    Editorial Review

The advantages of digital voice recorders are numerous: superior sound, long recording times, and the convenience of built-in memory (much handier than hauling around several microcassettes). Enter the high-performance Olympus DS-2, which makes professional interviewing and dictation easy and efficient. With 64 MB of internal memory delivering up to 22 hours of total recording time in Long Play mode, the device is great for archiving long meetings or lectures, or for researching huge projects that require dozens of interviews. Users also have the choice of recording at several other speeds, including extreme high-quality modes that offer far less recording time (as little as one hour and five minutes) but much better audio resolution. The latter modes are more suitable for recording soft voices or when taking down complex song ideas--a process that's further assisted by the built-in stereo microphone designed to pick up all sides of a conversation with equal clarity.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More on Intel Mac compatibility
Actually, the DSS Player software that comes with this recorder does work on the new Intel Macs to transfer software from the recorder to the computer via a USB connector using the "Import File" command on the file menu.It translates to a wma file automatically, but won't do the translation to mp3 on any Mac as far as I can tell.I too have discovered EasyWMA, which works fine to do the wma to mp3 translation. There's also an application called Switch that works, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intel Mac Users Beware
The software that comes with the DS-2 (DSS Player) does not work on Intel Macs. They're working on a patch, but it's not expected to be out for a few months (it's late Sept 2006 now).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Clarity is Outstanding
And you don't even have to use the highest setting (Stereo HQ)

I ordered this camera just before taking a vacation to Hawaii. My primary goal was to take photos while snorkeling. I did so against the advice of several reviews I read here saying the quality of the underwater photos was poor. However, I strongly disagree. I've posted two sample photos here that demonstrate the quality that's possible with this camera underwater. I was completely satisfied. Here's why I ordered this...

1-0 out of 5 stars Olympus 720 SW underwater results
This review is based on a 17-day trip to Hawaii in June where I regularly used the 720 SW snorkeling, and covers only its underwater performance. The manual and website FAQs aren't much help on this, and without some careful practice you will probably be disappointed with this camera's underwater shots at first. My results were uneven despite experience with other underwater cameras.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stylus 710 offers great quality photos and very lightweight.
I was very excited when I bought this camera about 4 months ago.I bought it to carry with me in my pants pocket.I drive around a lot and love to stop and take interesting photos around South Florida....whether they are mailboxes, churches, buildings, or any other items that catch my eye.To say the least, its very easy to use, I've used it a lot....great quality photos can be printed either directly from the camera or my computer. The video recorder also works easy. One negative comment about the screen....very nice to view photos, but when taking photos in the sunlight, its very hard to see the subject. Be sure to buy a memory chip because the hard drive will fill up very fast, especially if taking HQ photos.I bought a 512 meg after market chip which will hold about 500 HQ photos.Another plus is the rechargeable battery and charger that come with the camera...very convenient and economical. The CD software that comes with it is kinda slow and antiquated....however the redeye removal works pretty good. The real downside to the software is when you want to back up your photos, it puts a gun to your head and won't do it because it insists that you buy the next version.I can't believe that Olympus did that....shame. Overall a neat little camera to have...lightweight, easy to use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great pictures
I bought this camera because of the small size and the weather proof.Mywife was asking for a smaller camera and we decided on the 710.Pictures are great in the daytime and outdoors and even in small indoor with flash.

