Adventure Book Light and Flashlight Average Customer Review: Accessory (01 January, 1999) list price: $14.95 -- our price: $12.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This ingeniously designed portable flashlight/reading light looks something like a small toy whale. A switch on the back can be used to lock the light in the off position. When unlocked, the light can be depressed to operate the flashlight; when the unit is opened, this same part forms an adjustable lamp. The unitruns on two AA batteries, and when attached to a book, it sheds a reasonable amount of light onto both pages. Also, since the light's underside is flat,it can be placed directly on a desk or table. Although it doesn't quite win the "smallest in its class" award, theNovelist Adventure Book Light and Flashlight is a shoo-in for "most goodfeatures in a very small package." --Richard Farr ... PalmOne V Travel Kit Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When you're away from your home or office, you can charge and synchronize your Palm V handheld without a cradle! Just use our convenient travel kit--it has everything you need to get powered up and stay in touch quickly and easily. The kit includes: an AC recharger with a 3' power cord so you can recharge your organizer's battery from any AC outlet, a HotSync® cable that allows you to connect your Palm V handheld directly to your notebook computer to synchronize your data, and custom-designed plug adapters for UK, Europe and Australia that allow you to recharge your handheld from outlets virtually anywhere.Used with Palm V handhelds. Macintosh users require a Macintosh serial adapter to connect to a Macintosh system through the printer or modem port. Sold separately ... Read more Features Reviews (24)
The only quibble I have is that the kit has a lot of bits to keep track of. A more elegant design would have one cable that connects to the Palm device with the other end capable of plugging into the charger or a sync connector, depending on your needs. That would perhaps enable the charger to have all the various international adapters in one unit instead of loose. Still, it is a valuable accessory and has been worth the cost for me.

Panasonic DVD-LV55 Portable DVD Player Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $899.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For movie buffs, few experiences in life are as rewarding as watchingyour choice of DVDs on a train, plane, or automobile. Heads turn, new friendsare made, and best of all, we have the chance to catch up on our movie watching. The Panasonic DVD-LV55 delivers all of that, with some true state-of-the-artfeatures. Surprisingly slim (especially before the rechargeable battery snapson), the DVD-LV55 easily fits into a briefcase or backpack. As with allelectronics, we suggest you treat it gently--even though the build quality isexceptionally solid. Similarly, the unit can take a good amount of jostlingwithout any compromise in picture or sound. (You can also use it as a portableCD player!) The DVD-LV55 appears to share the same chassis as its biggerbrother, the 7-inch LV75. The extra margin around the 5-inch LCD screen drawseven more attention to the display's slighter stature. The picture is brightand sharp, even on fine details and when viewed up close, which is really theonly way to watch a 5-inch screen. For optimal playback on the built-in 16:9monitor, we recommend watching anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 widescreen movies. However, be forewarned that you will lose a bit of quality on nonanamorphictitles, and 2.35:1 CinemaScope movies, which introduce a black bar at top andbottom, will look really small. You can also connect a video camera toview your camcorder work on the 5-inch screen. The two 1-inch speakers locatedleft and right, just below the screen, are a pleasant alternative to headphonelistening, but their size and design make them inherently limited. While voicesand most higher frequencies sounded just fine, there was no bass to speak of,and loud noises at high volume constantly taxed their limitations. And even thehighest volume is not very loud. The virtual surround sound (VSS) works toexpand the sound stage when using outboard speakers or headphones, and createsthe illusion of rear-channel effects. VSS is quite convincing, and offers twosettings, depending on just how much processing you enjoy. Through a properaudio-video setup, picture and sound are both outstanding, with a crisp, colorful image through the S-Video connection and rich reproduction of bothDolby Digital and Digital Theater Sound (DTS) soundtracks. Technical performanceis as good as most dedicated home theater decks on the market. The slim-lineremote control has 35 soft-touch keys that provide all the functionality you'dexpect from any full-size DVD player. Although the 60-degree signal sensorwindow is a bit narrow, the more than 20-foot range is impressive. All of thebasic functions are accessible on the unit itself, with an innovativedirectional disc in place of arrow keys. The small LCD panel reports systemstatus, including a battery-life indicator. But the single greatest conveniencemight be the marker system for the start-again, stop-again viewing habits of on- the-go folk, who might need to switch off in the middle of a designatedchapter. Although you can get an additional couple of inches in screen sizefor a few hundred dollars more, Panasonic's DVD-LV55 is a great portable moviemachine that offers excellent picture quality, numerous features, and alightweight design that we can heartily recommend. Features Reviews (19)
