Bright enough to improve indoor graininess, but not so strong as to annoy the subject.Light is diffused enough not to put a spot in the center, and lights the entire field of view.For digital, nothing beats good room lighting, but this is a viable option for situations where that is not possible.

High quality mid-grade consumer lens
The Canon 24-85 lens is a fantastic lens...as long as you shoot pictures knowing its limitations.The first thing to remember is that unless you want to shell out the money for an "L" series lens, you are not going to get perfectly sharp pictures with the lens wide open (meaning at f/3.5 in this lenses case).You need to step it down to about f/6.3-f/7.1 for the crystal clear pictures.I tried shooting pictures at wide angle while wide open, and I ran into the problems that another reviewer discussed - namely soft pictures.Stepped down, I get pictures that rival the quality of my 50 f/1.8 (aka the "nifty fifty" or "plastic fantastic").It is also very light, and according to numerous reviews I have read, has outstanding center performance.This is a big deal on a crop camera, because it only uses the center part of the lens, anyway.So, if you have a 10, 20, 30, 300, or 350D, this lens should be a winner for you.
Beginners: Good lens but don't buy it!
I bought my first SLR camera about two and a half years ago ( a Rebel K2 film camera with kit lens ) before the birth of my daughter. As I became more familiar with photography and hungrier for better picture quality I bought the very cheap 50mm f/1.8 lens and was impressed by how much better the picture quality was.
not up to specs
I was very disappointed with this lens. It has a very cheap feel and the image quality was terrible. I was only able to test it with my Canon 20d and not with film. I couldn't believe how lousy it was, I had read some other reviews and they seemed positive. I tried it on a tripod and shot a variety of things text and 3-D objects and never could pull a sharp photo. I noticed that I had to use a lot more unsharp mask than normal to be useable. This is a good lens hood, but it comes with the lens so I shouldn't have purchased it separately.The lens info of the lens does not indicate that the hood comes with it.

More fragile than it seems
This cable works fine: no directions needed, and it automatically alerts the computer (at least it does mine: I use Apple's iPhoto) that the camera is plugged in, which means the necessary software is launched without any effort on the part of the user. Super "L" Lens, Price not too Bad Either
There is nothing like a telephoto to bring boats at anchor up close when you're halfway up a mountain. I got a great shot in Tahiti just that way with just this lense and a friend of mine used it on the cover of her romance novel. It's true the lense is heavy. Canon says it weighs 1.7 pounds, but it seems heavier. No matter though, because you won't have to go to the gym if you heft this baby around for awhile, and as a side benifit, you'll get crisper, sharper photos then you would with any other 200mm out there today. Just think of it as body building and photo shooting both at the same time. Also this one won't break your wallet.
An "L" Tele for a reasonable price
Canon L lenses are known for their great optics and priceyness.This fast tele is an excellent value.The only thing that would improve this lens would be the addition of the image stabilizion feature found on a few Canon optics.Of course, the advantage of large aperature lenses is that you can set a fast shutter speed and still have enough light for a shot.This lens is surprisingly compact, (as long focal length teles go).The autofocus is very fast and quiet.Comes with a hood, too.

Someday, we'll laugh at the weight
Remember the cell phones of the 80's?That's what this reminds me of.It doubles the weight of the camera.However, the only other downside is that I now need to carry extra tapes because I can now film EVERYTHING I want and not worry about conserving battery time.I burned through almost 2 tapes (on long play) during a day at Disneyland, used the LCD screen the entire time and even play-back while waiting in a line.

My wife and I bought this for our Optura 2000MC to go on our honeymoon and found this to be very useful for day long excursions. We hardly needed to look at the power bar the whole time. Poor design
Although the lens adapter accommodates the 58mm lens series, it partially blocks the viewfinder view and the flash causing an unacceptable photo. Clearly an Canon caused problem.

