Uniden EXAI7980 900 MHz Analog Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $69.94 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Uniden EXAI 7980 combines 900 MHz cordless range and clarity with a full menu of functions and features, including a digital answering machine, caller ID, and a base speakerphone. All of these features combined make an easy-to-use, comprehensive, cordless call-management system for your busy home or office. It's easy to avoid unwanted calls with the EXAI 7980; this phone shows callers' names and numbers, as well as the call's date and time, in the handset's three-line display window. The unit saves caller-ID information in a 30-record digital file that allows scrolling, deletion, and instant callback. And, with caller ID/call waiting, you can see a caller's name and number even when you're already on another call. The handset display window, which offers backlighting when you answer or place a call, is the EXAI 7980's information center. In addition to displaying caller-ID and call-waiting information, it shows the number of new calls or messages and the elapsed time for the current call. The versatile base speakerphone also offers plenty of timesaving features. You can screen incoming calls by activating the speakerphone with just the touch of a button. You can also use the speakerphone and handset as an intercom system or for three-way conversations among an outside caller, a person talking from the handset, and a person talking from the base. With 15 minutes of recording time, the EXAI 7980's answering machine has plenty of room to take all your new messages and save your most important ones for future reference. You can set the maximum message length at one or four minutes, or announce-only. Digital technology allows message phone numbers to appear in the display window as you scroll through your message list; it also offers instant message-repeat or message-deletion and a voice date-and-time stamp for messages. (For a complete listing of the EXAI 7980's many other features, read our FAQ, which is linked from the upper left navigation bar.) In our tests of the EXAI 7980, the cordless sound quality was excellent and the broadcast range extended up to 100 feet from the base before the signal faded. However, there was some intermittent interference relatively close to the base (at about 50 feet) that did not disappear with repeated tests or with manual channel changes. The battery pack tested favorably against Uniden's rating of seven hours of talk time or seven days of standby. We think the Uniden EXAI 7980 is a smart choice for anyone who wants a complete cordless call-management system for home or office. However, it may not be suitable for those who frequently use the handset at extended distances from the base. Pros:

In my opinion, the highlights are: Quirks: Notes: There are currently more "technologically advanced" phones on the market, but this "old" guy compares favorably with many of them and it is more affordable. Best phone I ever had. 100% Recommended. -
First caller-id enabled phone I've owned. Between my telemarketer-unfriendly answering machine message and the ability to refuse callers using caller-id blocking, those annoying rings have been cut in half. Another nice thing about caller-id is that since I know who's calling, instead of a plain "Hello?", I can say "Hi, Pat!", or, if it's the answering service, "Hello, this is Ross". The PROBLEM: Battery life of the handset is much reduced compared to the old cordless handset. Too often, I've had it die, without warning, in the middle of a call (the base station remains connected, so if I can get to the base station before the other party hangs up, I can continue the conversation). Battery life itself isn't that big of a problem, it's the lack of warning. There's no BATTERY METER.

Princeton Eo2010 21" Monitor (Pc/Mac) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $648.88 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you're tired of having too many windows crammed into a tiny display, take heart, for the Princeton EO2010 is just the monitor to solve your problems. At a grand 21 inches, this behemoth offers plenty of display space and is capable of running at a monstrously high resolution of 1,920 x 1,600 at 75 Hz. The EO2010 should please not only the average computer user but also high-end graphics users. With a superfine 0.25-millimeter dot pitch and rock-solid refresh rates, the EO2010 also includes BNC connectors for supreme connection quality. Though the footprint is long, it's one of the narrowest ones we've ever seen, sure to shoehorn onto cramped desktops. Colors are brilliant, the picture is crystal clear, and fonts are readable down to a tiny 6.8-dot pitch. Coupled with amazingly high refresh rates, the Princeton EO2010 will reduce the strain of spending long hours in front of your computer. On the downside, we did experience some color misconvergence near the edges of the screen that couldn't be corrected through the onscreen display. Also, the screen is a little more bulbous than most 21-inch monitors, which distorts the screen geometry somewhat. Fortunately, the onscreen controls let you adjust a host of monitor options, including vertical/horizontal moiré, convergence, and the rotation of the screen. Calibration controls are easy to navigate and quick to respond, making setting up and maintaining your display a snap. When all is said and done, there's not much to complain about. The Princeton EO2010 is a monitor sure to satisfy desktop publishers, Internet freaks, and multimedia wizards alike. --Dan Simpson Pros:

