    Editorial Review

The compact, affordable CDP-3100 not only plays MP3 files burned to CD, but also mixed-mode CDs containing a combination of MP3 files and standard (PCM) CD tracks. You'll enjoy forty-five seconds of anti-skip coverage for music tracks and up to 120 seconds of coverage for MP3 files. Playback options include MP3 and CD track programming, as well as random and repeat (single track, all tracks). An auxiliary output lets you hook the player up to your home system through a stereo Y interconnect (not supplied).

The six-line text and numeric LCD simplifies file maintenance and offers scrolling text so you can read the full artist name and song title. The player supports MP3 bit rates of 32, 64, 96, 128, 192, and 256 Kbps, as well as variable bit-rate recordings (MP3 format ISO 9660). A hold switch prevents unintended interruptions in playback and saves batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped. Dynamic bass boost system (DBBS) heightens the impact of low frequencies. The player runs on two AA batteries (not supplied) and includes an AC power adapter.

3-0 out of 5 stars It does work...
I got this little MP3 CD player when it went on a great sale because my old CD player was five or more years old and didn't really work.I never listen to my CDs anymore, but I was going on a long plane ride/bus trip so I needed something to listen to.

There are skips, some songs that it will refuse to play, and doesn't work too well upside down.Mine had a tendancy to just turn off for no apparent reason, even if it had fresh batteries and the buttons locked.Oh, and the locker is cheap. It kept un-locking and then the player would turn on and run the batteries dry.

Not a huge problem and served me well on my trip. It's now gathering dust and will probably get chucked next time I trip over it.

Great for trips/children who break things/people who want a cheap MP3 CD player.NOT great for music conesueirs or people who move a lot.Whether it is for you, I don't know.

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT BUY THIS! IT SUCKS1
    DONT BUY THIS...

I bought this player when it was $50 and now im regretting it. I've had it for about a month and used it maybe 5 times. NOW it wont even see my mp3 cds. it just searches for like 10 minutes and then it says no cd.DONT BUY THIS BECAUSE IT IS CHEAP ...!IT HAS POOR SOUND QUALITY AND LIKES TO QUAKE AND STOP WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SONG!!!!!!

    DONT BUY THIS...

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful measuring stick for MP3 car stereos.
After doing careful research, I settled on the Aiwa CDC-MP32 unit for my wife's car.My wife's sister worked for Aiwa, so I got a fairly soliod deal on it; price aside, this unit offered some essential features: displayed ID3v1 tags, handled CD-R and CD-RW discs, and provided an input jack for direct connection of any device (no more car kits!)

After installation and a full two years of product testing, I can really write the definitive review.Too bad you have to search high and low for these: Aiwa was subsumed by Sony last year.

The unit plays MP3s with surprising clarity and volume. The trick to any MP3 playback on any device is to first normalize the volume levels, then decide on a bitrate/ sampling combination.

Without delving into much technical essay, if you have tins ears then 44Hz stereo with 128kbps sampling is more than adequate. If you like a little more fidelity and you are certain you normalized volume, then 44Hz stereo with 192kbps will be your bottom limit.Anything at 256 or higher really requires a top-end system to appreciate.Keep in mind, this is a car stereo.

The display is bright, clear, supplies you with some color options if you like, but more importantly, it will scroll your ID3v1 tags. These tags can indicate the artist, title, and album you're hearing. It doesn't support ID3v2 tags (more information possible), but then again this is four year-old technology and that's light-years in electronics. The tag scrolling is clear and a decent rate.

The "random" function is sometimes prescient, sometimes stuck on a genre. Some days it'll know the right song to follow, and I'll swear it read my mind.Other times, it will insist I need to hear four Donna Summer songs in a row (don't ask, it's my wife's car).It makes me laugh, so that's actually kinda cool.

I don't really like the flip-down face, because I live in a tough town and detachable faces are safer (read: easier to keep).Sometimes the unit will briefly flake: the wife had a bad couple days when the face refused to come back, but it was stuck on a very loud Spanish-language station (again, it's the wife's car and she's Brazilian). The fix was kinda simple but unfortunate: pull the fuse for the radio, start the car, shutoff the car, replace the fuse. You lose your presets and you have to get rid of the default scrolling, but it beats very loud Merengue songs while driving to work.

The remote was useless. It's wireless, swell, but the attachment was worthless for actually attaching it to the steering wheel. It lasted a week.Besides, the wife never used the remote, so no loss there.

After two years, it plays MP3s better than my Sony portable CD player, scrolls the tags so I can read it at night, and pumps considerable volume.AM/FM reception is about what I'd expect, with FM tuning in rather well and AM somewhat spotty depending on the station. It plays pressed-CDs as well, and it'll decode CD-TEXT if your CD is so equipped. That's actually kinda nice.

In all, this unit should be a measuring stick for anyone looking. If you can score one of these lightly used, do it.It's been reliable for us, aside from the few glitches, and it delivers what you'd expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars I will never buy an Aiwa again
I bought the Aiwa CDC-MP32 five months ago.For the first two months I was satisfied with its performance, until that really "cool" retractable faceplate FELL OFF, left dangling by only a flex cable.Luckily it was still under warrantee and I shipped it to a local service center for repair.

It's been ten weeks since I shipped them the broken stereo, and I still don't have the unit back. That's ten weeks commuting to and from work in total silence (I've really improved my whistling skills).I called the repair shop and I called customer service to complain but nobody seems to care.I talked to someone at the repair shop today and they said it will probably be another week, but I'm tired of hearing that.I registered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and while I was on their web site I noticed that Aiwa has an "unsatisfactory" rating. At this point I am so fed up I don't want the unit back I just want a refund.I left a couple of voice messages with my Aiwa customer service rep (and a fax) saying I want my money back, but they won't even acknowledge my request. They just keep saying it will be fixed soon.So if you're thinking about buying this product definitely get the longest extended warrantee offered.

