Editorial Review

With Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Windows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.

The Security Center lets you check the status of your essential security settings.

XP certainly looks different, with rounded window corners, larger and more detailed icons, and a clean-look desktop that on first installation shows only the taskbar and Recycle Bin. XP is also more customizable than earlier versions of Windows, and includes visual themes that let you change the whole appearance of Windows in an instant. That is the window-dressing, but underneath are some significant improvements. One of the most interesting is Remote Desktop. A standard XP feature, this uses technology from Microsoft Terminal Server to enable users to access their computer over any connection; for example, by dialing into the office from home.

This is not just file access--this technology lets you run applications remotely as if you were sitting at your desk at work. This is mature technology, stable and carefully thought out. So, for example, you can print from a remote word processor to a local printer. A variation on the theme is Remote Assistance, where the user can allow a remote helper to view their desktop, or optionally gain control of the keyboard and mouse, in order to troubleshoot a problem. The feature can also be disabled to ease security concerns.

Laptop users benefit from enhanced power management, with options to extend battery life by reducing CPU speed and display brightness. IrDA support has been fixed so that, unlike Windows 2000, Windows XP can easily use modems in mobile telephones via infrared. A new screen font, ClearType, improves legibility for laptop or other flat screens, and there is built-in support for wireless networking using the popular 802.11 standard. A great feature of XP, also found in Windows 2000, is the ability to synchronize network files with offline copies. Previously, these files could not be stored securely, but now they can be encrypted.

The Information Bar in Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 notifies you when it blocks ActiveX control or active content and then lets you decide what to do.

For Web browsing, XP comes with Internet Explorer 6.0. The enhancements in IE 6.0 are mainly of interest to Web developers, and in any case Microsoft makes IE freely available to all Windows users. Although Java is not installed by default, it is not difficult to download a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Windows Messenger, originally a chat client, has evolved into a collaboration tool that allows for video conferencing and application sharing.

Service Pack 2 allows users to instruct Internet Explorer how to handle downloads from a specific publisher

The most significant new feature for Internet users is the built-in firewall. A firewall protects against one of the most disturbing security risks, in which other users unknown to you might connect to your computer while it is online, reading private files or causing other damage. XP's built-in firewall is a simple affair, but it does prevent most types of unauthorized connection.

Windows XP has strong multimedia features. The new Media Player lets you copy music from CD to hard disk, create your own playlist, and write your own music CDs if you have a CD writer. Although there is loss of quality as a result of compression, the process is easy and convenient. Media Player 8.0 can play back DVD video, but only if a hardware or software DVD decoder is already installed. You can also play MP3 audio files and MPEG videos, but sadly, not the popular RealMedia formats. In the end, Media Player does nothing that you cannot also do with free alternatives, but it is slick and nicely integrated.

The XP user interface is not a radical departure from earlier versions of Windows, but there are a number of small changes that together add up to a significant improvement. The Start menu now automatically features the most frequently used programs at the top of the list, and you can add and remove shortcuts by right-clicking the icon and selecting Pin or Unpin from the pop-up menu. Windows online help is integrated into a Help and Support Center that works like an internal Web site, with searchable help, tutorials, and walk-throughs.

Windows XP Professional includes all the features of Windows XP Home, and adds support for dual processors, encryptable file systems, offline folders, the Remote Desktop as described above, and extra administration features that come into play when connected to a Windows server domain. XP is demanding on hardware, and it would be a mistake to install it on less than Microsoft's recommended minimum requirements. There is also activation to consider, a mildly annoying anti-piracy measure that requires you to obtain a code from Microsoft for full installation, and in the future if you reinstall or make major system changes.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Features

Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker Makes browsing the Internet more enjoyable by enabling you to reduce unwanted ads and content.
Internet Explorer download monitoring Warns you about potentially harmful downloads and gives you the option to block files that could be malicious.
Internet Explorer Information Bar Provides better information about events that are happening as you browse the Web, so it’s easier to know what’s going on and address potential security issues.
Windows Security Center Allows you to easily view your security status and manage key security settings in one convenient place.

