1-0 out of 5 stars Panasonic PV-L354 - NO SOUND is no good!!
I, too, thought this was an excellent camcorder for several months until I did a playback of one of those events that can't be repeated and....NO SOUND!! The video looks great, but...NO SOUND!! It had worked fine on several occasions and even now, I can shoot a quick video and check to make sure there is sound on the playback before I shoot the important moment I want to capture. Then I shoot the main event and, again, NO SOUND!! Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't...very unpredictable. I thought it was operator error on my part until I saw Mark Noll's review.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Product
We bought this camcorder because we were going on Vacation to Disneyland and our other camcorder would not work. This camcorder is so much better than our other one was. When ever you moved the old camcorder to get various shots, it had to refocus, which took a few minutes. This one does not need to refocus. This camcorder is a little bit heavier than our old one, but it is easier to use. And the better quality makes up for the weight difference. This is a very good product and I will recomend it to a lot of people.

4-0 out of 5 stars For The Price You Can't Beat It!
I am from the old school. So I not only loved the VHS recording format, but if I wanted to dip into modern day technology the photo feature on this particular model will allow me to. Compared to other camcorders under $250 the picture isn't as great but good enough! Remember you get the best of both worlds with this one!! It's easy to use and it's cheap!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this camera!
Well, I just read other reviews and I was surprised!First of all, I had a USB cable that fit the camera and plugged into my computer, so I didn't have that issue.I'm sure I would've been frustrated as well if I had to go purchase one.Personally, I was able to edit and create movies on my computer with no problem, using the free software that came with my computer (Sony VAIO, 3 years old).So I guess maybe I was lucky, but I have had a very good experience with this camera. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the picture quality on my movies isn't the greatest. This camera is a little outdated though, so I can't complain.Plus, for the price, it has been outstanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars PC connection issue rears it's ugly head
I've had this camera for 2 years now and for the price it has done alright.Recently though, just as someone had mentioned in an earlier review, it stopped connecting to my PC via the firewire.I plugged in a friends JVC and it worked fine, so I know it's not the computer or the cable. Its past warranty obviously... I don't think I'll pay to have it fixed.I just wish this would have lasted longer.Time for a better one - this time made in America !

5-0 out of 5 stars Camera Rocks !!
For the price this Camera Rocks !! I've had it for close to 2 years and for the price it's awesome.. I've used it to video tape Basketball and Football games .. Just an outstanding value.. The battery last at least over an hour .. Picture quality is great .. Check out some of my video at www.pleasantgrovesports.com .. Go to either Basketball or Football links .. click J.V. and then one of the kids last name for a short video clip..

1-0 out of 5 stars Fine initially but failed after 6 months
This camcorder was purchased as a gift for my daughter and used about 12 times over a 6 month period before experiencing intermittent failures. The labor warranty on this unit is only 90 days and labor costs for repair approach the original cost. It is unconscionable for Panasonic to market a defective product like this. This reflects poorly on their other products and unless they address this issue with me, I will avoid their products and advise others to avoid their products as well.I might chalk this up to one defective unit if I hadn't read other accounts of the same issue. This is a manufacturing or design defect that has not been addressed by Panasonic.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST of it's class!
I researched camcorders for 4 weeks straight before deciding upon this Panasonic. It has all the features (LCD screen, built in light, best optical zoom-focus available 26x, 150x digital zoom, remote, digital fades, titling, image stabalization...the list goes on! ) of other qualitycamcorders, only at half the cost!We absolutely LOVE this camera!Myonly concern was that is was VHS-C, as opposed to 8mm...BUT that isdefinately not a concern anymore. The picture quality of this PanasonicVHS-C is outstanding, and has great sound too!Another awesome feature isyou don't have to hook up your camera to your tv or vcr everytime you wantto watch what you taped (like the 8mm camcorders...ugh!)....this Panasoniccomes with the VHS-C adapter tape cartridge the you just insert into yourVCR like a regular VHS tape. All you do is push PLAY!If you've beenlooking for a quality camera but don't want to fork over tons ofmoney....this is definatlely your BEST bet!

4-0 out of 5 stars A camcorder easy enough for Grandma
Very good camcorder for those looking for less buttons, easy to use and great results. The LCD screen is great for recording yourself and with others, knowing you got the shot you wanted and those tri-pod shots todifficult looking through a view finder. A movement activation option forthose who what to see what goes on while their away is rather cool. Itworks so well in low level light, we haven't used the built-in light sourceyet. A camcorder you don't have to carry a manual around and with thequality of those you do.

I have purchased this handycam and I find that the videos/picts cannot be loaded onto the system (p.c) through the usb port. When I asked the seller (I am in India,as is the seller) about it,he said that a "DIGITAL POWERSHOT DISKETTE FOR PANASONIC PVL 453.?Could anyone let me know if such a thing is available in the U.S?If so how do I procure it?