While it was working I only had one small gripe, and that was with the remote control you strap to the steering wheel. At first I thought it was a great idea, but it kept falling off the strap when I pressed the buttons. Also, since it uses IR for a signal it has to be almost perfectly lined up with the main stereo unit - so it won't work if you are turning the steering wheel (even a little bit).Other than that, I was satisfied with most of the other features of the stereo (while I had it).

4-0 out of 5 stars Umm...... I take, well...most of what I said back.
Yesterday, I wrote a review of this unit after having had it in my car for about three weeks, saying that it was a pretty good unit for the money but that I resented enormously the fact that I couldn't get rid of the scrolling advert running across the display. An hour later I got into my car and figured out how to get rid of it. So I retract utterly my erroneous comments about the unit itself, and substitute a minor point about the inadequate manual that came with it, which most definitely does not indicate how to get rid of the ad. (You do it by holding down the "dis" button for about two seconds until it beeps, after which it will stay on the display you have selected without defaulting back to the rolling ad).

Sorry Aiwa. It's great unit after all. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Ideal for summer fun, the ZSX3CP CD/radio boombox offers all-systems-go media playback and a sturdy, water-resistant design so tunes can go almost anywhere you do. Its MP3-compatible CD player uses a jog-lever navigation control to help quickly and easily select the song or album being looked for, and a four-line, dot-matrix display further simplifies navigation.

The ZSX3CP's ergonomic design includes innovative features like a carry handle spanning its stereo speakers and function controls closely clustered for ready access while listening. Sony's ESP2 CD shock protection uses advanced technology to provide skip-free playback during active use, and the water-resistant design makes use of high-impact plastic housing with rubber gaskets, bushings, and waterproof seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt. (The unit is explicitly not designed for immersion in water.)

The ZSX3CP comes with a digital AM/FM stereo tuner, too, boasting 30-station memory presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and drift-free reception. Other features include resume (which re-starts a compact disc from the beginning of the track where playback last stopped, even in MP3 mode), Mega Bass sound for enhanced low frequencies, 20-track CD programming, shuffle play, and repeat play (one/all/program). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment
    I have two complaints.

    1. I was completely unsatisfied with MP3 playback. Long Load times and a terrible shuffle contributed to this problem. I bought the player for mp3 cds and after the first week I wasnt even using them.

    2. After owning the player for six months and never putting it through a high stress environment all regular play stopped working. The player would continue to play on volumes of 1 or 2, but at a volume of 3 or higher shorted out after 15-20 seconds.

I dont know if I should buy a new cd player or have it fixed and risk it breaking again.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for use indoors
since I didnt need to need to use it outdoors or move it around a lot it worked for a little more than 3 years! My only complaint is the way you switch songs and stations.Great boombox if you dont need to move it around a lot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Searching for a Marine solution.
I have purchased not one, or two, but three of these units! Each has survived in the harsh marine environment for less than a year. The problem always lies in the same two areas. The jog switch is not only difficult to use. It is the first thing to suffer from water intrusion. Why they would put such a device on a water resistant unit is beyond me. Obviously the seals cannot be made sufficiently water resistant. The second issue is where the power cord plugs into the unit. This is a standard plug arrangement, and not in the least water resistant. The metal portion of the plug remains visable upon installation.

Admittedly, the environment I use the unit is very harsh. I leave it on the deck of my sailboat where it receives light rainfall and ocean spray. I have been unable to find any water resistant unit other than Sony products. Sony used to make a Sports boombox that was yellow and extremely well built. It lasted me five years on the sailboat! That unit stayed on deck all the time. Even in heavy rainfall and sailed through a Tropical Storm while playing CDs!! It also came with a DC power adapter which is convenience for plugging in the boat. The new models do not.

The answer may be the expensive option of installing a complete audio system. However, that is expensive, requires wiring to be run through the boat, and, worst, requires putting holes in the boat to mount speakers.

In the meantime, I will purchase one more Sony Sports boombox because I like the price and the product before if fails to the elements. A hundred bucks a year for having tunes on the boat is worth it.This time, however, I am going to try the cheaper version without the jog switch, and treat the power connection with water resistant electric grease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great player......
I was able to fit all 3 discs of Queen's Greatest Hits onto one cd.....and I still could have put on 6 more complete discs of songs......and that's only on the highest quality!First things first.....I saw a review on here with a person complaining about the beep that went off whenever you push a button and that there was no pause feature........... Read the manual......You can turn off the beep and there definitely is a pause feature (you push the play button...notice the double bar symbol under the triangle.)Anyways, this player has great sound and never skips. The radio that has the weatherband and tv features isreally great. It's just an overall perfect player. The only thing that I don't like are the headphones. No, it isn't because of a bad sound quality......It's just that I don't like putting things inside my ears...especially when the things aren't a tight fit allowing them to move around and be annoying......... Anyways...... Amazing player.......I strongly suggest it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recharging issues; a bit large for running
My DCS901 MP3 disc player did not recharge the batteries recommended by Sony.I tried two different battery sets and now I'm sending the unit back in for repair. Also, I think it is too large for running comfortably. It is bulkier than the Sony Sport Walkman tape player that I previously used and I wanted to get away from that bulk.I would prefer a small flash MP3 player.Volume was almost not loud enough in noisey areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Near perfection for runners - with a *warning*
Quick warning: when I first got this mp3 player, I thought it was great in theory. But when I started using it I found it skipped like crazy. After several months, I tried my fourth - yes, fourth - brand of CDR discs, and now it never skips. Seriously, it hasn't skipped once in months of heavy use. This thing is very picky about its media! The CDRs I am using now are Memorex 700MB.

I love this mp3 player. I use it when I am running to listen to audio books and sometimes for music. My audio mp3s tend to be very large/long files, so a good resume and the ability to fast forward/rewind quickly were important to me. The D-CS901's FF/Rewind are real, not just 2x speed like most mp3 players. You can zip through an hour long mp3 in a minute or two. And the resume is perfect - it ALWAYS starts where you left off - unless you take the CD out, then it forgets.

