5-0 out of 5 stars Xbox system link
I was wondering if anyone knew if this hub would work for linking Xbox's together so you can have more than 4 people play at once. I know that I could link 2 with a crossover cable but I want to link 4 together so that I can have a gigantic 16 player Halo match (It's a very popular Xbox game for those who don't know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful like a light bulb.Until it burns out
Like most consumer electronics these hubs eventually fail in a slow painful death.I believe you can expect around 3-5 years of faithful service before these cost-effective hubs give out.

I wept when the first port stopped lighting up, and only three ports remained working (2 useful for my hw, 1 uplink). But my sympathy for a long-lived product went out the window when the thing got extremely hot and then all the lights went out.

:|It made a resounding thud when it hit the insides of my rubbermaid garbage can.The case is metal and extremely durable.I once used two of these as a monitor stand.

The power cube is still functional, and continues to power my home-built electronic hobbies to this day.

Not a bad product but I'd recommend a 100Mbps / 1Gb hub, and for slightly more money you might as well go with a wireless / wired router or WAP.

2-0 out of 5 stars just for your info
this product is OK for networking under 50 feet, i had the previous version which is the EN104 (NOT EN104tp) with the bnc port, that one work for my home networking, but when i bought this one DONT WORK, called cust support and he said its a diffrent chip inside that couldnt handle that far of a distance, i thought just to let you people know about this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars definately pleased
Well I feel these headphones are GREAT bang for your buck, very pleased with my purchase and honestly thinking of picking up another pair for home use.

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!
Well all I can say is that I thought I was getting a deal but I was wrong, these headphones look and feel great. The sound is another issue though. It's a pretty hollow sound. The bass crackles and treble is low.I should have waited and got some Koss heaphones or something. The other reviews are pretty correct (the one about the bass cracking is dead on!)Consider something besides these wanna be's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Y Cable.Shrug.
Really, what's to scrutinize?A Y cable is a Y cable.I use mine to connect both speakers and headphones to my computer. It works perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Is Cool
This procduct is great for when you want to share the same

music on your cd player or walkman. I have no complaints

i suggest anyone to buy it, it's worth the money..........

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this thing.
I recently bought a new computer and to my dismay the new speakers and subwoofer did not come with a headphone jack. As a result I found myself having to crawl under my desk in order to switch to my headphones. When I came across Koss Y-88 Y Cord splitter I thought... I would give them a try. I am glad to say that they work great. They connect directly to my sound card and the speakers and sub are connected to one of the connector and the headphones to the other. When I want to listen to music or a DVD and not disturb anyone else I just turn off the speakers and put on the headphones. No more crawling to switch them over. It also works great with a stereo or directly connected to your DVD player. ... Read more

Netgear FA-310TX 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Card
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $27.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Whether you're putting together a new network or just need to add a computer to your existing setup, 10/100Base-T Ethernet network interface cards (NICs) are the way to go for home and small-businesses use. The Netgear FA310TX skimps on a few advanced features we've seen with competing cards, but offers a low price that anyone on a tight budget will appreciate.

This NIC connects to a PCI slot on the motherboard, so it's quite easy to install. You just turn off the computer, seat the card in the PCI slot, connect the card to your network hub via a cable (not included), and turn on the PC. Windows will recognize the card and ask for drivers, which are supplied on an included floppy diskette. Customers with experience installing modems, video cards, or nearly any other internal PC device should have this card installed and working in under 20 minutes.

The FA310TX is a very basic card. Wake-On-LAN is not supported--there isn't even a connecter if you have an extra WOL cable lying around. There are five status lights that show various types of network activity and also let you know when collisions are happening. We didn't have any trouble with this easy-to-install card, and it would make a good choice for anyone looking to expand their network without breaking the bank. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • PCI interface
  • 10/100Base-T support at a reasonable price
  • Easy installation
  • Many status lights

Cons:

  • No WOL support

Canon CanoScan N650U USB Flatbed Scanner
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $49.88
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

This CanoScan flatbed scanner delivers 600 x 1,200 resolution in a slim package, just over 1 inch high. It uses a single USB cable for both power and data from any compatible Mac or PC. This scanner offers 42-bit scanning with more than four trillion possible colors. It also has an external programmable button for fast, one-touch scanning.

Another handy feature is Canon's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top, which allows you to scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Many other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat; the N650U scanner cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts up to 1 inch vertically and lies flat to create extra space. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nice scanner, but useless after upgrading computers
I have had this scanner for a couple of years and I loved it with my old Windows 98 computer and my Mac OS 9.0 laptop. Then I bought a Mac Mini with OS 10x. I have had compatibility nightmares ever since.

I found out that it'll work with OS 10 IF and ONLY IF I install Adobe PhotoShop or Elements. Why should I have to spend $100 or more on software to get an $80 scanner to work? So, I got my laptop back out and started scanning and working on my graphics files on the laptop, where I have expensive programs that I cannot yet afford to replace. But in order to get an external CD Burner to work I had to upgrade to OS 9.1.

Now, after just upgrading from Mac OS 9.0 to 9.1 I have to go through the whole process of troubleshooting again. I've already spent half a day in total frustration.

This scanner should be off the market - without new drivers it's totally useless. It's more of a shame because I had liked it very much until a couple of months ago. There should be no reason for Canon and/or Mac to get appropriate drivers up and online.

3-0 out of 5 stars worked great until the glass broke
I had this scanner for a couple years. I thought it worked really good. I used it mainly for scanning pictures, and they were very sharp. Then one day the glass shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces with no apparent explaination.

3-0 out of 5 stars works OK but some limitations
Unlike some of the others with this unit,I had no trouble installing and using it (one I got the right drivers, that is -- J&R Music world initially sent me the wrong disk, grrr).

