Dew Indicator Light
After a year and a half the dew indicator has stopped the camera from working completely. When this first started happening I had to let the camera sit open for 2 hours, I missed some pretty important events for that reason. Now--even though it has been indoors in low humidity for a month the dew light is on and the camera won't work at all. I am very dissapointed as I shouldn't have to buy another camera in such a short time. I won't buy a sharp product again.

Avoid Sharp DigiCams!Production DISCONTINUED/DEW problems
I am appalled that others have experienced the horrible DEW problem with this camera.When the temperature and humidity changes, the digicam provides a warning and shuts down.This is outlined in the user manual, but I was very disappointed that the camera would shut down for days on end.We missed great moments of our toddler and family events because of this camera, which was a fairly expensive purchase.
Great when it works; but frustrating overall
I have had this camera for almost two years now...just after the one-year mark (when warranty expired!) it started having problems.Before then it was great.Small, nice LCD, strong zoom, easy to use, nice video.I never tried it for digital snapshots, though.

Great entry-level and value
Light and small to carry, easy to use with great features like 3 gramma setting(for brightness),optical and digital zoom, extra large and sharp screen (Sharp is very good at this all the time).
Broke down as soon as the warranty expired!
I really liked this camera because of the size and ability to take the pictures and videos in one.Now however I am very disappointed because after one year of use the camera broke down.The still button that takes snapshots stopped working.I can only take videos now and who knows how long that will last!I am sending this for service, hoping it won't cost me too much to fix it.Very upseting that it happened the moment one year warranty expired!

Awesome camera and awesome price!
I purchased this camcorder from ebay just in time for a trip to Florida 3 years ago. It worked wonderfully everywhere we went and it was great to be able to play back our adventures later at our room. I just had a baby and it has proven itself once again as a good quality and versatile camera. It is comfortable to use for longer periods of filming, since it has a large screen to look at instead of a viewfinder. It also has a high quality picture and I have "captured" many wonerful still pictures off the video I downloaded onto my computer. I would reccomend it to anyone looking for a high quality low cost camera!

Loved it until I could no longer watch what I taped
I too bought this camera because I was told that it was the top of the line and used my tax money to buy this for my girls. After a few months of ownership you could no longer watch what you taped.I have never dropped or damaged the camera in any way shape or form.So I took it back to the store that I bought it from and was told that I needed to send it to the manuefacturer to be looked at.Of course that was not free.I am a single mother and can not afford to just go out and buy another one or pay all the money that the company wants to fix it.I bought this camera because my oldest daughter is very athletic and does Bull Riding.Now I have a $300.00 camera that just sits around collecting dust that is of absolutely no use.It will record but you can not play it back. If you want to watch what you recorded you have to hit play and fast forward all at the same time.What I do not understand is why has the company not issued a recall on this particular product.I wonder has anyone ever thought about a lawsuit?If not then someone should.Because after reading so many reviews, there seems to be quite a lot just like my bad experience.

Decent camera when it works
Two weeks after I bought it the camera will not play back what I record. The only way I know it actually captured anything is that it will play back if you hit play and fast forward. Poor quality, poor service
I bought a sharp lcd tv from j& r in new york last Jan, after a year and half, when powering on the tv, sometimes works, sometimes not. after unplug in, wait for a while and plug back, worked for a couple months. Send it to service center to checkup, was told that the lcd control board needs to be replaced. when request to get back the replaced lcd control board, was told that sharp does not give back the replaced board, it has to be shipped back, otherwise, you have to pay additional fee to get back the replaced board.. it's rather strange to hear such a lousy policy from any vendor..
Won't buy from seller again
This T.V automatically shuts down after 5 "errors"..I got it from J&R Music and Computer (N.Y).. According to the service tech,this $3,600.00 T.V arrived broken. It has been in the repair shop longer than in my own home..........

I purchased my system a few months ago and I am very pleased with it.I love how there is a separate unit to house all the cables.I think it is a lot smarter to buy this model as opposed to the one with the HDTV tuner built in.This model is a lot cheaper and Comcast supplied me with a digital cable box with an HDTV tuner built in.I refuse to watch sports unless it is via HDTV.The clarity of this TV is very clean and crisp.I highly recommend it. ... Excuse me...
It would be foolish to rely upon the information of an incompetent user not knowing the difference between digital and analog technology. A "large red X" means you are trying to record on a protected tape! By the way, its in good conscience not conscious. Furthermore, how can anyone claim a product is the "lamest on the market" when electronic publications that TEST each product say otherwise. The Sharp VL-A10U is an outstanding camera and if you should have trouble operating it consult your manual before making false claims and assumptions.

Great family camcorder
I teach video productions and I've tried many camcorders. I like the Sharp's ability to rotate the body of the camera with my hand and still be able to get good shots at various angles without putting my wrist in traction. The drawbacks I've found are the lack of an external mic input (which isn't usually a requirement for most family videos) and a small button to control tape playback. This is a problem with us fat thumbed people. I would recommend buying an additional battery since there isn't an external charger available. Other than that, I think the camera has excellent video quality and a nice compact body yet still large enough for larger hands to operate without problem.

