5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Slide Scanner
This is an excellent slide scanner and does exactly what it is supposed to do very well.Yes, it is somewhat slow, but only in comparison to regular flatbed scanners.I have the slides scan at maximum resolution, but have the final image resized to about 20%.This keeps the file size manageable (about 5 MB per scan) and still provides an image that fills the screen. With the digital corrections on (which does make a huge difference on old family slides), and some minor post-processing, it has been taking about a minute per slide.

Slow but professional quality. Not simple.Huge learning curve.Scanning is an art and craft. You don't learn it overnight or even after many weeks. For the money, this is an outstanding choice.Remember, this is only good for slides and negative............not prints

1-0 out of 5 stars If the software is bad, it doesnt matter how good the hardware is
I am not a techie but I have installed enough hardware of all kinds to know what it involves. I am also pretty handy with Photoshop and photography.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware for computers freezing up
I have used the 5000 ED for the past week and my computer (running XP home edition) keeps freezing up after scanning 2 - 25 slides, forcing me to perform a cold reboot. I have sent a request to Nikon, but haven't heard a word. If only I could return this unreliable piece of hardware.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor scanner crippled by even worse software
This scanner is extremely slow, taking up to several minutes per negative.
3-0 out of 5 stars Expansive scanner with extermely poor and buggy software
One would expect that a company developing professional scanners would have the pride to develop software matching in quality. But you would be greatly disappointed to discover that this grand heavy hardware comes with poor software and therefore only amounts to a mediocre product not worth the money. The software (Nikon Scan) is buggy, leaky and crashes after about the second or third scan of a negative strip. I am running the latest version of Windows XP, with all the patches, and basically have to stop every thing else from running on my 320Ghz, 2GB new PC. This buys me just another single strip before it either freezes, forcing me to kill the application, or it silently crashes. I don't even want to go into the usability and documentation. Enough said. Extremely disappointing and not worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nikon's Medium Format Film Scanner--the 8000ED
If you have both 35mm and medium format transparencies and or negatives to bring into the digital age, I heartily recommend the Nikon Super Coolscan 8000ED.Firewire equipped, it is designed to work easily with the current line of graphics capable computers. Its bundled software has worked well for me (using a MAC with OSX and Firewire) and features three special capabilities.(1)Digital ICE3 will gently remove scratches and dust saving you hours of retouching (it doesn't work well with Kodachrome and black and white silver based emulsions).(2)ROC will restore colors to faded slides. It really works!(3) GEM gives you the ability to affect grain appearance. For the highest resolution imaging (4000DPI) the process takes some time. You also need to make sure that you have a fairly up to date computer. Some serious computing is going on here and with file sizes in the hundreds of Megabytes, you can't run this with your TRS-80.I run the Nikon Scan 3 software separately from PhotoShop 7 so that I can run one while working with the other.Otherwise while it's scanning, it will lock up your PS from use.It comes with a myriad of trays which work generally quite well but it cannot handle stack loaders. This is strictly a one strip at a time scanner. After all, these are some serious file sizes. While expensive, the 8000ED is approaching the quality of a drum scanner without the mess and the expense. For most work this is truly going to deliver. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I have been using the 4000 ED to capture/scan all of my old 35mm negatives (going all the way back the early 1970's).The pictures I am able to print from these scanned negatives are better that the prints made from the negatives!5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality at an affordable price
I use this to scan 35mm slides for digital prints up to 13x19" so I use the full 4000 ppi capability.I've found it to be easy to use and the final scanned quality to be excellent.Compared to the HP PhotoSmart scanner I was previously using, it's outstanding. The dust removal feature is awesome. The automatic color adjustment works well for some of my older, faded slides, but I wouldn't recommend it for general use.I use 2X averaging to improve noise, although it's probably not necessary. The scanner has other advanced image correction capability but I prefer to do this in PhotoShop where I have better control.Scanning speed at 4000 ppi is less than 1 minute. The final scans are definitely of publishable quality. This scanner has actually allowed me to delay my conversion to a digital SLR, although I'm sure I will eventually succumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner
This is the perfect scanner to scan, restore, and archive all of your most valuable pictures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great scanner
I've had this since it was first released and have found it to be a superb scanner.1-0 out of 5 stars Changed my opinion
Originally, I had very negative things to say about this product--namely problems with scanning chrome. Well, it took a couple of attempts over the past three years, but Nikon's support crew did a fantastic job once I convinced them of the problem, and they absorbed the entire cost of the repair (which was almost half the cost of the scanner). 5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to go for scanning negatives
The Coolscan IV is definitely worth the price for scanning negatives. I looked at flatbed scanners and cheaper film scanners previously, but in the end I bit the bullet and bought the Coolscan. I have no regrets about doing this. The resolution of the scanned negatives is amazing - I can see details that were not visible the original prints. What really makes the investment worthwhile is the Digital ICE technology, which "cleans up" dusty or imperfect negatives. I am in the process of converting my entire film library into digital images.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An asset for batch scanning
Although seemingly expensive, I found this unit extremely worthwhile. I originally bought it to use on my Super Coolscan LS-2000 (it is compatible with both the LS-2000 and 4000 ED and actually comes in the color of either scanner).Read more