Improved wireless support Dramatically improves and simplifies the process of discovering and connecting to wireless networks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running flawlessly since installation
I put XP and SP2 on my Dell dual-processor workstation as soon as the OS an the service packs came out.The system has literally never crashed.

XP is the more advanced Windows NT operating system with applications compatability modifications to run all the crazy stuff that Windows 98/ME would run.The difficulty of implementing that is often underestimated by journalists and pundits.

There's a lot of Microsoft bashing out there, which unfortunately means that any product from them will have two or three stars.Take those rants with a grain of salt.

For olders slower computers, XP might be too much.I recommend Windows 98 2nd Edition over Windows ME if you have to run an older system.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disaster
I really hate this product because they way it is advertised is misleading. If you read Microsoft reviews of this product, you would think that this product is the best option out there. Heck, you might even come to believe that 100+ $ for this is product is actually a pretty good deal. Tell you what? They should pay each and every one of us 100 buck for using this unsecure and full of glitches software or O/S as they like to call it. Windows Security has become a major issue for consumers, and Sp2 does little to ease our security worries. For example, there is a adware called cnml.exe that is absolutely undeletable. This shows the flaws of windows registry and its task manager. You go and delete all the related keys such as Winnet.exe from registry, but somehow this program still gets to load itself into memory and send you ads. Now, you even unload it using Microsoft task manager, but that doesn't help you either. So the last chance would be logging in to a linux live cd and deleting all the files such as cnml.dll and so on. So Security issues are still there. The search also sucks. This version of Windows is even more memory demanding which is really unacceptable. Why would windows need all this memory. 512 Mg is not enough anymore and Microsoft personally recommand 768 Mb of ram. The only reason that I am still using this product is the need to develop .net applications using Visual studio.net. So, besides that linux is better in every possible way. You don't like linux? Buy a Mini Mac and go with macintosh. You don't like Macintosh, then go with solaris, but whatever you do, please save your time and skip this product or you'll have security issues like every other user. 3 stars for IIS and .Net platform. 0 for security. 0 for performance. Avge = 6/4 or2 & 1/2*

