    Canon ZR40 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5" LCD, & Digital Still Mode
    Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $598.00

    Editorial Review

    At just over a pound, the lightweight ZR40 from Canon makes an excellent camcorder for the beginning digital-video enthusiast. This compact and comfortable camcorder offers high-end features found on much more expensive cameras, yet is easy enough to use that a novice can begin filming right away.

    The camera is sleekly designed, and pieces pop out of the ZR40 from all sides. On top, the adjustable lens viewer also slides in and out so you don't have to hold the camera too close when filming. You can also use the 2.5-inch LCD screen, which swings out of the left side of the ZR40. It also twists and can be flipped over, providing myriad filming angles.

    While we were suitably impressed with the image of our capture video, the sound of the camera's motor could be heard during some of the playback. It's a minor annoyance, which can be overcome with an optional external microphone.

    With an 18X optical zoom (as well as 360X digital) intuitively placed next to the right thumb, the ZR40 is able to get up close to the subjects you're filming. Canon's image stabilizer worked well at correcting the "shake" common to handheld cameras. And the camera functions as a digital camera as well, taking snapshots in addition to video.

    The ZR40 offers a variety of connectivity options, including FireWire ports, composite AV, and S-video. You can input from an analog source such as a VCR, TV, or camcorder and convert the signal into digital video. It also ships with a handy remote control (with a range of 16 feet) that handles the record functions and can even zoom the lens in and out.

    Various special effects modes are incorporated into the camera as well, in addition to a new low-light mode that allowed us to shoot footage in the evening. There are DV cameras out there that do more than this one, but for most users, the ZR40 does plenty and does it well. --J. Curtis

    1-0 out of 5 stars Awful Company.Awful Product.Run!Run!Run!
    Well where do I begin?After a month of use, the battery stopped working.Contacted Canon via email.They replied battery is not under warranty.Would you like to buy another one?Please.

    6 months later.I started transferring video to my computer only to find out this stupid camera eats tapes.I have lost two tapes so far.One of them was my son's birth!!!!

    The eating tapes issue is a major problem with this unit.They have known about it and continue to ignore it.Do a search on "zr40 tape problems" to see what I am talking about.There are even more results on sister product, zr10. I will never buy a product from Canon again.They are idiots for doing this to their customers.

    1-0 out of 5 stars always "remove the tape" message
    I bought this model 18 months ago. Now it has big problem. I can't rewind the tape well. "remove the tape" mesasge always pop up. I sent it back to Canon for repair. They asked me $169 for repair. What can I say now? Too bad camcorder.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Eats tapes
    After about a year of use, ZR 40 started eating tapes.Do a google search on the topic, there are hundreds of people with the same problem.'Remove Cassette' and 'Eject' (use those as keywords combined with 'Canon ZR' to view message boards postings) will appear on the screen, and that's the end of the toy. ... Up to you, but I would buy a generic branded battery of the same type (Lithium BP522).I bought a generic battery and it works just as well -- saved me $50 !

    5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the accessory kit for the same price
    The battery is great, but Amazon offers the accessory kit with the same battery, plus a mini-dv tape and a carrying case for the same price.The case is useless for the ZR series, but might come in handy for some other purpose.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for ZR Series camcorders
    I love my ZR45MC, but it really requires this extended battery.

    The battery that came with my ZR45MC is woefully inadequate for anything but a handful of brief cameo shots.Also, the charge doesn't hold for any extended period of time.You may pull out your ZR to catch a great moment in time only to find that the battery has discharged while idle in the camera bag.Not using the LCD does help the situation quite a bit.

    This extended battery makes a good primary battery and seems to go more than twice as long as the normal one.Also, you can then use the original as a backup (as long as you refresh it's charge occassionally :-) ). ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Early Adopters Pick: November 2002. Aimed at the portable video editing market, Apple’s first SuperDrive-equipped laptop (DVD-R/CD-RW) comes loaded with iDVD software to burn DVDs, iTunes to burn your own music CDs, and a 15.2-inch-wide screen.

