JVC Camcorder Model GR-SXM250U ~Lens Cap Error~
I bought this camera almost 2 years ago, and it has been great.This camera has a lot of cool features.However, I was very disappointed when I went to use it over the holidays, and it said "lens cap" on the screen.I thought I was crazy because the lens cap was removed and I still got message on the lcd screen.Long story short, I can only watch tapes and no longer record.I have notified JVC and I am still waiting for a response on how to correct the problem.I really like the camera and I hope it can be repaired.If any body has experienced this problem~ please let me know what you did to correct it and if it was very expensive.

This camera does a GREAT JOB for the price. It has all kinds of great features and effects. The only negative I can think of is that it makes a slight noise when zooming in and out.

Excellent, small, MiniDV Camcorder.
The GR-DX300U is the ideal size for outdoor enthusiasts.The camera is small, light and fits perfectly in a backpack or pocket.Despite its size, the 3 inch LCD screen is beautiful, but the viewfinder is easier to use in bright, sunny conditions (unfortunately the viewfinder is B/W).Battery life is dismal and you will need to purchase a backup battery (1 hour at best).Digital still pictures are fair and still do not seem to be as clear or vibrant as those taken by an actual digital camera (I rarely use the camera for stills).However, video quality is excellent and footage is easily transferred to your computer through the fire-wire port (using Windows ME and IE-1339 card and cable).With the correct software, DVD editing and creation is a blast! I have also used the JVC GR-DVM76U and am very pleased with JVC's quality and performance.

Not a long laster
After using this camera very happily for about a year and a half, suddenly videos became very blocky when onscreen objects moved.Now, instantly, everyone reading this is going to say, "How obvious, the heads are dirty."But I don't think this is the case.I have cleaned the camera with a cleaning tape about once every two or three weeks, or when it looked like the heads needed cleaning.But about two months ago, that stopped helping.The picture has become progressively blockier.A couple of days ago, I gently cleaned the heads with q-tips and a non-harming cleaning solution, but this did nothing to improve the camera's condition. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY !!!

JVC GR-AX841 VHS-C Camcorder We use this unit to supply warehouse security systems to the industrial market. No wonder it is out of stock at Amazon (May2000). The camcorder arrived and was setup in about 10 minutes. It has performed without a 'hitch' for several months. The AV output is routed toan Intel PC Camera ProPack webcam. Intel provides with this product a lowcost.... time lapse and motion detection software CD utility. Boththe JVC and Intel parts work well together. I suggest buyers focus onWindows98 and 64MB RAM on their PC to avoid USB lockups on their PC. We arewell pleased and the systems work daily with only a regular environmmentalhousing we made to protect them from dust and cold. JVC makes a fineproduct which we will buy again due to its value and reliability.Thank-you!

The best camcorder I've ever used!
When I decided to buy a camcorder I spent a good month researching and shopping around.This product caught my eye in a display window in a popular department store here in Australia, and was reasonably cheap, so I assumed that it wasn't a great product. Even so I checked it out, anddiscovered that it had everything that even some of the most expensivecamcorders have, including digital zoom and numerous special effects.Itwas light weight and easy to use, and I don't regret buying it for aminute. Once out of the box, I had a quick look through the manual and hadthe camcorder figured out in a matter of minutes.The picture quality isbrilliant, and I would have to say that this JVC product was the bestinvestment I have made in a long time.I highly recommend it to anyonelooking to buy an easy to use, no fuss camcorder, and being JVC you knowit's a brand you can trust.

The worst deal without warranty
I bought it around 3 months. Now it can not play. The vedio is messed with strips. Actually, I used it only several time will totally brand new cassettes. When I connect with JVC, the maintenance man charge me 30 dollars for a look and uncertain dollars for labor. It is crazy!!!!!

Great videos but poor pictures?
I bought this camcorder more than 1 year ago, and I'm quite satisfied with it, as it really makes good videos, and the special effects are useful too. The flash is not so good, but that's ok. Which I find strange is the bad quality of the pictures, they're supposed to get good resolution. I still hope that's because I just don't have the best software (Pixela Image Mixer 1.0 which came with the cam.), and I'm looking for it. I believe that if the pictures can only be captured that bad, the option wouldn't exist... If anyone knows of any better software and want to let me know at (...)I'd be pleased!