1-0 out of 5 stars i386 files corrupted
Returned software twice. Laptop unable to read either disks due to corrupted files in the 1386 directory. Microsoft, are you idiots reading this? Then get a friggin clue. Why do you think you are loosing market share to the Linix/Java and Mac world? I have been a Microsoft developer for twenty years, and I'm ready to jump ship. This is what happens when you let a bunch of tools from Bangalore take over project development because you're impressed with their fake degrees. (Did you idiots know that some of their masters programs take about here months to complete?) You get what you pay for, and I'm getting sick of paying for your incompetence. This doesn't cost me only the price of the software, it also costs me my time which I value if you don't. Get it freaking right darn it!!! Windows XP software upgrade has been problematic since you first introduced it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade
This has improved greatly since 2000, and includes training on Microsoft.com.I have enjoyed learning more about each product in the office package.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2003 Office upgrade
If you are primarily a Word and Excel user, this upgrade is just not worth it.In fact, I find the typical autocorrect-type (assumes the programmer knows better than you how you want to format your document) additions more annoying than improvements to the program. This is overall a very good package, but I just wish Microsoft would leave it alone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unable to get past the "Convert" Process
In mid-August I purchased a new 3-Gig P4 mid-range Compaq laptop with Windows XP Pro, a trial version of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works pre-installed.Using the documentation provided on Amazon.com I purchased the upgrade version of Microsoft Office 2003 Pro on amazon.com.Here it is the mid-November and I'm still trying to get the trial version to "covert" to the upgrade version I purchased. No documentation seems to exist, online or otherwise, and I dread the possibility of spending hours on hold to Microsoft. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good bargain for a geek
It works great for me. I am an IT person so it's not really hard for me to figure it out. But my feeling it's really a challenge to average consumer. That's maybe why such a good deal is not popular in retail stores. To make it work without too much hassle, just put it into the DMZ zone of your router. One suggestion: use it with a cordless phone will really improve the call experience.
Things I don't like (D-Link guys can improve if they want to): the default lens, which has a narrow field of view, is not good for viewing kids, they run around the house. I ended up buying another wide-angle lens for $40. If a video-in jack can be added to connect external video source, such as a camcorder, that will be even better. The voice is not prioritized over video. So voice degrades as much as video when doing cross-Pacific netmeeting. That hurts. But what can you complaint about, a picture is worth a thousand words, let alone a video.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Unhappy
My daughter bought this for me so I could see my grand children who live in other states.I have spent 6 days and almost $450 trying to get it to work. I even hired a computer repairman who charged me $184 and could not get it working. If it was not a gift I would send it back to get my money back.I called the help line, lots of times and usually got someone who didn't speak English very well. They would end up telling me it was a problem with the router. Then I would call the router and they would tell me it is a problem with the D-Link.No one wants to take responsibility for getting it working.I even went on the support page on the internet and read pages of things that could be wrong.Tried them all in six days and I still don't have it working and has cost me alot of time and "money".Good Luck if you buy it you will need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy The DVC-1100!
I have to admit, the main reason I purchased (2) of these DVC-1100's was because of the stellar reviews posted here on Amazon.I bought one for my in-laws and on for my wife and I so that they could watch our children grow up over long distance.Great idea, bad solution. The main problem I had was that the camera lens is fixed, and does NOT focus.I waited 1 hour on the line with D-LINK tech support only to learn that the lenses on these cameras are designed to be fixed and only focus when you are approximately 6 - 8 feet away from the camera.Unfortunately, the ones I got did not focus at all, and the video quality was absolutely terrible (washed out color and bad contrast). Please listen to me, save your money and do not buy the DVC-1100.This device is cheaply made, and just not there yet... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent PDA
I don't know why this pda has such a bad review, I recently purchased one and its been great! I haven't had one problem with it. And for the people that are complaining about the record button, it can be disabled!

3-0 out of 5 stars E 740 problems
This is a a great PDA execpt for one thing. It is has NO built-in memory to save stored data. The E 750 took care of this problem and Toshiba essentially stifed the owner of the orignal -including my letter to them which was written before one year warrantee. They never even answered my letter.

Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations -Toshiba

1-0 out of 5 stars No Upgrade
I was pleased with its performance until I realized that Toshiba doesn't offer the upgrade to Pocket PC 2003.Seems like just a ploy for me to sell it and buy the 755, which is the same machine.Needless to say I'm not happy with Toshiba's support of this product. ... Read more

Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition
by Microsoft
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars
CD-ROM (11 February, 2003)
list price: $9.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Microsoft typically supplements its operating systems with a retail grab bag of utilities and entertainment-oriented applications called Microsoft Plus. For Windows XP, it has released not one but two such packages. The latest, Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition, sports nearly a dozen perks, toys and tools for those who use their PC as a multimedia companion. Though some will find the program packs its fair share of incidental "fluff", anyone into photos, video or music will undoubtedly find several components both useful and enjoyable.

Digital camera buffs will quickly take to Photo Story, wherein they can organize their favorite pictures in slideshow format, add narration, and create a dynamic sense of motion by manually or automatically zooming or panning across each shot. The end result is flowing and compelling and far less stagnant than a standard still presentation.

The program also has plenty of goodies for music fans, including Analog Recorder, a clever utility that transcribes audio in real time from traditional sources such as cassettes and 8-tracks (cables not included), organizes them into playlists, and efficiently removes pops and hiss via technology licensed from respected pro audio veteran Syntrillium Corp. Slightly less impressive is CD Label Maker, which offers a standard selection of CD labels and templates but unfortunately emblazons a Microsoft Plus logo onto each one. Party Mode stretches your Windows Media Player to fill the entire screen and displays customizable marquee announcements and animations, and the aptly named Audio Converter converts MP3 and WAV files to space-efficient WMA files.