3-0 out of 5 stars Awesome compactness, feature set and price, but flimsy
This camera is exceptionally compact.Place a credit card on top of it, and only a tiny area of the camera is visible around the edges.Incredible!
2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful camera - but it fritzed out within 3 days
I researched several cameras in this price range before buying the Olympus, and was extremely happy with it - until it ceased to function properly (a heavy gold tint to every picture, with horizontal bars across the image) after three days, just as I was beginning to shoot a 50th birthday party for my best friend.I don't feel comfortable buying another, asobviously I have a better chance of getting another lemon.I'll be getting a bulkier but hopefully more durable Canon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far
So when I bought this I noticed that there was no reviews on Amazon for it. I was looking for a small camera that was around 5 MP, had at least 3x optical zoom, and had rechargeable batteries. I was actually going to buy one of those Casio Exilims. But I noticed this camera in a Best Buy advertisement and it was about $50 cheaper than the cheapest Exilim. But like I said, there were no reviews so I was a little anxious about buying this. However, because I had my mind set on buying an Exilim, and this had all the same features it seemed but was so much cheaper, I decided that this was a steal and went with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I could have spent over $1000 for a camera with just as many features
But my wife would have killed me. For the past couple of years I started to get more into photography as a hobby. When a friend, who liked my photographs so much, asked me to photograph their wedding I decided I better invest in something more than just a little point and shoot camera. After doing much research between the Canon Rebel XT and the Olympus E500 I decided to purchase the Olympus and I can honestly say that I have not regretted it. Not only does the Olympus have advanced features that allow me to experiment with the look of my photos, it also has some functions that are familiar to point and shoot users so that someone like my wife can pick up the camera and not feel intimidated by it. The size and weight of the camera is not too big or heavy and the handle grip fits just right. That's more than I can say for the Rebel XT's small and somewhat cheap plastic feel. Yes there are better cameras out there but are well over the $1,000 mark, but it's great to go to a wedding, take pictures, and have people tell me that my photos came out just as good or better than the professional photographer that they hired.

5-0 out of 5 stars The little camera that could...
This is a great, great camera. It is well put together, takes great pictures, most imporantly, it has good balance, and feels great in your hands. It has that quality well-built feel, not that "plasticy" feeling that I got holding the Canon Rebel XT or the Nikon D50, that made me put them down and pick up their bigger "brothers" like the D200.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
The two lense package is an excellent value. This is a well built camera with a ton of features. The provided lenses are of good quality unlike the kit lenses with other cameras.I'm completey satisfied with the camera and creativity it inspires.Like all dslrs it's very easy to take a bad picture with this camera, but with a little practice the results are far better than point and shoots.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value, works perfectly
This is a great little device, bought for my wife's business. It records conversations between two people perfectly at its mid-quality and we are still on our first batteries even after considerable usage. Others have mentioned difficulty loading down to XP but it worked for us exactly as per the instructions (we have XP Home). The lowest quality was not good enough to hear clearly on play back but the capacity on its mid quality is plenty for this not to matter. HQ is very clear. I would thoroughly recommend it, especially at this price

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the device; 1 star for the software+driver
This is an excellent recorder. Very impressed with it. It's very sensitive and picks up anything at a distance. Sound quality is quite decent. We use it to record our baby's sounds.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and handy
I've been using this little gizmo to record lectures for a while and I'm quite happy about it. It seems that the olympus voice recorders are becoming a standard: most of my classmates who record the lectures in class have one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital camera
After much research and consideration, I decided to purchase this fine little camera. This is my first digital camera and it was an excellent choice.I seriously considered getting a Canon Powershot but was a little apprehensive due to their recent problems with the dreaded e18 error messages.Granted, this Olympus camera is a new model so not much is known about potential risks, but I was willing to take a gamble and purchase it.Plus, with an excellent price point, I felt confident about my decision.