    In keeping with Apple's goal of providing a convenient technological hub to accommodate the modern Mac user's digital lifestyle, the newest PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) comes loaded with iDVD software and can be used to burn DVDs that can be played in most consumer DVD players. The SuperDrive also lets you use iTunes to burn your own music CDs and the Disc Burner feature in Mac OS X to burn data CDs. They've kept the sleek exterior as stunning as ever, but on the inside is a whole new architecture: faster PowerPC G4 processors, powerful new graphics capabilities, more RAM, and the world's most advanced operating system combine to deliver off-the-charts performance.

    Inside is a screamingly fast 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine and 1 MB of on-chip level 2 cache running at the same speed as the processor. The cache adds high-speed, short-term memory that boosts system performance by providing quick access to data and instructions en route to the processor. In other words, it adds up to wicked-fast performance.

    The unit comes with 512 MB of RAM, expandable to 1 GB of RAM--twice the capacity of most full-featured portables on the market. This lets you run several RAM-hungry applications simultaneously or store an entire graphics project in main memory for fast image manipulations. Its 60 GB hard disk uses the high-speed Ultra ATA/66 interface, which enables video professionals to quickly transfer large video files in real time directly from a DV camcorder.

    This PowerBook has all the subtle refinements and esthetic touches that made it the most coveted full-featured notebook computer on the planet: 1-inch thickness, 5.4-pound weight, five-hour battery, AirPort, 15.2-inch megawide screen, and pure-grade titanium body. The system also features an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics accelerator and 32 MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) video memory. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Clean, elegant, graceful and powerful.
    The Titanium G4 PowerBooks are in their final state of evolution.Rumor has it that the new version will be radically different in design.As such, I would take advantage of this final incarnation of the Ti Book because it has gone through all of the refinements and fine tuning that has put it at the top of the game.Sure, the newer model will have more bells and whistles -- but keep in mind that it will also have a lot of things needed to be tweaked and adjusted.The Ti Book has had several generations of refinement and is now perfect, solid and reliable.Remember, a computer is only as good as the work you do on it and this Ti Book has a long pedegree to back it up and years of refinement that have brought it to its optimal (and final) version!Buy it before it is gone.It's quite simply the ultimate computing machine!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Apple did it again
    I currently own an iMac G3 (500-MHz) and I've been checking out what Apple had to offer for the portable line. I'm a Mac user so there was no debate as to what type of computer to buy, but the real question was: iBook or PowerBook?

    I got to play with this 15" beauty just yesterday. My brother is using one from his job. Well, I found that the performance of the laptop was very good. Applications ran nicely and the ATi graphics card is quite fast with games and iTunes visualizer mode. My iPod worked perfectly (of course) and I was able to transfer large files very easily. I like that this notebook uses an ATi card instead of a NVIDIA card because ATi cards are more efficient with portables but are still the fastest. I wish it had DDR-SDRAM instead of PC-133.I would have given it 5 out of 5 stars but some things bothered me...

    Pros
    * 15" widescreen (great for graphic design artists)
    * Snappy performance (1 GHz: don't let the number fool you)
    * large HD
    * 512 MB RAM
    * ATi graphics
    * Great design
    * DVD burning capabilities
    * Mac OS X

    Cons
    * The fan is noisy
    * Battery life is terrible compared to the iBook
    * Heavy compared to an iBook
    * Wow, these things get HOT on your lap.
    * Expensive

    Overall
    I'm happy to have used both the iBook and PowerBooks now. The iBooks are great but they're becoming more obsolete since more intense programs require a G4 chip. But for the basics, the iBook is perfect. The PowerBooks are definitely powerful notebooks (even if the clockspeed is 1 GHz) but the only drawback is the battery life. Since I'm a college student, I need something powerful but portable. I think the 12" PowerBook is the best buy but the 15" and 17" are still incredible pieces of technology.

    5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest laptop ever with the best OS.
    I love this powerbook.It is without a doubt the handiest computer that I've ever used.The wide ratio display makes it easy to have multiple coding windows open while the convenient brightness controls allow me to work easily in changing light conditions.The mute button is handy whenever the phone rings.

