Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

    Editorial Review

The Canon EOS D30 is one of the few available interchangeable-lens digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. It's designed to offer the performance and picture quality of a film-based SLR with the convenience and features of a digital camera. Based on Canon's EOS line of film cameras, the D30 is compatible with all EOS-related equipment, including EF lenses and EX-series Speedlite flashes. This model is targeted at "prosumers" (serious consumers and some professionals), and its EOS compatibility makes it a natural choice for people who already own Canon equipment.

If you're accustomed to using a Canon SLR, the D30's features and controls will be familiar. As with film models, the shutter speed, aperture, and focus can all be set manually or automatically. White balance can also be adjusted, either by selecting a preset value or by shooting and storing a reference image. Unlike most digital cameras, the traditional optical viewfinder is the only way to frame your shots; the 1.8-inch LCD monitor on the back of the camera is for perusing images and adjusting settings only. One bonus of this arrangement is that the D30 is always ready to take pictures; you don't have to worry about changing modes as you must on most digital cameras.

The introduction of the D30 also marks the first use of a CMOS sensor in a multimegapixel digital camera. Because CMOS sensors are less expensive, use less power, and are easier to manufacture than the traditional CCD sensors found on most cameras, there are high hopes that CMOS will be the primary sensor technology for the super-high resolution digital cameras of tomorrow. Until now, however, CMOS sensors have offered inferior results when compared to CCD, so they've been found primarily in entry-level and toy digital cameras. Canon seems to have solved the image-quality problem by custom designing the CMOS chip in the D30, and the company claims that their sensor offers better performance than most CCD sensors.

Images are stored on Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the IBM Microdrive. By default, files are recorded in JPEG format, though there are also settings for TIFF and RAW recording. TIFF is the most common lossless recording format, and TIFF images can be viewed and edited with virtually any photo editing software. TIFF files provide the highest-quality images, but at a price: a single D30 image occupies nearly 10 MB of memory. RAW, in contrast, is a newer format that's not recognized by as many photo-editing software packages, though Canon provides a plug-in to let Adobe Photoshop users directly import RAW files, and also includes software that lets you convert RAW files to TIFF files on your computer. Like TIFF, RAW is a lossless format, yet RAW files are only about one-third the size of TIFFs. Because the RAW image comes directly from the sensor and has received less in-camera processing than other file formats, it also offers experienced users more image-correction options.

A final note about the EOS D30. The CMOS sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative, which means that when you take a picture, the focal length of the lens you are using is greater. For example, if you took a picture using a lens with a 28mm focal length, the actual focal length would be 1.6x greater, or 45mm. If you're currently shooting with a Canon SLR, this makes your zoom lenses even more powerful, but it also means that you'll need to pick up a wide-angle lens or wide-angle converter to regain the range of focal lengths you have with film. --Michael Lewis and Shane Burnett

    Pros:

    • Compatible with all Canon EOS equipment.
    • Features RAW mode for ultimate photographic control.
    • SLR flexibility and control.

    Cons:

    • Expensive.
    • Focal length adjustment makes wide-angle shooting difficult.
    • More memory is the first accessory you'll need to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool!
This camera was the best investment in my photography that I could have imagined.Without the cost and concern of film and processing, I was free to make as many photos as I wanted, and to adjust the settings to learn about the effect of such control. With my EOS lenses, my existing investment was prolonged.I have printed and posted much of my work, and the quality has met or exceeded local labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Aspiring Intermediate Photographer
You need to take a lot of pictures to become a better photographer, and you need to learn from the pictures that you take. You get immediate feedback from this camera.I've owned mine now for over a year and I can see the vast improvement in my abilities. The biggest drawback is its slowness, and the second is that you have to multiply your lens by 1.6 to get the true focal length. But it takes all of the Canon lenses so I switch around between my film camera and this one.In all, I've been very happy with this camera and it has gone everywhere with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5000 pictures and I am still wanting another D-30 camera
I purchased a D-30 from Amazon last year and I previously had been using a Digital Nikon. The improvement was monumental in all aspects. I subsequently drowned my camera, and I am getting ready to repurchase another D30. They are not ready for water yet? I have taken approximately 5000 pictures and saved them all in the most usable format and I will continue to do the same. The Photoshop software that comes with the camera is very user friendly, I am sure there are many features yet to learn, but I have been extremely happy with what I have already used. I hesitate to say mastered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatic.
Do you ever find your pictures boring? If you do, get this lens, and your pictures will have a whole new dramatic look, becuase of its super wide angle. Another advantage is that a wider angle allows you to take pictures at a slower speed, good for darker occasions, because the shaking of hands would have a smaller effect. The third advantage is compared with most of the other Canon professional lens, this is very small, which makes it easier to use at public places where bigger lens means more attentions, and more attentions means less oppotunities. I didn't say anything about the lens's actual picture quality, because Look, this is a Canon Professional lens(the red ring at the top of the lens indicates professional, instead of regular yellow), there is no question about the quality of the pictures! ( And of course, though wide-angle, the pictures are not twisted at the corners at all.) It's the best you can get out of an SLR! But of course, good equipments is only half of good pictures, you will never be able to take good pictures even with the best lens if you don't learn and don't experience. Good Luck. And by the way, ... send me the lens promptly, no taxes, good price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide Angle.
This lens is for Canon EOS cameras. EF 28-70mm F2.8, EF 70-200mm F2.8, and this lens--EF 17-35mm F2.8, together is one series of professional zooming lens. They all have the same diameter, 77mm. 17-35 is wide angle, 28-70 is midzoom, 70-200 is long distance. I have all of them, and use them on different occations with my EOS 3. All three lens have the same superb quality, but have different uses. If you have all of these three lens, you will be able to take almost any pictures you want, and all the pictures that you take would have a very professional look even if you are an amature, since a good photographer is made up with half the equipment, and half the person.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most prized possessions
This is not just my favorite lens, it is one of the nicest things I own.