this is a nice camera from olympus ,the big lcd is plus .It's small enough to fit in your pocket and fits comfortably in my hands. The image quality is good ,however the guide setting is very useful and pictures come out pretty clean, sharp and focused. The other settings results in soft images and the dis mode(digital image stabalization)results are noisy but stil usefull upto 4x6 prints. The battery life is mediocore, since it uses aa batteries,i recommend rechargeable they last long. For its low price ,large lcd,and good image quality ,i would recommend this camera to anybody. In the end its a good buy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Slow Hands
I'm a journalist and this device has been an absolute lifesaver. In interviews, meetings, or simple voice dictation, the DM-10 is just slightly heavier (a definite plus) that Olympus's other "sleeker" models, but is certainly small enough to carry around in your front pocket. I've had mine for over two years, and it's used everyday, has been dropped on several occasions, and has never failed me. TheDSS Player software works on Mac, and is slightly awkward, but has never hindered the overall performance. I keep all important interviews and recordings on a backup hard drive, which is far more convenient and less space consuming than mini tapes.
    4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for preventing a student's writer's cramp
I bought this little recorder because I was getting writer's cramp taking notes for four classes. It easily holds a day's worth of lectures without a problem and picks up every word that's said, though some of the comments from the audience get lost. The microphone is quite sensitive; I accidently turned it on when I shoved it in my pocket, and it still picked up every single word. Amazing! It's quite durable and very easy to use; I download lectures to my computer every night, and there they are when I need to review.
4-0 out of 5 stars Olympus DM-10 Digital Voice Recorder
I used this recorder to record rehearsal sessions for a chorus I am in.Previously, I had used a much less expensive tape recorder, and this is so much better. There really is no comparison. There is no way to turn it off (I think), so you will have to replace the batteries after a month or so.I do recommend the Olympus DM-10. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Silver Casing Defective
There is a manufactoring defect with the casing on this camera... the silver material is very breakable. After a couple months of owning this item the battery comparement latch broke off so now I have to hold it closed. The same exact thing happened to me with a similarly designed earlier model (Stylus 300). The design structure of this series is very poor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera, large screen, rechargeable battery
I liked the size and features of this camera. I especially liked the fact that the battery is rechargeable, as we have had other cameras that quickly go through AA batteries. This camera has a large screen, is user friendly, and fairly sturdy.A cover conceals and protects the cable ports.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
This is my second digital camera. I started with an HP 318 - anice starter camera. When I decided to step up I did not research well enough. I get some very good shots with the 600, but the lack of a viewfinder on a sunny day is an insurmountable problem. It is worse than shooting blind because all you see in the viewfinder is your own reflection. As a side note, Olympus tech support was totally unsympathetic and suggested I try to find a 3rd party clip on shading device for the unit. I could not find one.

