    3-0 out of 5 stars When it's good, it's very good...when it's bad, It's pretty bad
I did a lot of research before choosing the Meade CaptureView 8x42 2MP Digital Camera Binocular. This one offers the most for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the one reason you're probably looking to buy it will be nothing at all like what you were expecting.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad pictures, bulky to use.
The main reason for buying this camera is to be able to take good pictures from far away. The quality is very poor. The unit is very bulky to carry around your neck. The SD card slot has some block in it. I was not able to even insert an SD card. All in all, not satisfied at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
The binocs are really nice and sharp, but you can purchase just as good for less.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was worth the price, but don't expect ccd performance
Having read the reviews of others prior to purchasing my electronic eyepiece, I did not expect too much from it.But for the price I paid, I would buy it again. My main dislike is the apparent focal length. It is the equivalent of about a 4mm lens.I live in a major metropolitan area with lots of haze and light pollution, a 4mm optical lens is of questionable value. The electronics makes it worst.I can see earth's moon pretty well, but only the brightest two of Jupiter's four visible moons.Forget about seeing dim stars or deep space objects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product with alot of potential
I bought this product on sale for $39.00 at a local camera store after reading the reviews on this page. This was after I also bought an Orion Electronic eyepiece the week before. One thing that makes this eyepiece infinetly better than the Orion eyepiece is the fact that it is threaded for filters (or stacking of multiple filters) whereas the Orion eyepiece is not. Using it on my 6" reflector, I first tried it with a white light solar filter. The view was crisp as I expected on both the Meade and the Orion eyepiece. The Meade eyepiece is alittle larger than the Orion eyepiece (4mm vs. Orion's 3.8mm) but it is not really too noticeable. Viewing the moon at gibbous phase and the contrast tweaked, the view was also crisp and defined in both eyepieces. I finally tried it on Jupiter. Here is where the difference between the Orion eyepiece and the Meade eyepiece was most pronounced. Because the Orion eyepiece is not threaded, Jupiter came out completely whitewashed, even when the contrast was completely tweaked. Because the Meade eyepiece is able to be used with a filter, I placed a Baader's Planetary Contrast Booster on it. The 2 cloud belts at the equator were visible on my 20" TV as a monitor. Also visible were the 4 moons at the same setting. When used with a video card tied in to a pc, a person can frame-grab and have their own "poor man's" version of a CCD picture. Using this method, suprisingly good pictures that rival much higher priced CCD's may be achieved. This eyepiece in my opinion is well worth the price (even if you don't get it on sale) and has alot of potential when used with a video card. Just remeber to buy some extension cords and adapters for the RCA cables.

5-0 out of 5 stars great addition to any telescope
This eyepiece is quite nice. I tried it out and was amazed at the results. I use it on a six inch reflecting telescope. I used it first on the best target in the night sky, the Moon. It looked as though I was looking through a window on an apollo capsule orbiting the moon. I am not kidding. It was great. I then moved over to Saturn. I could clearly see the rings and bands of clouds. This item is worth the cost! ... Read more

The Meade ETX90EC is a compact telescope with excellent optics, packaged with a sturdy tripod and the remarkable Autostar computer control. Even though I own several telescopes and belong to an Astronomy club, the first night I took out the ETX, it showed me objects I'd never seen before. The ETX90EC is the computerized version of an affordable Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope first introduced by Meade in 1996. Every reviewer since then has commented on the excellent optics. How excellent? When I presented a session on optical testing at my local Astronomy club, I brought my ETX90 so that everyone could see what a "textbook" star test actually looks like. Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars!
Okay, I know nothing about telescopes. But my husband and I bought this last summer because he thought it'd be fun to star gaze. When we did, it was truly one of the most wonderful experience ever! It allows you to observe celestial objects in brilliant resolution. It wasn't complicated and simple to use. But you do have to read the manual.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meade Does It Right
The Meade ETX90EC lives up to its billing. It's a high-quality piece of gear that exudes craft and workmanship. The bundled package w/Autostar and Tripod gives you most of what you need.If you have any intent of doing terrestrial viewing, you should consider the 45 degree erecting prism. Also, the package does not come with any power adapters. If you plan to be out for a long evening of star gazing, you will probably want the adapter that lets you plug into a cigarette lighter.I wish Amazon had the UHTC version available, but no luck. Finally, I haven't been able to find the correct T-mount adapter for this scope on Amazon.I do want to use it for photography eventually. The main thing I would say is that this is not a toy, but it is ideal for beginners to intermediate enthusiasts.I've had more fun in just a couple sessions than I've ever had before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Meade
This was my husband's big present for Christmas, something he has always wanted. While unwrapping and unpacking, he heard a rattle in the spotting scope.Upon investigation, he fished out a broken set screw and discovered that it had sheared off the outside of the spotting scope.Another screw was badly damaged. The eyepiece covers had all been left off when shipping. Also, all the settings were loose and had to be reset.Meade does not have an 800 number and you are put on hold interminably when you try to contact them. All in all, he likes the scope BUT was very disappointed in the quality of the manufacturer and lack of customer service. What a disappointment for Christams day! ... The Meade Polaris NGC-60AM telescope, which hails from Meade's Next Generation series, incorporates an advanced industrial design and high-quality instruments, making it a perfect fit for budding backyard astronomers and serious hobbyists. The scope's large, precision-bearing surfaces yield smooth manual motions as you track an object, while the ultra-modern appearance adds a cutting-edge touch to your sunroom or patio. The scope also offers a computer controller that directs you how to move the optical tube to best view more than 1,400 celestial objects. The computer display is great for viewing the major planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae that otherwise might be difficult to locate, instead helping you center them directly in the lens's field of view. Plus, the NGC-60AM makes a nice choice for such terrestrial tasks as bird watching, nature gazing, or neighborhood surveying. Read more

