Olympus Stylus 300 3.2 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

    Editorial Review

The Olympus Stylus 300 is perhaps the best go-anywhere point-and-shoot digital camera, thanks to its all-metal, weatherproof exterior. Easy on the eyes and comfortable in the hand, the Stylus 300 can also withstand water splashes, driving rain, and windy snowstorms. And though it's not waterproof, you can add the optional PT-016 underwater case for diving photos down to 130 feet underwater.

    The Olympus Stylus 300
Weatherproof design and an all-metal exterior allow you to use the Stylus 300 in conditions from driving rain to windy snowstorms.
While not as "Elph-in" as some other compact digital cameras, the Stylus 300 is easily pocketable for on-the-go photo fun, from sightseeing to impromptu get-togethers. It’s also very quick to respond on start-up. Just slide open the clam-shell cover, and the Stylus 300 is ready to snap pics in about 3 seconds.

The Stylus 300 is made for automatic point-and-shoot possibilities, and the camera offers some basic scene modes (landscape, night, portrait, and self-portrait) and white balance settings (daylight, overcast, tungsten, and fluorescent). The menu system accessed through the 1.5-inch LCD continues the Olympus tradition of a well-mapped-out software system.

    The Olympus Stylus 300
The Stylus 300 is just the right size--compact enough to carry anywhere, but not so small that it's hard to operate.
We were quite happy with the exterior, providing a lot of area from the right side of the camera to the lens, which helped to eliminate fingers getting in the way of the lens. Additionally, the shutter button at the top of the camera was nicely sizeable for our chunky fingers. We were a bit disappointed, though, with the size and slipperiness of the function buttons on the back of the Stylus--the all-metal exterior was just too smooth and the buttons weren't rubbery enough.

With the 3.2-megapixel resolution, you’ll be able to capture enough image detail to print decent 11 by 14 print enlargements. But the best thing about more pixels is the amount of stored pixel information, which enabled us to crop images on our PC without losing much clarity or sharpness. At the highest quality setting, you’ll get 2,048 x 1,536 pixel images, but you can also step down to lower pixel ranges--from 1,600 x 1,200 to 640 x 480.

You can also record small QuickTime videos, though we found the movie mode to be fairly basic compared to some of the other new releases of 2003. Since there’s no built-in microphone, your movies will be silent, and you can’t utilize the zoom while filming. Choose between 320 x 240 for 16 seconds and 160 x 120 for 40 seconds.

If you’re looking for pure point-and-shoot pleasure, the Stylus 300 is the camera for you. It’s nicely automated and ready to snap pics in a flash. We were also quite happy with the battery life, though you might want to invest in an additional battery (model LI-12B) as well as a higher-capacity XD card for safety's sake. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

4-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages
I am a freelance writer and when I can't get a photographer to come with me on jobs, I have to take photos myself. This is where my Stylus 300 comes into play. The editor of one of the magazines I work for was very impressed by the quality of this camera. Some of the photos I have taken with it have been published in various publications. <br /> <br /> The only con I have is that the quality of photographs taken indoors with poor lighting are not very good. <br /> <br /> In addition, this camera is perfect for me due to the style and size. I don't have to lug around a huge camera bag with it, I can just put it into my jacket pocket. This came in handy during a recent ski trip. I would and have recommended this model to friends and family.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor design and performance
The camera takes reasonably good pictures when it works, however the basic design and construction make it unreliable. Olympus markets the Stylus as a tough camera suitable for outdoors however the operating design is poor. Notably the battery compartment is where your thumb holds the camera, frequently opening the battery door and interrupting operation of the camera. The power ON/OFF switch is under the sliding cover. It is very sensitive and failed within 9 month. Olympus did a poor job with this design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for a beginner
As the first time digital camera buyer, I loved the price and size. Photos are as good as it ought to be (IMHO, this is a given - Olympus is a name to reckon with in the world of imaging). Photos taken by Canon and Olympus looked the same.

Pros - It is sexy and beautiful (the metal case is really cool), very attractive size (fits in my shirt pocket), great battery life (have charged only once so far - I have clicked over 50-60 photos so far), rugged (I do not carry it in a camera pouch), easy interface (very intuitive - on the contrary, found Canon to be a bit complicated), media is xD Card (great size compared to the bulky CompactFlash); xD Card is also is superfast.

Cons - The only one I can think of - xD Card is expensive - I had to pay about $40 for an Olympus 256 MB xD Card on eBay.

KitchenAid KSM110PS Custom 300-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, Metallic Chrome
    by KitchenAid
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $349.99

    Editorial Review

KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 300 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Having lots of fun...
I always wanted to check one of this things out, but found that the price was a bit steep thats until I got an Amazon Gold Box offer and I decided to take the plunge.

As soon as I got the mixer I took it out, hand washed the bowls and the attachments (everything is dishwasher safe, except the whip attachment) and I was ready to go.

So far, after 5 loaf of bread, 12 pizzas, and dozens of cookies Im still looking for more stuff to do.

The set includes a handy booklet that has some great recipes.

Go ahead try it, you will not regret it!