I had bought this camera at sears a few years ago. it works pretty good, i have never had a problem with weird noise, or bad picture or anything, the only bummer is if you want a camera that is easy to be able to transfer your video to disk, then this is not the camera for you, but if you prefer tapes its pretty good, and you can get the tapes from wal-mart, so all in all its a fairly good camera.

My wife purchased the camcorder for our trip to Europe. I'm 60 and have never used a camcorder. I prefer still pictures. I tried the video and the pictures and sound were crisp and true. The still pictures were very good. I found the camcorder easy to use and it gave good results for a new video maker. I would recommend buying it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The PV-D301 is successor to Panasonic's PV-D300. The upgraded lens boosts the optical zoom to 20x, and can move from wide-angle to telephoto in under two seconds. The PV-D301 also improves upon the fader system, with color digital fades. Unbelievable low-light sensitivity allows recording down to 0.8 lux, to catch those evening games or parties with clarity. The camera can be programmed to record at lengths of 10, 20, or 30 minutes at a time, or until the tape is exhausted. The camera also integrates the EIS system, or electronic image stabilization, to help compensate for unwanted shaking when the camera is fully zoomed. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners AND experts.
A very nice hand-held camcorder, with more 'bells and whistles' than a comventional camcorder. When camcorder is turned off, a lens protective gate closes, minimizing dust and damage. Auto shut-off after 5 minutes if camcorder is not used. The built-in light has three settings: On, Off, and Auto. Motion detector mode can act as a security camera. Flip-out-and over color LCD screen is handy when holding camera above crowds to video tape stage performances, etc. Built-in speaker acts with LCD screen for accurate, immediate checking of taping. Easy to use for all. Only drawbacks: Maximum tape length is 90 minutes in SLP mode, and auto focus has some trouble in certain circumstances (which are few). Manual focus wheel (conveniently mounted below lens)compensates in most circumstances. Using LCD screen or built-in light drains battery quicker. Use the conventional B/W viewfinder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works good for the money I spent on it!!
This is probably one of the best electronics I have bought in a while, the only complaint I have on it is you need good light to take pictures or video tape anything, otherwise it comes out fuzzy and slightly blurry. It works great other than that. I already have transfered about 300 pictures onto my computer and have enhanced and printed them out.I would like to have something smaller to take pictures but I am happy w/ what I have until I get some extra $$$ to spend on a small digital camera.