I have this cam almost 2 years. Before i will buy it.I have to read any review and check at the store.I have many choice to buy another brand cam like sony, canon, pana, etc. When i think again and again . I think this is the great one.And for the problem that someone got it.I know how to fix it by yourself.
Zoom gone mad!
I bought the grdx97 camera new, back in march 2005.This past month or so, the camera has begun malfunctioning.When turned on, within a few seconds of recording, the zoom automatically starts, resulting in a blur.I tried changing the zoom feature to limit the max zoom at 12x, but still, it zooms to the max of 12x, thus limiting my ability to film anything at home.

works ok but...
This camera is easy to operate but when it comes to getting the footage on the camera turned into a DVD it is not so easy. I am a fairly comfortable and experienced computer user but not an expert. The software included has very inadequate instructions. For example it says "never plug the camera into the computer while the camera is turned on". Later it says "don't ever turn the camera on or off with it plugged into the computer". Hmmm, this makes it awfully hard to transfer files! An email to JVC customer service received no reply!
Great little camera, but night shooting a little grainy.
I really like the long record time of this camera.I bought this camera for my trip to Europe, and it was great.It's small, yet powerful.I could record off and on for days before having to dump the movies on my laptop.I would suggest getting a second battery, preferably the 3 hour.The 5 hour is almost the size of the camcorder itself, and made it heavier.

Display screen has gone twice on this camcorder
I've had this camcorder for almost 4 years now and yes it is extremely portable and compact, but the screen on this camcorder has gone black on me twice.The first time it went it displayed a rainbow of colors when opening the display which made it useless and had to send it out to JVC for repair and had no camera for almost 3 weeks.Now it has just gone bad again and this time it's completely black making the eyepiece the only way to record which is nearly impossible on this small camcorder.Overall, the color quality and features are good from this camcorder but I've had too many problems with this item now to give it more than two stars.Any consumer shouldn't have to replace an LCD screen on their camcorder 2 times within a two year time frame.I wouldn't recommend buying this item.While the portability of it is nice, the lack of being able to actually record on it far outweighs any of it's strong points that it does have.With a newborn and 3 year old at home I need a camcorder that actually can record on the fly and shouldn't have to worry about whether or not the screen will turn on.

JVC Does Not Stand Behind Their Products - JVC Lemoncorder
I agree with the many other users who have experienced the "Condensation, Operation Paused" defect on their JVC GR-xxxx. Despite numerous others reporting this problem, JVC says its not a recognized problem. I would disagree - it is a recognized problem, but its your problem, not theirs.

An average camera with an infinite recording time
I bought this to replace my broken Digital8 Sony camcorder and the same sales guy who sold me the Sony 6 years ago advised me to buy this JVC, on one single criterion: the near-infinite hard disk drive storage. This was almost the only claim that was actually fulfilled.

small camera with allot of value. Video quality is above what you would think a small camera could do. JVC proves they now what they are doing with this camera. image stabilization works top notch when zoomed back. dim lit rooms are pretty good. portability is perfect. slide lens cover is very convenient!!!! very well built and it fills so in your hand. i have 5 video camera's and i always take this one everywhere i go. instant on and off when you lift thelcd screen is a bonus feature that you will learn to love. manual controls for $600 dollar camera are above par. What good is looks without reliability?
I am an aesthetic person and i love beautiful things, so when i saw this, I bought it automatically on looks alone. Its functionality is great too but it all went wrong after 6 months. The flip out 2 inch screen started going blank when i pulled it out. Because of this it has soured my experience of the product hence only 3 stars. Has anyone ever had this problem and how, or how much did it cost you to fix it.

I really like this machine.The owner's manual is good and the features are useful.For VHS-C format, one has the option of standard-play for 30 minutes of recording or extended-play for 90 minutes of recording.The night vision feature is good - I recorded shots in almost total darkness and the camera made it look like the lights were normal in the room.The LCD screen is really good so that the user can use it for shooting or for playback viewing.The zoom freaked me out at how sharp the picture could be at about 50 or so yards.The price seems okay and this camera is a pretty good deal - for my purposes anyway.

A good camcorder for the money
I bought this model after I have done quite sometime researching for this range of camcorders. This one was picked because it provides the most of the features for the money. Also, because I don't care much for the still picture quality since digital camera is what you should get if you are in for still pictures. In term of video quality, this one offers the same par with a much higher cost models. I have used it for over 9 months now, and over all, I'm very happy with it. My husband and I bought this camcorder to make short films for competition and we were very happy with it. The picture quality is excellent both indoors and out. The sound is good but it tends to pick up a lot of echo in large indoor spaces. It doesn't eat up battery power (which was a concern) and is very easy to use. The night-alive feature was a disappointment though... as the others have said it makes your subjects blurry and appear in slow motion. Overall, we love this camera and are very pleased with its performance.

