    Editorial Review

The Meade ETX90EC is a compact telescope with excellent optics, packaged with a sturdy tripod and the remarkable Autostar computer control. Even though I own several telescopes and belong to an Astronomy club, the first night I took out the ETX, it showed me objects I'd never seen before. The ETX90EC is the computerized version of an affordable Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope first introduced by Meade in 1996. Every reviewer since then has commented on the excellent optics. How excellent? When I presented a session on optical testing at my local Astronomy club, I brought my ETX90 so that everyone could see what a "textbook" star test actually looks like. Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars!
Okay, I know nothing about telescopes. But my husband and I bought this last summer because he thought it'd be fun to star gaze. When we did, it was truly one of the most wonderful experience ever! It allows you to observe celestial objects in brilliant resolution. It wasn't complicated and simple to use. But you do have to read the manual.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meade Does It Right
The Meade ETX90EC lives up to its billing. It's a high-quality piece of gear that exudes craft and workmanship. The bundled package w/Autostar and Tripod gives you most of what you need.If you have any intent of doing terrestrial viewing, you should consider the 45 degree erecting prism. Also, the package does not come with any power adapters. If you plan to be out for a long evening of star gazing, you will probably want the adapter that lets you plug into a cigarette lighter.I wish Amazon had the UHTC version available, but no luck. Finally, I haven't been able to find the correct T-mount adapter for this scope on Amazon.I do want to use it for photography eventually. The main thing I would say is that this is not a toy, but it is ideal for beginners to intermediate enthusiasts.I've had more fun in just a couple sessions than I've ever had before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Meade
This was my husband's big present for Christmas, something he has always wanted. While unwrapping and unpacking, he heard a rattle in the spotting scope.Upon investigation, he fished out a broken set screw and discovered that it had sheared off the outside of the spotting scope.Another screw was badly damaged. The eyepiece covers had all been left off when shipping. Also, all the settings were loose and had to be reset.Meade does not have an 800 number and you are put on hold interminably when you try to contact them. All in all, he likes the scope BUT was very disappointed in the quality of the manufacturer and lack of customer service. What a disappointment for Christams day! ... When the original ETX telescope, the ETX-90RA, was introduced in 1996, it quickly created a revolution in amateur astronomy. Here for the first time was an ultraportable and highly versatile telescope system of unprecedented optical resolution and performance. Within a year of its introduction the ETX became the top-selling modern telescope in the world.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Trouble and Poor Customer Support from Meade
I just purchased a new ETX-125EC (June 2003). I keep getting motor failure errors and retraining does not help. In talking with Meade they indicated that it was probably a motor encoder problem and to please send it back for repairs. The expected wait was quoted as 3 weeks. Asked why the wait was so long it boiled down to "get in line with everyone else needing repairs". Frankly, I didn't pay [money]. for a new scope to get in a 3 week line. I have an old (20 years) C11 as well as a C90 so I am very close to returning the unit to the supplier, who has tried to help but had no pull with Meade to do any better, and telling Meade to take their scope and arrogant customer service and shove it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Portable but Pricey
This is the size that the ETX should have been when it was introduced. The 125 is a relatvely new member of the ETX lineup, and the one that I would recommend first to those with the money and the desire to buy an "UltraPortable" scope. With its 5 inches of aperture, it is the only ETX scope so far that I would recommend for any sort of serious deep sky (galaxies, star custers, nebulae) viewing. (See my review ot the ETX-90 for an explanation of why aperture is important.)4-0 out of 5 stars Good Scope with the right Accessories
This is the GoTo scope of choice with the Autostar. It gives clear views and a distortion-free view of the sky with the standard eye piece. For planetary viewing, the barlow lens is good, but the higher power was not as useful for deep-sky objects.I found the Autostar somewhat difficult to use in the Easy setup mode due to the star choices it gave for orientation of the scope.I recommend using the Two-star set-up mode that lets you pick stars you KNOW you can identify and find.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage telescope
There is a saying among amateur astronomers to stay away from ANY telescope that advertises magnification. This telescope is garbage, I was given one for Christmas several years ago and returned it. The optics are just terrible, the mount unstable and the 60 mm objective appeture will let you see the moon and not much else. For just a few dollars more, you can purchase a SkyQuest 4 - 1/2 inch dobsonian telescope from Orionthat is dozens of times better. Meade does make some nice scopes, but these low end ones are only going to wind up in the junk. I would recommend that before anyone purchase a telescope they first read a book called Nightwatch by Terrence Dickenson, or do some research on the internet. There are many good websites...I have owned several telescopes including another one by Meade and the Saturn is one of the worst telescopes that I've looked through.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inexpensive way to see the stars!
I was able to see so many great details of our solar system when I got this telescope. Sometime in the future I might upgrade to a really nice one, but this one is perfect for my wife and I to look at the moon together. It's a nice rich color too. It looks great sitting in our house next to the window. I think with the great price Amazon sells it for it would make a great gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heaven's Eye Sight
This telescope is a great for new beginners who want to look at the stars and view details fo the moon. It's very easy to set up and very light to carry. If you are interested in looking at the stars, you should get this telescope. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for $122 from Meade... on eBay
Hello!Thinking of the Meade DS 114, 4.5" reflector? It's a very good starter telescope, provided you get 1.25" eyepieces and not 0.985" eyepieces, and a 30mm finder and not a 24mm finder.4-0 out of 5 stars Best First Telescope
It's a great price. It gives clear views and the objects are very detailed when looking through a high magnification eyepiece.3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a starter scope
I bought this for my daughter who wanted a telescope. I have had a few over the years and know my way around a telescope and the night sky. Over all I like the scope, especially at the price. It could use better eye pieces and a the finder scope that comes with it is a pain. I plan on buying more eyepieces and replacing thefinder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Scope
I've seen alot of negative reviews on this telescope and all I can say is:I absolutly love it.True, it isn't the best telescope as far as observing deep sky objects or even some of the planets. But it isn't usless as some claim.I have been an amatuer astronomer for well over 25 years and have uses a variety of telescopes.Yes, through some scopes the details of planets are better and can see galaxies and nebula more clearly, but this is my favorite telescope so far (until I can afford a bigger one).4-0 out of 5 stars the best money I have spent and the many $$$$ i spent later.
I got this telescope for no particular reason. I had no interest in Astronomy or any thing closely related to star gazing. My back-ground is banking and investments. However, I bought it to start a new hobby. Low and behold, My free time began to disappeared and i was a full-fledge convert of the star-gazing cult. to make it simple it is a great gadget to pull your leg but no a particularly good piece. The software that comes with it is exceptional and indispensable.