The thumb control is absolute perfection when running. Some reviewers have said their thumb bumps the volume by accident - I guess it's a hand shape issue because I do not have this prob at all.

The so-so sound quality overhead-ear-plug headphones are actually perfect for running. They don't mind getting sweaty like hphones with pads, and they are light as feathers. Plus, having the plugs pushed into your ears helps you hear even when near traffic.

The fact that the player is waterproof is pretty handy when it is raining. Rain? So what!

There are some minor negatives. The hand strap is a little narrow and I can't get it quite as snug as I'd like it to be. The narrowness of the strap causes some discomfort. The other negative is that I wish I could crank the volume up just a bit more. Even with a regular music CD it feels like Sony decided loudness is bad for you. Hey, can't I make that decision myself? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Noisy product, short lifetime
My Sony Walkman was purchased for $99.99 in 7/03 and its disk spin motor has stopped, so CDs will not play.It was also noisy (clicks, ticks) while it played.I have owned other Sony products and have had no problems with them. This is the first time that I am quite disappointed with a Sony product for only 1.5 years of use.I called Sony Service Center and was told it could be replaced with a "refurbished" one at a cost of $78.97, recommending that it might be wiser to just buy a new one.I have no intention of doing either. I will inform my friends, including investors, of this experience, and cease purchasing Sony products and encourage them to do likewise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greatest CD Player Ever, But a Problem with Atrac
When I bought this CD player I didn't know much about it, but it was on sale, so I decided to buy it. The sound quality is SUBERB, and it is very strong and durable. I really enjoy the screen feature that says the album name, the song you are listening to, and other things like that. The G-Protection is amazing, with two levels of strength to choose from. Also, all SONY products are AMAZING!!!!!!

So, why 4 stars? Well, really, it should get a rating of 4 1/2 stars. Why? Well, when I used the software for the MP3, my computer messed up and I had to start my list of songs ALL OVER AGAIN. It takes a long time to make these, and losing it is very dissapointing (FYI: I have a Dell XP). But, my computer is working better with this program, and now it works fine. It is usefull, though. You can fit hundreds of songs on a blank CD-R or CD-RW. But there are 2 other things that get on my nerves.
ONE-You can't save a project on the Atrac software. This makes you have to do it all at once, which can take hours out of your day.
TWO-If you are NOT a system administrator, you can not use this software. It wont let you. Adults won't have this problem, because they probably are already system administrators, but the teens and kids probably are'nt, so they will have to have their parents around in order to burn. This makes sense, so that teens aren't burning nonstop, but it really can make me angry.

BUY THIS IF:You do not plan to use the Atrac feature, but still want the very best CD player that has many great features.

DO NOT BUY THIS IF: You are depending on the Atrac feature for many uses, and will use the feature a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great player, not-great software
I've had this CD player for a year and it works great. ATRAC3 is great - the sound is great and I can fit around 20 regular CDs onto one Atrac3 disc. The down side is the software. The first time I used it, it crashed, and it can take 2-3 hours to make one CD, be it from CDs or an MP3 collection, and some tracks don't write - and you don't find out until AFTER writing the CD. I didn't like how only MP3s can be converted to ATRAC3, as I have several WMAs. The software is frustrating because of the crashing and not writing tracks. If ATRAC3 doesn't interest you, this CD player can also play MP3 CDs and regular CDs too.

The CD player itself is great. It has a long battery life. One set of batteries lasted through a two-week vacation with constant play and more (and 3 ATRAC3 CDs was much lighter than a giant case with all my music). I've dropped it and it continues playing and doesn't skip. The sound isn't as loud as other players, but I don't like to damage my ears so it's fine for me.

The CD player is great and I reccommend it, but Sony needs to improve their SonicStage software. Otherwise, this is a good purchase. ... Read more

iRiver SlimX iMP-400 CD/MP3 Player with Remote and Wraparound Headphones

    Editorial Review

The iMP-400's design and incredible features redefine expectations for what's possible in a portable CD player. From its circuit design to its final manufacturing spec, iRiver has channeled all its efforts into delivering the best CD and MP3 sound quality. The player supports WMA and ASF formats as well as discs burned with Winamp playlists. Additional formats, such as AAC and MP3 Pro, will be supported in the future through simple firmware upgrades, by which iRiver can add and modify player features.

The iMP-400 comes with quality iRiver wrap-around headphones, offering far superior quality to standard CD player headphones. The player offers eight preset equalization curves and one user-defined curve (choose from normal, pop, rock, jazz, dance, classic, metal, U-Bass, and user EQ). Auto EQ changes automatically according to ID3 tag information, and a battery indicator lets you know when you're low. The player also performs perfectly in the face of external shocks because of iRiver's unique anti-shock algorithm, iRiverShockFree. This feature maintains supreme control over the server, so it can accurately read data even in the face of extreme vibrations, letting you listen to continuous music.

