5-0 out of 5 stars I love this camera
I love this camera. It is one of the only manual cameras still being manufactured.Digital-electronic monstrosities (which are unbelievably expensive) simply cannot produce images like a simple manual camera with a good 50mm lens.

Cosina is a "behind the scenes" Japanese manufacturer of many cameras and lenses, and have made cameras for many branded as high-end and entry level models for decades. If you purchases an SLR, or if you've amassed a collection 3rd party lenses, good chance you have something made by Cosina but didn't know it.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Jungles to the Desert, Great Camera
Greetings, Hope this finds everyone to be in good health and happiness.I traded my minolta slr w/2 lenses and flash for the 3800N back in 2002 and have enjoyed it ever since. This camera is used primarily for B/W as well as continued learning of the fundamentals of photography and creative ideas. I have taken it through five different jungles in SE Asia, in the desert, and across fifteen states with no problems. If you have an idea of a grunts life, it isn't easy or clean. This camera takes the abuse and still performs they way it should.Maintain proper care and protection from the environment with all the accessories available and you 've got a great artistic kit at little cost. Have fun with this camera and be artistic.
5-0 out of 5 stars It Compares with the Best of Them
For the past 30 years, I have been a devoted Nikon user, though I have a Pentax K1000 and assorted Pentax lenses that were given to me as a gift about 20 years ago.The K1000 was misplaced in a move a few years ago (I'm sure it will turn up one day when I finally get to clean out my attic), and I was longing to use a fully manual SLR.I took a chance with the Vivitar V3800N as the price was right and it came with a better warranty than a used K1000.It could also use all of my Pentax lenses which I had not misplaced.I have put this camera through the wringer and it has come through on every occasion. For those who complain that the Vivitar lens quality is lacking in quality and performance (which I find not to be the case), there is an ample supply of new and used Pentax lenses which produce results that rival my Nikons.I frequently use the Vivitar lens and am delighted by its performance. The camera is built solidly and performs solidly. Results are consistent and I never worry about damaging it as it is not costly to replace. So, if you ever have the feeling that you want to be a true photographer rather than the caretaker of a small computer that takes photographs for you, I highly recommend the V3800N.Indeed, Nikon thinks so highly of it that they sell it as the FM-10 and will continue to have it manufactured for them by Cosina as one of two 35mm SLR's they will keep on the market in the digital age, the other being the Nikon-manufactured F6.The Vivitar is a well-made bargain that delivers!!Buy it and enjoy it. ... No reliability.Purchased for vacation. 1st day all electronics shut down and would not come on.1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Camera
I have had other Vivitar products, and the quality was excellent. I selected this camera based on the quality of other Vivitar products I have had. This camera was a huge disappointment. It was a problem from day one. Film would not re-wind, camera "froze" and would not take photos at all. I thought possibly just a "single" isolated bad camera; however a friend has same camera, and the same problems. Had to take camera to photo shop & they professionally re-wound film. I have since returned camera. Will purchase differently in future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality housing
I purchased this Vivitar camera as a gift for my daughter. The camera arrived damaged. The very thin, cheaply made door latch was broken.I have used another model Vivitar camera for years, and have taken beautiful pictures, but his model does not measure up to previous Vivitar quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
I purchased this camera recently and the only problem I have had with it thus far is the battery not being included as mentioned in the ad,so I did have to purchase one. Otherwise my pictures have come out extremely well and I havent had any other problems with the product as mentioned in the other reviews.I found the instructions included to be very helpful and the camera easily able to be worked. My advice to anyone is to simply try it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not outstanding
Well, I bought this lens for use with my Canon Digital Rebel XT, and I like the fact that it has a relatively large aperture and has focal lengths from 28-210mm.However, the lens had many particles of what appeared to be dust inside of the lens as soon as I took it out of the box.Basically the only way to clean it would be to take apart the lens. It's so bad that it shows up on the pictures that I take.Vivitar tells me that I can ship the lens back to them and they will try to replace it, so I guess we'll see what happens.Oh yeah, I was kinda pissed when I bought the lens for $230 at this very site like three weeks ago and now it is selling for $121.I seriously think that I was the first person to buy one of those lenses in a long time; I mean, the lens's box was covered in dust when I opened the package.Anyways, I guess it will work, but it's not exactly the top of the line.Oh yeah, for those of you who have a silver Digital Rebel XT, this lens in a silver color does not match exactly. The lens's color is more of a champaign tint while the camera is actually silver. ... As a photography student I fell in love with this lens the moment that I got it.It has a good zoom without being heavy and doesn't make me feel like a tabloid reporter. The range is perfect for day to day use because it allows you to get close as well as shoot from clear across the street.28 is a decent wide angle and the 300 is fabulous. A purchase that I would make again. The greatest part about this is that you aren't forced to change your lens over and over to capture different kinds of shots. You can leave the standard lens at home. The camera of fashion photographers, Nikon delivers on quality as always. The lens also adapts to all Nikon models.A good buy if not one of the best that I have ever made for my camera. Of course they already said all of this in the other blurb, but I just had to back them up on what they said earlier. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivitar 28-300 for Nikon is very good for me.
I have a Nikon camera F-60 with Vivitar28-300 Series one zoom lens and BOWER UV coated filter since 12/1999. " They" always give the SHARP pictures for us ( myself and my community ). I'm the main photographer for my Vietnamese community. And my people has been satisfied with the photographs from my Nikon F-60 + Vivitar lense 28-300 andBOWERUVCOATEDFILTER.
1-0 out of 5 stars Vivitar 28-300 lens for Nikon AF
We own this lens for several years using it on Nikon F70. I was very disappointed with the over-all quality (esp. sharpness) of the lens. Tamron 28-200 lens is supposed to be also on the "lower" end of the quality scale - I tried it once and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE compared to the 28-300. In other word: even the much critized Tamron 28-200 is better. Very likely a 28-300 even with reasonable compromise would unreasonably stretch the budget and perhaps the OEM of Vivitar (Vivitar does not have his lens factory) did the best they could for that money. I am curious, how good or bad is the 28-300 offering from Tamron. The Vivitar Series 1 IMHO does not deserve the "Series 1" name. I am affraid, in order to cover a long range with better quality one would still need 2 or even 3 lens.