I have practically everything that KitchenAid makes. They are, without a doubt, the most beautiful kitchen appliances you can ever own.I leave them on the counter so they'll be easy to get to, and also because they look so darned good! (Mine are Empire Red.) They are so well made and durable. I will never have to buy another mixer, toaster, blender or food processor again! Did I mention EASY to use? And the mixer is so versatile with all the attachments. You can grate cheese, stuff sausage, make pasta, or knead dough - all with one machine! I highly recommend anything these folks make. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars M A S T E R P I E C E !I N D I S P E N S A B L E !
It's been a long time since I had the idea of writing a review about this album.About this extraordinary duet session between Duke and Ray Brown, recorded December 5,1972.One of the very few records featuring the "piano player of the band", as he loved to call himself. At this time,Duke was 73,and it was one of his last recording sessions;he died one and a half year later,May 24,1974.Ray Brown was 46 (born October 13,1926).Of course, this meeting between two incredible giants is a superlative session;but tonight I may not be totally objective, because the colossus of bass,Ray Brown, died a few days ago,July 2,2002,at 75.
Ray Brown. The greatest sound that ever came out of a bass, with Mingus,Jimmy Blanton and Walter Page ("things ain't what it used to be").A complete rhythm section made of one man.A nightmare for every bass player.Or a model,an icon,as you wish.More than fifty years of musical career. He played with EVERYBODY.And also married Ella Fitzgerald. His style came straight from Jimmy Blanton ("John Hardy's wife","jumpin' punkins" recorded by Duke with Blanton,1941).Jimmy Blanton (1921-1942),only 21 years of life for the guy who gave Duke Ellington's band a stratospheric dimension.
We often speak about geniuses playing trumpet, saxophones or piano,or even drums;there are also geniuses on bass.Ray was one of them.He seemed to be indestructible, allways playing, allways on the road. But,as Reverend Gary Davis sang, death don't have no mercy in this land, and today we all have lost someone we loved.I hope he'll have a great time upstairs, meeting Bird,Stitt,Bud,Ella,Duke and all of his friends. But for us,his loss is as terrific as Tommy Flanagan's not so long ago.
I'll play this record several times tonight.I don't care,I don't have to work tomorrow.I can spend my night listening to the magical empathy between Duke and Ray,to this exceptionnal music they recorded thirty years ago.
It happened in Indianapolis,July 2;after playing golf (Ray Brown was a talented golf player, like Teddy Edwards and Sir Charles Thompson),Ray went to his hotel room to take a nap before his concert. He never wake up.So long,Mr Ray Brown, and thanks a million.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one's for Ray
The photos of Duke accompanying this album were so unsettling I tabled playing it until recently. Several months prior to the recording I had spoken with Duke up close, received two on-the-cheek kisses from him along with an "I Love You Madly," and he did not appear nearly as decrepit as he does here, among the very last recordings that he would make.

The album was released a year after Duke's death, but with Ray Brown's passing it's a valedictory of sorts to the only bassist besides Blanton who would share a recording session with Duke exclusively. Listening to the album now, I can attest that it's a fitting memorial to all three. Ray is stronger (if that's possible) than ever--supplying mammoth cushions of sound in support of Ellington's harmonies as well as taking on at least as much of the melodic load as Ellington. If there are any doubts about who is the quintessential bass player over the past 55 years, this recording should erase them. And Ellington's genius, though merely referenced, is more evident on this session than on either of the recordings he made with Coltrane and Mingus/Roach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb duo outing by two geniuses
This album was created in the early 1970's when Norman Granz, the music impresario who founded the Verve label and the Jazz at the Philharmonicconcert series in the 50's, started a new label called Pablo. He wentaround recording many giants of jazz in solo, duo and small group settings. Most are products of pure joy -- great musicians getting out of theirnormal routines and stretching out on tunes they loved.

This is noexception. It captures Duke Ellington in a (fairly) rare duo setting, playing songs he is associated with, with the great jazz bassist Ray Brown, one of the pioneers of great jazz bass. The title -- "This One's forBlanton" -- refers to the great Jimmy Blanton, who played with theDuke Ellington orchestra in the 1940's and who was an inspiration to peoplelike Ray Brown.Hearing Ellington and Brown together is an amazingexperience, as you hear two master instrumentalists deliver the essence ofsongs normally associated with a full jazz orchestra. The first half of theCD is Ellington standards, beautifully delivered. The last half is a suiteEllington wrote just for this occasion (I think), a superb little creationthat really gives Ray Brown a stretch out and play with all of the colorsthat a string bass can deliver. Don't buy this as your first Ellington CD(get the Webster/Blanton CD or The Great Paris Concert), but if you likeEllington and/or jazz bass at all you need this for a different twist onthe Ellington legacy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for busy people and families
This product is great. We now have two. Transferring shows between them or to the computer is a breeze. Last Thanksgiving we had a slideshow of all of the pictures we'd taken in the last year showing on our TV in the background. This was a hit with everyone, especially with family we don't see often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, problems with product, lots of hidden gotchas
I never had a DVR (aside from my computer) before, so when I finally managed to get my Tivo all hooked up, I was really impressed. I especially love the "Season Pass" feature which will pick out all the times your favorites program airs, and let you schedule recording for all of them in a few clicks.

    But then the headaches began...

(1.) First of all, how many of us have the telephone line near our TVs? Normally, the TV and electronic gadgets are on one side of the room, and the phone is on the other - right? Tivo needs a phone line to get it's program information - at least initially. So if your house is configured like mine, be prepared to have phone line extensions strewn all across your living room while you spend up to a day downloading and installing all the program information by phone.