1-0 out of 5 stars It struck me with awe at first, then with ugh...
After several hundred dollars, I've discovered that this telescope is pretty much useless. An avid star gazer, I would have been better off purchasing the cheapest model at the local department store. I was sold on the idea of the "auto finder" but after reading the instructions and following them. The auto tracker still does not prove worthy. What a piece of junk. The nice thing about it is you can see the moon - oh...and it looks like a really cool telescope....ugh! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner or casual celestial observer!
This is not the best telescope on the market, but for the price, you definitely can't go wrong. I was amazed at the quality and clarity. With the 9mm lens, you can easily see the rings of Saturn as well as the clouds of Jupiter. With the purchase of a stronger lens and even a magnifier, you are able to get even more definition of celestial objects including but not limited to planets, nebula, and lunar craters. If you are a beginner, or just enjoy the night sky as I do, this is a great way to enhance the experience and maybe learn something along the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK - but better scopes available in the same price range
While not a bad scope, it shows signs of cost cutting. The finder and the 9mm eyepiece are awful - I replaced the 9mm eyepiece as soon as possible. The mount is not as stable as it should be for medium to high powers - I found it was hard to find focus due to the jiggling of the image. The electronic controls are fine but really don't offer any benefit over manual slo-mo controls available on many scopes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good value for the money

We bought this telescope for our son's 9th birthday to keep him happy and occupied while his dad sets up our more advanced telescope. In particular, we wanted a telescope that he could use easily on his own.Set up was a breeze, and we were amazed at the clarity of what we were able to see on a rather hazy night in a fairly light polluted area.Jupiter with its bands and moons were clearly visible as were the rings on Saturn.Though it comes with electronic controls and will work with the Autostar, our son enjoys positioning the telescope manually which he found easy to do.This is a perfect beginner telescope! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Telescope Invented Since Galileo's!(pun- pun!)

I want to be an astronaut when I grow up, but for now I am just an astro- nut!Thebrilliant pictures this telescope portrays are very clear in focus, and themagnification is great. I was looking at the full moon once, in thetelescope, and I almost felt like I was actually on the moon! Thanks to mysister for having such a good friend, and to Meade for making such a goodtelescope! Buy it today! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Meade 114EQ-DH4 4.5-inch Equatorial Starfinder Reflecting Telescope is one of the finest telescope values available anywhere. The Meade optical system includes a superb, hand-figured parabolic primary mirror constructed from low-expansion, fine-annealed Pyrex glass. The mirror meets the theoretical limit of resolution for its aperture and is matched with an elliptical flat secondary mirror of appropriate minor axis. This high-quality construction maximizes performance and is sure to deliver crisp, clear images of your favorite celestial bodies.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair scope, but needs work.
First off I bought this scope used with the intention of reviewing it, and of course using it. The short version: If you looking for a telescope that will give you good views of the planets, and beyond, look elsewhere unless you want to spend extra on better eye pieces and in the long run spend even more on a new focuser, and better finder scope.