4-0 out of 5 stars impulse buy
I bought this camera on impulse one day - it was a display model on sale for a great price.I own a Nikon D50 with lots of accessories, but I wanted something easier to carry - to have in my truck at all times just in case..
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CAMERA
I bought this camera after owning two other olympus cameras that were great. This camera is much better than I had expected, better zoom, many more settings for pretty much all situations. It took me some time to get the settings down, but now I am taking awesome pics and I especially apreciate the 10x zoom. I would recomend this to anybody. When I read the negative reviews on this camera I was very worried that it would be a bust, but the pictures and the settings make it all worth while and I have had nothing but fun with this camera. On another point, the software that comes with this camera is incredible, it allows you to change cropping, red eye and pretty much anything else it is very helpful and makes it very easy to do so...buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed - except for zoom
Before this camera I had an Olympus C-3020, and i have to say that camera took sharper pics than this one does.I send photos to a stock photography website and they have not accepted any pictures I have taken with this camera due to the sharpness just not being there. The zoom is awesome though, so I am planning on keeping the camera for concert pics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Camera
Got it yesterday. In green. Actually it's a shiney yellowish-green. Nice feel. Fits well in shirt pocket. Very light; particullarly compared to my Pentax Optio 550. Good, nice size LCD. Easy to use yet with nice availability of choices for customization. Well written manual (you can find online thru google) and onboard help menu. Photos come out fairly nice. Tried indoors in low light with several scene settings, outdoors, macro, and supermacro. Colors look true, fairly sharp without noticable artifact. Used in South Florida morning daylight outside without any trouble with LCD viewing (camera has no classic viewfinder). Have read reviews of washout in bright sun: have not tried that yet. Overall, I'm happy with the camera thus far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Olympus has NO quality control!!!!
I bought this Olympus recorder at a local electronics store (circuit city) and had to return the first one, since the record/playback head had a problem staying in physical contact with the tape. The playback volume would drop down in volume since the head was not snug against the tape during playback conditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what I want it to!That's all that matters!
I am a musician, and I own an eight track digital recorder for completed musical ideas, but sometimes i wake up at night with a vocal or lyrical idea that i just don't want to forget.I can keep this handy little recorder by my bed, that way i won't forget my great ideas. This product does what i want it to do, it helps me get my ideas out so that I don't forget them the next day.I heard that the idea for the opening riff for "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones was recorded as Keith Richards awoke with an idea in his head.It has been said that all that could be heard on the rest of the tape is Keith snoring! lol!! this may not be that very recorder, but it'll do fine by me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bargain even if 'old' technology!
If you are a student and just need a cheap, good quality recorder for classes- like I did- this is a real gem. Its just a plain old fashioned tape recorder- but compared to digital, the sound of this recording is excellent. For techno-freaks, be aware: It doesn't hook up to your computer to translate from recorder to printed notes via voice recognition software, it isn't the size of a pen (although it IS pretty small and lightweight), and it won't stand up on your desk and tap dance. It'll just make recording your lectures a cheap and easy proposition. As an aside: you will need a little adaptor ($2 on Olympus website)in order to use standard headphones with it (it has a mini-mini plug port, which is not standard) or else you will have to listen to it out loud.At this price, I think its worth grabbing these up while they last and while Olympus hasn't discontinued them yet (assuming that digital will eventually cause them to discontinue all 'tape recording' machines). So, even though I like computer stuff and have lots of gadgets and gizmos myself, I ignored 'image' and was very happy with this inexpensive little purchase!Footnote: I would have given it 5 stars IF it had a tape counter (this model doesn't) and IF it included the adaptor for standard headphone plug OR had a standard size port so you wouldn't need their own brand headset or adaptor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another rave
The previous reviews are quite accurate regarding pros and cons.I've had my 320 for about two weeks and I'm very impressed.I'm a convert to digital photography from 35 mm (Canon Pellix) going back 40 years. My first digital was an HP Photosmart which I had for three years and was very pleased with. For the price, the 320 offers incredible value and a nice blend between automatic presets (primarily in the Scenes mode, but also in the basic Auto setup) and various manual options.Ergonomically it's superb; the designers deserve some kind of major award. If the quality control holds up over time, I'll continued to be puzzled as to why Canon and Sony digitals seem so popular, unless it's lemming psychology.I do think the printed manual is far too skimpy, and the computer version, while it's comprehensive, could be more user-friendly.Battery life is short but I got used to rechargable batteries with the HP and they are the answer.
5-0 out of 5 stars You need to get this camera right away!!
This was my first camera and looking for it wasn't easy.I had went to a store and looked at some cameras.Every camera I asked him about said would be a waist of time!He said that a good camera for anyone is this one.He was right every thing about it's great all the pictures turn out perfect great sound quality and more! The only thing about this camera is that it dosen't have good battery life but you just have to get a battery charger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable features for the price.
I'm no expert in digital photography (I'm still most comfortable using my old Nikon F2), but after doing a bit of research on lower-end digital cameras, I decided to take a chance on this one.Because it was released only in the spring of this year, there are virtually no professional reviews and only a handful (albeit very positive, like the ones here) of user reviews. However, this camera is simply unbeatable on paper - I'm amazed that there are so many features crammed in.

5-0 out of 5 stars 8MP's in my pocket
What can I say? This is the third Olympus camera I have owned.I don't think I will ever buy another brand. The SP-350 packs a whopping 8 megapixels into a tiny case that fits easily in pants pockets. The large LCD display produces sharp previews that can be zoomed and panned.I can't say enough about the image quality of the photos. There are plenty of settings for tweaking to get the right results almost every time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Olympus Advancement
This makes my fourth digital camera from Olympus. With each new camera the quality gets better and the price, lower. This camera has many wonderful features and is a joy to handle. The picture quality is excellent. Like most new technology items, Apple products aside, learning the menus and such may be a bit intimidating for the newbies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and Performance in a little black box.
Huge LCD and DC power make this a great camera for professional use. As an Ebay seller my photos are my lifeblood, and this camera treats me very well. Good price and great pictures. ... Read more
