Shaky...
Neat terrestrial scope for 80 bucks, terrible if you want to look at anything farther than the moon. Blame it all on the shaky table top tripod. You finally get something centered in the large eyepiece, you carefully remove it and go for the gusto, the tiny 4mm .965" eyepiece. Plop it in, and the object is gone. You very carefully pull on the tripod and slowly drag a leg, searching for Jupiter again, but it is long gone. The mount is not equitorial so you need to adjust both azimuth and elevation (which are backwards when you are trying to look for something, not real easy for a beginner)to try and get a body in view. The spotting scope is marginal in its ability to stay aligned with the tube. All this in a Celestron? How about a rebadged Tasco "Comet Chaser". And collimation, how about no primary mirror adjustment. Granted there is a cell back there but it is behind the mounting screws, you need to remove the mirror to attempt any collimation beck there. As for the secondary, there are 3 2mm allen screws that can collimate the secondary mirror, but it is a delicate balance between the philips screw that holds the mirror and the adjusters. I was never able to get the entire primary mirror to be reflected in the secondary, but that may have something to do with the hybrid focuser lens that gives you 600mm from an 11 inch tube. This got me into astronomy and Im ready to get a 6 inch Baytronix w/ EQ mount for 159 on Epray. Anyone ever see a T mount for a .965 eyepiece?

Avoid this scope
As much as I hate to say it, avoid this telescope.I bought it expecting very little, and was still disappointed.In it's defense, it is a small, very portable scope.Also, if it broke, I wouldn't be heart-broken.Also, it isn't too bad for showing kids about different types of telescopes.It also isn't too bad to look at the moon with, but I recommend buying a moon filter.And, you can see the rings of saturn in the scope, which quite honestly is almost worth the $99 price tag, despite all the flaws.And this scope has a lot of flaws.Just looking at the box, I know I'm going to be disappointed.Lots of cool pictures of planets and galaxies that I know will never be seen in this scope.Set up was quite easy, but without even looking through it I notice that the cheap high power eyepiece might as well be thrown away.The low power eyepiece is fairly good, however.The single arm mount was a neat idea, but unfortunately the thing vibrates like a tuning fork anytime you touch it.Looking through the scope, the optics need some adjustment to correct flaws, and this is a routine matter with reflector scopes, but there is no way to correct this scope easily, and no instructions on how to do so.Buying a better medium power eyepiece and moon filter helped considerably into making this a usable instrument, but then the final flaw really kicks in...unless you're really, really short, be prepared for significant back strain.You have to either get on all hand and knees, or carefully lean over whatever table you put this on to see through it; if you touch the scope or the table, forget about looking through it due to excessive motion (like most scopes, but this one has a "table top" mount). Not the best choice

One was that Tasco brought a large cash influx to Celestron that finaiced the development and production of a number of excellent new scopes, like the Nexstar series. Good Telescope but the tripod is cheap and weak!!
Alternatives:
bad choice for a beginner or intermediate observer
I enthusiastically purchased this telescope.The images with the 20mm eyepiece that was supplied with the scope were fine (50x magnification), but every attempt to increase the magnification resulted in blurry images.I tried a Televue 17mm, University Optics 12mm, Celestron Ultima 12.5mm, Meade Research grade 7mm ortho eyepiece, all great eyepieces, but the images quality was poor. Very good telescope package for the advanced beginner
The Celestron C150-HD is a nice, solid scope for the serious beginner. I was happily pleased with the production and optic quality of this scope, since this particular model is made in China and there have been issues with China-built scopes in the past. However, I found all the parts and components to be very high quality for this price range. The tube is a painted metal tube, not pressed paper/particle board. This helps decrease the time to come to ambient temperatures, and has less potential for water damage or crushing. The mount is nice and smooth, and I've found it to be a very stable platform. Yes, it probably could be another 5-8 pounds heavier, but I have not had any issues regarding stability or shakiness at all. Read more

Terrible quality
First off, my scope came with a defective part: The pan handle was bent where it attaches to the mount, making it wobble when loosened or tightened. This also may have been the cause of the scope's major flaw: When the scope is pointed up, the mount can't support the weight and it slowly drifts upward. The tri-ocular holder is useless because when any adjustments are made, the scope moves out of alignment. The finderscope (viewfinder) mentioned in the other review is NOT right side up nor built in. Almost the only metal parts are the telescope tube, tripod legs, and eyepieces. The rest is flimsy plastic.
great scope within it's aperture and alt-azimuth mount limitations
I've been using this scope for over a month. For viewing the moon without having to buy and use a moon filter it's possibly the best scope on the market. It gives better resolution of mars than 80 mm. scopes. All the way out to saturn it's possibly the best scope in it's price range for children and beginners. The alt-azimuth mount does have a built in limitation for astronomical viewing but this scope with a built in right side up viewfinder is a great scope for hiking and backpacking with and doing great canyon and mountain views. goto where ?
After receiving this scope .I read the instructions and understood them. The goto feature is not difficult to figure out.So I had no problems there. I have never been able to see any neb. or gal. Nothing but the usual boring venus and jupiter. The moon of course. This scope although expensive is no better than my dept. store telescope. What good is goto when you getthere there is nothing to see. Star test was excellent so it doesnt need collimation. DO NOT BUY ANY SCOPE WITH LESS THAN 8inches of apeture. And you can take that to the bank!!!

What I see through this scope
I originally ordered the Nexstar 80 GT because I wanted to see the bands of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn during winter of 2001-2 while those planets were high and bright. Before it shipped, an astronomer friend suggested that I save [price] on a 5" or 8" scope by not buying that one. So I bought the Nexstar 5 instead. Overall, I am very happy with it, but now I wish that I had saved [price] on an 8" or 10" scope by not buying the 5". Compact and easy to use.
Small enough to throw in the trunk of your car, sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of stumbling around the backyard in the dark, the Nexstar 5 offers fine viewing and ease of use for any beginner that does not have the time or the attention span to learn the locations of many celestial objects. ...
