Editorial Review

I love bargains, so I was eager to try out Celestron's new Powerseeker 114 Newtonian reflector telescope. With its 4.5-inch mirror, Celestron's Powerseeker 114 gathers three times more starlight than popular 60mm refractors. The Powerseeker package includes two eyepieces (K20 and SR4), a plastic 3x barlow, and a lightweight equatorial mount. Read more

Features

  • Affordable telescope for beginning astronomer; portable yet powerful
  • All-glass optical components with high transmission coatings for enhanced image brighness and clarity
  • Newtonian optical design with a 114mm aperture and 900mm focal length
  • Equatorial mount for tracking the sky
  • Includes 3x Barlow Lens (1.25"), 20mm eyepiece, 4mm eyepiece, aluminum tripod with accessory tray

4-0 out of 5 stars A good value for the $$
I bought this scope as a b-day gift for my hubby who has never owned a telescope before. It was fairly simple to put together, and we found the directions to be very helpful and accurate.
1-0 out of 5 stars There are better scopes
My recent Christmas experience with the Celestron Powerseeker 114EQ, my first "real" telescope, was a great disappointment. The assembled telescope looked very impressive but functioned poorly. It came without a detailed instruction manual making it difficult to set up, balance, and aim even for a mechanically inclined novice. The plastic finderscope was very cheap, blurry, and hard to align with the main scope. The "equatorial" (EQ) mount knobs moved the scope with jerky motions at times and the scope itself seemed a bit vibration prone on its tripod. Stellar images were blurry and unimpressive (possibly due to mirror misalignment in shipping and/or manufacturing defect) thus other individual scopes may do better than mine in this category. Newtonian reflector type telescope mirrors go out of alignment ("collimation") fairly easily and this scope came without instructions for how to realign them. I returned the telescope within the 30 day refund period and am looking for a better quality and sturdier one like the highly praised Orion Skyquest series or possibly the smaller and more portable Edmund Scientific Astroscan.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginning scope.
I received this telescope for Christmas and I must say after waiting two nights to use it I am impressed. My first target was M42 Orion's Nebula and the K20 eyepiece gave me a mesmerizing view of this amazing stellar nursery. The mount does have some shakiness to it but, it's nothing that can't be overlooked.I have the updated scope so it came with a metal focuser which is a big plus. The 3x Barlow is okay with the 20 but is useless with the 4 as is the 4mm eyepiece itself. If you are thinking of getting a more expensive scope of this size I recommend getting this and buying a 25mm Plossl eyepiece and a 2x Barlow and possibly a 7.5mm eyepiece (planetary and moon viewing) for the extra money you would spend on a more expensive scope. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Solid Altazimuth Tripod
All metal construction (except for the knobs) make this a solid mount for a small to medium sized scope. I found very little problem with vibration using a C90 spotting scope at high powers. The sliding 1/4-20 mounting screw allows the scope to be balanced properly. The 1/4-20 adapter also appears to be removable in order to use scope rings or other mounting methods. The fine adjustment knobs offer limited range but precise adjustments for aiming a scope under high power or for tracking distant objects. The fine adjustment knobs are also connected by cables minimizing vibrations and a possible source of misalignment.
2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the user manual?
I agree with the two previous reviewers. There needs to be a user manual and there isn't one.The fine adjustment will adjust the vertical angle maybe 15 degrees. This isn't very helpful for star gazing. The maximum height of the tripod is only 45 inches. This is an uncomfortable height for looking through binoculars while standing. Celestron should have a users guide showing how their tripod and binoculars are supposed to work together.