Use this camera for learning photography or for shooting as an amateur especially if you want to go into manual mode for more creative photographic effects. The solidly constructed body and 35-70 macro zoom lens are both made in Japan. The camera accepts standard/widely-available K-mount lenses and Vivitar flashes. The focusing is very easy and the zoom mechanism is very smooth. This enabled me to take high quality photos without the need for expensive lithium batteries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Also Dissapointed
I bought this camera and was also dissapointed.Mine also jammed and would not let another roll of film load. This was very dissapointing in the middle of my nephew's 5th birthday party!Try something else!

3-0 out of 5 stars FAIR Camera
This camera takes fair pictures.Very good from a distance of 5-6 feet, not as clear as you are further from target. The batteries also do not last as long, and the date imprint is faint, invisible on light backgrounds.Spend a little more money on a better quality camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was initially excited when my son opened the box for Christmas, and it seemed to work great with the first roll of film, but the camera has since jammed and will not allow another roll of film to be loaded.Next time I will select a more expensive camera ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars One-Time Use Cameras Better Than This One!!!!
I received this camera as a gift and am VERY disappointed with it!!! Pictures taken outside were ok at best, and the ones taken inside, even with alot of lighting, are very dark and hard to see.I would recommend buying a disposable camera before buying this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs!!
This camera is horrible! I was going away to live in Eastern Europe and didn't want to be bothered with looking for a camera there so I bought two!! Two months later the winding mechanism had broken on both of them. I was so ticked. I thought maybe it was some kind of super fluke but then I talked to some other people who had bought the same camera and their winding mechanism broke too. So my advice is spend another Ten bucks and by a camera that is going to work for longer than a month.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only recommended for outdoor pictures
I would only recommend using this camera for taking pictures outside on sunny days. Even taking pictures in a car when there is still daylight produces dark pictures. This camera just doesn't seem to do well inside. ... Read more