An easy-to-read, four-line LCD shows every bit of information needed, and an FM tuner comes in handy when you're traveling by tracking the frequencies to maintain reception as you move. The iMP-400 uses 16 MB Flash memory to support the display of Chinese characters (traditional/simplified)--37 languages are supported. The player also recognizes discs in Packet Write format, which enables you to use CD-RW discs like PC hard disks, offering the ease of using discs and of saving and deleting songs. Finally, the player prevents its rechargeable batteries from overcharging, and a discharge function fully discharges batteries before recharging, thereby preventing the diminishing of rechargeable battery capacity. ... the quality of the frame is wonderful it has yet to be "rusting" the remote has broken once but that was my fault when i closed the car door on it! it was an easy fix! the batteries were rechargable and theres a car adapter so if the batteries died on a road trip we could still listen to music and recharge the batteries at night when were not on the road! mom also runs a few miles in the mornings and takes the player with her she said it doesnt skip, so i was sold... (i even "borrowed" it for a while when running, myself!...^_^) and since mom doesnt listen to the raidio she doesnt have extra buttons to gripe about!^_^ well i love moms slim X and my friends have similar slim X products also so i highly suggest slim X products.
    enjoy!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall i-river quality
This is a warning about i-riverI do not have this specific i-river product, but I have purchased two of their products in the past, and the quality of both began to deteriorate within months. Both of them damaged numerous sets of headphones, wearing the connectors to the point that only one earpiece would work.On one of my players, the backlight on the LCD stopped working, and on the other the connection between the player and the USB chord no longer holds properly, preventing me from changing any of the MP3's on a 64 MB player. When I contacted the company about these problems they gave me the good ole runaround, basically vouching for the poor qaulity of their products.I will not being buy any of their products again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Designed
After much searching online for a good mp3 CD player, I decided that the iMP-400 looked like the right CD player for myself (unfortunately this was just a little before the release of the iMP-550). It had many features that appealed to me, and I have remained happy with it over the last 9 or so months.

On the upside, I have loved all the features about this player, with the ability to play mp3's, audio CD's, AND have the radio function to be the most prominent features. The svelte styling of the player has impressed many people, along with the slim size of it. I also have defiantly put it through its paces by taking it camping/hiking along with my everyday use. The layout of the remote control, although somewhat tough to learn at first, provides instant access to all of the important functions. Also impressive is the inclusion of many minor features such as the inclusion of an audio-out port to connect the player to a sound system (I have also used it to connect a second set of headphones to share music with a friend). Another is the ability to select the next track to be played with out interrupting the current song; this ability is still available during random mode. The fact that the player uses firmware has allowed updates to include new modes and features, and even a snake-style game!

On to the bashing section of my review:
One of the faults previously touched on by other reviewers is the time that this system takes to power up. When I want music, I want it NOW, not 30 seconds from now.
Recently, the remote control's center button stopped responding. By taking apart the control (and probably voiding its warranty) I determined that the cause of the problem was that the pin attached to the backside of the button to depress the capacitor had inadvertently snapped. Although annoying, the problem was easily solved with the use of some gel-like super glue.
The player turns off when it is connected to, or detached from, the AC adaptor, which means that I have to go through the long boot process again.
My final grudge (although not too much the companies fault) is that only non-protected WMA's can be played (something I only found out after I had encoded most of my music library with the protection on)

All in all, if you want a mp3 player that also plays your CDs, the iRiver series is as good as they come. But if you don't plan to use its ability to play standard CD's too often, you may be better off with a hard drive player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feature-loaded cd player--Good if you can find it cheap
I read the reviews on this CD player and was quite hesitant about buying it, but I'm glad I did. I wanted a CD player that had mp3 capability, a remote, and supported ID3 tags. This is the only CD player I have seen with all three features, and on top of that, it looks amazing.

Ok, first off, the skip protection is nowhere near as bad as the other reviews made it seem. I have not been running with it, mind you, but I have had it in my pocket walking around for a couple days with nothing more than one or two short pauses. It is, however, a slow CD player (as I can tell you, most products by Samsung--CD players, cell phones, and Digital cameras--are not the fastest on the market. But if you have patience and let it load the cd for about a minute (and don't skip songs too often), you will have no problem with the labored timing.

The remote on this is awesome--by far the best I have seen on any CD player. It's very detailed and has all sorts of cool features I don't have time to go into right now.

The headphones do suck, but that's a given. I just got some Aiwa HP-X223 off eBay for 8 bucks, and they sound great!

From my experience, the other reviewers were quite angry with the quality of their purchases, and rightly so; if I had paid retail price I would have expected more. But I got mine for a third of that on eBay, and the features blew me away--I couldn't be happier.

2-0 out of 5 stars Laggy
The cd player has a beautiful design but it lacks many things, which I expected from a Samsung product.First of all, it skips a lot.I had it lying on a desk without moving it and it still manages to skip every once in a while.Second, there is a great lag in between songs and the song stops in the middle and seems to never resume. And when the songs are changing, it makes a loud whirring noise which gets annoying. The anti-skip system is a scam.It says 960 seconds, but it's more like 9.6 seconds.I wouldn't recommend this product to others. For cell phones, get a Samsung. For a CD walkman, get a Sony or something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this if you like music
I got this Saturday afternoon and by Monday morning, I was convinced that I should return it. Thinking about taking advantage of that 920 shock protection? Think again! This shock protection (or lack of it) is a joke. I can't even walk with this or keep it in a non-90 degree horizontal position for more than 30 seconds without it skipping. And even when it is horizontal, it skips every few songs, stops playing a song halfway through, and also takes about 10-20 seconds to switch from track to track. And these headphones are terrible. For some strange reason, one ear cord is longer than the other.

    Pros:
    - Slim and fits in your pockets
    - Remote control is great and easy to use
    - Good battery life
    - Plays WMA files as well
    - Good sound features

    Cons:
    - It's impossible to play this without skipping
    - Stops playing songs halfway through and goes to another
    - Headphones are an insult to music and engineering
    - The chords are ridiculously messy and unorthodox
    - The radio tuner that's supposed to be digital is full of static
    - Does not stay true to many of the specs advertised
    - Time between songs is excessively long ... Read more

With MP3 CD compatibility, the SL-MP35 puts hours of entertainment at your fingertips, on the road, at your computer, or anywhere you want to listen. Load the player with a custom-made CD-R or CD-RW and you can organize your MP3 files into a playlist of your favorite songs or albums. The unit's display shows up to 6 characters at once; longer titles scroll from left to right for up to 30 characters to describe album, track, ID3 album, and ID3 track titles (a "~" symbol appears at the end of the title if it is longer than this).