So of course, I almost began to drool when I read in the Manual that you can actually connect the Tivo to your local or wireless network.

(2.) Problem is, you most likely will NOT be able to connect your Tivo to your local or wireless network. I took Tivo's own approved list of hardware (direct network adapters or wireless receivers) to my local geek toy store, and bought the top recommended networking connection on the list. That didn't work, so I returned it and bought the next recommended item on Tivo's list. That didn't work either, so over the course of the next two weeks I tried three (yes, 3) more. Nothing. I finally gave up, and had to buy a long extension cord for my phone line and install it more perminent-like.

(3.) The main reason I'm here today, is because I found this page while searching for an explanation to the weird high pitched whistle noise my Tivo began making last night (after only 2 months of ownership). Turns out this is apparently an increasingly common problem - which I never heard of until today - and even more unfortunately seems to indicate that my Tivo will be totally dead in the next few days. Right now, it's literally delaying everything I do (trying to view my cable box's program guide, etc) by 30 seconds or more (the normal lag time should be around 1 or 2 seconds)

So, since I've already paid for the lifetime membership, I'm now searching for a relatively cheap way I can fix the problem myself. Do I need to replace the harddrive, the case fans, ..or what? By the way, if Tivo goes out of business, how will I get my program guide? Tivo doesn't grab the FREE TV Guide data from your cable like the no-subscription-required Panasonics can.

(4.) Oh, and also wanted to warn people about one more thing that only starts happening after you've had your Tivo for a few weeks - which is actually intentional on the part of Tivo - but which isn't mentioned anywhere in any of their manuals or documentation, for obvious reasons...

After a few weeks (if your Tivo still works), you'll start to get little on-screen pop-up alerts RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAM which stay there for atleast 30 seconds until you click it or patiently wait for it to go away. And what are these prompts? ADVERTISING which actually is made to look like a really important subscriber announcement from Tivo. Maybe it's important to THEM, but I'd rather NOT see it in the middle of my TV screen. Actually, that's yet another example of Tivo's dumb implimentation: You'll only see this advertising if you're watching live TV instead of the recorded programming... and since most people with Tivos are watching the recorded programs instead of live TV, Tivo's sponsors are paying for ads that few people will ever see... Great business ideas - yes?)

In addition to these on-screen ads which interrupt your viewing, when you go to your Tivo menu, you'll find atleast TWO links to advertisements. The really bad thing about these links in particular is that they are positioned in the place where your other normal Tivo menu options are listed. So instead of selecting your "To Do List" or upcoming recordings, you might accidently find yourself watching a series of advertisements - WHICH YOU CANNOT DELETE OR REMOVE.

OK, so that's all I have to say at this point. Seems to me that Tivo had a great idea, but terrible implimentation. I don't know about their customer service, but I probably also won't even bother, if it's going to cost me $100 to $150 to ship them back their own defective product anyway.

If I can't fix the Tivo, and I'm not in the mood to pay double-or-triple in trying to get it fixed, then it's apparently just become one nice looking but useless paperweight... to which I have a lifetime subscription.

    Editorial Review

Canon's EOS-10D 6.3-megapixel digital SLR builds on the strengths of the award-winning EOS-D60 and offers a range of improvements to both the camera's design and its feature set. It offers a seven-point wide-area autofocus system, fast 3-frames-per-second burst rate, and an ergonomic, super-tough magnesium alloy body shell.

The 6.3-million effective pixel CMOS sensor--providing up to 3,072 x 2,048 pixels--is supported by Canon's unique high-power DIGital Imaging Core (DIGIC) processor. The speed at which the DIGIC processor works has allowed Canon to extend the number of full resolution images in burst sequences to nine, at a rate of 3 frames per second. As well as improved speed, DIGIC also helps produce more accurate color rendition while reducing image noise.

The metering system, using the newest metering algorithm available and a 35-zone evaluative metering system linked to all seven focus points, offers improved exposure consistency and stability. A range covering ISO 100 to 1,600 offers high-quality images across a very broad spectrum of shooting conditions. Photographers working in particularly poor light may also take advantage of an option to extend this range to ISO 3,200.

The EOS-10D is the first digital SLR camera to feature direct printing. Linking via a USB cable, you can make prints immediately from any of Canon's range of compatible bubble jet or CPprinters--including the S830D, S530D, and CP-100--without the need to connect to a computer. Controls within the camera's own menu system allow you to choose print quantity, size, and image cropping. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Solid Product
The controls are a little complicated to get used to, especially the all-manual settings -- which should by definition be easy to use -- but overall this camera is very rugged and very capable. After I bought it, I took the D10 to Budapest, Hungary.I had a great view of the Danube and set my camera up for night shots. It did a brilliant job.How about this:take a digital night shot (use the largest image size possible), use a 300mm lense and blow the results up to 24x30 through Shutterfly.com. Image remained amazingly sharp. Colors were fantastic. The camera made it easy to look like a pro. The only gripe I have with this camera is that I wish it had a black and white setting like other less expensive Canon digitals, but this can be overcome with software so it's not a huge issue. The price is great, it has a magnesium body (vs. the Rebel's plastic body). You get a lot of the D1/D20/D30, without the cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, one major flaw
I have had this camera for about 6 months.I love digital cameras, but my early sony'swere too slow. This camera is very very fast. The detail is incredible.I have taken thousands of photos and rarely have any that are under exposed.probably one in two hundred. This would be even less if I were more competent.

