Netgear FA-310TX 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Card Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $27.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Whether you're putting together a new network or just need to add a computer to your existing setup, 10/100Base-T Ethernet network interface cards (NICs) are the way to go for home and small-businesses use. The Netgear FA310TX skimps on a few advanced features we've seen with competing cards, but offers a low price that anyone on a tight budget will appreciate. This NIC connects to a PCI slot on the motherboard, so it's quite easy to install. You just turn off the computer, seat the card in the PCI slot, connect the card to your network hub via a cable (not included), and turn on the PC. Windows will recognize the card and ask for drivers, which are supplied on an included floppy diskette. Customers with experience installing modems, video cards, or nearly any other internal PC device should have this card installed and working in under 20 minutes. The FA310TX is a very basic card. Wake-On-LAN is not supported--there isn't even a connecter if you have an extra WOL cable lying around. There are five status lights that show various types of network activity and also let you know when collisions are happening. We didn't have any trouble with this easy-to-install card, and it would make a good choice for anyone looking to expand their network without breaking the bank. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Canon CanoScan N650U USB Flatbed Scanner Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $49.88 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This CanoScan flatbed scanner delivers 600 x 1,200 resolution in a slim package, just over 1 inch high. It uses a single USB cable for both power and data from any compatible Mac or PC. This scanner offers 42-bit scanning with more than four trillion possible colors. It also has an external programmable button for fast, one-touch scanning. Another handy feature is Canon's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top, which allows you to scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Many other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat; the N650U scanner cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts up to 1 inch vertically and lies flat to create extra space. ... Though it runs a little slow, it does make reasonably clean scans, and makes MUCH less clutter on and behind my desk than most other machines, which is why I bought it. People need to know, however, that the lens has crummy depth-of field, which means that anything that is not dead flat against the glass will look fuzzy. My previous scanner could make acceptable images of small three-dimensional objects;this one won't. Also, the color balance is kind of off,too blue-tinged.With my Paint Shop Pro, I need to subtract a little blue and add a little red to the scans to make them look like real life. I assume that both these problems (poor depth of field and color imbalance) come from the dim scanning lamp neccesitated by the low power available to the unit. ... Read more Asin: B00004Y66R |

Hitachi 702HT 5-Piece Home Theater Speaker System Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $199.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Hitachi's 702HT five-piece home theater speaker set is as economicalwith space as it is with price, providing affordable and affable surroundentertainment with decent, natural sound. The video-shielded 702HT comes witheverything you need to hook it up to your 5.1-channel surround receiver, including mounting equipment and lots of speaker wire with presoldered leads foreasy installation. An external powered subwoofer is required to get the full effect of 5.1-channelmovies or music, but even without a subwoofer, this system offers spacious andpleasing sound from five compact speakers. The center-channel speaker is thelargest of the five, as it will be charged with reproducing the bulk of thesound in Dolby Digital, DTS, or televised Dolby Pro Logic programming. The otherfour speakers--left, right, and left and right surround--are identical and comewith pivoting tweeters that let you focus the sound for your prime listeningarea. We're quite impressed with the quality of sound from this little system; itshallmark is distortion-free clarity and surprisingly natural vocal andinstrumental timbres, especially from the center speaker. Don't expect wonders--the bassresponse is limited, and the high frequencies can extend only so farand so sweetly in a budget system. But if you're tight on space and funds, or simply want the enveloping pleasureof surround sound in your office or dormitory, we highly recommend the Hitachi702HT as a peppy entry-level surround speaker system. Pay close attention to phase coherence when hooking up the supplied speakerwire. Since the wire is black, it's not easy to tell which of the two leads iswhich. One is marked with a thin white line, so be consistent about which leadyou join to which terminal at the speakers and at your surround receiver; out-of-phasewiring can ruin surround effects and further diminish your system'sbass response. --Michael Mikesell ... N Sync Average Customer Review: Audio CD (24 March, 1998) list price: $18.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Yes, it's another group of five young white boys making dance-influenced pop that makes the girls scream. Not only is the makeup of this group familiar, their sound is almost a clone of fellow teenybopper dreams the Backstreet Boys. It's probably not surprising, considering that they share the same manager (who had all five members of '80s preteen scream machine New Kids on the Block as the best men at his wedding, natch). The resemblance is a little too close for comfort, however, with almost every track here mirroring one on the Backstreet Boys album. From the radio hit "I Want You Back" and the sugary harmonizing on ballads like "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" to the one step forward, two steps back approach to sex appeal on "Giddy Up," 'N Sync--or their producers--have crafted the perfect balance of catchy pop ditties and swoon-inducing slow jams. --Rebecca Wallwork ...