Upgrade available for Picture Navigator for Windows XP
I recently purchase a new PC with Window XP Professional.I was having trouble downloading images to my PC, like many of the other reviews have stated.I found a download which fixed my problem.
troubles transferring still images from serial port
I was quite impressed when I first used this camera, but after a few months, it's turning out to be a problem. I'm having the worst luck trying to download the still images on to my PC. Apparently, the enclosed software Multimedia Navigator(1 disc: JLIP VideoCapture | JLIP VideoProducer | PictureNavigator) does not work on the Windows 98 as it said, neither in W2K and Windows XP. Don't buy this
I bought this in a few years ago and it worked fine for a while.Read more

Well This Review should have been in 2002
For all those with the dreaded cleaning error, I can sympathize - my experience has been somewhat better - I used a Panasonic cleaning tape and that pretty much solved the error problems - we bought the camcorder back in july of 2002 I think for roughly $400.00 off of ebay - Looking back I probably would have gone with a Sony MiniVHS recorder - whatever it's called (the type that takes the small VHS tapes) - Anyway I use only sony DV tapes and that seems to have saved me... I really feel bad for alot of people who had problems with this thing - Customer service person said eventually it will need a new Drum Head - for 250.00 but that won't happen! Again I can't emphasize using a/the Panasonic cleaning tape - Take care folks - JVC is wrong for putting out this product with out testing it thoroughly -

For all of you who want to benifit from the people who have suffered buying JVC NEVER EVER BUY JVC.The company officials are not cooperative.Please dont wat your money

This product came as nicely packaged and had all the bells and whistles and was way ahead of time in terms of progressive scan, miniaturization, etc.The progressive scan feature certainly tempted me to buy this product.Read more

HEAD CLEANING REQUIRED""USE CLEANING CASSETTE"
I purchased my JVC DSL300U new back in 2000.I bought the extended warranty for an extra chunk of change.I couldn't be more unhappy with the product and so I am leaving these commments.It is an expensive camera and it if would have worked some of the time over the last 5 years I would have been happy with it.The largest problem is that it flashes the message "HEAD CLEANING REQUIRED""USE CLEANING CASSETTE".When this happens it does not work.Cleaning does not help.I have had it into the repair shop every time I tried to use it and it would work on average of 10 minutes to 30 minutes after I got it back.Often the authorized repair shop would say they could find nothing wrong or to try JVC tapes.I have only used JVC tapes in the camera.There is also the message E04 that tells you to remove and reinstall the battery.Lets be honest, removing and reinstalling the battery does absolutely nothing to fix the problem.I have taken very good care of it and it has NEVER been dropped.When I have actually thought is was recording and later looked at what I recorded birthday / holiday, Ifound out that it did not work correctly.Wide horizontal red and lines and no sound is not my idea of a good recording.Maybe you think I got a lemon.I did a web search on google with the following: JVC "head cleaning required" .I found out that all of the JVC mini DV cameras have the same problem and I am not alone.Do the search yourself before you buy any JVC video camera.Consumer reports November 2004, page 29 rates JVC mini DV as the worst in repairs and serious problems.It also rates JVC VHS-C as the worst for repairs and serious problems.You have been warned.Good luck!
'great little companion, but delicate.
I've had this camcorder for about 3 years now and it's been a nice addition. The battery life is fair (roughly an hour), and the picture quality is above average. I say that because it doesn't pick up all the details on pictures that you'd get from say just a digital camera. I like how the flashlight in the front actually does a good job and doesn't light things to a minimal effect. Dark rooms light the heck up once you switch that sucker on. The digital screen shows everything perfectly (for its size that is) and you won't have any trouble making sure you're getting everything or not. The sound is pretty good as well. Even when talking close to the speaker on it, I rarely got fuzz or any other weird effects added to voices. There's also a snapshot feature which isn't excactly innovative, but nice if you'd rather take a quick picture instead of taping something for a few seconds. Keep in mind that when you tape something, even after you see the status change to "REC", a second or two might get cut out. With the snapshot though, you don't get the full image because of a white border around the image. So be careful there.
Great for beginners
This is my first camcorder, and I'm having a ball with it!It's so easy to use, and I love the snapshot feature that allows me to take a snapshot image in the midst of recording, and it even throws in a little shutter click sound for effect!Maybe I'm easy to please, as I have no prior camcorder experience, and therefore no preconceived notions as to performance.But the picture looks great, and the sound is decent.I'm basically just using this for family purposes, and it serves me well! ...