Good Camcorder
This is the first camcorder I've owned, though not the first I've used. I'm very happy with my purchase. I think it has excellent video quality, much better than others in a comparable price range. It does have a compact battery (for a reason), and hence a shorter recording time. I have recorded for over an hour straight with one battery. But you can purchase extra batteries if necessary (I bought one on ebay for $20). Great everything - EXCEPT video quality

The standard MiniDV format offers sparkling video resolution (just compare it to the "low-tech" VHS-C), and a powerful 26x optical zoom. Shame on you Sharp!
Shame on Sharp for putting out such trash.Bought this in August of 2001 and now have been out of a camcorder for a year (since 2004).Thought I would look up reviews to see if anyone else was having the same problem with "eject cassette" message.I found out by reading that this is a common problem with this camcorder and Sharp has been no help what so ever!Never will I buy their product again I hope you don't too.If there is a class action suit, please include me!DON"T BUY THIS SHARP PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!

The bad reviews hit all of the problems with this camera right on the head.THIS CAMCORDER IS A PIECE OF JUNK.Eject tape issue, pixelated audio and video...I've both of these problems every time I try and use it.Different tapes and head cleaning did NOTHING. DO NOT BUY!!!!

"Eject the Cassette" message, Sharp not very helpful...
I bought at the end of 2001, and I too have been getting these "eject the cassette" messages!I just didn't know how common this was until I started looking for a replacement camcorder just today, and happened to see mine (this one) and thought I would just check out the reviews, and was just SHOCKED to see how many others have had this same problem.I probably have used this camcorder a total of about 2 (yes, two) hours in the past 3-1/2 years, and have been getting the "eject the cassette" message for at least a year, I have to use a new tape each time I record, and cannot use the tape again (even to Play it), it tells me to "Eject the Cassette"--won't let me do ANYTHING.Sharp has not been helpful at all, continually referring me to 'my closest athorized servicer'.The closest place that will service it is in California, and I have to pay $55 just for them to 'assess' what the problem is.I have not found anyone in Arizona that can repair them, since they (an authorized Sharp servicer here) said when Sharp came out with these, they did not have a training program for repair shops to learn how to repair them. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMCORDER!!!Again, I am just shocked to read all these other reviews that sound IDENTICAL to the problems I have been experiencing practically since the camcorder was out of warranty, figures. ... Sharp VE-CG40U 4MP offers near-SLR versatility
This camera is causing my trusty 35mm SLR to stay in the closet.The Canon lens, identical to the one used on the Canon G2 and apparently the same in design and construction as 7-21mm f/2 zoom lenses used elsewhere under the names Carl Zeiss and Leica, is the best feature.There are plenty of exposure modes, including full manual; there's exposure bracketing and gamma bracketing, macro mode, etc.Image quality is quite good, and the regular "auto" mode handles most scenes well.The large maximum lens aperture makes this camera suitable for available-light use in most circumstances; that's good, because the built-in flash, like all built-in flashes, is best avoided except for fill with manual exposure.The bright, detailed color display is usable in daylight and very good in other conditions, and for people used to an SLR viewfinder, it's the only way to go--although those of us over age 40 will want to keep a pair of powerful reading glasses handy to see enough detail on the tiny screen. I still like the design, even with the problems....here's why:
I have been doing lots of amateur photography and occasionally have a need for all kinds of angles.The design of this camera allows you to set it on the floor and have a stable picture.That one quailty has endeared me to this model.Earlier models had the flaws of only being able to sense the remote control from front or back, and the battery did not recharge internally.This model allows remote control whether you are in front of or behind the camera for start/stop and adjusting wide/narrow focus.The only knocks I have on this camera are the lack of a light, for poor lighting, and durability (repair) issues.I have gone through two of these models, but will always try to own at least one, as long as I can find them...even though I also have other more advanced cameras with independent light sources and low maintenace/repair issues.

The camera has been in and out of sharp's authorized repair center, and has cost a total $100 to repair. It still does not work and we have to buy a new camcorder, it won't be a sharp. repair problems
I purchased this camera close to 2 years ago.I thought I was going to love it. Nice but???
I puchased the Sharp and found it easy to use but disapointing in low light and indoor situations with slow auto focus and color shifting. I finally replaced it with a Sony TRV66 which is quite a bit more expensivebut performs much better all round.

The Electronic Image Stabilization seems to only work welll whenyou are zoomed in on high-contrast shapes.That enables it to lock in andstabilize the image.Stabilization does not seem to work at all on generalscenes lacking these characteristics.Compared with my own Sony, the imagesensitivity does not seem as good, even in a normally lit room.Withoutbright lights on, the colors seem faded and without saturation. A good allaround Hi-8 unit for the price, but maybe not for a lot of inside use.