    Editorial Review

Explore the wonders of the universe from your backyard--or just check out the activity down the street--with the Meade Polaris 60EQ-A 60mm diameter refractor telescope. Ideal for budding astronomers and beginning stargazers, the telescope features an easy-to-use design that sets up in seconds, so you can start peering at stars, planets, and distant galaxies almost immediately. Meade's high-quality optical design starts with a 60mm diameter objective lens, coated for pinpoint sharpness, and two 1.25-inch eyepieces (one MH9mm and one MA25mm) to ensure a wide field of view. The focal length of 900 mm (with an f/15 ratio), meanwhile, isn't as powerful as many high-end telescopes, but still keeps celestial objects looking razor sharp. All of this on a fully adjustable aluminum tripod (with an accessory tray) that ensures a stable viewing platform with minimal vibration--the bane of telescopes everywhere. The scope's equatorial mount is particularly appealing, as its deluxe slow motion controls help users keep fast-moving objects centered in the field of view during extended observations. Other details include a 5x24mm viewfinder and a 2x Barlow lens with a 1.25-inch diagonal mirror.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere...
Bought this scope on a whim as astronomy and the study of the stars has always been of interest to me since I was a kid. Set up was relatively easy, but once I looked through it...oh the disappointment. I was able to set up the viewfinder, but mount failed to keep objects within the finders field of view. And once you get something in the scope, the vibration and poor mount make it impossible to even focus without causing the scope to go into an irritating bout of shaking. I tried it for 4-5 nights in a row, and returned it. I went out and bought a cheap 10X50 set of binoculars and they work as well, without headache of this scope.

4-0 out of 5 stars skeptical
Needed a birthday gift fast, so didn't read other reviews until after I ordered. Was unsure if I made a good choice, but ended up being very happy. Delivery was right on time, no problems with assembly and easy to use. I know it is not the most powerful or precise telescope on the market, but definetly a good product for the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
To be fair, I have never used a telescope before.I have, however, assembled many products using instruction manuals.I found this manual difficult to follow. It lists the assembly instructions in two different areas of the manual and each set of instructions were slightly different from each other.I had the same problem with the alignment instructions. The remote control is impossible to read while it scrolls.I couldn't tell you if the telescope is aligned properly, but we could not see anything with it.We managed to manually find a bright star through the viewfinder, but it looked much better to the naked eye than through the scope. We are very frustrated with this product and will probably return it.

1-0 out of 5 stars May be the Moon
No stars or other celestial stuff will be shown by the thing .... use it for the Moon, and forget the rest. If you really want to see stars, spend much more bucks. This will be great for my kids' kids. ... Read more

Get a better view whether traveling through a wildlife preserve, watching your favorite baseball team, or just surveying the neighborhood with these compact Meade DCS binoculars. Boasting a power of 7x and an 18mm objective lens design, the lightweight binoculars (they weigh only 4.1 ounces) are terrific for daytime viewing, though the small lens diameter makes them somewhat less useful when the lighting is poor. The binoculars also feature fully coated single-layer optics for clear viewing and a comfortable 10.5 mm of eye relief. More importantly, the field of view stands at 488 feet at a distance of 1,000 yards, with a near focusing distance of 15 feet. As a result, all but the most distant objects look crisp and vivid.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
Watch out! These are made in China and mine had an inherent defect. The barrels are so misaligned that the combined image is a double. This can't be easily fixed, and Meade charges $20 for warranty repairs.Very disappointing that Meade would sell such trash. As an astronomer I have spent $$$ on Meade scopes, but will give serious consideration to Celestron now.
2-0 out of 5 stars Over priced clearance item! $79?! Not even worth $15!
I bought this one because it's light weight (4.1 oz.). I was looking for a small binoculars for my 4-year-old son. With the original price almost $80, "It must be good!" I thought! I paid $15 during Friday Sale. I thought I got bargain until I received it today with huge disappointment. It's hard to focus by adjust each eye, hard to see clear with tiny small lenses. I felt tense after using it for a while, don't even mention my young son will know how to use it! My daughter has a Canon 8x23A, which is in very good quality and easy for kids to use. After doing some search, I found Meade outlet is selling this Meade DCS 7x18 on eBay for $7.95 with free shipping due to this item is a closeout! 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
Binoculars are excellent for beginners to amateur astronomy - they cost less than telescopes and they give you a great deal of freedom to scan the sky. I bought these for this reason and I've been very happy with them. The magnification is low enough that holding them in your hands doesn't produce too much jitter, but it's high enough to bring out celestial objects you wouldn't see unaided. I've seen galaxies, double stars, and Jupiter's moons with these.