The LV55 has a screen resolution of 280,000 pixels, which comes to about 700x400 pixels. This is less than the 720x480 resolution that a DVD is able to deliver, but it is enough to give a clear, sharp picture. This player only lets you adjust color saturation and brightness, and not hue and contrast.Using "Video Essentials" and "Avia Guide to Home Theater" to test the display, I find that the display has a slight over-saturation of red, and cannot display certain grey scales (which could cause "dithering" in playing black-and-white movies). Also, the player has some built-in edge enhancement that strikes me as rather excessive, resulting in "halos" appearing around borders. The display also has the common overscan problem, which results in a little bit of picture cut off from the left and right sides of the image.Overscanning is common on most consumer CRT and LCD displays. The built-in speakers produce expectedly tinny sound, considering the player only uses 13 watts of power.A good pair of earphones or headphones is a must, but even so, the advantage of a 5.1 soundtrack is totally lost without 5.1 speakers. There is a "dialog enhancer" feature that raises the volume of the center channel sound, which is useful in a noisy environment. There is also a "dynamic range compression" feature that lowers the volume of loud sound if you feel the soundtrack is too overwhelming. The LV55 is able to play DVD-Video discs with Dolby Digital or DTS sound, audio CDs, and Video CDs (VCDs).Although the manual says it does not play CD-R discs, it does play CD-R discs that are copied from audio CDs and VCDs. The player can also send Dolby Digital or DTS signal to an external DD/DTS decoder's optical input, although you need to obtain a miniplug-to-Toslink cable yourself. It can send its video signal (via RCA or S-Video cable) to an external monitor. It can also receive video from, say, a camcorder, so you can view it on the display. With the battery pack attached, the LV55 weighs 2 pounds and is 1.5 inches thick, which is a little too bulky for me.But I do like the fact that the screen can be flipped open to an almost 180-degree angle, and that the playback is not affected even if I don't hold the player horizontally; that gives me great flexibility in viewing positions.

Corex CardScan Executive with Version 5.0 Software Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Corex CardScan Executive 500 is an ingenious device designed to help you organize all the business cards you acquire into an easy-to-use contact database. Simply stick a business card into the scanner, and the CardScan 500's OCR technology extracts such information as names, e-mail addresses, and company, placing them into your contact manager for easy reference. The CardScan 500 integrates nicely with ACT, GoldMine, Groupwise, Lotus Notes, Lotus Organizer, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Schedule, Sidekick, and other popular programs, while also providing one-touch synchronization with Windows CE and Palm handheld devices. A PC-only device, the CardScan connects to your computer via USB or parallel ports, and can even connect to your digital phone with separately sold Fonesync software and cable. The CardScan 500 comes backed with a one-year manufacturer's warranty. ... Read more Features Reviews (10)
I purchased the unit and followed the instructions for the set up.During the set up, the user must test the unit by scanning a business card into the scanner. My unit would not pull the business card over the scanner.I re-installed the software, tried again without success. I contacted Corex customer service, and was given instructions on testing the scanning device. The results of the test indicated the unit was defective.I was instructed to return the unit, at my expense, to Corex customer service in Germany.I had to pay shipping plus customs clearance fees. After the scanner was 'repaired' it was returned to me.Again, I had to pay customs charges in Thailand.Upon installing the unit, again it would not pull the card through the scanner.Running the same tests, it appeared I had the same or another defective unit. I contacted Corex in the USA, and requested a new system be shipped to me.I received a nice note from Corex customer service with installation instructions, but no acknowledgement of my request. Buy from Corex with caution, they do not support their products.Buyer Beware!