The one major short coming I have had with this camera is that it locks up.I will get the display "PA-A" and it won't go away. This is generally only displayed when I first turn the camera on and it last only a split second.Othertimes, however, this message pops up in the middle of shoots and locks up the camera. The fix is a quick removal of the battery from its contacts.I have gotten pretty fast at it, but this should never be an issue.I have heard that this is a problem with the new 20D as well. That is not very reassuring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent technology, one big disappointment
Since there are tons of rave reviews about the features of this camera, I won't bother you with the details. Instead, I will tell you about the one HUGE letdown of this camera and the likes (Rebel, 20D): the 1.6x focal length factor. This means my dear 28-105 lens is now a sorry 45-170. To recoup the loss I'd have to spend $700 on a 17-40 4.0 lens. This is a consequence of using a small CCD. Cameras like the 1D with full-size 35mm CCD sell for over $4,000. I cannot wait for that price to go down. I also cannot help to wonder whether the focal reading of the Speedlite flashes will be correct (I own a 540EZ and discovered with dismay that it doesn't work in these cameras).

I look at my A2 (still infatuated with it) and I wonder if I did the right thing. I think I will keep it around for a while, just in case... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Until You Need Support
I had this device for a little bit over a year, and I like most people didn't opt for the extended warranty. In short, it died as soon as the warranty expired. It's the way hardware is and I'm fine with that, but Apple's support wanted to charge me $250 to have it repaired/replaced.That is almost the same amount as a new one, and certainly more than most of their competitors. When it worked, it was great; a device I truly enjoyed, but once it starts having issues, you better look for another device; Apple wont be of much help you.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so bad
not so bad, good amount of memory, fair battery, decent sound.overall a-okay.problems: battery (not replaceable) & loses charge overtime.Go here for a free 20Gb ipod:

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor compatability for all the hype
While the iPod is great for the amount of music you can store on it, Apple has done a poor job with creating a product that lasts. The battery life is minimal (less than 4 hours and I've had it for less than a year), and it costs you $99 to send your product to Apple to have a new battery installed!I'm told you can change the battery for cheaper yourself, but it nullifies the warranty (and on such an expensive electronic, that is not too prudent). The program Apple supplies to be able to add music to your iPod (iTunes) is also full of poorly-chosen options. It comes with an auto-sync option, which at first sounds appealing, but later proves to be more trouble than it's worth.Having attempted to clear my library in the program, iTunes proceeded to delete all my music & recordings from my computer (many of which I cannot replace). If I were to try to sync my iPod to my computer at this point, the auto-sync feature would replace all my playlists with empty ones. After calling Apple, I found out that there is a 10-15 SECOND window in which I MAY be able to turn-off the auto-sync prior to losing all my iPod files. If, however, I am too slow, or my computer doesn't respond fast enough, I lose everything on the iPod as well.
After all that hassle, the good points of the iPod are it's portability (small size) and it's capacity to hold a lot of music/recordings.I hear there are also some calendar and address book features avaliable to Mac users, but not to PC users. ... Read more

Durable fiberglass-nylon handles--they fit the hand snugly andare subtly pebble grained to resist slipping when wet--distinguishGrand Prix knives from W&uuml;sthof's other cutlery lines. OtherwiseGrand Prix knives are identical to other W&uuml;sthof knives, embodyingall the virtues that have earned the German manufacturer world renown. The principal parts of a W&uuml;sthof knife--blade, bolster, andtang--are forged from a single piece of high-carbon stainless steel, and theblade is precisely tapered from bolster to tip and from back tohand-honed edge. The blades and beautifully formed bolsters are not as thickas on some knives. As a result, despite their heft, strength, anddurability, W&uuml;sthof knives are pleasingly delicate and marvelouslybalanced in action.

The four knives in this set exemplify control while providing a cookwith the essentials: an 8-inch cook's knife (chef's knife) for rockingthrough chopping and mincing tasks; a 6-inch sandwich knife for myriadslicing and cutting needs; a 7-inch serrated bread knife for crustyloaves; and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for fruits and vegetables. Theset also includes a sharpening steel for keeping knife edges aligned, kitchen shears, and an oak block with three extra knife slots to storeeverything on the counter within reach. Like all fine cutlery, theknives should be hand washed. --Fred Brack

Need a good set of knives? You came to the right place. They're amazingly sharp so beware!!No more cutting in a sawing motion, just go up down up down for finely chopped fruits and vegetables.Prep time is cut in half, so cooking is actually fun now.

What are you waiting for?Add this to your cart, you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A star in large galaxy of knives!
I own and have tried a number of knives from the standard cheapo's to designer hand-made French knives, and these fill a large general purpose niche. These knives are very sharp (especially after using the sharpening tool) and approach the sharpness of my Kyocera Ceramic knives.Ceramic knives are extremely sharp and hard, but suffer from brittleness and need custom resharpening efforts. The Wusthof knives are well made German "tools" that will hold-up to a certain amount of abuse. For more abuse, I resort to my cheapo knives to cut open packages of food, wine bottle foil, etc..They are handsome and do have a high-tech appeal but do not approach the beauty of some French knives. The French knives have inlaid wood handles and have a "mirror" finish (which will scratch even with a plastic scrubber), but are limited to tableware use only.
You must be extremely careful not to get ripped-off with a "imitation" German knife. Most knives use a brand-name, but are really made in China. The descriptions and inflated prices can be very misleading.Even with all my research, I was not sure that I had made a wise choice until I looked at these knives and started to use them. Please do the same, since things change all the time and "outsourcing" is all the rage!
Anyway, in summary, these knives are great...so get them before they don't exist!