The Meade Series 4000 Super Plssls are an improvment over the 3000 series Plssls. The 9.7mm is used for high power observing on most telescopes. I had one with an ETX-60AT that glitched during the setup and would not progress pass the DAYLIGHT SAVINGS? question. When I called Meade they pretty much told me that it was a "known problem" and that I was out of luck because the unit was out of warranty..

For almost as long as amateur astronomy has been in existence as a field of study, refracting telescopes of 60-millimeter (2.4 inches) aperture and larger, and reflecting telescopes of about 114 millimeters (4.5 inches) and larger, have been considered ideal telescopes for the serious beginning or intermediate observer. But never in their long history have microprocessor technology and the latest in electromechanical design been applied to telescopes of this class. Meade Digital Electronic Series (DS) telescopes are one of the most important advances in beginning to intermediate telescopes in 100 years.Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars A great beginner's telescope
I have purchased the Meade DS-60 for my son.I am very impressed with the quality of the product after comparing it to similarly priced telescopes available for purchase from local retail outlets in Australia. The mounting is of a significantly superior quality than those of its competitors in this price range and this is important for the novice astronomer to gain some real enjoyment from their hobby. The instructions packaged with the product could be improved by rewriting them with a younger user in mind.I highly recommend "The Starry Night" software which comes packaged with the telescope.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor support
I purchased a DS-60 for my son and have been trying to locate the accessories necessary to get it to perform with a motor since December.I have been unable to purchase the #493 series kit (not specified on the box as a necessary component)either online or at any stores. There is no online customer support and the information provided by the manufacturer was incorrect. The accessories for the telescope are not readily available.I am very dissatisfied with this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Plastic Parts
The lenses to this scope seem to be pretty good quality, but there are a number of problems which make it less attractive. Several threaded parts are made of plastic, and at least on mine, which had apparently been opened before, they were all stripped. Manual controls are ok, but the horizontal controls are hard to operate. When you stop turning, the scope continues to move about 1-2 degrees, unless you turn the knob back the other way. Spend the extra money and get a good telescope! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift
I was supposed to being using these binoculars myself, but my sister needed a pair to give as a Christmas gift. She jumped at the price and wrapped the gift up as fast as she could. These binoculars are great for games and anything else you want to use them for. The price is really great. I wish I had ordered more!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Meade Mirage 7x35
Ok folks, If your looking for optics that will blow your socks off... look elsewhere. I bought the Mirage 7x35's for my #1 sons 13th birthday, and I feel they are up to their cost/value, plus a notch or two. You dont get BAK4-multi coated, super duper anything, nor should you at this price. If you are in the market for binoculars at a low-low price, theses will fill the bill. If you are looking to do some binocular astronomy, low light stuff, or are critical about optical quality, save up for the higher end stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have Telescope for people new to astromony
I've had my telescope for over six months and wouldn't trade it for anything. This is a great telescope and it is very crispt in the viewing of stars and planets. I love it and for the money it can't be beat. If you are new to astronomy you need this scope. I saw Saturn a few nights ago and saw the rings very clearly. I brought a dew shield and two more eyepieces for it and they helped make the scope even more fantastic. I got a 18 mm wide and 13.3 mm super wide Meade eyepieces. You will also need autostar for a tour of all that is in the sky at night. You can see 14,ooo objects and hundreds more if you download them from the internet with an adapter which cost a few extra dollars more. I bought a deluxe field Meade tripod. You need this one because it keeps the image that you are looking at stable. This is the best telescope you can buy for the money and the best type too. I love my ETX-90 EC and plan on keeping it for the rest of my days of viewing the universe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for $122 from Meade... on eBay
Hello!Thinking of the Meade DS 114, 4.5" reflector? It's a very good starter telescope, provided you get 1.25" eyepieces and not 0.985" eyepieces, and a 30mm finder and not a 24mm finder.4-0 out of 5 stars Best First Telescope
It's a great price. It gives clear views and the objects are very detailed when looking through a high magnification eyepiece.3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a starter scope
I bought this for my daughter who wanted a telescope. I have had a few over the years and know my way around a telescope and the night sky. Over all I like the scope, especially at the price. It could use better eye pieces and a the finder scope that comes with it is a pain. I plan on buying more eyepieces and replacing thefinder. ... Read more