1-0 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods
On reciept of the tripod, I found it wrapped and packed (on the outside)in a manner that should have insured an undammaged product. When I opened the box, I found a tripod that looked like it had been run over by a fork lift and then thrown into the box. There was minimal packing around the tripod itself, mostly just nylon bags to prevent scratching, and nothing to keep the unit from being tossed around.I have to wonder about the quality control prior to shipping. Also, if you are not familure with how to assemble and work this type of tripod you will be better served with a different model or company, instructions are not part of their package. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Charger hard to repair
I have a 7 Ah unit and have been using it for years. Not bad for what it is -- after all, deep down it's just a 12V lead-acid battery. But one fine day it just stopped charging. At first I thought the battery was dead and so I went to Radio Shack and bought a new one for $15.It isn't hard to replace and all the lights lit up and everything, but still no charging. Then I did what I should have done in the first place -- measured the output voltage of the 15V power adapter. No voltage to speak of. Then I tried to repair the adapter itself but it turned out that one needs a screwdriver with a triangular tip to open the protective cover of this thing!!No hardware store in my area (and I checked quite a few) had such an outlandish screwdriver. For that matter, I couldn't find a replacement either. It is hard to find a 15V adapter; most power supplies out there are 6, 9, or 12 volts. In summary, I'm left with a functional main unit and no easy way to charge it up.So, buyer beware: if something stops working you may well have to buy a brand new one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential gadget for large electronic Telescopes
I used my Power Tank (17Amp version) for a whole year. After many months of bad weather, I stored it away with my Telescope. Six months of unattended storage were enough to kill the battery. I should had read the manual before putting it away for so long. These tanks need to be recharged at least once a month in order to preserve the cell inside. These power tanks contain a sealed dry 12Volt battery cell inside. One can probably replace it, but it in my case, the cost for the 17amp version is roughly $40 plus the risk of installation. I decided to get a new Power Tank 7Amp version because it is more than enough for my Telescope (Meade LX200GPS). In conclusion, the power tank is a must have for large 12Vdc telescopes, but one must take very good care of charging it at least once a month in order to get maximum lifetime of the product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent power for field use
This battery unit has been usefull to me in the field as long as I don't use a dew zapper for too long (more that 4 hours).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grab one while they last!!!
I have been using these Binocs for about 6 months now and find them a genuine joy everytime I bring them out. On a recent autumn eveningfrom a hotel balcony overlooking a golf course I was able to take in a marvelous variety of deep space objects. The sky was fairly dark- but by no means out in the country- and I saw the beauty of M4, M8, M20, M26, M16, M13,M31, M27,... and more. These are definitely Astro binoculars. They do need a tripod. You focus each eye individually. And there is some fade out in sharp focus as the eye reaches the outer edges of the field of view. This is not something I get worried about for $250. Maybe $1250. I have a Sunpack heavy duty photo tripod that goes for about $80 at Best Buy, andI use the Sunpak adapter to attach the Celestron. It is NOT the sturdiest set-up, but I found that I put the tripod into some very warped positions (one leg sometimes) and walk it around for better views. I can fit the entire Plaeides into the FOV andthe view of the Orion Nebula shows nearly the entire swrd. Glorious!! And one more thing- because the eyepieces focus individually, you don't have to worry about collimation issues. I had ordered a Skymaster 15x70mm that were so out they gave me a headache to look through them. I did get another pair, however, and they were fine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Celestron Big Binoculars
A great value. These binoculars were great for terrestrial viewing as well as astronomical. The view was very clear, edge to edge. My only gripe is the individual eyepiece focus. With several people looking through these during the day, the focusing got to be a pain
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't spend too much for an expensive tripod
It is a good binocular for the money. I have a 4 inch telescope also, but this bino has wider angle and is easier to stargaze. When both eyepieces are set on a wider view, I am getting double vision. Maybe my eyes, or out of collimation. When eyepieces are closed where you only see one circle with both eyes, then there is no problem. However, the most important thing to know is that you must have a heavy duty tripod. If I had researched in advance that a heavy duty tripod is a real must for this bino, I wouldn't buy it. Because those tripods can cost more than the binocular. After researching and testing the tripods at the photo shops, I finally bought "Slik Pro 700 DX" tripod on the net for $140.It was indeed a good decision. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy mount
I've used the mount with a full size SLR and several lenses. A 70-400mm zoom lens is probably heavier than the mount was designed for, but I've gotten some good night shots using long exposures with it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Car Tripod
The Celestron Car window mount worked beyond my expectations. Not only is it a very stable holder for binoculars, but it also can serve as a dolly for your home video cameras. The shots I've got look great!
2-0 out of 5 stars Mounting plate problem.
I purchased this window mount and itlooked OK until I attempted to mount the plate on the camera. The one I received has a plastic folding handle on the camera plate mounting screw that is wider than the recessed area under the plate. Rather than ship it back I cut away the shoulders in the recess to provide room for the screw to turn.( Couldn't alter the handle as it has a metal pin that holds it to the screw) Then when the handle is folded down I have to use a screwdriver or knife to fold it back up as it fits so tightly in the recess that I cannot access it with my finger. The rest of it seems to work OK. ... Read more

The Celestron 93623 Narrowband Oxygen III 1.25-inch filter is a remarkable advance for the serious visual observer of emission nebulae. One of the biggest advantages of narrowband filters is that by passing only the light emitted by nebulae, light from artificial sources like street lights is blocked.