First let me say that i didn't buy this camera from amazon.com but from wal-mart.After purchasing this camera it wasn't a week after using it and the focus would blur out after extensive use..So needless to say i returned the camera to the store and got a 2nd.Ahh just to learn that the cassette door wouldn't stay shut when i tape was in place. So i returned it and got a 3rd one to think it would be a charm right?..Not! 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
I bought this video camera 5 years ago. let me tell you, it is still working great. I have never had problems with it. I thoight I might need a new updated version, but I didnt. I went to my daughters play in school. I ended up sitting in the last row. I thought that the video would be bad.... that I was too far away. but The video came out fine...I was able to zoom into her little face. Poor thing.....she was in the back where they put the not so good performers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD ENTRY-LEVEL VHS-C CAMCORDER FOR THE PRICE
I purchased my Panasonic PV-D300 less than a week ago, so this is a review of my initial impressions.I'll let you know in 3 to 6 months what I think of it then. It's an inexpensive and easy-to-use entry-level unit.I had it up and running less than 2 hours after I got it home.In the time it took for the initial battery charge, I was able to digest the easy-to-readinstructions and play with the controls enough to be fairly comfortable with it right when I first popped in a tape and started it up. The controls are convenient, well-placed, and easy to use. The displays in the viewfinder are helpful without being obtrusive. The camera focuses well in all modes and re-focuses quickly after zooming in or out. the picture quality is very good for a camera in this price range.the sound quality isn't great but it's acceptable. Rewind and playback thru the viewfinder is a bit slow, and of course lacks audio, but not a major problem, and a good way to preview what you've just shot. The play-pack provided to use the VHS-C tape in a standard VHS machine was easy to use. Thus far (knock on wood) I've had no humidity-related problems like I saw in the review from Texas, and I live in Florida where high humidity is a fact of life. My only complaint so far is that the battery didn't seem to hold a charge as long as I thought it would, so (a word to the wise) get a spare battery when you buy the camera, and keep it charged and close by.Otherwise, you may be in the middle of taping something important and the thing will very quickly go dead on you. Naturally, this camcorder lacks some of the refinements and gimmicky options of high-end units, but it's a good deal if you're just starting out and just want to shoot some reasonably decent home movies. It's compact, light-weight, and easy-to-use.Hopefully, it will also prove to be reliable and not need frequent repairs since I opted out of the fairly expensive extended warranty/maintenance agreement the store offered with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Competent Performer
We have found this camcorder to be a competent performer that is generally easy to use and takes good pictures. So far we have used it in the cold air of the Sierra Nevadas and the relatively humid, warm air of Houston without any problems. One unusual omission is its lack of an earphone jack; one can only monitor the audio by playing the tape back through a TV or some other monitor. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Broke 3 months after warranty was up!
I finally have a place to discuss my terrible dislike of this camcorder and service from Panasonic. We bought this camera 3 years ago and it never worked right from the start. One of the reasons we bought it was for the built in digital camera.Well my 2 year old son could draw a picture better than the quality it produces. The interface to my computer to upload the camera never worked right and Panasonic was never able to properly troubleshoot the issue.Well my warranty ran out about 3 months ago (had 3 year warranty) and wouldn't you know that it stopped working.Never dropped, hit or nothing and the day of my son's 2nd bday, I went to put tape in and the thing kept humming and spinning the tape but not recording. Not worth having fixed as I heard terrible things about Panasonic customer service, so I am going to buy a new one now!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK CAMERA BUT THERE ARE SOME BUGS
THIS CAMCORDER REPLACES MY SHOLDER HELD FULL SIZED VHS CAMERA OF 1989 VINTAGE.QUALITY OF VHS TAPED PRODUCT IS OK BUT NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS DIGITAL CAMCORDERS OTHERS IN MY FAMILY OWN.LOTS OF FEATURES, NICE, BUT NEED TO HAVE A GOOD MEMORY ON WHERE TO FIND ALL THE BUTTONS WHEN SHOOTING. STILL SHOTS ARE NOT REALLY WORTH KEEPING AND SHOULD NOT BE A FEATURE WHICH LEADS TO BUYING THIS CAMERA.NEWER VERSION OF THIS MODEL IS THE PV-L751 WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE SAME CAMERA IN ALL RESPECTS.PANASONIC HAS NOT RELEASED UPDATED DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM ME OR XP AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FORCAST A RELEASE DATE IF THEY ARE EVER GOING TO WRITE A NEW PROGRAM.MY CAMERA HAD A DEFECTIVE LCD VIEWER AND HAD TO BE SHIPPED BACK TO ELGIN IL.YOUR COST TO SHIP, THEY PAY RETURN POSTAGE. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good basic camcorder
We just purchased this unit for our new baby girls. We wanted a simple camcorder that was relatively inexpensive that would shoot a good picture. We have been pleasantly suprised on how well the picture quality is.The battery life is pretty good too.So far there is nothing really to say bad about the unit, other than how much the extra battery pack costs. We looked at another unit that you could take digital still pictures with a regular VHS-C camcorder. But after thinking about having to carry it around to just take still pictures, we decided against that.We also considered a digital camcorder.Aside from the higher (and sometimes much higher) price, I wanted to be able to view the output easily and also be able to send it to family and friends. All in all, this is a good basic camcorder at a good price. ... The PV-L850 has a 26x optical zoom (and 300x total zoom) to get you as close to the action as you need, while digital image stabilization helps eliminate jitters due to hand shake. A built-in auto-light helps compensate in low-light situations. The camera can switch from a wide-angle shot to full zoom in two seconds with the integrated Quick Zoom function, and a dedicated five-head system ensures high picture quality at any recording mode. 2-0 out of 5 stars good, but...
I have the PVL-858.I like the camera, loaded with features, but we live on the east coast, and every summer that I try to use the camera, I get the message "Dew Detected" and the thing shuts off automatically. The days are humid here, and I can't use it in the least humidity. What good is a camcorder that is so unreliable?Missed our vacation to Bermuda, and our summers at home and at the beach.ARGH!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great camcorder, but the 750 is very similar
Nice camcorder, but the 750 model is *very, very* similar.The750 is also $ . . . cheaper.4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough new options
Theres no point spending money on the 850 when the 750 is the same thing cheaper ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Camera!
After visiting my father and using his Palmcorder (Same model) I realized I HAD to have one! The ease of this camera is noticable from the first time you pick it up. I have been in the market for a digital camera and a camcorder and was thinking I was going to have to spend LOTSA money for 2 pieces of equiptment. Now, I DONT! This palmcorder is a video camera, web cam, and a digital camera all in one! The ease of the software is great too! The camera is a little on the pricey side, but well worth it when you see what types of pictures it takes! Also, its got a AWESOME zoom on it! The only thing I would say that is negative abut this camera, is where the record button is located. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The versatile PVL353 VHS-C Camcorder has features that you wouldn't expect VHS camcorders to have. The PVL353 comes equipped with a 20:1 optical zoom. This powerful feature acts like a telescope to produce extraordinary close-up shots, superior in clarity to those provided by digital zoom. You can also choose between four zoom speeds, so you can go from a wide angle to full telephoto zoom in 2 to 16 seconds. It also has a 700x digital zoom, which significantly increases the range of video capture when complemented with the optical zoom.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great deal & very easy to use !
I bought this Panasonic PV-L353 for my Girlfriend's Christmas present last year, and it's been excellent. Many great features at a decent price. After my full size RCA movie camera died, I didn't know how well the new compact camcorders from Panasonic would perform, but we have been VERY pleased, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable easy to operate unit. We've never had a problem with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst camcorder I have ever bought.
I bought this camcorder less than a year ago and once again it is not working. This is the second time that something has broken on it.It is not worth the money, buy a Sony.
