Editorial Review

The Canon Elan 7 uses seven focusing points, arranged in a wide cross pattern with a central "cross-type" sensor. The wider-than-usual area gives the photographer the ability to achieve a remarkably sharp, focused image instantly. This function works whether the subject is off-center, stationary, in motion, in low light, or even in low-contrast situations. The shot will still come out sharp and crisp, and without the need to recompose the shot. By using the focusing-point selection keys, the user is able to select any of the seven focus points simply by pressing a key. Representing a bold innovation in speed and usability, this feature gives an additional amount of image control back to the photographer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I just love my Elan 7!
After living with a manual focus camera for 20 years, I'd splurged and bought myself the Canon Rebel and a couple lenses.I was happy with it, but it lacked some features I was seeking.Enter the Elan 7.Oh my!Once I learned how to use the multiple frame feature, there was no stopping me!I stopped getting so-so shots of my sons in their soccer games, and was getting at least one spot on perfect out of the two or three. This alone makes the camera worth its price for me, but there are other aspects I like as well.4-0 out of 5 stars My main camera
I bought this as my first (and as of now, only) auto-focus SLR. I'm generally pleased with the camera: the metering is fine and it's fairly problem free.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera!
I purchased the Elan 7 about two months ago as a refurbished unit.Unfortunately, the camera had a defective feature button. But the problem was quickly resolved by sending the camera back for a replacement.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally happy with this camera
I got this camera second-hand from my Dad.It was my first SLR camera, but I learned on it and all my lenses and accessories are compatible with Canon's newer DSLR's like the 20D and the upcoming 30D, which I plan to get to use side-by-side with my Elan IIe.The controls are even similar, which will make the learning curve minimal to get started with the digital.Autofocus is nearly flawless, exposure meter is very good too.The only complaint I have is the flash -there's a flash button on the top of the camera and I have no idea what it does. There's no fill flash (annoying), and you simply can't control whether or not the flash is used in certain modes (like macro and portrait).I understand the logic behind it to a degree, but I'd really like the ability to control the flash :P

5-0 out of 5 stars Frozen Life With A Elan II
I've owned this camera for three years and have yet to had any problems with it and it's quality never ceases to amaze me.I highly recommend this camera to amateur-professional photographers.Whether you are new to the photography world or a seasoned photographer this camera allows for versatility, capatablity, and most of all, convenience.Functions as a simple automatic camera to complex fully manual camera w/lots of extra features for creative photographers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Intro to SLR
I have had this camera (coupled with a Sigma 28-105 lens) for about a year and a half now. This camera has allowed me to explore techniques in photography that you just don't get with other models. It comes with more features than you can shake a stick at!The price listed here too is awesome.I got mine for ... without the lens.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for Intro to 35mm SLR
This camera make and model is close to my heart just because this was the one that I learnt my 35mm SLR photography. The settings and customer functions that the Elan IIe has has met my photographic needs partly because as a student, this was what I could afford and second, I photography insects and closeups of flowers. So investing in a dedicated macro lens combined with this Elan IIe body was the ideal match.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this unit, but...
...this camera represents a little older technology, now about4 years old.... The Canon 7e , which you should investigate, has supplanted this body with some significant improvements, such as autofocus speed and 7 autofocus points. For $300, though the Canon Rebel 2000 also has 7 autofocus points. The Canon Elan IIe has 3 autofocus points, but with the eye control feature.I can't honestly say that the eye control has helped me much as I mostly shoot landscapes, but it would help for shooting people, animals and action.Unlike the Rebel 2000, this unit has a mirror lockup feature, which flips the mirror up for 2 seconds before releasing the shutter--this will reduce the effect of the mirror slap just before shutter release and assure sharper pictures for those shutter speeds between 1/30 and 1/8 seconds.Of course, your mileage may vary if you don't shoot landscapes or still life.Read more