The player was designed with a 45-second backup memory (100 seconds with MP3 files) to virtually eliminate CD skipping under normal listening conditions. You can program the SL-MP35 to play at random, in a specified order, or to repeat one song or the whole disc, letting you enjoy your favorite tunes without interruption. Panasonic's S-XBS (Extra Bass System) gives your music an added bass boost for full, powerful sound.

Panasonic's Power Last function makes 2 standard AA batteries (not included) last much longer than they would in another player, up to 30 hours--or up to 40 hours during MP3 playback. You also have the option of running the player from rechargeable batteries (Panasonic P-3GAVA/2B, not included) or from an optional AC adapter (Panasonic RP-AC46). No matter what power source you use, the auto-power-off function shuts down your player once your CD ends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something That Made Me Happy
I purchased this for $99 some 2 years ago. There are a lot of things I like about this discman and a couple of things I dislike about it.

    Strenghts:
1.A good battery life. My previous Sony cd player lasted me all of 7 hours on two AA batteries. The SL-MP35 is quite generous on battery. On an alkaline (Energiser) it can last from 25-35 hours.

2.It's not as heavy as bulky as it might look. You can carry it around if like you have gigantic pockets. It has great antishock protection. I can recall six instances of me dropping it but it's never skipped a beat. Also the button for ejection doesn't get pressed on its own like I've noticed in Samsung discmans.

3.The max. volume of this device is reached at 25units. The accompanied headphones are better than the earphones provided with the much loved iPOD. They have good clean bass sound although not meant for listeners who like to get into the music. I use Phillips earphones and the volume increase is quite substantial.

4.The Hold function is a darling especially when one needs to go out on walks or just in general. The device does make a bit of sound but then most devices do that. It never heats up and at home I prefer connecting my unit via a power outlet. It's great fun that way.

5.It plays Mp3/Audio Discs. The Audio discs volume as I have noticed is lesser than the mp3 discs. It sounds wierd considering the bitrate difference but it's true.I recommend all owners/potential buyers to keep this feature in mind. I understand a lot of us like purchasing music and listening to it but then it's maybea slight flaw. However , it also means a 150 track disc would sound better than a 15 track audio disc.

What I dislike about this mp3 discman is how slow it is. I've seen other mp3 discmans and even though it's faster in comparison , I think it's slow.It takes approx. 15 seconds for it to initialize an mp3 disc. Audio discs on the other hands is a bit faster. The volume on this could have been louder but that's expecting a bit too much. There was an accompanying tape that allowed music to be played in cars without any mp3player/cd support. It's neat but I never used it for I love my music and have a front loader mp3 player installed.

In any case,I recommend this for people who're not sure whether they would like an mp3 discman. I've seen the iPODs and I somehow do not like the idea of small box that'll contain all my songs. I'd rather change discs , burn them , tweak em...
Anyhow , that's me. Hope you found my review helpful.
    Cheers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Near to the best
I am very pleased with this player.I have found that I must stay away from Kenwood & Sony, they gave me nothing but trouble. This item, however, has been a dream. The only problem I face is the automatic resume function.Even after I have removed a CD and turned the unit off, it wants to resume at the last track played (even with a different CD.)I wish I could turn that function off.Otherwise, it has been a dream. It is nice and sturdy with lots of functions the newer models don't have.I found my unit at a usually overpriced Sam Goody type store really discounted due to it's production date (some 3 years ago).I snatched it up since it has everything I have been looking for. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Less money but good thing
I bought SL-MP35 for myself on 16th,Jan.And it just cost me 470 Yuan RMB(About 65.3USD).I chose this cause I want a CD player to learn English & German.Alought it doesn't have advanced functions, like Backlight,LCD Remote Control.I also heard some advice from other friends:They thought Panasonic product has a long play time(I saw a SONY player can sign:It can play 100Hours continuously, but its tag shows :1000 Yuan RMB is required).

So I suggest:If you don't have much money,SL-MP35 can make you feel happy & comfortable. ... Read more

Get advanced MP3-CD playback with a whopping 100 seconds of antiskip protection from this spiffy, lightweight portable. It'll play CDs and MP3-encoded CDs (CD-Rs and CD-RWs in both cases), and it comes with a multi-function remote control and an external battery pack for an additional eight hours of playback, to help get you through those super-long MP3 CDs.

Navigation is simplified through a 10-track skip button; bass boost helps compensate for bass-shy headphones and inferior-quality MP3s. This player does not support ID3 tags (which show artist and song title). Earbud headphones are included. ... Read more

Hey! Just writing to tell you people how awesome this product is. I just got this and I am really impressed. This thing just doesnt skip. It just doesnt, and I have dropped it too, but heck, it still works! It supports MP3 and CD with good quality, has all the good stuff, althought the remote is pretty [bad]. Its worth getting. Sony D-NS921F Atrac3/MP3 CD Sports Walkman
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Get durable, high-tech, Sony Sports style and hours of digital music listening with Sony's D-NS921F portable CD player. The ultraslim player includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take advantage of ATRAC3plus, Sony's proprietary music-compression technology when making custom MP3 CDs on a computer. And, though it's not designed for immersion, the Walkman offers a water-resistant design with rubber gaskets, bushings, and water-resistant seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt. A three-way control on the player's grip gives you access to Active Control playback operation during active uses.

The D-NS921F puts the best of the broadcast world at your fingertips, too, with FM/AM/TV/weather-band digital tuning. Using its 54-station preset memory (30 FM, 10 AM, four weather-band, seven TV, and three favorites), favorite stations are never more than a button away. The player also offers a three-line dot-matrix display, 14 playback modes for the ultimate in music management (repeat, shuffle, and others), and delivers up to 75 hours of continuous playback on two "AA" type batteries (not included) using ATRAC3 files (48 hours of CD audio).

ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps).

The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to a CD using ATRAC3plus compression. CD Text and ID3 tag support gives you easy access to CD Text information as well as details like song title, album title, and artist name.

Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. Bookmark playback lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Sony's two-position automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries and guards your hearing by capping your listening level. Finally, the unit's Walkman-logo headphones are Sony MDR (Micro Dynamic Receiver) type for wide dynamic range and excellent sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternitive to iPOD, If you can still find it anywhere.
This player is great, I've had it for about over a year and it works great. When I first got it the software (Sonicstage) was HORRIBLE. Over the year Sony and connect and sonicstage have updated themselves three times solving all problems I had with burning Discs with my computer (Atrac format). The radio works great. Tv Tuner works great. Mp3 Discs play great. Atrac discs now play great after the last upgrade about a month ago. I currently own the S2 Sports Minidisc/Recorder, and Ipod and this player. The Minidisc works fine but the Atrac discs sound so much better on this player that I use this player for long trips and the office. The Ipod I use for workouts because of the Size and variety of music at my fingertips. (The Ipod Battery I have to recharge about every other day so that makes it not suitable for trips) I carry about three compact discs that hold a ton of music for trips and harder workouts (the unit is durable and waterproof). I've had a ton of portables (Mindiscs 5, Cd Players
4, and an Ipod 20Gb) and I always reach for this player or the Ipod depending on the situation (Business look - discreet Ipod) For the record This unit sounds worlds better that the Ipod using the Mp3 burned discs or the Atrac burned discs (Even better!) Minidisc was a nice format but all the moving parts inside the players always seem to break very easily. The Ipod doesn't have those Issues except It can be a hassle to recharge away from home
and It isn't waterproof. This unit runs on batteries, best sounding using the Atrac discs and is damn tough and waterproof (TV, AM/FM and MP3/ATRAC). You won't find a better deal money wise. Just my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.....
I bought this player because its very hard to find something that will play mp3s *and* give you AM/FM radio. There are some times I want to jam and there are some times I want to listen to the game which requires the AM. I'm happy with the player overall, no skips or chirps in mine and it plays my CD-RW discs without complaint.

The only reason for the 4 star rating is the time it takes to move from track to track. I have many mp3s that are live performances, and the tracks are meant to be played right after one another to preserve the presentation. The player takes a good 2-3 seconds after each track to start the next one, which breaks up anything that is meant to run consistently. My Sony DVD player in my stereo rack has only a millisecond of pause when playing the mp3s. I havent tested this with a regular audio CD.

Overall though, great player. Use it everyday!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best CD-player around(good price/quality)
I bought this CD-player about 2 months ago and Im really happy with it.Sony Mexico doesnt have this product for selling in Mexico, and i dont know why, thats why i bought it via deremate.com(like ebay.com) because I liked all the features of it.

Now, I havent realized of that "chirping" until today i read these reviews. So, I put my dns921f on test: I put a MP3-full CD with songs at different constant bitrate. There I have a 3:59 duration classical guitar song recorded @ 192kbps and 44.1Khz, so I played it at the medium , and I realized that there were strange sounds (not exactly chirping, its like a quiet "ffsss" sound of0.7 secs aprox., like the sound when you change the frequency on a radio when looking for a radio station) The sounds appeared 3 times:
    @ G-protection 1:
    1:13
    2:17
    3:21
    @G-protection 2:
    1:14
    2:17
    3:22

But then I heard the entire album of that song while surfing the web and I didnt realize the sounds were there...

that's the only "but" i found for this anyway GREAT CDplayer!
i have even walked outdoor with it under heavy rain, dropped it when i was driving and I braked hard and the player flew away due to the centrifuge, hit the dashboard and fell to the floor, but the music didn't have any skip!!!!. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars BIG PROBLEM
I bought this player 2 years ago. It was working fine until suddenly one day the screen displayed UPGRADE FILE REQUIRED....the disc starts spinning really fast and then everytime it would display the same thing. Creative support also sucks too...

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful product, dreadful support
I had trouble with this player immediately after buying it. It would not play the WMA's and MP3's properly. When I reported the problem, the tech people said to burn the files on separate CD's. So, I had to go through my music files and make separate CD's for each format. Then about two months later, the player quit working altogether and would only show a "Low Battery" message on the screen. When I told Tech Support about this, they said to send it back to them for evaluation. It was out of the ridiculously short 90-day warranty period, but I was told that the original problem was one that should have been and could have been repaired by Tech Support. Their only solution to the "Low Battery" problem was for me to buy a new player. The Customer Service Department was appallingly disorganized, with no one representative handling the service. Each time I contacted them, another person would get involved, and I would need to repeat everything that had been done to that point with the new person. Each day, even though I was calling to speak with people in the support department, I would receive phone messages from them telling me that I needed to call to discuss the problem concerning the player, and I finally received a letter saying that they were planning to dispose of my player if I didn't contact them within 5 days. In the end, I just told them to forget it and send it back to me. They did not stand behind their product and were even very rude when talking with me. Besides all of these problems, the rebate that was offered was a hassle to get. By the time I finally received the rebate, the player had quit working for good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Old Time Radio mp3's...
As a collector of Old time Radio shows in mp3 format, I am always looking for new products that will accomodate the 32kbps mono format that has become the standard for OTR. At that bitrate, we can fit 100+ 30 minute programs on a single CD. I am happy to report that this unit (RCD128) will indeed read and play 32kbps files with no problem. The acceptable range listed in the manual is 32-320 kbps.SOUND QUALITY is quite good for OTR considering the original recordings are not always that great to begin with. Voice reproduction is accurate and well-defined. Music lovers may find the bass thin, but this is a plus for OTR, allowing the actors dialog to come through clearly. For under $50, this is a good economical choice for OTR fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Unit
Hi, I bought one of this for my little sister, she enjoys it every day, and since then, she has all of her collection of CDs in a single hand of MP3 CDs... (Wich of course she ask me to rip, but cdparanoia, lame and perl, are a top combination for this task!)

I had also played a little with it, using my MP3 collections, and they sound very nice... I think it is great unit, so sorry that it cannot play Ogg Vorbis... But for the features a high school girl might expect, it seems to be a top of the list product...