Good lens but better options exist
Especially in the Canon line up.Buy the 70-200 F/2.8L at similar price or F/2.8L IS at a bit more, and get a few extension tube (you can get a set of 3 Kenko extension tube for around $170 at 12mm, 20mm and 36mm), you will get a fantastic zoom telephoto lens and a far more versatile package.With the 70-200mm zoom lens, you get all the focal length not just the 180mm.If macro is desired choose an extension tube or any combination of extension tubes, you get so much more choices in focus distance and magnification factor combinations, it's mind boggling. If you go with the IS 70-200mm lens, you get the benefit of the image stablizing when taking Macro as well to reduce the camera shake effect.The combination of the 70-200mm family with a set of extension tubes are a far better choice if local focal length macro photography is wanted.

Big, Heavy, Sharp
When this lens is used with a 1.6X camera body such as the XT, 20D, or 30D it ends up giving you an amazing 288mm Macro or you can go one step further with the 1.4x or 2X TC's and make it a 403/576mm super power.Of course whenever doing this you must either use a tripod or flash except in blazing light.It is a little slow to focus compared to many of the other lenses canon offers, but since you will most likely be using manual focus a lot of the time anyway, this is not a huge drawback.It also gets heavy to carry after a few hours and you will have people ask you questions about both your and their cameras.On a good note parents are pretty good about keeping small children out of your way when you have this lens mounted.The narrower background as compared to the 60mm or 100mm macro lenses makes cluttered areas easier to deal with.The extra working distance is also a plus when working with wary insects etc.It is best to use a shutter release and mirror lockup for shutter speeds longer than 1/30 if you want sharp pictures.The 60mm Macro wins in convenience, but for absolute clarity and improved working distance the 180 comes out on top.

Canon's Best Macro Lens
I spend most of my time as a photographer taking macro photographs of flowers and other small things in nature.I chose this lens over Canon's 50mm macro and 100mm macro for two reasons: (1) it is constructed with higher quality UD glass, so it has great color and contrast, and it's incredibly sharp at all f/stops, and (2) at 180mm, it allows you to stay farther away from your subjects and still focus to 1:1.This makes it easier take photographs without disturbing your subjects and it allows you to have a smaller, more blurry area in the background so that the background doesn't compete with the subject for attention.The lens also comes with a tripod color, which allows you conveniently change from vertical to horizontal, and it adds stability with your lens better balanced on your tripod.

Great for day trips

The problem is not with the product
The previous review is not completely correct. The problem is not with the product but with the description what amazon.com put up for the Canon CPM-E3 Battery Magazine. It is a battery magazine for the Canon Compact Battery Pack CP-E3 and not for the camera battery grip. I think the product itself is a great thing, it lets you switch the whole magazine with 8 preloaded batteries instead replacing the batteries in the Canon Compact Battery Pack CP-E3.
Wrong product!
They tell you tha this product holds 6AA batteries, and works with the 20D's battery grip, but when I received the item it is for a completely different product and DOES NOT WORK with the 20D's BG-E2 grip.It has the product name of CPM-E3, just as stated...but it accepts 8 AAA batteries and doesn't even come close to working with the BG-E2. ... Don't waste your money
Pretty much ditto to what the others below say. Thing looks cheap "the adaptor" and both mounted on my A510 make it look like a bazooka. One thing to remember is when you use the adaptor the flash becomes useless as the adaptor an lens hide about a third of it. "not that you could use a flash at that distance anyway". I also have the widw angle which I personally find alot more usefull for outdoor shots. One more thing to consider, did you buy your cam to be a national geographic wanna be and lug around a bunch of lens/filters etc or have fun taking point and shoot pics with the occansional manual mode ones thrown in?

So-so, and some "bewares"
First off I must say I love my A95. It has the features I want (other than zoom range), plus the rather smallish size is nice after toting 3 SLR bodies and 6 lenses around for years. This telephoto conversion lens is nothing special though, and has some limitations.
