Why is this lens so expensive?
I bet if you are considering buying the 85mm 1.8 you came across this lens and thought to yourself why is the 85mm 1.2 so much more expensive? Is it sharper? Is it that much better?

Wanna Shoot Portraits in Low Light?
Then this is the lense for you. However, there is a tradeoff with a lense this fast and that is weight. You'll definately know you've got a camera in your hands. You'll definately wind up with photos that have crisp edges too. You won't find a better performing 85mm anywhere on God's green earth. Those other cameramakers are lagging way behind the geniuses at Canon. Canon just keeps making their stuff, better, faster, more gooder (the incorrect grammar was on purpose to make a point).

... ok, it's not the best lens in the world, but you can't find anything cheaper and lighter, and you are going to take better photos that with a point & shoot camera. Experts say that the best way to learn photography is get 3 good primes lens, I disagree, get a very [inexpensive] zoom lens, take photos and look how you use your camera, after that you can think what you *really* need: a better zoom, several primes lens or all. Poor quality
Very poor quality lens.Came with a Rebel kit.Inoperable after a year of ownership.$120 repair estimate -- more than the new cost.I recommend you avoid this lens.

not bad.... but you should consider paying a little more
I, like most people, got this lens when buying a kit.Unlike one review, I found this lens to have excellent optics.While not quite like a Nikon lens, the quality of pictures the lens produces is more than enough for most users.For the past 4 years, I have thouroughly enjoyed using it.Unfortunately, something is not ligning up on the connections between the lens and the camera body and the camera is unable to read/set the aperture on the lens, therebye making it impossible to take pictures.I have used other lenses on the body, and they work fine, so I'm assuming it is a problem with the lens.Consider paying a little more when buying a lens... in the long run, it might save you money.
