Very nice unit
I have used several types of night vision, 3rd generation that is, but as many of us can see, 3rd generation aint cheap. I went with this particular n/v because of price, and a fellow Deputy friend of mine owns one, and said he liked his. I have only one complaint the weight, it's a little heavy, but well built. Turn on the I/R, and wham it's like turning on a spot light, nice unit, works well, and if your interested in a great little night vision unit, you can't go wrong, quality product great price. Not useful due to very small field of vision
The field of vision is too small for any useful viewing.If you already know where your object is in the dark, then you can point this device towards the object and view it in dark.But if you are searching for an object in the dark, the small field of vision makes the search useless.

nice scope, feels hefty and appears to be well made. glass optics good light gathering abilities.large objective lense with nice metal screw on lense protector. Only drawback I found was the battery compartment was tiny and kind of hard to screw the battery cap on.

This thing delivers exactly what it promises: it enables one to see in darkness! Within a city you will hardly find a spot dark enough to fully appreciate the scope, but in the country side at night this thing is incredible. The built-in infrared light source allows one to see in pitch black. The image is monochrome (greenish) and is distorted towards the edges, sort of like if you are looking through a bubble. Even so, the effective viewing angle is wide enough for comfortable viewing. Also, I was quite impressed with quality of the optics: if you adjust the eye-piece to your eye, the focus ring allows to get a very sharp image from just a few feet to infinity! I found a minor defect, however: The battery lid appeared to not provide a good contact to the battery, so I had to tweak the lid slightly for the power to come on. A good house or backyard Toy
I bought this with the hope of using it for wildlife observations while out in the field. I had previous experience with night vision and hoped for a clear view of the surrounding meadows, forests, etc. Not so with this one. I could not see any better than using my own eyes. It works when there is still some light or moonlight but, I can see fine on my own then. I returned it after one use. Read more

Not Bad
Not bad, you can use it as hunting gadget, or if you are on a searching crew this will come in handy. Slip it into your eyes and your sight will increase greatly. Not bad for the price although it could be better. If you are an expert in hunting, or your out looking for something this is not the best option, but one of the bests. If you just like to go around able to see on dark this is more than enough. Hope you found this helpfull.

A bit older model, not latest generation, but still ok.
This is an older, Russian-Made version of the US Military version. It is higher quality first generation night vision, but lacks the clarity of the new 2nd and 3rd generation units, but for it's price, is NOT a bad deal at all. For 3rd generation, be prepared to fork out 10 times this price.

Very Effective Nightvision. Two thumbs up!!
I just received and used this Night Owl nightvision model "NOCX3".This product worked GREAT.I had 3/4 of a moon.Location was a wooded lake area 1:30am.I could see clearly at least 300 ft away.Standard green monochrome view.I messed with the IR a little but really didn't need it.The IR was just like turning on a mag light,effective 100 ft.I was able to turn on the unit and shut off a minute later for approx 20 minutes of sustained usage.Saves battery juice.Limitation,field of view was like looking through a paper towel roll.Small,but you could see everything.This is a great low cost Russian nightvision product.--ks.

Nice product
I had to return mine since it had a big splotch in the phosphor screen that was distracting. Amazon couldn't replace it as they had run out of stock. From the little use I put it through, it worked well. I use an IR-scope at work that cost close to a $1000, but this Russian beauty is comparable to that in quality costing only a fraction of that.

Night Owl Explorer 3.1
I found the Night Owl Explorer 3.1 to be ok, thats all. The price isn't bad for what you get and it's very hard to pick out a "good" night vision unit in this price range. The one thing I don't like about it is it needs the IR light on it to work if it's completly dark out, which is ok, but the IR light is so bright that someone could spot you sitting in the dark because of it. It has a 1/2" diameter red light on top of the unit which at night is very bright if there is nothing else out there. This would not be a good unit for surveillance work. The unit only has a 15,000 light gain in it, some have up to 35,000 and would most likely be a better choice, if the claim is true. All in all it's ok for just screwing around with though. I also got the 5X lens adapt. for it, it works pretty good but does rob even more light. If you want a real good unit get one with a 2nd or even 3rd gen. tube, they are much better than any of these 1st gen. cheapies..... ... Read more

Lets clarify the mistery
When I attempted to research this product, I could not find any information concerning the adapter measurements, even from the manufacture's website. The only information that I could find was that this adapter could hook up to a 35mm camera using a t-ring adapter. Well I have a Sony mini-DV camcorder and a Sony Cybershot digital camera as well as a Night Owl night vision monocular. The connections are pretty simple, first you need to purchase step rings to fit this adapter to your camera or camcorder. The misterious, well kept secret, size of the step ring needed to attach to this adapter is a female thread 42mm step ring. The step-ring will screw on to the male end of this adapter. From there you can step down or step up to fit the lens on your camera. The other end of this adapter screws into the removable eye piece on the night vision monocular. To adapt from this adapter to my Sony Mini-DV camcorder I had to step down using a 1- 42mm (Female thread) to 37mm (Male thread)stepring, and 1- 37mm (female thread) to 25mm (Male thread) to adapt to the 25mm lens (female thread) on my camcorder. I used a total of 2 steprings to fit this adapter to my camcorder. I hope this has helped someone because I spent countless hours trying to find the information that I just described. Lens Doublerorder form is misleading
The product did not fit the Night Owl Night Vision I purchased as advertised. The special offer lens form that come with the packaging(Doubler)is misleading. The lens doubler will not fit all Night Owl Optics Night Vision. When I detached the original lens, I could no screw the doubler on. The lens was to big for the model I purchased. The lens fits other models -attachs to the front of the original lens. The special offer form should only be put in the model packaging that will fit the lens.
buyer beware
if you own an nolt3 the lens doubler will not fit your unit as night owl optics says it will,,thought my unit had the wrong size lens on it and after talking with night owl they said it was their mistake and they should not show the lens double compatable with the nolt3,,,so just be ware it will not fit this unit.

Does magnify a little, reduces brightness a little.
I'm not so sure about "doubling". Yes, it does increase magnification a little, and dims the display a little.It's not very spectacular, it depends on your needs at the moment.If you really need to zoom in a little more, and it isn't so dark that you can afford the slightly dimmer output, that may be what you need.Also, it is heavy, and adds both weight and size to the front of the Night Owl unit.With the lens doubler attached, the Night Owl will not fit in its storage pouch. It screws on with fine threads, be careful! Attaching/removing the doubler is not fast, not something you will want to do constantly.There is not storage pouch included with the doubler. ... Fine Entry Level Scope
Solid feeling unit. Battery compartment could be designed better. Buttons for power and IR are mounted in a silly spot, so using them takes two hands. Use of double AAs makes a lot of sense and they seem to last. disappointed
I bought this for my husband. We waited until dark and then tried it out. He stood outside about 10 feet from me and I looked at him through the scope. I could make out a bright figure in his shape but could not see any features. Peripheral objects had slightly better clarity. I'll wait until the technology gets better for the home consumer and buy again. This one is going back.

By far the best night vision buy under 500 bucks...
I've checked out various night vision brands out there, and for my moneynone of them come close to these Night Owl binoculars. Not only do theylook good. They work great. Fact is, as soon as you grab the rubberizedbarrels, you notice how good they feel in your hands. And then you take'emout at night. And lo and behold, it's like you've just discovered a wholenew world out there - the nocturnal world. So, what do I particularly likeabout these? I like the fact that they have these really wide lenses. Youget a really nice, wide field of view in these. I've checked out otherbrands, but unless you're willing to shell out a couple of grand-at least,you won't get nearly the quality as these. Oh, did I mention the mirroredlenses?