The scanner works well most of the time. With the Auto Scan feature you can set your cards down and, if all goes right, come back later to verify the information. Cards are rapidly read and the images stored until you verify the accurate placement of the card information into the software fields. This leads me to one of the major problems with the CardScan. Understandably it's difficult to account for all business card formats, with the contact info. being placed in all possible ways. Corex has not fully figured out how to ensure placement of the card info. into the software fields. Only about 50% of the time was most of the info. properly placed. Otherwise you'll have to go through and cut and paste into the correct fields. The CardScan does not always cleanly scan the business cards. The software is designed to allow you to compare the scanned image of the card to the fields to which the info. was assigned. Good idea but doesn't work so well. To verify that the card was read properly, you'll have to keep your scanned cards with you. Of course, once it's verified you can put the cards away for good. Two great features of the CardScan: (1) it allows you to scan the back of the business card and (2) you can make your own entries for those cards that are too difficult to read. ... Leatherman 61010103Original Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool with Leather Belt Sheath Tools & Hardware list price: $46.07 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This is the tool that started the Leatherman revolution. Despite the introduction of new and more elaborate models from Leatherman, the Original remains a popular tool. We like the tough, compact design of the Original, as well as the high quality of the blades and tools. The jaws of the pliers are extremely tough. The Original packs a pretty impressive assortment of tools, including wire cutters, a knife, a metal/wood file, a can/bottle opener, an awl/punch, a nice assortment of Phillips screwdrivers, and more--all perfect for quick, on-the-spot jobs. It's true that the big knife blade would be more effective if it faced the other way, and that having to open the whole thing to get at any of the tools is less than ideal (both issues have been addressed in Leatherman's Wave). But it wasn't so long ago that the Original Leatherman was the only choice, and it's still a great addition to any toolbox, remaining just as handy as when it first came out. --Brian Trinen ... Deluxe Travel Scrabble Average Customer Review: Toy US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This compact version of Scrabble, the old-fashioned family favorite, will make a long train commute or cross-country plane journey pass more quickly. The 10-by-11-inch plastic board with its raised squares holds the tiles securely while you play, then folds up to become a neat, sturdy, 6-by-11-inch carrying case for the clear plastic letter racks and the cloth bag of tiles (you can use the bag for drawing letters). The letter racks can fit into the sides of the board if necessary, though they're not obviously meant to do so, making this less of a car or bus game than it might have been; still, it's perfect for train, plane, or boat. Be careful not to drop the tiles, as they're quite a bit smaller than standard Scrabble tiles--but even if you do, good old Milton Bradley will replace the ones you lose. E-N-J-O-Y (15 points)!--Barrie Trinkle ... Read more Reviews (30)
The two sets I've purchased were an older style that used tape as a binding and not interlocking plastic, and let me tell you: both previous bindings are worthless. The plastic is much better. Also, the plastic is plenty durable as long as you're careful and don't get into situations where you could drop it; the plastic works fine. The tiles also don't come out of the grid that easily, but remember: if you make them stay too well, it's a painto get them out again... While I haven't bought it yet (but will soon), the tiles DO lock in place and games CAN be saved. The cushioning around it should also help with durability. Hope this helps!
In this version the grid has raised edges which are meant to keep the tiles in place.Unfortunately, there is still room for the tiles to move around and a high chance of them being displaced if there is a bump or accident during play.I had envisioned the grid being something that the tiles would snap into, thereby avoiding disaster of any kind.Snap-in tiles would also make it possible to save a game in progress and come back to it later.I thought that this was an advertised feature, but I haven't yet figured out how you could successfully save a game and pack it away with the current design. There is a storage space beneath the grid which is very handy for all of the materials, but the way it opens up is cheaply constructed. The plastic separates from the actual grid so that the board and the grid do not match up quite right when viewing.I solved the issue with some scotch tape, but I would have thought the makers could have designed this better. All in all, scrabble lovers will love the game just because they can play it wherever and whenever they want.Just a few construction issues that lowered my rating.