    But that's just the start of the story.The really beauty of this laptop is that it runs OS X.Mac OS X represents the pinnacle of evolution in operating systems.The highly intuitive environment lets a user get their work done without having to really think about the computer.It is more or less a seamless interaction. But if you need to leverage the UNIX core, it is just a terminal window away and gives you all the power you could possibly seek. ... Read more

    The latest dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4 improves system bandwidth with engineering enhancements that include a 167 MHz system bus, and features a new-generation graphics processor, a DVD- and CD-burning SuperDrive, and the new Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar preloaded.

    The dual 1 GHz processors put this fast Power Mac G4 squarely ahead of PCs forhigh-end graphics workstation use, running professional applications like Adobe Photoshop up to 69 percent faster than a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4-based PC. And it's not all about processor speed--new memory cache technology and other engineering improvements inspired by Apple's new Xserve server architecture boost the speed of throughput between main memory and the system controller.

    Graphics performance is excellent, with ATI's hot new Radeon 9000 Pro graphics processor and Mac OS X Jaguar's new Quartz Extreme--a breakthrough combination of software and hardware that accelerates the compositing of 2- and 3-D images using your graphics card instead of the main processor. This gives the Power Mac G4 an order-of-magnitude advance in graphics capabilities--including color, lighting, modeling, transformations, texture mapping, motion blur, and more. In addition, the Power Mac lets you spread your work across two monitors for a larger workspace.

    This Power Mac comes with a fast 80 GB Ultra-ATA hard disk drive and three additional 3.5-inch hard disk drive expansion bays--with support for a total of up to four internal hard drives, for up to 480 GB of possible storage.

    Since the SuperDrive-equipped Power Mac comes with iDVD 2, you can burn data CDs and DVDs--with point-and-click ease--to archive your work minutes after you take your new system out of its box. It also accommodates a second optical drive in addition to the SuperDrive, so you can even watch a DVD movie while your work is burning to disc, or archive material at the same time.

    You also get the benefit of built-in Gigabit Ethernet for shooting large files across your network at previously unheard-of speeds, the 108-key Apple Pro keyboard, a 56K modem, four USB ports and two high-speed FireWire ports for connecting all kinds of peripherals, and an AirPort card slot. Four PCI expansion slots are also integrated directly into the main system controller, speeding expansion cards' throughput. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Fast. but really noisy
    I've been a Mac fan since the PB 180, but had gone PC for a while.I came back to the Mac with this DP G4 and love it.It's fast and has all of the goodies.We made a DVD of my son's first year with iMovie and made a DVD our families love. You can't do that on a PC without a lof of expensive software and hardware.My only issue is the noise.

    3-0 out of 5 stars You might want to check this first :

    My advice : Listen to a G4 first when you consider buying one; as it seems, not all of them are equally noisy.

    Other than that, the new G4 series is great; real workhorses and OS X also is fantastic.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great
    Apple has fallen behind the curve because Motorolla is falling apart.The guy who led the PowerPC development now works for Intel.IBM will step in soon to save the day and put Apple back on track (or so I pray), but what until then?Well this machine is okay, but before you buy you should know the good and bad.Apple like any company spews out a lot of marketing garbage and too many people take it at face value.

    Go read this review on the slightly faster 1.25 DP machines coming out soon:

    2-0 out of 5 stars coasters, coasters, coasters
    Using these on an iMac equipped with 4x Superdrive so far has burned coasters half the time (3 out of 6), either using the built-in disc burner features of MacOS X or using Toast Titanium 5.2.The coasters actually look discolored or cloudy, like something happened to the plastic of the DVD in the burning process.

    Also, the discs are not labelled with their speed -- they burn only at 1x so even when they do burn successfully it is incredibly slow.

    I would give 1 star but the cases are very nice.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
    A great product, but disappointed Office Depot do not ship outside of US.The licensed bandits here in Saudi Arabia charge 40 Riyals($...) a piece for DVD-R and I was getting set to buy a bundle from you guys. Looks like I will have to shop elsewhere.

