1-0 out of 5 stars **NOT** a birding binocular or a birding camera
As a birder who has owned quality optics (i.e., Bausch & Lomb Elite, Swarovski, Kowa, and Leica), in my opinion the Celestron VistaPix pales in comparison. It feels and performs more like a toy than a quality binocular - which is not too surprising given the approx. $150 price tag.4-0 out of 5 stars Nice binoculars with the added bonus of a camera
First off, these are a quality pair of binoculars. They fold up nice and small and fit into the included nylon pouch along with the USB cable and neck strap. They swing open to adjust for interpupilary distance, and then are focused using the barrel adjustment on the top of the unit. There is a diopter adjustment that would come in handy if your vision is different in each eye.Looking through the lenses shows nice full circles of light, belying the quality prisms within. The digital camera features seem to be a bit of an afterthought;1.3 mega pix is a bit wimpy for a main camera by today's standards, but that said photos can come out pretty nice with some practice and understanding of the limitations. It is difficult to hold the binoculars steady enough to take a sharp photo over long distances, so you will have to brace yourself or lean on something. There is a screw adaptor on the base of the unit to accept any common camera tripod. The controls are very simple, and after a few minutes it is easy to learn to operate them without looking so you shouldn'thave to fiddle with the camera while trying to focus on yoursubject. The camera will not pick up enough light to take good photos at night;that is to say that the resulting photo will not look as good as what you saw with your dark-adjusted eye. These should be perfect for daytime terrestrial photography however. The SD card and camera are mass-storage compliant, and came up without a hitch on Mac OS X, Win XP, and Redhat 9.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite solid enough for non-mini spotting scopes
First off, the technical details are wrong for this entry which seem to be for a full size Celestron tripod. This unit actually measures 14 inches folded, 10.5 inches with the legs opened and stretches up to 14 inches high with the center column raised. The legs themselves do not telescope. A plastic collar can be tightened to lock the column height and still allow it to turn for panning. The collar can be tightened further to completely lock the column from panning. A knob can be tightened to lock the tilting. A 1/4-20 screw with locking nut allows the attachment of a camera or spotting scope though the rubber used to keep the scope from twisting seems to allow some unwanted vibration. The unit is constructed of plastic and aluminum. The legs are extruded aluminum channel but fairly rigid and connect to an hard plastic base. The fine motion controls do not allow full rotation or tilting but this is not a major drawback and is to be expected for something in this price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner scope!
I bought this scope for an amazing bargain of just $30 at a Christmas tree shop. I had readlot about it and was sure that it was a great buy. As soon as I brought it home I took it out of the box and gasped in awe. It was a high quality peice that looked great. This model has an equatorial mount so you can synchronize it with the celestial pole(poloaris) and it gives you the ability to track objects across the sky.It has a large solid tripod that can be adjusted easily. The two lenses it comes with can magnify objects either 45 or 125 times. When I first took the telescope out with my dad we found the moon and I was amazed at what I could see on the lunar surface at just 45 times magnifacation! The moon took up nearly the entire field of vision at lowest magnifacation and the detail was amazing!Using the other lens was even better I could see craters the maria and all sorts of amazing things. Just a few days ago I used my Night Sky magazine(which is a great magazine by the way) and was able to find Saturn for it is high in the sky right by the beehive cluster and close to Gemini right now. After a few minutes of searching through the low power eyepiece I found it. A bright blob of golden light in the eypiece.Hands trembling I carfully adjusted the focusing nobs and I saw it. Saturn in all its glory was in my eypeice. I could just make outthe rings and though it was small it was clear and sharp. I hurredly popped that lens out and put in the more powerful one and I saw Saturn in even more detail. I could see the Cassini division! Fortunetly the atmosphere was coraperating so I could see somthing most would need a large reflector to see. I was amazing and I could see it with so small a telescope. And in my Night Sky magazine it says in the March/April issue that you can see nebulae, galaxies, clusters and amazing things in just low magnifacations such as 30 or 50 times. I can even see M41(the beehive cluster) in just binoculars! I sawthat cluster when I was looking for saturn. So if you see this telescpope even at 50 or a 100 dollars buy it and you wont be disapointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Free with the Skymaster Binoculars I ordered.
A tripod adapter is ment to keep binoculars "vibration" free on your tripod as to resolve shakey vision. This adaper apears strong in the hand, but when I attached my 15x70 binoculars to it, I realized that under its weight, the plastic becomes less stern and bends. The slightest touch to the binoculars will send them rotating left and right on the bending adapter. To "resolve" this, you have to keep your zygomatic bone (and the rest of bone surrounding your eyes) on the eye cups to keep the binoculars steady when viewing (or grab the binoculars, which was the tripods purpose). I know this was free, but I now need to go buy another tripod adapter, perhaps one made of metal, to properly support my binoculars. ... Read more