It was a good decision to make. The Princeton 21" monitor actually takes up less deskspace than my 17" did, and the quality is excellent, especially for many of the newer games that take advantage of the 3d graphics cards. The color depth and dot pitch provide an excellent viewing experience. The quality is probably more evident when playing DVD's, however. Monitors are not the kind of thing you want to buy a new one of every year or two. You want one that will last a long time, and provide great quality. My Princeton 17" is 6 years old and still is one of the best monitors I have used, and I have no doubts this 21" one will show itself to have just as long a life. The quality difference is amazing, especially adding the 4" of additional viewing space. Also, the monitor seems to run quite a bit cooler than my 17" did, which in my small office is a real factor. If you have the money to make a new monitor purchase, the Viewsonic 21" is the one to consider. Sure you can get cheaper 21" monitors, but for something that you will be looking at so much over the next 6 or more years, do you really want to risk it, or skimp and get something you end up not being happy with? This is one purchase I have been very happy with. 4 Stars, and the only reason it isn't 5 is because it isn't a flat screen. ... Read more Asin: B00001MXZ7 |

The HP 10B is a directly positioned competitor to the TI-BA-II+, but HP's entry is superior. The keys feel more solid, the machine itself "seems" better made. Having worn out more than one of each, my experience has been that the HP has more staying power. And, the TI-BA-II+ often requires more keystrokes to accomplish the same tasks (i.e., NPV calculations). ... The HP 10B has a well written manual, including examples on using the function. HP has the manual available on-line on their website for the inevitable time that the user needs it and has lost the original. While there are cheaper financial calculators, it seems that this particular level is the minimum I would recommend to professionals or students. Less expensive versions, while saving a few dollars, miss important features. As a general rule of thumb, if the calculator can perform the "IRR" function, as this can, it will be able to handle pretty much any calculation into which the finance student, professonal, or banker will run. Lesser machines do not have this function. Ironically, even larger fancier calculators, such as the venerable HP-12C, are in my estimation inferior as well. The 12C uses RPN logic which, while saving even more keystrokes, is simply foreign to most students. More importantly, some functions, such as the Time Value of Money functions, on the 12C require interpretation. On the 12C, for example, solving for the number of periods in an annuity, the value gets rounded UP to the next integer. Strongly recommended as the best value in inexpensive financial calculators.
I would recommend it for any financial professional or a serious do-it-yourself financial planner. ... Read more Asin: B00000JBLB |

HP ScanJet 6350Cse Professional Series Color Scanner (C7674A) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $499.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Looking for a good basic scanner for home or small office use? The Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6350Cse professional scanner is a strong performer and is easy to set up, so you will be scanning in no time. The ScanJet 6350Cse is a solid basic scanner that more than adequately fills a useful range of needs. Setup and installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized quick installation poster was easy to read and simple to follow. If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the coach feature (part of the extensive online help system) or other online help, since the 6350Cse doesn't include a printed user's guide. You can also use the internal coach to help scan your work after a quick but thorough tutorial. (It took us only 10 minutes to run through all the steps.) In our tests, the scanner required a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half. After warm-up, we quickly reproduced flat images and slides using several different preset dpi settings. The scanner also has an automatic feeder for scanning multiple flat documents or images, which we found particularly useful. With the feeder attached, the scanner can handle up to five scans per minute. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, but it produces vivid scans. This is a fairly effortless scanner that can meet a wide range of needs. Whether paired with an ink-jet or laser printer, you will get crisp, clear scanned images. You can also fax scans or attach them to an e-mail with the click of a button. --David Greenberger Pros:

The SCSI interface is VERY nice, and using it reduces the time per scan considerably.
What I did not like is the miss of a printed manual (only on CD-rom) and the lack of an extensive on-line help (the help is very brief)! The 5 buttons on the scanner is just a joke for me, never used - I always wanted to make a scan/copy with other settings than the defaults. I have also configured the scanner to be used over our netwrok, whcich does not have much sense to me, but it works without problem. The scanner have a SCSI-II interface, which let's it transfer data to the computer as fas as it reads from the glass. The document feeder is very useful, especially when making photo copies (the photo copy utility is very useful) or whith OCR through big quantities. The control software is really good too, let's you take control of all settings, no cut down. I can recommend this scanner for all serious soho users!