    1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THESE FOR A PANASONIC HS2
    The other review by "Briansbro" was right on.I only wish I had read it before buying Memorex blanks.The new component DVD burner, the Panasonic HS2, cannot cope with these DVD-Rs for some reason.Out of a 5 pack, I got 1 successful burn.Everytime I put in the other 4, the player would literally shut down and power back up in "recover" mode.Weird.

    As an addition to Briansbro's comments on compatibility, I had also bought two 5-packs of Imation blank DVD-Rs because they only had one Memorex left (lucky!).I have had no problems with Imation, not one.I only wish I had read his review BEFORE I had wasted time with Memorex.I started to think that it was the Panasonic I got (a lemon?).Nope, it was the Memorex's.I hope I can stop someone else (and enlighten them) before they buy these blank DVD-Rs to use with their cool Panasonic component DVD burners.I have the HS2 with the 40 gig hard drive in it FYI. ... Editorial Review

    The Olympus C-3020 is designed to be the most affordable 3-megapixel model in Olympus's C series of digital cameras. Its key features include a 3.3-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, and SmartMedia storage.

    As its model number implies, the C-3020's list of features fits between those of the discontinued C-3000 and the current C-3040. Compared to the C-3000, the 3020 adds USB direct connect--no driver software is required to transfer photos to most computers. In addition, a new noise reduction system improves image quality in low-light situations. Stepping up to the C-3040 gets you a faster, brighter lens, a larger internal memory buffer for faster shot-to-shot performance, movie mode with sound (the C-3020 records silent movies), external flash connector, remote control, and long-life disposable lithium batteries.

    Like all models in the C-3000 series, the C-3020 is a powerful performer, featuring aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes, plus movie mode and uncompressed TIFF shooting.

    The C-3020 comes with a USB cable, carrying strap, lens cap, and retainer cord, four AA alkaline batteries, a 16 MB SmartMedia card, and a manual. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Digital Camera
    I have owned this camera for approx. 18 month and I still love it.It is one of the easiest digital cameras to get to know and use.From the first day I got it I had it out of the box and shooting right away.It's that simple.The only negative factor of the camera is the lack of a Hot Shoe Flash option.The C3020Z has several flash options for various lighting conditions; however, I have grown in my photography and require more advanced lighting options.As a starter camera this is a perfect introduction to digital photography.It has certainly helped me to expand in my Digital skills and knowledge, but as I move towards being a Professional Amateur I have out grown this model.That's my $0.02.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love it!
    I have owned my camera now for several years and still love it.
    My only wish would be that it would have a better zoom range.

    My favorite features include:

    Fill in flash
    no flash
    sepia tone
    black and white tone

    I use these features on a daily basis.

    I find it is great that I can immediatly view my photo taken for a few seconds without changing the mode, it really helps.

    I have used this camera everywhere you can imagine.

    It is not the smallest of camera's but I can fit it in a fanny pack or belt bag when on a trip.

    The lens cap snaps on and does fall off with even just a little nudge but it does come with a small thin cord to attach it to your camera strap.

    The batteries used are 4 AA, they will last longer if you don't constantly do a "slide show" or use the lcd screen as a view finder.Use the actual view finder and limit viewing and you will be surprised by how much you can use them.I do use rechargables as I like to take photos all the time and it saves me lots of money.

    It does come with a small memory card, but I used a 128mb from the start.I can now take about 169 pictures are high resolution.

    My photos come out great!Many of my friends and family ask me to take their photos now.....all because of the great shots.

    There are many, many features with this camera that I haven't even touched upon but check out the Olympus website for more info.