I love wide-angle photography, and the extra field-of-view I get with a 17mm wide-angle (over a more conventional 28mm) is dramatic.I took this on an extended vacation in Japan and found it to be the only lens I really needed for the entire trip (I also brought my 28-135 IS and my 50 mm f/1.4 but really needn't have). There is something about Japan that really cries out for a super-wide angle (small interiors for one thing). On a more recent trip to Spain I admit there were times I wish I had my 28-135 with me for a little more reach, but this 17-35mm is still my primary lens.

I think the optics on my 50mm 1.4 are noticably better than this lens, but I have become so accustomed to the 17mm view that I find a "normal" focal length practically useless.

There is marvelously little distortion in this lens at 17mm.

It is worth noting however that you will undoubtedly get shadows from even the thinnest filters (I have a very very thing polarizer filter that I use with this lens and even it will crop the image, the lens is so wide.)Also, when I use the built-in flash on my A2E the lens will cast a shadow in the image, which is annoying (a little hard to explain, but the point is that you see so much at 17mm that the lens itself blocks the flash).Someday I will get an external flash to avoid this problem. ... Editorial Review

The Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM lens uses a rear-focus telephotooptical design with two ultralow-dispersion (UD) glass elements to ensuremaximum image sharpness and accurate color fidelity. The two UD glass elements, combined with the rear focusing, correct aberrations to give you extremely sharpand clear images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super "L" Lens, Price not too Bad Either
There is nothing like a telephoto to bring boats at anchor up close when you're halfway up a mountain. I got a great shot in Tahiti just that way with just this lense and a friend of mine used it on the cover of her romance novel. It's true the lense is heavy. Canon says it weighs 1.7 pounds, but it seems heavier. No matter though, because you won't have to go to the gym if you heft this baby around for awhile, and as a side benifit, you'll get crisper, sharper photos then you would with any other 200mm out there today. Just think of it as body building and photo shooting both at the same time. Also this one won't break your wallet.

Serously, this is one darned fine piece of glass, you just simply cannot go wrong with a Canon "L" lense, just can't

5-0 out of 5 stars An "L" Tele for a reasonable price
Canon L lenses are known for their great optics and priceyness. This fast tele is an excellent value. The only thing that would improve this lens would be the addition of the image stabilizion feature found on a few Canon optics.Of course, the advantage of large aperature lenses is that you can set a fast shutter speed and still have enough light for a shot. This lens is surprisingly compact, (as long focal length teles go).The autofocus is very fast and quiet.Comes with a hood, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cheapest option to take good photos ...
... ok, it's not the best lens in the world, but you can't find anything cheaper and lighter, and you are going to take better photos that with a point & shoot camera. Experts say that the best way to learn photography is get 3 good primes lens, I disagree, get a very [inexpensive] zoom lens, take photos and look how you use your camera, after that you can think what you *really* need: a better zoom, several primes lens or all. Only when you have enough experience you can choose the correct option. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, fast, sharp!
This lens is outstanding. Speed and sharpness are top-notch. I use this lens for a wide array of situations and it has always delivered impressive results. Best lens in it's class at a reasonable price. It's well built, sturdy, and not so heavy so it's relatively easy to carry around. Canon really impressed me with this lens. I use it with my EOS system (traditional and digital cameras).

4-0 out of 5 stars overall great lens, but not great price
I cannot help but giggle when I saw comments like "great lens for the money". It is selling for $440 at here, even on so-called clearance. However, one can easily find the same lens at least $50 cheaper at some decent online camera store, such as B&H, ritz camera, etc. Sad Amazon...

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet.... a pleasure to use, just a little heavy
    Owned 2 weeks:

The only thing to cause me to stop short of 5 stars is the weight of the lens. Stabilization is great and worth every dime. Don't even think about the other 75-300mm non-IS version, it is junk - I tried it.You can hand hold this lens at 300 mm at 1/60!!No kidding.Focus is fast and accurate with my Digital Rebel - almost no hunting like on the other 75-300mm.You *must* get a skylight filter to protect the front element.

I'll update this review after a few months' use.

1-0 out of 5 stars No XP Driver!
This would be a fine printer. It produces lovely prints. The problem? For reasons I cannot fathom, CANON HAS DECIDED *NOT* TO RELEASE A WINDOWS XP DRIVER!!Now that I've upgraded my PC to XP, my Canon is a paperweight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Purchase -- Canon Not Supporting
I own a CD-300.The quality of the prints is quite good -- indistinguishable from a regular 35mm print. However, as another reviewer has stated, avoid this printer.Canon has announced that it will not develop a Windows XP printer driver for the CD-300.To add insult to injury, Canon announced today that it is producing a new 4x6 dye-sub printer, the CP-100, which I have no doubt will be XP-compatible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful printer, but cannot use on many computers.
I have this printer and love it.Or used to love it.I just got a new computer which runs Windows XP.You cannot use this printer with a new computer because Canon has arbitrarily decided not to release printer drivers.Their nonsensical stated reason is that the printer does not support USB (universal serial bus).Windows XP could support this printer. It recognizes the printer as new hardware over the parallel printer bus and asks for a driver.Since Canon has decided not to support Canon products there is no usable driver. Canon has only released Windows 95/98 drivers.

Do not buy this printer unless you are willing to keep around a Windows 98 computer with which to use it.

I've bought my last Canon product. ... Read more