5-0 out of 5 stars Precision worth the price
I have had a set of Wusthof Grand Prix knives for about four years now and I could not be more pleased with their performance, durability, and quality. From the professional chef to the home cook looking for quality to last a lifetime; these knives accentuate the way in which you will prepare meals for a lifetime. The folded stainless steel is of the highest quality available in the industry, and it shows in how long they keep their edge.As with all straight edge knives; never put in a dishwasher, cut on stone or metal surfaces and they will stay in top form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars least expensive cookware - in the long run...
if you think about the life-cycle cost of this product, it is a far better value than any other cookware on the market. You can saute, deep-fat fry, roast, boil, braise, etc., etc. in this thing.should you happen to "overcook" (burn) an item - it is incredibly easy to clean without scubbing by soaking overnight in hot, soapy water.should you have to return the item under warranty (unlikely, but I have had to return one), the service is excellent and timely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Le Creuset Winner!
Ah, the big red pot!Every serious cook "must have" at least one, and this one is the perfect size.Heavy, but GREAT cooking, easy cleanup...and it looks fabulous to boot.Your friends will be green with envy.Get one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
This is my 3rd piece of le creuset. After using the 4 1/2 quart soup pan as an all purpose pan, I decided to buy this for some of the larger dishes we make.

It turned out a good purchase, especially with some of the dishes that need some sauteeing and baking. Thelid is quite heavy and fits well, which cuts down the cooking time with some pressure cooking effect if you dont open the lid too often. The flavor and taste offood... according to my wife, is the same as the stainless steel cookware I used before, but my kids say is better.

I paid $115 for this and got a bonus Le Creuset 10-Inch Skillet free. Even with this bonus offer, I think it is fairly pricey, but offers good value for the money. ... Read more

Early Adopters Pick: October 2002. The world’s only true cyclonic vacuum, generating 100,000 g of centrifugal force and pulling dirt into an indestructible canister made from the same material used for crash helmets.

Named for both its power and its ruthless approach to pet hair problems, the Dyson DC07 Animal upright is a piece of engineering wizardry designed by James Dyson, the inventor of cyclonic vacuums. A hit in Europe for years, Dyson vacuums are new to the American market. At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allergens. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine.

Suitable for bare floors and carpets, the Dyson upright features a 14-inch cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles. A foot pedal switches off the brush roll for bare floors, and the nozzle automatically adjusts for various carpet heights. For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum also comes with a cleverly stowed, 17-foot quick-release hose with a reversible extension-wand handle. Onboard accessories include a crevice tool, a dusting brush, an upholstery attachment, and the Animal turbo tool. Designed for lint and stubborn pet hair, the turbo tool features an air-powered brush bar to extract hair from furniture, stairs, pet beds, cars, and other tight spaces.

Made from the same material used in crash helmets, the vacuum is unquestionably durable. Plus, the design only puts 4 pounds of weight on the handle, so pushing and turning is easy. This model comes with a 35-foot power cord and a limited two-year household warranty. It also includes a carpet care kit--a canister of Groom Zorb odor-absorbent carpet cleaning powder and a bottle of Dyzolv spray for spills and stains. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A pet owner's best friend
I have had my Dyson for six months now and am still as pleased with it as the day I got it.My husband and I have two indoor cats with beautiful, fine fluffy coats that are wonderful to pet and murder on our house. We are always joking about the "tumbleweeds" of cat hair that gather in the corners and under furniture.

A friend and fellow cat owner recommended the Dyson to me, and like other reviewers I was put off by the price at first. However, I finally decided to chance it - and have been raving about the Dyson ever since.

We have a black area rug in our home office - very foolish when both cats have white fur.I decided that rug would be the test of my new Dyson.Withmy old vaccuum, I had to practically scrub the carpet and even then much hair would remain ground into the nap. After one pass with the Dyson, the carpet looked as clean as it was when it was brand new - I had resigned myself to never getting it that clean again!

I was amazed at how much hair the Dyson picked up, and continues to pick up consistently after 6 months.I vaccuum my entire house probably twice weekly and the Dyson works great on my wood and tile floors. However the carpets are the real test, and mine have never looked better.Even my older carpet in my high-traffic living room looks brighter and newer after one pass of the Dyson. My sister, who has terrible allergies, tells me she notices a difference in the air quality in my house since I got this vaccuum. And I love the versatility of all the tools, because any pet owner will tell you that pet hair gets stuck in the darndest places.I have used the upholstery attachment on my delicate fabric lampshades, toss pillows, my bedspread ...The turbo tool works great on my upholstered furniture and also on the upholstery in my car.

The only drawbacks to this Dyson model have been mentioned by other reviewers - the tools all attach to the body of the vaccuum and can make it unweildy.I just store all of them in a box in the closet where I keep the vaccuum. Also the extension wand can be a little awkward to use, but it's well worth the results. And I do have to empty the collection bin more frequently than I did with other bagless vaccuums I have owned, but seeing how much hair and dirt the Dyson picks up I am just grateful that's not all still on my floor! It is so easy to empty the bin and there is almost no mess.

