Decent, but not outstanding
Well, I bought this lens for use with my Canon Digital Rebel XT, and I like the fact that it has a relatively large aperture and has focal lengths from 28-210mm.However, the lens had many particles of what appeared to be dust inside of the lens as soon as I took it out of the box.Basically the only way to clean it would be to take apart the lens.It's so bad that it shows up on the pictures that I take.Vivitar tells me that I can ship the lens back to them and they will try to replace it, so I guess we'll see what happens.Oh yeah, I was kinda pissed when I bought the lens for $230 at this very site like three weeks ago and now it is selling for $121.I seriously think that I was the first person to buy one of those lenses in a long time; I mean, the lens's box was covered in dust when I opened the package.Anyways, I guess it will work, but it's not exactly the top of the line.Oh yeah, for those of you who have a silver Digital Rebel XT, this lens in a silver color does not match exactly.The lens's color is more of a champaign tint while the camera is actually silver. ... love it
As a photography student I fell in love with this lens the moment that I got it.It has a good zoom without being heavy and doesn't make me feel like a tabloid reporter.The range is perfect for day to day use because it allows you to get close as well as shoot from clear across the street.28 is a decent wide angle and the 300 is fabulous. A purchase that I would make again.The greatest part about this is that you aren't forced to change your lens over and over to capture different kinds of shots.You can leave the standard lens at home.The camera of fashion photographers, Nikon delivers on quality as always.The lens also adapts to all Nikon models.A good buy if not one of the best that I have ever made for my camera. Vivitar 28-300 for Nikon is very good for me.
I have a Nikon camera F-60 with Vivitar28-300 Series one zoom lens and BOWER UV coated filter since 12/1999. " They" always give the SHARP pictures for us ( myself and my community ). I'm the main photographer for my Vietnamese community. And my people has been satisfied with the photographs from my Nikon F-60 + Vivitar lense 28-300 andBOWERUVCOATEDFILTER.
Vivitar 28-300 lens for Nikon AF
We own this lens for several years using it on Nikon F70. I was very disappointed with the over-all quality (esp. sharpness) of the lens. Tamron 28-200 lens is supposed to be also on the "lower" end of the quality scale - I tried it once and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE compared to the 28-300. In other word: even the much critized Tamron 28-200 is better. Very likely a 28-300 even with reasonable compromise would unreasonably stretch the budget and perhaps the OEM of Vivitar (Vivitar does not have his lens factory) did the best they could for that money. I am curious, how good or bad is the 28-300 offering from Tamron. The Vivitar Series 1 IMHO does not deserve the "Series 1" name. I am affraid, in order to cover a long range with better quality one would still need 2 or even 3 lens.

Bargain Lens
Needed an inexpensive wide angle zoom, this fit the bill. I trust Vivitar products and this one hasn't let me down yet. Takes 77mm filters. Note: This lens is a true ultra-wide angle lens, and as such image quality will suffer if used with standard, inexpensive filters. When using filters, spend the extra money and get one of the ultra-thin models from Hoya or similar. Otherwise you will notice rounding at the corners on shots taken at 19mm caused by the overhang of the filters getting the way of the shot (called "vignetting"). Makes a neat effect if intentional, but can mess up your shot if not.

Good amateur zoom
Good, but not spectacular zoom. Very good sharpness when the aperture is closed to 8, or smaller vallues. Metal mount, plastic body. Worth the spent money.

GREAT lens at a SUPERB price
I am an amateur photographer (read: take lots of pictures at parties, of the dog, on vacation etc.). Until I bought this lens, I had a 28-80mm (came with my Minolta XTsi) and a 70-210mm (bought when got camera) but I always wanted a wide-angle lens.Problem is that most wide-angle lenses are *very* expensive.(For instance, I searched for other wide-angle lenses when I bought this and the next closest one was $300!)Read more

All in one
Have recently purchased this lens for my Maxxum St si. The lens weighs much heavier than the Minolta 35-80mm lens which came with my camera but covers a much extended focal length range, possibly all that I would ever want to shoot within. The focusing rings turns as faster as the oneon the smaller lens did. Convenient and versatile but not perfect
I was excited to get this lens and have the capability of zooming in close without having to switch lenses for wide angle shots.It does a good job, is very easy to operate, but I am a bit dissappointed with its ability to focus up close.It can not take pictures of objects closer than 6-8 feet.So I will still keep my 35-80 lens in my camera bag for those shots that I just can't back away from. ... Amazingly sharp
I was looking forward to using this lens and it didn't let me down. The pictures I've gotten with it are very sharp and surprisingly balanced in light and color. Only drawback: weight. This is not a lens to carry around or take quick snapshots because, in addition to the weight, which makes the camera too heavy to hold adequately, the focusing can be a little tricky and easy to lose. Once I got used to these "difficulties" I really enjoyed this lens. The zoom is outstanding!! I would recommend buying a tripod w/this lens--which is, by the way, a real value for the money.
