3-0 out of 5 stars Quite technical but good
I like this camera, the viewfinder doesn't really block the view, just a little bit in the bottom right of the bit you look through, but it doesn't affect the pictures at all.

Editorial Review

The Canon Elan 7 E Date features the eye-controlled focus system, thefastest means of focusing and metering a photographer can find. By using morefocusing points and greater off-center coverage than other cameras in its class, this camera is able to take an exact reading in approximately 1/20 of a second. When the photographer brings the camera to their eye, their glance is tracked bythe focusing system, allowing framing and focusing to become a singleuninterrupted creative process. An easy, one-time calibration is all that'sneeded to activate the eye-controlled focus system. Once this calibration iscomplete, the camera is able to precisely detect which part of the viewfinderthe photographer is using. It then automatically focuses the lens with amazingaccuracy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of all
Talk about bang for your buck. This camera has everything you'd expect from a mid-range camera and some you usually only find on high-end cameras. The eye control focus works great though you do need to calibrate it many times in different lighting conditions. The controls are well placed and easy to use. The custom functions are relatively simple to set and allow you to customize how the camera operates. Functions like the true mirror lock-up and the 4 fps advance speed help place this camera securely in the top ranks of its class. The thing that surprised me the most was the near silent operation. Even on rewind you can only hear it if you place your ear near the body (unless of course you choose to rewind at the faster speed). Of course there are options I'd love to see added like a PC cable port and an interchangeable focusing screen but thats why there are pro class cameras. Like I said before, this camera is hard to beat for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Died after 2.5 years
Till yesterday I was all praises for this camera and would have given 5 stars. Its got the features for a beginner to reach a serious amature role with low cost. Well yesterday it died on me. I have had the camera for 2.5 years and shot probably around 100 rolls with it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy Canon User

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Sure Shot Camera- takes out all the guesswork!
This is a camera for beginners and seasoned photographers alike. It's lightweight, easy to grab, point, and shoot- and takes great pictures every time!(Assuming, of course, you have composed a nice picture). This model has the zoom/date features, focus lock, self timer, auto flash, red eye reduction, real time release and slow syncho modes.Great for vacations, and a great price!I actually had two of these cameras, one for color, one for black & white!I was never disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars love this camera.
I bought this camera when i was going to school in Hawaii. The pictures i got from it were clear and crisp I never had any problems with it. I was disappointed when someone stole it from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sure Shot Missed
I too was disappointed in the Canon Sure Shot. Mainly, the pictures are not as sharp and crisp as I had hoped; and the indoor pictures have never come out that great. The metal pieceon the front that protects the lens FELL off (discovered after the fact, so it was too late to find where it had fallen off), so now I get "light leaks". I will probably not buy a Canon camera again--and will go back to an Olympus. ... Read more

