Editorial Review

Leica's M7 35mm compact rangefinder camera has been historically renowned for its build quality and outstanding performance, as field-tested by the most demanding photojournalists and avant-garde artists. The lens is built with the Leica M design and has a focal length of 21 to 135mm. All manual operations continue to be present, but this newest update now sports electronic control and operation with an on/off switch that starts it all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Leica's Rangefinder Camera for the 21st Century
The Leica M7 is truly one camera that is long overdue. Without a doubt, it is the finest - and most expensive - rangefinder camera currently in production. Much of what the Leica M7 offers is not revolutionary, but rather, a natural, evolutionary progression spanning nearly five decades since the introduction of the M3, Leica's first bayonet-mounted rangefinder camera. The shutter remains essentially the same as the one found on the M6, but it is far more accurate than its immediate predecessor; it is still a silk curtain shutter, but one that is now electronically controlled, guaranteeing accurate exposures every time. Surprisingly, it is now also quieter than the shutter for the Leica M6. Those familiar with Leicas, especially the M4 and M6, will find the M7 easy to use. However, you may have to carry additional batteries since this camera won't work without them, with the notable exception of two shutter speeds. Otherwise, I regret that this fine camera is truly too expensive for most photographers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Digilux Zoom is a bad decision.
Think of buying the Digilux Zoom? Let me help you make a more informed decision. The Digilux was Leica's first-born in the digital world. While the lens stands up to the Leica name, the body and electronics (outsourced to Fuji) do not. My Digilux Zoom broke TWICE, each time exhibiting the same malfunction with the lens motor. While Leica was very helpful in replacing the camera, I strongly urge you against this purchase. Instead, make a long-term decision and consider Leica's second-born - the new 3.9 mega-pixel Leica Digilux. It stands up to the Leica name and also comes with a 2-year warranty... a nice plus in the ever-evolving world of digital photography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better value than you might think
I was deliberating over this camera or the highly rated Olympus D-360L (slightly lower res), which is generally available for about $300. A friendof mine has the Olympus D-340R. It does seems to do a bit better than myLeica with photos in low-light without flash (as the Fuji MX-1700, which isalmost the same camera as the made-by-Fuji Leica, is supposed to: seeCNET's comparison of the two). However, it came down to design. When willthese manufacturers get a clue and start hiring some decent designers? Whyproduce 1 million Olympus cameras that work great but are externally uglyplastic pieces of junk? It just seems like a waste. Additionally, whenconsidering price, the Olympus takes AAA batteries, so you would want toadd the cost of rechargeable lithium batteries (approx. $35?), plus an ACadapter ($50), so you're looking at $385. Also, the Leica comes withPhotoshop LE, a nice addition, and it's so easy to recharge by plugging theAC adapter right into the camera. Battery life has seemed okay- using itheavily on a trip I would recharge it every other night. My only realcomplaint is that sometimes the camera acts 'smart', deciding thatconditions aren't good (ie camera shake in low-light) and refuses to take aphoto. Annoying. You go digital so you can erase the bad ones, right? Oh,also the flash range is short. In closing, I would compare the Leica to theFuji MX-1700: with prices comparable, I went for the cache of the Leica(it's a little prettier, in my opinion, and easier to hold on to) but theFuji's flash might be better. Also, I highly recommend getting theSmartdisk floppy adapter ($60). You don't have to worry about getting tothe back of your computer to plugs, or plugging in the camera to savebatteries, it's fast, and it's portable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brand Quality & finish
Leica is not popular amongst the American public as being one of theworld's best camera manufacturers. If you are looking for mid-level digitalcamera for family use, i would totally recommend the Leica Digilux Zoom.Easy to use, well designed and excellect results. Definate buy over theFuji MX-1700 !! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely bit of glass
This pair of binoculars clearly lives up to the expectations we have come to expect from Leica. Not as bright obviously as the binoculars of choice the 8x32, but suprisingly close.
3-0 out of 5 stars Leica's Best Compact Binoculars, But....
I know someone who had one for years and recently traded it for a Zeiss Victory compact 8 X 20 which he finds brighter and much easier to focus. It's a recommendation that I strongly second too, since I've own the same Zeiss Victory model for over a year. Regrettably, the Leica Trinovid 8 x 20 falls a distant second with respect to brightness and ease of use. It also doesn't seem to be nearly as sturdy as its Zeiss competitor (Note: I am a great fan of Leica optics, especially those for its M rangefinder system, which are among the best in the world. But unfortunately, the 8 x 20 Trinovid binocular can not be regarded as one of the firm's finest products.). However, if one wants a reasonably priced Leica binocular for outdoor concerts, sporting events, or hiking, then this is the one to get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very rugged
We purchased these binoculars to take along when weight forbade hauling our superb Leica full-sized binoculars, and were quite disappointed with them. Our biggest complaints:Read more
