive consumer lenses not cheap pro lenses. If you are trying to work as a professional you have to go with brand name lenses. They don't cost more just because of the name on the lens, there are major performance benefits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lens
I am a beginner in SLR photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunner of a lens
This is a stunner of a lens -- it is far superior to the Nikon 18-70 "kit" lens, and can be used as an ideal day-to-day walk-around lens. The lens produces sharp images with excellent glass quality. I have stopped using any other lens at this focal distance other than this. Like the Sigma 28-300, this lens seems to have a stronger following with Canon users than Nikon users. I can not recommend it more strongly. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Bargain alternative to Canon's 1.4x Teleconverter?
The Sigma APO teleconverter is a little more than half the price of the Canon teleconverter, and it boasts an APO element to reduce chromatic aberration.I've found this teleconverter to be reasonably sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting when I use it with my Canon 300mm f4.Sigma claims that the teleconverter is designed to be matched with their high-end tlelphoto lenses, and perhaps this is the case. However, I wasn't very satisfied with the performance of this teleconverter. ...