4-0 out of 5 stars OTR fans need this
A more than reasonable price for one of the very few of its kind. Old time radio programs are great on mp3 and have rendered my cassette collection to the back shelf.mp3's are so much cheaper and so easy to store. It has a great remote and presets. The most significant downside is poor AM reception. ... Read more

Enjoy music with the freedom that comes from MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) CD playback, extended battery life, and high-powered anti-skip technology with Panasonic's SL-MP80. The company's exclusive No-Skip technology helps prevent interruptions from jostling during active use. No Skip's unique construction uses rubber brushings to absorb shock, while an anti-skip mechanism and an anti-skip digital servo further prevent read errors. A 48-second memory reserve provides added back up.

Now, battery changes will be fewer and farther between thanks to Panasonic's PowerLast high-efficiency power system, which combines an efficient motor with low-load circuitry for playback time of up to 48 hours on two AA batteries (during MP3/WMA playback). CD playback abilities include ID3 tag support (displays artist names and song titles with properly formatted sound files), 24-track random-access programming; repeat and resume (which picks up where the unit left off when last stopped); and skip/search and memory/recall. A hold switch prevents accidental starting, stopping, or track skipping during use or transport. The unit boasts a thin design with operation keys and LCD laid out logically on its top cover. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but unimpressive
I bought this as a gift and I was looking for something less geeky than the iRiver ChromeX, which was the first choice. I just wanted a player that got the basics right and didn't involve dozens of settings. The brand name was there, I knew it was made in Japan, and the price suggested good quality for the features you get.

Based on my experience of the few weeks while it was still in my hands, my impression of this player is generally positive. The sound quality is good. I didn't look at the watch, but battery life was totally decent. The antiskip protection has passed several tests which have probably been more strenuous than real-life situations. And unless you're a geek, this player has pretty much all the features that you will need. I bought it last year, it's still being used and I haven't heard complaints so far.

There are a few things about it that I didn't like. I will mention them in order of their importance.

First, the lack of the fast forward and rewind functions while playing MP3s. I knew about it from the manual, prior to purchase, but I underestimated how important these functions are. It may vary with your listening habits, but if you listen to audiobooks or if you find yourself frequently skipping back and forth in a music track, this is not the player for you. Again, it only applies to MP3. Fast forward and rewind does work for audio CDs.

Another issue was the occasional overlapping between the end of one track and the beginning of the next when playing MP3s, but this happened randomly and it may have something to do with the quality of the CD.

A shortcoming that seems to be common to many CD-MP3 players are the "clicks" presumably generated by the buffering/antiskip algorithms. This player makes no exception. The clicks are there, very weak but still audible. They tend to occur when silence follows sound abruptly. If you pay attention, you will hear them at the end of music tracks. You may notice them if you listen to voice recordings even without paying attention. But you may not care about this. Audiophiles probably don't expect much from a portable player.

The browsing of MP3 CDs is limited to jumping by track or by folder/album. CDs with deep directory trees are not easy to browse, but otherwise you'll be fine.

The design is okay, but there's nothing "slick" about it. A little dull and bulky, actually. No back light on the LCD display, which makes it harder to use in the dark.

The included headphones have a wide spectrum, but they accentuate lower frequencies, which I find unnecessary, since the player itself has a bass-enhancing mode. However, many people like that, and if you don't, you can always replace the headphones.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible piece of electronics ! ! !
    (...).

This CD player is amazing for one simple reason:you can fit up to 15-17 CDs worth of music on it.I am fairly experienced with computers--I used Windows Media Player to 'rip' songs from 11 CDs from my CD collection, then burned them to ONE CD.Windows Media Player was able to automatically download song/album information using CDDB--navigating from CD to CD and within each virtual CD is a breeze.Now--I *have* put my MP3s onto a CD and I will acknowledge that many, many mp3s will fit onto a single CD.However, I am amazed that so many MORE WMAs will fit onto the same CD.The manual recommends ripping songs at 96kbps and this is fine for me.I notice no sound degradation at all.

    The sound is very good.(...)

This is a very cool piece of technology and I am very pleased with the sound--but I am so over-the-edge happy about the WMA format and functionality.

    This is a must-get.

3-0 out of 5 stars MISLEADING , but still good in otherways.
Let me first say I am no PC Wiz as it were, and This is my first CD player that I have brought that can play WMA AND MP3'S.
All that being said, let me tell you why I have given this only three stars.
I have a PC that has WINDOWS ME LET ME MAKE THAT CLEAR and try as I might, and I had verrrrrrrrry good help doing so. THIS CD PLAYER DOES NOT---- LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN, DOES NOT!!!! SHOW ID TAGS if you are using WINDOWS ME. XP is a different story and it should work fine for you. I brought this model because it can play just about anything you put in it, MP3, WMA, CDRW AND CDR.
BUT not being able to have the ID TAGS show is a real let down.I really don't need the display screen without it doing that so. It should have made things CLEAR and not just say it works with WINDOWS. RATHER IT SHOULD SAY , IT SHOWS ID TAGS WITH WINDOWS XP.

Somethings you just need to see and buy in a store to learn all the hidden facts, a lesson learned for me. I hope this helps you. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars [Bad] User Interface for MP3
This item has the worst user interface for mp3 files that I've ever seen. It does work as advertised, hence the two stars, but the search function rarely works and the buttons are confusing at best. Avoid.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for the price
(...). I wasn't expecting it to be perfect and it's not. It won't play all MP3 files. I seem to have the most trouble with VBR encoded files but I've also seen some CBR files that won't play. Some of the controls on the player don't always work as advrtised. For example skipping folders works sometimes but not always. It seems like they rushed this one to market a little soon. But if you do a little testing with the unit up front and you're careful with how you encode your files, it's ok for the price I guess. ... Read more

Memorex MPD8505CP Personal CD/MP3 Player with 45 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection

    Editorial Review

This shiny little unit is not your garden-variety cigarette-lighter-powered portable CD player, however much it resembles one. No, this player gives you something more: the ability to listen to MP3-encoded CDs, which, when you do the math, works out to far more megabytes for the buck than you'd get in a dedicated MP3 player.