Though it runs a little slow, it does make reasonably clean scans, and makes MUCH less clutter on and behind my desk than most other machines, which is why I bought it.

People need to know, however, that the lens has crummy depth-of field, which means that anything that is not dead flat against the glass will look fuzzy. My previous scanner could make acceptable images of small three-dimensional objects;this one won't.

Also, the color balance is kind of off,too blue-tinged.With my Paint Shop Pro, I need to subtract a little blue and add a little red to the scans to make them look like real life.

I assume that both these problems (poor depth of field and color imbalance) come from the dim scanning lamp neccesitated by the low power available to the unit. ... Read more

Hitachi 702HT 5-Piece Home Theater Speaker System
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $199.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Hitachi's 702HT five-piece home theater speaker set is as economicalwith space as it is with price, providing affordable and affable surroundentertainment with decent, natural sound. The video-shielded 702HT comes witheverything you need to hook it up to your 5.1-channel surround receiver, including mounting equipment and lots of speaker wire with presoldered leads foreasy installation.

An external powered subwoofer is required to get the full effect of 5.1-channelmovies or music, but even without a subwoofer, this system offers spacious andpleasing sound from five compact speakers. The center-channel speaker is thelargest of the five, as it will be charged with reproducing the bulk of thesound in Dolby Digital, DTS, or televised Dolby Pro Logic programming. The otherfour speakers--left, right, and left and right surround--are identical and comewith pivoting tweeters that let you focus the sound for your prime listeningarea.

We're quite impressed with the quality of sound from this little system; itshallmark is distortion-free clarity and surprisingly natural vocal andinstrumental timbres, especially from the center speaker. Don't expect wonders--the bassresponse is limited, and the high frequencies can extend only so farand so sweetly in a budget system.

But if you're tight on space and funds, or simply want the enveloping pleasureof surround sound in your office or dormitory, we highly recommend the Hitachi702HT as a peppy entry-level surround speaker system.

Pay close attention to phase coherence when hooking up the supplied speakerwire. Since the wire is black, it's not easy to tell which of the two leads iswhich. One is marked with a thin white line, so be consistent about which leadyou join to which terminal at the speakers and at your surround receiver; out-of-phasewiring can ruin surround effects and further diminish your system'sbass response. --Michael Mikesell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Rosenthal Scores Again
With easy to follow photographs, Morris Rosenthal demystifies the PC building experience, providing the hobbyist or experienced technician with an easy to follow approach to building a PC from a barebones case to complex gaming systems.

Discussed are component purchasing, defining what type of system is best for certain applications, and advice on avoiding damage (repeated frquently)

In the back are handy troubleshooting guides.

Another excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great but I want more.
You can't save any money building your own PC. In fact, you'll probably spend more than going down to WalMart or CostCo. But when you build your own, you know what you're getting.

I want a system with a lot of disk performance and memory to do the jobs I ask of it. The only video I need is enough to get the operating system to load, and I usually don't even connect speakers. A heavy duty gamer needs lots more video power, and may want a sophisticated sound card as well. The WalMart/CostCo systems are designed to fit everybody, so they really fit only Mr. Average.

The first thing I did when I got this new 4th Edition was turn to the chapter on building a system using the Athlon 64. Mr. rosenthal was right on the money. He ordered a cheap case, and then immediately replaced the cheap power supply with something heavier duty. He then used an Asus motherboard, again first rate, although (I think) more expensive than some others just as good but with a less valuable name.

One minor complaint - I'd like to see some recommendations on brand names. What brand of Power Supply did he use - why? What about a reference list for mainboards, or a web site that would give recommendations? And while I'd hate to see him create a firestorm, how about an Intel/AMD comparison.

Finally we need another addition. How do you build a dual processor Opteron? I can't afford one, but I'd like to dream. And of course there will need to be a sixth edition with the new dual processor cores that are coming.

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent but dated
Excellent book, great photos. Fantastic for DIY.
However, the year 2004 is creeping on us, so an update would be nice, especially with amd64. ... Read more

Audio CD (24 March, 1998)

Editorial Review

Yes, it's another group of five young white boys making dance-influenced pop that makes the girls scream. Not only is the makeup of this group familiar, their sound is almost a clone of fellow teenybopper dreams the Backstreet Boys. It's probably not surprising, considering that they share the same manager (who had all five members of '80s preteen scream machine New Kids on the Block as the best men at his wedding, natch). The resemblance is a little too close for comfort, however, with almost every track here mirroring one on the Backstreet Boys album. From the radio hit "I Want You Back" and the sugary harmonizing on ballads like "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" to the one step forward, two steps back approach to sex appeal on "Giddy Up," 'N Sync--or their producers--have crafted the perfect balance of catchy pop ditties and swoon-inducing slow jams. --Rebecca Wallwork ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Giddy Up...Away from this CD.
N*sync is the possibly most overrated group of all time. True they have legions of fans all over the world, but can you imagine when those horney young pre-teen girls grew up and found this CD in a box in their attic? They were probably asking themselves, "Why the hell did I buy this crap?" Those girls are now calling the boys they once loved, the boys that love eachother. However, I won't go on complaining that N*sync is gay, because you can't really prove that. Other than the fact that they're all guys that spend...a lot of time together. But Justin got his d**k sucked by Brittney Spears! I recomend this CD for 90's nostalgia sake. See U in the Future...

5-0 out of 5 stars NSYNC's Debut
I remember this album when I was in the 5th grade. I love this album and in fact it was my 3rd pop music album. I fell in love with every song. 'N Sync are not your flash-in-the-pan teen idol act. The group are accomplished singers and dancers. They also show versatility. This album has been certified 10x Platinum. Remember, this was 1998. ... Read more