Finally--an underwater camera that's small enough to take anywhere, yet advanced enough to give you high-quality results with easy operation. The Canon Elph Sport camera integrates Elph's crowd-pleasing Advanced Photo System ease of use and portability with a sporty waterproof body. Not only does it take pictures on land at the touch of a button, but it is submersible to 16.4 feet for underwater photography. It's a good bet for vacations, since you don't have to lug around a separate, clunky underwater camera in addition to your point-and-shoot. The Elph Sport easily fills both roles, offering signature Canon quality along with special features designed to make underwater shooting easier.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera if you can still find one!
I received this camerera as a prize and would recommend it to anyone. We use this camera as our primary camera for everything!I took it in with me when my daughter was born, snorkeling, fishing, hiking and I have now handed it to my now toddler. If you have had a toddler, they can break anything with the exception of this ELPH SPORT.I have had this camera for 4 years and have nothing but good things to say!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good camera, good value.
My camera has really stood up to the elements and multiple beatings. It has worked well for me taking pictures underwater and in the surf, and has also been to the top of multiple 20,000+ feet mountains.Dropped countless times on rock, snow, sand, and also dunked as much into water.I have learned to force the flash on anything but super sunny days - the pics come out a bit dark in conditions other cameras would have no problem with, and i've found it could really use a filter in intense light situations.Nothing you wouldn't expect from a specialty use camera.Just bought a second spare one for when the first one finally does give up - which i don't think will be for a long time.5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Combination of Features and Quality
If you are considering buying an APS camera, then you should look no further. Note, however, that APS film is a bit more expensive than regular 35mm film, but it is much more versatile (standard Normal, Group, and Panoramic modes, etc). The reason why this camera so great is most obviously its design. The case is waterproof as well as shockproof. After taking it with me hiking, I tripped three times, each time with the camera in my hand (in its little case), and showed no signs of damage, and still worked great underwater. For me, this is great, as I usually end up losing things in my messy room, and hence they usually get banged around. This camera is durable, and therefore there is no worry. Its waterproofing is great feature, as I am constantly taking pictures on my boat, at the beach, or outside where there is always the chance of rain. You don't have to worry about keeping your camera dry, nor does it become a problem if you leave you bag with the camera in it someplace where it might accidentally get wet. The design is extremely easy to use, and the pictures are great (use 400 speed film, its the most versatile). The only bad thing is that you have to fairly responsible about cleaning the camera after salt-water use. Now, I have never done this, and the camera still works fine. Furthermore, this thing is tiny, suprisingly smaller than the most compact 35mm's. You'll be suprised at how small it is (it's not too small though). It also has bumps on the back to help you grip the camera with one hand. To anyone who is concerned about zoom, on most compact camera, APS or 35mm, they barely make that much of a difference. And to anyone considering going digital, I say just get a scanner. Your picture quality will be much better. Recommended without reservation. Its the kind of camera you can just throw in your bag and never have to worry about. One last thing, when you first put it underwater, you will see bubbles coming out. I was concerned, but found out it was just air on the outside of the waterproofing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Canon has once again raised the bar in the world of 35mm SLRs with its EOS Rebel Ti. Canon claims the Rebel Ti has the fastest autofocus (AF) in its class, which should increase accuracy and precision for shooting at a real-life pace. A built-in flash pops up easily for low-light situations, and its extended arm reduces red-eye effect. This version of the Rebel Ti comes without a lens and does not include the quartz date-stamping function.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great start to an awesome line of 35mm SLRs
When buying a SLR camera, you likely intend to purchase additional lenses and/or flashes to build a system (if not, maybe a point and shoot would be better).Canon has an awesome line of flashes, lenses, and other accessories for their bodies.Sadly they all add up to quite an expense, so buying a body at the lower end, such as this one, can allow you to spend more on lenses, which ultimately contribute much more to the final product (only your own abilities exceed them in impact). The difference between this body and some of Canon's higher end ones is minimal for most users (bodies costing 2-4 times as much are metal, sealed from the weather, and may focus quicker, but few really need any of this). This camera leaves few feautures out (especially when compared to competing brands' cameras in this price range), and you can build a wonderful system around it.If you ever do develop a need for a fancier model, you will have learned a whole lot from this body and will have a collection of lenses and flashes to continue to use.

The Canon Elan 7 uses seven focusing points, arranged in a wide crosspattern with a central "cross-type" sensor. The wider-than-usual area gives thephotographer the ability to achieve a remarkably sharp, focused image instantly. This function works whether the subject is off-center, stationary, in motion, inlow light, or even in low-contrast situations. The shot will still come outsharp and crisp, and without the need to recompose the shot. By using thefocusing-point selection keys, the user is able to select any of the seven focuspoints simply by pressing a key. Representing a bold innovation in speed andusability, this feature gives an additional amount of image control back to thephotographer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I just love my Elan 7!
After living with a manual focus camera for 20 years, I'd splurged and bought myself the Canon Rebel and a couple lenses.I was happy with it, but it lacked some features I was seeking.Enter the Elan 7.Oh my!Once I learned how to use the multiple frame feature, there was no stopping me!I stopped getting so-so shots of my sons in their soccer games, and was getting at least one spot on perfect out of the two or three. This alone makes the camera worth its price for me, but there are other aspects I like as well.4-0 out of 5 stars My main camera
I bought this as my first (and as of now, only) auto-focus SLR. I'm generally pleased with the camera: the metering is fine and it's fairly problem free.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera!
I purchased the Elan 7 about two months ago as a refurbished unit.Unfortunately, the camera had a defective feature button. But the problem was quickly resolved by sending the camera back for a replacement.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere...
You may want to consider another brand of point and shoot 35mm film camera. We purchased this camera a little over a year ago, suddenly last week it would no longer load film. Being just beyond the 1 year warranty, we contacted Canon Service for information on repair. We were instructed to send the camera to them for evaluation. We received a phone call from them indicating the camera could not be repaired as they didn't have the parts. They couldn't even offer a replacement of the same camera. What they did offer was the 150U model for $88 with only a 6 month warranty. Based on the reviews here, it sounds like the 150 is not altogether great either. Up until the time the camera quit functioning it took good photos and was easy to use.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera!Recommended
Highly recommended! If you want a great camera that is well built & affordable this is it. I have developed five rolls of film so far and this takes some of the best pictures I've ever seen.My wife has an APS film which doesn't even come close to a 35 mm camera.Great zoom also!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camera!!
I've had this camera now for about 3 years and it still works like a charm and takes great pics w/o any redeye. The only problem I've had was once at a wedding I was taking pics all night and didn't realize I didn't have film until the end of the night. The camera just kept taking pics with flash and everything, so I had no idea. I wish it had something to let you know it needs film. I was very upset but that was mostly my fault. This is a great buy for the cheap price. ... Read more