Accommodating standard CDs as well as CD-Rs or CD-RWs brimming with MP3 or .WAV audio files, the Memorex MPD8505CP MP3-CD player packs high technology into a low-lying music player, giving you beck-and-call access to literally hours of music from a single MP3-encoded CD. And did we mention that it's far cheaper than any of its name-brand competition?

Each of the player's multifunction control buttons is used for standard CD controls like Play, Pause, Skip, or Stop, as well as programming functions such as File/Directory, File Search, Display, and the numbers and letters of the alphabet. That's right--unlike other MP3 CD players, this one shows track and artist information, and lets you add it as well. Unfortunately, the buttons aren't clustered together for ready access, but configured in an eleven-button semi-circle to memorize.

Imperceptive controls with multiple functions demand a good study of the manual to guide you through searching and programming. You'll also need to spend some time learning and remembering things like stop" also means "off", and other such hidden functions.

It also seems that due to the MP3 chip, start-up time is slower than on standard CD players. After loading a CD, we had to wait at least 10 seconds to be able to play, search, or adjust any of the controls. Meanwhile, the dark LCD display screen remains blank while you wonder if the unit is on or if the CD has been loaded correctly. Then, it takes an additional 10 to 15 seconds for it to play. While not a huge inconvenience, a portable unit for car use should react quickly to minimize the time spent fiddling with it.

The DBBS (Dynamic Bass Boost System) offers impressive bass reinforcement. The high end is bright and clear, although you'll hear some hiss with quieter tracks or during music featuring a soloist.

A 45-second "electronic skip protection" feature lets you use the Memorex on road trips, bus rides, or brisk walks, though we did experience occasional skips even on relatively sedate bus rides.

Memorex includes a complete car kit, a nice convenience. But despite its quirks (and despite its bulky and awkward design), this Memorex piece can be a good way to take music along any journey, long or short--especially when used with a good set of headphones. --Zoe Knight

4-0 out of 5 stars Great unit with some flaws
For the price that I got (under $40) it was a very nice unit. I've had the unit for over six months now and so far, only some skipping occur, but not much at all. The skippings usually seem quite random, and doesn't happen because th eunit is being moved or anything like that. The unit I have contians the suffix A sticker.

The car kit that came with mine, though, is a little weird. At times the volume will be too soft for no reason, but mostly they all worked great.

The only things I really don't like about this unit are 1) the display LCD isn't backlit, making reading practically impossible at night, and 2) the search option is not very user friendly, and the unit doesn't seem to respond too well to it.

Over all, I give it 4 stars, for its price, and that it hadn't died on me yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
At first this seemed like a decent CD player. The headphones that come with it are pretty lame but fortunately I had another pair of my own. It's somewhat ugly and bulky but not unbearable. The search feature is very handy, especially when you've got MP3 CDs with 100+ tracks; it was very easy to find the song I wanted.

However the skip protection was disappointing from the beginning. Walking caused several skips per song and it would sometimes skip in the car. Don't even think about doing anything more than that with this player; it'll skip like crazy and drive you crazy. The worst thing, though, was that a few months after I started listening to it frequently it broke to the point where it now skips every few seconds when it's just sitting on my desk (with both regular and mp3 CDs). This happened after I had taken it on a few plane rides, so maybe that had something to do with it, although I'm not really sure how. Whatever happened, it's too annoying to listen to now.

Despite the nifty search function, I wouldn't recommend this CD player. It's got a lot of flaws and you can probably find something much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for a Bargain!!
This player is one of the best on the market for the money. It is rugged and plays regular CD's, CD-R's, and MP3's!! I get over 100 mp3s on one CD. I like to put it on shuffle play...it's like having your own jukebox with all your own favorite songs. Get one!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best portable music device *for my purposes*
If your going to buy a minidisc make sure you've done your research. This minidisc has been perfect for me but I made sure it did what I wanted first. It's tiny.Marginally bigger than a minidisc in it's case and really lightweight.I think this has been acheived by moving all the battery charging function into the supplied cradle. The headphones are crap, replace them (senheisser earbuds are good), although that's true with most portable players. The big saving grace is the battery life.About 40 hours with music recorded in LP2 mode, this means you can get 160 minutes of music on the minidisc. This is only using the internal rechargeable battery, add an alkaline and it jumps to 120 hours! All this and shock protection too, you can get it to jump if you shake it continuously for 40 seconds but I haven't manged that even when running with it.

It's play only so you'll need a minidisc recorder as well. The best recorders to get are the NetMD ones, which allows you to make a great quality copy of your mp3's CD's etc from the computer straight to minidisc. The big drawback of this is that as it's a sony proprietry format your stuck with Sony's terrible software to do it.It works ok though just a few irritating functions and once you've built up a bit of a library you should be golden.Have a look at minidisc dot org for some good reviews and hopefully if someone breaks the NetMD format you might get some decent software to copy songs over too......

4-0 out of 5 stars Minidisc Versus CD/Mp3 Player
I whole heartedly agree with the above statement stressing that a CD/Mp3 capable player can fit a much greater deal of music onto the one cd compared to the Minidisc's offering of 74mins or sometimes the higher capacity 80min.

However i disagree with the fact that LP4 compression has such a 'dramatic' effect upon the qulity of the music, especially through headphones. The Minidisc has great versitility, and I believe the main reason why people choose to buy minidisc players over CD/Mp3 players is the sheer fact of 'portability' and music on the move, a minidisc unit is a great deal smaller than any CD player...

However i do agree that a newer version of minidisc unit such as the NetMD are a much better investment to take advantage ofUSB connection for 32x faster than real time recording and antrac3, mp3, wma and wav compatability.