I rarely get so excited about any one product, but the Dyson delivers everything it claims and more.I am so happy I bought the Dyson and now recommend it compulsively to everyone who will listen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought this vacuum after reading other customers rave reviews. I have one very fluffy cat and thought this vacuuum was the answer.Wrong! I still have to hand remove cat hair that the vacuum won't pick up; Even some little threads and other things don't get picked up. I am disappointed that I wasted so much money on this vacuum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
This "machine" is quite simply the best. It performs so incredibly beyond any vacuum that I've ever seen that I have to refer to it as a machine rather than simply as a vacuum.

After 1 pass on the carpet with this Animal so much dog hair is removed that my 7 mos old son can now play on the carpet for hours with only 1 or 2 hairs popping up on his clothes. Before I would vacuum daily with my 10 yr old Eureka upright & after 1 minute of play on the floor my son would be covered in dog hair - dozens & dozens of strands. I no longer need to put a blanket down, keep the dog off the blanket (good luck), contain my baby to the blanket (harder still) and then toss the blanket in the wash each every night. With vacuuming every day or two I can just place my son & dog on the floor and only the dog is covered in fur.

Compared to my 10 yr old Eureka upright, this beast of an Animal:
    - is far lighter & very easy to tote upstairs
    - is far quieter
    - propels itself across the carpet effortlessly

I love this machine & highly recommend it.

And as for assembly - I don't get those comments that it's difficult. It took me less than 2 minutes to assemble.LOVE IT! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Never bin a big fan of gloves, but
These glove have changed my mind.Very good dexterity.I am no longer a full time tradesman, and I can't afford to have my hands in the shape they were in when I was in the field.I do more sales then work in the field, and I have developed "office hands".These gloves have saved me more than once when I have to go back in the field.I recently re-shingled my house and wore the gloves from start to finish. No calluses, no tar under the nails, and best of all I had skin on my finger tips at the end of the job.The gloves did take a beating, and I don't think they would make it thru another 15 square, but they fared much better than a pair of brown jerseys would have.A litte tattered and a blown seam or two, but the finger tips stayed on and no holes. They are a little pricey and if they were priced at around $12 to $14, I'd feel that they would be more in line with what I like to spend, but my hands are glad I made the investment.Somebody who uses them everyday will be going thru too many pairs in a year and at the price they are now you would be spend a good bit of your hard earned cash. But price them at $12 bucks and suppliers would not be able to keep'em in stock.

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: January 2003. The first high-speed wireless networking router to use the 802.11g standard, which is four times faster than the current standard (802.11b) and backwards compatible.

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, andmultiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

    access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

    • 802.11b
    • 802.11a
    • 802.11g

2-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't
It sounds like some customers have had really good Linksys router experiences.I haven't.So I have come to conclude that sometimes these routers work great, sometimes they completely fail.I've spent hours dealing with Linksys' customer support and my ISP trying to get my router to work.My iBook AirPort and Windows 2000 /USB wireless adapter both found the router easily. But the router was not able to hook up with my ISP.Both computers get a good wired static IP connection to the internet.I tried using Linkksys' customer support by phone, email, web and chat and kept getting advice that did not work and www.linksys.com pages that didn't work.A software engineer, I'm reasonably tech-savvy so I usually have success with half-decent tech support. They never once suggested that their router might be malfunctioning. One of my ISP's support representatives said that he's had a run of some 40 calls from Linksys customers with this kind of problem.Apparently I got one of these duds.

I'd say Linksys has big problems with quality control and customer support. With many good alternatives out there I don't think it's worth rolling the dice with Linksys.I gave it two stars, rather than one, because it sounds like the good ones work really great and I imagine the duds a in the minority. For what it's worth, the guy from my ISP said he's had good experiences with NetGear routers.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY easy to install, VERY easy to use!!!
Hi, I'm very happy with this Linksys Router. It took me only 10 seconds to surf in the web. Believe it or not!!!. I just plug in the Ethernet cable from my DSL Modem into the Router conection. I turn on my Gateway Laptop and....surprise!!! I was already conected to the web!!!.
No configuration needed, no CD running, no nothing!!!
Great product, great Plug and Play from Windows XP.

4-0 out of 5 stars quite good, for a small home network
I've had this router for about a year now, and it does everything I need for a home network of < 5 computers. The only thing the out-of-box firmware doesn't have that I wanted is DHCP reservations. However, I got a better firmware from:
    http://wifi-box.sf.net
which does this and adds a few other features. ... Read more

Le Creuset 9-1/2-Inch Nonstick Omelet Pan, Red

    Editorial Review

This Le Creuset omelet pan goes from the stovetop or oven to the dining room table. Although not designed for the slight-of-hand, this pan is otherwise thoughtfully constructed. Porcelain enameled cast iron absorbs, retains, and redistributes heat quickly, especially at low settings. The nonreactive, nonstick cooking surface does not absorb flavors and allows for low-fat cooking. And, in keeping with French tradition, the pan is stylish and is available in a variety of colors. To prolong the life of this pan, avoid using metal implements on its nonstick surface, heat it up gradually, use low-to-medium heat when cooking, and cool it down before washing. This omelet pan is hand cast in a one-of-a-kind sand mold and hand finished at the Le Creuset factory in France. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just pretty, but it works!
I just had to say, after being disappointed with my Sitram Cybernox pan, I went out and bought this pan.I paid less, yet totally got my money's worth. It really works great.I made a perfect Spanish omelet, Korean pancakes, cooked my flour tortillas and I plan to make Japanese Okonomiyaki.Next, I will buy the whole set.If you love to cook and love quality, le creuset is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Le Creuset work of art
I love this little pan. It's beautiful to look at &, like all my huge collection of Le Creuset, it's joy to use. It's the absolute perfect pan for cooking eggs. I've been using this omelet pan regularly for 3 years & it still looks & performs like new. I feel it was one of my best cookware purchases ever.