I got my Z115 in August 1997 in preparation for a monthlong stay in Germany. The thought of lugging my old Minolta SR-T 101, a big and heavy 28-200 zoom, and a separate flash attachment really put me off. The Z115 proved to be a fine alternative, doing pretty much everything I needed it to do, and doing it easily and without much weight or bulk.Read more

I have had this camera for more than 2 years now and have never been let down. This camera has documented several important events and vacations for me and always does a great job. People compliment me and ask how I learned to take such good pictures. Perfect for trips and vacations and ok for events and family photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but now broken
I have taken 1000s of photos with this camera over the years. It only jammed up on me one time with a 36 exposure roll of film, I never went over a 24 exposure roll after that.4-0 out of 5 stars Three Years and A Half Later
I bought this camera before my trip to South Dakota and was thrilled with the resolution of the pictures. People always complimented me on them as if I were a professional, and I thank Canon for that. I still get great pictures, however, I do have some complaints: Candid shots are gone before the shutter goes off; The date stamp is impossible to work with, and is permanentally stopped at 1992 (why 92 I don't know). The date winds up in the worst places in the picture. I won't ever set a date stamp again unless it's tiny and ends up on the extreme corner of a shot--I don't think this exists.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner SLR Camera to Grow With!!
I bought this camera a year ago as my starter camera to learn about film photography. I really didn't know anything about photography when I purchased it, and I still have A LOT to learn, however, I feel as though it's a camera that can grow with me. It has automatic presets that make taking photos for a novice handy - not much thought required, but also allows you to set manual settings so you can experiment and learn.
3-0 out of 5 stars Realize what entry level means...
Being an entry level SRL, the camera body is cheap & light because it is made out of plastic. This more than fine for someone who'd like an SRL to use for specal occasions - kids'birthdays, graduations, or the occasional family road trip.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent entry level camera
I love the camera but it seems difficult to find some accessories which I had come to rely on with my old camera.I may just have to upgrade to another Canon SLR.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible camera
I received the camera without any instructions as how to operate. But thought how hard can it be? Well, the date was next to impossible to set. So I have the wrong date on my pictures. The film does not load easily. the indicators for the auto flash etc. are so tiny it is next to impossible to see! But being a tenacious person I did go ahead and take pictures using two rolls of film. the pictures are just okay. I hate the camera and would not advise anyone who is not a camera expert to buy it!!!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much hype over this camera
Alot of my photos taken at night are grainy or blurry. This camera is ok, not worth all the hype it's getting. Not to mention developing doubles will cost you about $15 per roll. I would stick with digital or 35mm over this.