    LOVED the Camera until I forgot to take off the lens cap.The gear grind was horrible and now my once beloved camera is dead (minimum repair cost 179.00).By an inexpensive 2.0 Mega pix camera.It too will break in 16 months and you can buy another "upgraded"camera ( a 3 Mega Pix camera should be much cheaper by then) with the money it would take to repair it. ... Editorial Review

    Mixed-media professionals such as photographers, Web designers, and graphic designers will not be disappointed with Adobe's latest incarnation of Photoshop. While the major difference between this and earlier versions is that Photoshop 7.0 is Mac OS X compatible, this version also successfully addresses the issues of file management, easy photo retouching, and smarter output for the Web. In addition, new, improved tools such as painting and an enhanced brush palette allow Photoshop to build on its reputation as the leading tool for image manipulators. New-school designers of wireless applications will smile when they discover that Photoshop 7.0 finally offers support for WBMP-format graphics.

    Photoshop 7.0's new file management system comes in the form of a Windows Explorer-like file browser that allows users to easily sort and locate their images within various projects. Users can now organize projects by name, date, resolution, and a number of additional parameters.

    The enhanced brush palette allows users to create custom brushes and save them as a preset that can be accessed from the Tool options bar. Users can easily vary different aspects of the brush by changing the hue, opacity, or flow of the brushes for pastels, oils, and charcoal. Photoshop 7.0 also introduces a new Healing Brush and Patch Tool. With this tool, users can easily "heal" their images by removing scratches, blemishes, and other imperfections while also preserving shading, lighting, and texture attributes.

    Adobe has taken great strides in revamping Photoshop 7.0 to be more Web-ready than ever before. With the help of its companion software, Image Ready, users can now easily create rollovers and complex navigation bars with selected state by using the new Rollovers palette. Additional Web-ready features include enhanced Web export functions that allow designers to preview images designed for PDAs and mobile phones in the WBMP format. Users can easily create a slide show of their images and post online using the new Web Gallery. For those concerned about posting their images online, they can secure their images with the new password protection feature before sharing them.

    A long overdue spell checker has finally been introduced, with wicked multilingual spell-checking capabilities.A new search-and-replace feature allows users to search and replace across different layers in the same document.

    While Photoshop 7.0 introduces an impressive array of features that allow photographers and Web and graphic designers to work more effectively with Web and wireless devices, Photoshop still remains the leading tool for anyone serious about digital imaging. No other software package provides users with the ability to create such high-quality images. --Rich Ting ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product... well worth it. Better than CS, IMO.
    Adobe Photoshop 7.0 was a significant leap over 6.0. One great new tool is the Liquify filter, which lets you directly manipulate images. Obviously, Photoshop is the De Facto standard for image editing, and likely always will be. Since this is the last version that works with OS 9 anyways, it's not like I could use CS (though I've tried CS, and don't particularly like it).

    Version 7.0.1 is very often faster than Photoshop CS is, so it's a good thing to have for very large files.

    Invaluable... nothing beats it. Nothing.

    I never had access to many Adobe products, with exception for Pagemaker, because of the high price. But at my high school we have what we they called an Academy of Graphic Arts and Design. There, with the financial help of a well known college, the academy was given a full copy of Adobe Photoshop 7.0!

    I really enjoyed learning how to use Adobe Photoshop 7.0.I'm not one to read manuals or help menus and just like to play around. Learning how to use everything is fairly easy.

    One feature I LOVED is what is called "layers". You can have a photo in the background and then open other files and drag and drop onto the first picture. Then you can choose to erase part of the pictures you placed on top. But not everything is erased...each layer underneath the one you are erasing is still visible! There are various erasers (shape-wise) too, so it can look blended or have neat edges.

    I also liked the variety of "filters". These filters help change the picture. You can add texture to the picture, distort it, add light to a certain area, make the picture look like it on a stamp (as in rubber stamp)...the list goes on.

    The one bad thing about this is you can't do "Undo except for the change you just did (meaning if you made a mistake and decided to try something to "cover it up", if you didn't like the outcome of the "fix" you can't go back and change the mistake) EXCEPT if you are layering, you go to the box where it shows each layer and go to the history where you can delete (or "undo") up until the mistake you had made is gone.

    My point is, this program is Top Class. The best I have used (and I have tried a few) Although I'd like to try the Windows version, for those who have a Mac (this is the version I used and have experience with) GET THIS if you love photoediting. The possiblities are endless.

    Now if only I could save up enough money...