Keep in mind, you must use proper care with Le Creuset & with nonstick surfaces. Low to moderate heat only & no abrasive cleansers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very unweildy pan
I was disappointed with this product when it arrived after reading all the glowing reviews about it. Its color seemed excessively bright. Here were other problems I had with the pan:
First it was very heavy. The burners groaned under its weight. Do not attempt to flip anything or your wrist could break. Because it is so heavy, it took longer to warm up and cool down.
Second the insulation on the handle is not very good. Unlike wood, or synthetic handles, this one looks like it has just a coat of insulating paint on the iron. So the handle became hot.
I found the 10 dollar pans one can get at any Target or Walmart as being better for omlettes. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury--a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch smellers (who root out spell makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes. Jump to the Elizabethan era and Atkinson picks up the saga as Lord Edmund, who is perpetually courting favor from mad Queen Bess (Miranda Richardson) and is always walking a tightrope from which he can either gain the world or lose his head. Subjected to bizarre services for her majesty (at one point, Edmund is asked to do for potatoes what Sir Walter Raleigh did for tobacco), Edmund--as with his ancestor--can never quite fulfill his larger ambitions. The next incarnation we encounter is in late-18th-century Regency England. This time, Blackadder is a mere butler to the idiotic Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie in a brilliantly buffoonish performance) and is caught in various misadventures with Samuel Johnson, Shakespearean actors, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and William Pitt the younger. With a brief stop in Victorian London for a Christmas special, the series concludes with several episodes set during the Great War. The new Edmund is a career Army officer, but a scoundrel all the same. Shirking his duties whenever possible and taking advantage of any opportunity for undeserved reward, this final, deeply sour, and very funny Blackadder negotiates survival among a cadre of fools and dimwits. No small mention can be made of Atkinson's supporting cast, easily among the finest comic performers of their generation: besides Laurie and Richardson, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, and Tim McInnerny. --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Second only to Monty Python
People who have only seen Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean may be surprised to learn he can talk as well as act. This series is even better than Mr. Bean, discussed as follows:
The first series is the best of the bunch; afterwards the characters were overhauled and the series redefined. Not to say it wasn't still brilliant, just in a different way. This first incarnation of Edmund as the Duke of Edinburgh is hilarious; Atkinson portrays him as a scheming, thoroughly unlikeable toad of a man, feared by none and hated by all.His squeeking, grating voice perfectly complements his pencil-like body and strange gesticulations.Baldrick is his right-hand man, always on hand with a plan (and much better at carrying them out than in later series); Lord Percy is his sort-of friend, and Edmund takes pleasure in insulting both at every opportunity but nevertheless relies on them for support in his schemes. The middle episodes (when Edmund is made Archbishop of Canterbury, and when he is committed by his father to a political marriage to the ugliest princess in Europe) are the best of the six.
There must be a "worst-best" series, so to speak, and in my opinion it is the second one. Here, Edmund is far more refined, living a comfortable, aristocratic existence in Elizabethan England.Percy is less of a presence in this series, but Baldrick is still around; trouble is, he has not retained his ancestor's quick wit and intelligence, and has inexplicably been reduced to a room-temperature IQ and the butt of most of Edmund's biting comments. This is the Baldrick that would continue throughout the show's run, unfortunately (I rather liked the Baldrick of 1486).Baldrick's transformation is my chief complaint with the latter three series.
Series 3 loses Percy (although the actor has a one-episode cameo as the Scarlet Pimpernel), but features some of Edmund's best scheming, this time as butler to the Prince Regent, George IV.This series centers on Edmund's exasperation at being stuck as a subservient to such an idiot, while at the same time remaining loyal and protecting his master from outside enemies (read: everyone in England). As usual, his schemes to better himself end in failure most of the time, but at least he survives this series (and even becomes heir to the throne of England!).I must make mention of Baldrick, as he remains my favorite character; he has lost some more IQ points but is still an able partner to Edmund.
One of the most amusing shows, of course, is the Blackadder Christmas Carol, where Blackadder undergoes a reverse-Dickensian transformation, from the nicest bloke in London, charitible to a fault and good friends with his assistant Baldrick (whom he addresses as "Mr."!), to a Scrooge like his ancestors after a well-meaning Christmas ghost shows him that being bad can bring some nice material benefits, while being good offers only untenable "spiritual" rewards.Come Christmas morning, then, in five minutes he has put Baldrick in his place, told off and stolen from the townsfolk who only the day before he had generously given his entire Christmas fortune, and insulted Queen Victoria before settling down to an enormous turkey, his first acquisition through ill deeds. In some ways it is sad to see his metamorphosis, as he is very likeable on Christmas Eve, but it's good to see the old Blackadder back in form.
I regard Series 4 as the second best of the bunch, as it keeps the laughs rolling while at the same time having loads of fun at the expense of the military. Here we see the show's greatest social commentary and rather vicious satire, all still remaining true to its roots.Edmund is now a captain in the English army, fighting (or rather languishing) in the trenches of World War I.In the six episodes, he ridicules his superiors and schemes to get away from the trenches (not because it is dangerous, which it is, but because it is so bloody boring), all of which start off well but inevitably end in failure and sometimes near death. There is no Percy, but he is replaced (by the same actor) as Captain Darling, one of the more inspired supporting characters to grace the Black Adder series. It also contains many references back to the previous Blackadder years, a nice touch for the final series. The end to this sextet of episodes is hardly ambiguous but is very emotional, easily the best climax of all the series.
The reunion show could have been better, but it is fun to see Edmund and Baldrick traipse about the space-time continuum and wreck havoc on history for the sake of winning a bet.