Brother PT-1800 Electronic Labeling System Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $79.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Labeling is one of those activities that, once you start, is hard tostop. Brother's PT-1800 is an ideal device to feed this compulsion. "Just a fewmore folders," you'll think to yourself, and then the next thing you know, everydesk drawer is designated, every cabinet in the office kitchen has beenclassified, and you're sneaking the label maker home to mark all your tools, craft supplies, and children's toys. True label aficionados will appreciate the typewriter style of the PT-1800'sQWERTY keyboard, seven type sizes, and eight type styles, including bold, shadow, outline, italic, and vertical. It also has the ability to print eithervertically or horizontally and supports text underlining and framing. Operating the labeler is completely intuitive. Featuring auto numbering andrepeat, multiline printing, and mirror printing, the options for textpresentation seem limitless but are still very easy to use. The large pink codebutton accesses most of the formatting options, memory functions, accents, andsymbols (which include international symbols as well as fun signs like hearts, stars, and music notes). We were able to use the advanced functions without everreading the ample instruction manual. The PT-1800 comes with a roll of black-print-on-clear adhesive label tape, butyou can also accessorize with other ink colors and sizes, since the machine canaccommodate four tape sizes ranging from 0.25 to 0.75 inches. The labels willhold up under both hot and cold temperatures (microwave or freezer). and they'realso water resistant. Label printing is exceptionally fast. It took only 10seconds to print and cut a label reading "Brother PT-1800," making this labelerideal for office managers, teachers, industrial workers, and the compulsiveorganizer in all of us. It even comes with six AAA batteries. --Ariel MeadowStallings Pros:

Luckily I found the P-Touch printer. It handles a wide variety of tape sizes, and prints up to five lines of type. I use it to print identification labels for all of my electronic gadgets (in case I lose them), and contents labels (on boxes) for the prototypes I file into storage. M overwhelming #1 usage, though, is printing file folder labels. I use the 3/4" (18mm) size, black type on white. The labels make my files look professional and organized. And they only take seconds each to create. I wouldn't dream of making file folder labels any other way. I use my P-Touch almost daily. And what's the funniest thing? My secretary borrows my P-Touch to make file folder labels for everyone else in our department! Do I feel slighted that my administrative assistant makes labels for them -- and not for me? Not in the least. Sharing a secretary is something I've learned not to mind. But I do wish, though -- that my colleagues would get their own P-Touch printer!

Fellowes 30400 S40C 5-SHEET Shredder Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The S40C shredder from Fellowes is the perfect addition to your home or small office. It can handle up to four sheets of standard bond paper, and at 9.5 inches, has a wider entry than most shredders. However, the stamped steel blades of the cutting mechanism are not made to handle staples and paper clips. A red indicator light alerts you to adjust the machine when it is not properly placed on the included heavy-duty waste stand and basket. The red light also comes on when the basket is full and needs to be emptied. The blade mechanism can be comfortably lifted and set aside for cleaning or paper removal. With the main switch in the "on" position, the shredder uses its automatic start and stop feature: shredding is activated when paper touches a sensor on the blades, and it automatically stops when shredding is complete. The S40C employs a confetti cross-cut operation for greater security and waste reduction. This type of cut produces smaller pieces of paper but may also increase the risk of paper jams. To avoid a jam, empty the waste bin frequently. --Megan Dugan ... Read more Features Reviews (10)
This shredder has a 4 sheet capacity and has a neat "auto start" feature so you don't need to keep the shredder running or keep turning the machine on and off. This will accept legal and letter size documents. The wastebasket is included and the shredder fits nicely and seems to be nice and stable. With the conventional "strip cut" you get long strips of paper, but with this "cross cut" system, you get more security. If you want to prevent "identity theft" you will want to own a shredder. You can shred medical bills, legal documents, Pre-approved credit card applications, canceled checks, credit card receipts, financial data, personal documents, items containing your social security number, and any other important financial data. This is set up for home or office use. A thank you to my mother-in-law who just gave me this shredder as a house warming gift.
I had a Royal shredder about four years ago and it worked for only about a year. Not only that, but when it did work it would jam up after a few uses or so. When that Royal shredder died I got this Fellowes shredder and I have had less paper jams (maybe about five so far) in its three years plus of use. Other than that it works like a charm. However, it does not hurt to read the instructions, which might be part of the reason why some of the other customers had problems with this unit. First, although it is a five-sheet shredder, I usually put in one or two sheets at a time. But that is just me. Second, it says in the manual that the user should only shred paper for a maximum of *3* minutes, but no more than that. Therefore, don't shred all of last year's statements at once. After the three minute job, give the shredder a rest--that means no activity--for at least *10* minutes. Also, do be careful of paperclips and staples on the document, or anything else that can mess up the shredder. ... Read more Asin: B00004U8R4 |
