Great picture at a great price
When I purchased this product I was looking primarily at Sonys, but the salesman suggested if I wasn't interested in digital at this time to give the Hitachi a look.I did.For the price the quality can't be beat.The picture is crystal clear and the zoom capabilties are incredible.This is a great camera to record the family outing and dub tapes for the rest of the family.I still am amazed at how clear this camera is, and easy to operate!Good choice. ... Hitachi has taken a step backwards!
This unit is barely featured enough to call it a hi8 camcorder. I remember when Hitachi was considered a high end manufacturer but this tells me they want to waller with the Samsungs, Daewoo and other low-end qualitycompanies. The best low dollar hi8 comes from Canon with many features.Hitachi needs to step up to where they were and let the others be.

No stereo!
I can't understand how they can call this Hi-8 without a stereo output.Even if the picture is a good as Hi-8, sound is important too!The S-video connector is not compatable with the connector on my capture card.I'm sending mine back! ... Read more

Excellent product!Have used for 6 months, and it's great!
Camera take exceptional pictures, has high quality in Hi8 mode.You can purchase long life batteries (>2500 MaH) that allow you to record for extremely long periods even using the LCD screen as your viewfinder.Theimage stabilization is very good, allowing videos to be hand held, butyielding a very stable picture.The internal lens cap feature is verynice, out of the way when shooting, yet nothing to lose.The resolution onthe direct viewfinder is exceptional, and even though it is B/W it is veryusable combined with the color LCD for playback.Having an internalviewfinder is extremely useful in bright light situations where the LCD iswashed out/hard to see.Read more

Nice DVD Cam, but no PC kit on stock,
I'm currently own this particular model. I truly enjoy using my DVD cam and find it very appealing, but I'm overly regret ever buying the particular brand name. My main criticism comes from not being able to located Hitachi PC kit for this particular model and it has prevented me from making my own DVD videos.Therefore, for the money spends on the particular brand it's a total lost--Thanks Hitacti for your excellent! Overall, If you're not interested in using your PC to make DVD home movies, then perhaps it's right for you.

poor media editing capabiltiy
PROS: Timely Hitachi support response to all 4 of my emails.CONS: Impossible to edit/transfer w/ leading software, Limited edit/media transfer with bundled Ulead Movie Factory SE. OPINION: Buy for top quality recording of 30 min. DVD-R/DVD-RAM with playback limited to use of camera cabled to PC or TV. If you want to do anything more, the software is not available to help you without 3rd party program to convert .vob files to MPEG2 (which most software programs can import). Great Camera, but READ THIS
Just a note for people who buy this camera.Takes great images and easy to use however if you plan on importing your video to your PC, you won't be able to edit it with any normal video software.The ONLY program that currently is able to edit the .VRO files that this uses is ULEAD personal edition.This adds... to the price of the camera. ... Total Garbage
It's difficult to translate into suitable words how I feel about this camcorder.To set the stage, I run a software development company and consider myself extremely comfortable with technology.So I'm no amature user of video and software.
overall good
Overall, we like the camcorder... love the technology.The day after I got it, I used the camcorder to shoot video of my cousin's HS graduation.The downfall is the software, I still haven't gotten it installed and haven't taken the time to research.I have a scandisk drive to load pic and works well.Because there is no flash, pics at night aren't great, but overall I have liked the pictures.Because the camera is only 1 MP, they aren't going to be SUPER pictures, but good for capturing pics to send to friends & family.
Good movie camera, worthless for still pictures
The camera works fine for movies and it is a gread widget as DVD and DVD-RAM writer, SD card reader/writer, etc.

Great Family Product / User Friendly
We gambled on this Hitachi package because its description and photographs appeared to fit the FAMILY Vs. Unitied Artists FILMAKER category, seeking a "User Friendly" model. The gamble paid the following dividends. ACamCorder that is light, simple to operate without requiring the 3 eyedcamera-person. 1 to film and 2 to consult the owners manual. This modelcomes with a lo light feature Vs. built in lights on other models. Our lolight filming in both indoor and outdoor settings proved positive with"tru color" imagery without the lamp glare that is common withthe built ins. The Autofocus feature will require more attention, as it isvery positive to the dead-center subject rule, especially involving indoormoving targets i.e. 5 year old grandsons. One feature not advertised wasthis CamCorder's 2.5" Flip out screen:its COLOR!The camera bag isattractive and roomy. Tripod is ok, but its a lightweight model.