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad
I have owned this camera for about six months now, and overall I like the compact design, the variety of features it offers and the pretty decent zoom. If you also have a Canon EOS, slow your trigger finger, since the autofocus of the elph is not quite as snappy as the one on your high performance SLR. The flash is very limited in range, so this is ideal for indoor shots at smaller parties, but not at bigger events where you want to cover some distance. Twice I have had problems with fresh APS film involuntarily rewinding and popping out of the camera as used even though only one picture had been taken, but that may have been an issue with the film rather than with the camera. The zoom and autofocus use up quite a bit of battery juice, and the power will go pretty much without warning, so if you travel, have extras handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great replacement camera
I have a 10 year old Minolta 35-mm camera that I've just about beaten up.So, I borrowed this camera from my sister for my trip to Europe last month. The color and B&W pictures came out great.I especially loved the panoramic feature for those broad Italian landscapes and the great outside shots of Versailles and the Louvre! The only time the pictures didn't come out nice ... and this is my only complaint ... was when I was taking shots in a dark church or taking night shots.More often than not, those pictures came out blurry or grainy.Maybe if I used different film (I only used 400 speed while I was in Europe), or held my hand steadier it wouldn't have been a problem -- I'll have to play around with it a little.Otherwise, it is a great camera!Perfect for traveling -- light, compact, and inconspicuous. In fact, I plan on buying one for myself before my next trip abroad! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It blows!!
When I went to a football game, I took photos of the game with the flash on. The photos came out too dark when you zoom in. So I decided to take photos WITHOUT the flash. I recognized that the orange button was blinking repeatedly. When I looked in the manual, it said that it was because the camera was shaking, which the camera was still. It said to use a tripod. I got my pictures back, after trying EVERY mode possible without the flash, and almost ALL of them came out blurry. Why make a camera without a flash if all of the pictures are going to come out blurry?? So basically you can only use this camera with a flash or outside or all of the pictures are going to come out blurry?? Canon has been known for making great cameras and scanners/printers. But this camera was just down right horrid when it came to getting a decent picture. It is overpriced garbage and people at Canon should have made a sure shot camera that lived up to its name. The zoom is nice, as it gets good close ups. But when it comes to using this camera without flash, it is impossible without a tripod. I am not about to bring a tripod to a football game. Why have a sports feature on the camera FOR MOVING OBJECTS if the feature is not going to work?? Seems to me, that the folks at Canon are bonafied MORONS!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A love/hate relationship
I bought this camera before reading the reviews, and then was pretty uncomfortable when I saw all the negative comments. That said, I needed a camera for my first trip to Hawaii that was 1)not expensive, 2)light enough to carry around, and 3)uncomplicated. (I am notorious for NOT wanting to read instructions. Some people love to read those fat little manuals from cover to cover. Not me.)
1-0 out of 5 stars complicated
I purchased this camera to take on a Disney vacation. I decided to use it before the trip to make sure I would be pleased with it. It is complicated to use, even after reading instruction manual. Focusing & centering objects are no easy task; neither is exchanging it for another. Definitly NOT what I had in mind; I wanted a Sure Shot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Used it for 9 1/2 years!
I love my Elan II E.Unfortunately, I broke it in Italy this year.It lasted many thousands of shots over 9 1/2 years. The part which broke was the door clasp.Keep in mind, it lasted nearly a decade!I'm going to buy the Canon 7NE to replace it.Love the system!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Surprised!!!
I found this camera used in a store, and it looked like a pretty good deal, so I called my uncle (a camera brainiac, and a very good photographer) and he said it was a great deal, so I bought it. That's all I thought I was getting; a good deal on a used camera. It's so much more than that. I have actually done some really stupid things when taking pictures (setting the aperture and shutter speeds in such a way that the picture would be ruined is my most common offense) and the picture always comes out perfect. It's actually difficult to take a bad picture with this camera! The Elan II is a very nice camera that is simple enough for beginners, but at the same time, advanced enough for professionals. Taking good pictures is a snap, and most of the controls are self-explanitory and easy to understand. I have never had a problem with this wonderfully engineered camera, and I feel confident that, wether you're a regular pro, or a regular joe, you'll find this camera easy, and fun to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Camera
I've had this camera since 1997 and I love it. It has some cool features, you can be fully auto or fully manual. I have a 75-300mm USM zoom along with the 28-80mm USM that came with it. I kind of wish I'd have paid the extra [...] and gotten the IIe, but I still get great shots. It's not too heavy, focus is quick and quiet, exposure is pretty accurate. I haven't had any problems with it. ... Read more