The board folds into a handy travel case, but when unfolded it does not lock down securely. If you are passing around the board to play (such as from the back to front seat of the car), be extremely careful not to accidently cause the board to unexpectedly fold. This is the one defect. There is no timer included, but this is not a big deal. I won't waste time telling you about Scrabble. If you don't know the game, don't purchase the travel version. If you love Scrabble like I do, the travel version is a must. Enjoy! ... Nissan 15.9-Ounce Travel Mug/Food Storage Jar Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $26.00 -- our price: $24.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Virtually unbreakable, this lightweight, vacuum-insulated thermos travels to work or the beach or other recreation spot. On arrival, and for hours afterward, coffee, tea, or soup will still be hot. Or lemonade, pasta salad, or a sports drink will still be chilled. It transports baby food, too. Compact (3-1/2 inches in diameter by 6-1/2 inches high) and handsome, the thermos has a satin-finish exterior and tough, nonslip, black plastic top, bottom, and L-shaped handle. Fine threading ensures the twist top seals tightly. A full-diameter mouth provides handy access to foods, and the smooth interior cleans with sponge or cloth. Preheating or prechilling with hot or cold water is recommended. --Fred Brack ... Read more Features Reviews (11)
In all this time, there are only two drawbacks I can think of.It's diameter, although very stable, it won't fit cup holders in many vehicles. And, if run through the dishwasher, a small amount water will sneak through the little hole in the bottom cover. Not a big deal, but it can dribble out on you while dinking (it can be removed to dry off). Unlike my wife, this travel mug has remained true to me all these years.

Memorex MPD8505CP Personal CD/MP3 Player with 45 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $89.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This shiny little unit is not your garden-variety cigarette-lighter-powered portable CD player, however much it resembles one. No, this player gives you something more: the ability to listen to MP3-encoded CDs, which, when you do the math, works out to far more megabytes for the buck than you'd get in a dedicated MP3 player. Accommodating standard CDs as well as CD-Rs or CD-RWs brimming with MP3 or .WAV audio files, the Memorex MPD8505CP MP3-CD player packs high technology into a low-lying music player, giving you beck-and-call access to literally hours of music from a single MP3-encoded CD. And did we mention that it's far cheaper than any of its name-brand competition? Each of the player's multifunction control buttons is used for standard CD controls like Play, Pause, Skip, or Stop, as well as programming functions such as File/Directory, File Search, Display, and the numbers and letters of the alphabet. That's right--unlike other MP3 CD players, this one shows track and artist information, and lets you add it as well. Unfortunately, the buttons aren't clustered together for ready access, but configured in an eleven-button semi-circle to memorize. Imperceptive controls with multiple functions demand a good study of the manual to guide you through searching and programming. You'll also need to spend some time learning and remembering things like stop" also means "off", and other such hidden functions. It also seems that due to the MP3 chip, start-up time is slower than on standard CD players. After loading a CD, we had to wait at least 10 seconds to be able to play, search, or adjust any of the controls. Meanwhile, the dark LCD display screen remains blank while you wonder if the unit is on or if the CD has been loaded correctly. Then, it takes an additional 10 to 15 seconds for it to play. While not a huge inconvenience, a portable unit for car use should react quickly to minimize the time spent fiddling with it. The DBBS (Dynamic Bass Boost System) offers impressive bass reinforcement. The high end is bright and clear, although you'll hear some hiss with quieter tracks or during music featuring a soloist. A 45-second "electronic skip protection" feature lets you use the Memorex on road trips, bus rides, or brisk walks, though we did experience occasional skips even on relatively sedate bus rides. Memorex includes a complete car kit, a nice convenience. But despite its quirks (and despite its bulky and awkward design), this Memorex piece can be a good way to take music along any journey, long or short--especially when used with a good set of headphones. --Zoe Knight Pros:
Cons: Features Reviews (176)
The car kit that came with mine, though, is a little weird. At times the volume will be too soft for no reason, but mostly they all worked great. The only things I really don't like about this unit are 1) the display LCD isn't backlit, making reading practically impossible at night, and 2) the search option is not very user friendly, and the unit doesn't seem to respond too well to it. Over all, I give it 4 stars, for its price, and that it hadn't died on me yet.
However the skip protection was disappointing from the beginning. Walking caused several skips per song and it would sometimes skip in the car. Don't even think about doing anything more than that with this player; it'll skip like crazy and drive you crazy. The worst thing, though, was that a few months after I started listening to it frequently it broke to the point where it now skips every few seconds when it's just sitting on my desk (with both regular and mp3 CDs). This happened after I had taken it on a few plane rides, so maybe that had something to do with it, although I'm not really sure how. Whatever happened, it's too annoying to listen to now. Despite the nifty search function, I wouldn't recommend this CD player. It's got a lot of flaws and you can probably find something much better.
