Very good picture quality, silent and fast. Unbeatable for the price. Image stabilization is awesome.
First off, this lens works wonderfully with Canon's 20D, 30D and 5D. The image stabilization gives the photographer a serious edge. In my experience, when the IS is active, I'm able to shoot at a much lower speed, without having any blurring. Throughout the range of the lens, image sharpness is excellent, although a little soft when you zoom near 300. Otherwise, from 75 to 280 aprox. image quality is astonishing. I have shot at weddings, sport events, low-light conditions and very in cold climate conditions and the lens performed flawlessly. The ability of focussing manually is a plus. Automatic focus is always accurate. Just a few times in more than 3000 shots has the lens slowed a bit when focusing, but I must say that the objets were moving. The weight of the lens is ok, not too heavy, construction seems according to Canon standards. When shooting in particular situations, the silent USM mechanism is really a welcome feature. Overall, a very nice lens for the serious and amateur photographer.

Get the new 70-300 IS instead!
At 300mm this lens is VERY soft, it's hard to get a shot that looks like it's in focus.To do so, you need to shoot at about f/11, and then since there is little light available, you usually have to bump the ISO to 800 or 1600 just to get an acceptable shutter speed. Of course, the high ISO then introduces other artifacts.The focus is also dead slow and often doesn't lock on.This is a lens that I have constantly fought with.Don't upgrade to the new 70-300 IS either, as it's only marginally better.
For the money it can't be beat
I get frustrated by all the negative reviews this lens gets on the web. Yes, the AF is slow and the IS is first generation. Yes, it's not totally sharp and it's slow at the long end. But what other $440 (inc shipping) 300mm lenses with IS is there?

Spend some extra cash and get some better glass
When my EOS 10D arrived I was without the lens I really wanted (Canon's 28-135 IS) so my local Wolf store let me 'borrow' this as a holdover. I [took] about 400 pictures at a local horse show and was astounded at how soft the pictures came out. So bad were the images that I thought my 10D had the fabled 'focus' issue. I quickly returned the lens and advanced my purchase of a prime (the Canon EF 50mm macro 2.5). Wow - like having a different camera. The 28-90 has a fast, quiet autofocus, but after that the only good thing is it's price. If you're interested in sharp pictures at all, spend some extra money - you'll be happier in the long run. ... Worth the money

You really do get what you pay for, but...
sometimes that cost can be overwhelming.I got this lens 10 years ago with my my Rebel G (film camera).I used this lens for about six months after getting my Digital Rebel.For the most part I was reasonably happy with my results. When stopped down to about f8 this lens can take some pretty good shots.About a year ago I bought Canon's 70-200mm f4L.When I go back and look at the shots taken with the two lens the difference is pretty dramatic.The 70-200 f4 shots tend (for the most part) to be very sharp with great contrast and color, while the 80-200 f4.5-5.6 tend to be pretty soft and drab.I would like to provided links to show the difference but Amazon does not allow it.Do a google for pbase and you can look at images from many different lenses.

I had purchsed this lens for an EXTREMELY reasonable price and i must say it was worth every dollar.The shipping was also cheap and i recieved it in 4 days.There are no scratchs or dents and the lens was kept very clean.VOM is an excellent dealer and i encourage others to use their service.They are friendly and very well priced.Thank you so much.Ill buy from you again soon.

I bought this lens on the advice of the other reviewers, and I was not at all disappointed. This is a fantastic lens for what you pay. It is indeed a light light lens and it almost feels "cheap," but it functions great and takes great shots. When focusing manually, it doesn't feel as smooth as some other lenses.