All told, brilliant show.Obviously I hold it in high regard and think all should own it and cherish it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Way over-hyped - not very funny
I really loved Rowan as Mr. Bean, and was excited to hear the great reviews about Black Adder.I found this entire series very unfunny however.Rowan is actually funny as Mr. Bean; as the Black Adder, he's just a smug, disinterested jerk who points out how stupid his companions are.All the jokes seemed exactly the same - someone makes some idiotic, stupid remark, and Black Adder rolls his eyes and says how stupid the person is.I just don't find that funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best humor to sail the Atlantic via Curtis & Elton..
comes from Mr. Bean, himself. While my nine-year-old daughter is enjoying Bean, I prefer Black Adder's second season. Buy this package instead of doling out over $100 purchasing all of the discs under seperate cover.
Blackadder's Christmas Carol is especially humorous, with Adder exhibiting a polar opposite of his usual sarcastic character until the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present & Future pays him a visit. He learns being bad can be so good.
It's a shame here in the states, Atkinson is better known for his Bean character rather than his work on these releases.
For you Young Ones fans, there are quite a few appearances by Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer & Adrian Edmondson.
    Nice package! ... Read more

    Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0
    by Adobe

    CD-ROM (02 August, 2002)
    list price: $99.00

    Editorial Review

For intermediate digital image enthusiasts who don't need Adobe Photoshop, Adobe's barer-bones Photoshop Elements 2.0 works atop the same engine and provides many of the same tools for a fraction of the price.

Elements' interface is less complex then Photoshop, packaging oft-used quick correction tools in easy-to-access locations. The program gears itself toward the novice user looking to learn more about digital image modification and enhancement. You can also enter keywords into a search field and Elements will offer up related walkthroughs and instructions.

Elements can input images from a variety of sources, including scanners and digital cameras. It's more powerful than the average program bundled with any of these devices, so you can make it your default image editor for either or both. Stills can also be snagged from a variety of video formats, including QuickTime, MPEG, AVI, and Windows Media. Before opening images, you can browse through their thumbnails, which include a preview of the image as well as its size and type.

Inputted images can be enhanced, distorted, corrected, or combined into panoramas through the PhotoMerge stitching tool. The new Selection Brush lets users simply paint over an item they would like to cut or copy. While it still takes a steady hand to select non-straight edges, it's easier than using the standard selection tools such as the rectangular marquee or the lasso. Elements works well as a file manager as well, its new batch processing feature allowing users to make changes to several images at once.

Output options are also expansive, including attaching photos to e-mail messages, printing images, or saving them in a smaller Web format and then uploading them to the Internet. Beyond these typical tools, Elements users can create image slideshows in PDF format that can be viewed on PDAs as well as other PCs.

While there are other image editing programs that sell for the same price, Photoshop Elements brings to the table much of the power of its bigger sibling while making it accessible for the average user. --J. Curtis ... Read more

Elements is a program that is packed with many of the same features as the more expensive full version Adobe Photoshop. The features that it doesn't have, like duotones, channel palette and Quickmask, can be worked around with an extra step or two. It is a terrific value.
That said, the learning curve for those new to the world of Adobe, can be pretty steep. I should know - I use it to teach a digital scrapbooking class at an Educational Center in California (yes - a FREE course). For those of you who have not used Adobe Products before, there is 3 to 5 ways to do just about everything - this can be confusing for beginners. Besides a menu bar with drop down windows, there is a toolbar, a tool editor, as well as palettes that dock and separate from the main menu bar. The Layer Palette (A wonderful and useful thing) seems to be particulary hard for beginners to understand.
My suggestion is, if you are just starting to use Adobe product, find a school and take a course BEFORE your purchase. Most of my student do end up buying the software, or a scanner that includes it, by the end of the semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
I have worked with Photoshop for years now but I have never came accross anything as easy to use as Photoshop Elements. I can't think of anything better and more easier to use for created professional results. Really very good product!

1-0 out of 5 stars Expensive to use. Misleading marketing
The i950 worked well for a little while when all of a sudden the machines stops functioning. It turns out that the Printhead must be replaced periodically and that Canon considers the Printhead to be a 'consumable'. I went back and checked the documentation carefully and there was absolutely no word of a printhead needing any sort of replacement. Well, what do you know??? A replacement printhead runs you over $100!!!!

This is a case of deceptive marketing and questionable engineering. But then again, if they were truthful about their printers, who would by them? I'm done with Canon.

I really like the print quality of this printer, its just