Arguably Digital Media Edition’s most disposable feature is Plus Dancer, a selection of minuscule live action pop-up dancers who cavort on command across the desktop. Conversely, the practical Sync & Go allows users of pocket PCs to enjoy their favorite PC content on their portable. Microsoft rounds out this eclectic package with several tidbits and novelties, including a variable interval alarm clock, eight mediocre Windows Media Player skins, and fifty additional transitions and visual effects for Microsoft’s free downloadable video editor, Windows Movie Maker. --Gord Goble ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun at a great value
Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition is not something necessary for the enjoyment of life, but, then, neither is a computer, a cell phone, or a TV, unless you are a diehard couch potato. What this collection of utilities does is add some fun to Windows XP, and it's stuff no other operating system enjoys.I personally use Photo Story and Analog Recorder often, because they are both easy to use and a blast to use, too.The games collection could have been better, but, hey, for a little over ten bucks, why complain?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Buying!
While the idea behind this product is great, it just doesn't come out that way in the end.I recently upgraded my video card to GeForce 4 MX 5200, and now the Plus! screensavers (i.e. the aquarium and others) do not display correctly.

The games are okay, but only the Labyrinth is worth playing. There is a link on Microsoft's website to download for free more bonus levels for Labyrinth, but everytime I download the free upgrade, the levels never get installed into the game. The download .exe file is a self-extractor, so there's no way to control it.I have tried to get the extra free levels three times now, and it NEVER works!

If you want the aquarium screen saver, buy the boxed version from SereneScreen! It is EXACTLY like the one in Plus! and only costs $19.oo!This is what I did last week, and the SereneScreen aquarium screensaver works fine on my computer with the new graphics card!

Someone in another review said that Microsoft Plus! was a good example of "bloat-ware".I agree 100% -- lots of pretty packaging, lots of hype, lots of teaser write-ups on the box, but in the end there just isn't much to the package.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
Don't get me wrong--this isn't a BAD product, but it really isn't very useful, either. I find the dancers are fairly amusing for a while and the analog recorder makes a really easy way to record old tapes, but that's about it. Also, the recorder ONLY records in proprietary Micro$oft .wma format instead of offering a useful-for-editing format like .wav. Because of this, the only time I ever use it is when I am feeling lazy and I have it set my recording level for me.

I would only recommend this product if:
1. Like me, you can get it "Free after rebates" (don't forget about taxes and shipping). Don't even think about paying more than $5 (after taxes, etc) for it.
2. You already know you like a certain feature (like the dancers)--don't get this hoping for something great because you will probably be disappointed
3. You have a lot of extra space on your hard drive and
4. You have a fast internet connection (Downloading dancers requires up to 20MB or more PER DANCER!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Feeling, Great Range, Great Looks!
Pros
- Looks great!Blue see-through keyboard and the bluetooth receiver glowing blue makes my workstation look futuristic.
- Feels Great!I've been through many Logitech/Microsoft mouses, this mouse feels great in my hands.
- Quiet Keys! The keys are very quiet as I type. Can type away even with someone in the room sleeping.

Cons
- Doesn't work outside of Windows! My PC's Bluetooth Keyboard does not work until I get into Windows.Meaning, any setup I want to do right when the PC starts, I cannot do it with the Bluetooth keyboard. It may just be my computer
- Batteries - Requires 2 AA each for the keyboard and mouse.I thought by now, all mouse/keyboards had a charger+rechargable batteries. At least there is a battery life indicator in Windows.
- Delay - There is always a delay (about a good 5 seconds) when I start using it after not using it for about 20 minutes.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.Works great.

1-0 out of 5 stars great idea, terrible execution
Not worth the time, effort or expense. Would have been worth it if it worked half of the time. When the battery goes...apparently so does the memory of the system that you've installed this keyboard/mouse. Very frustrating. Currently used as a paperweight and reminder to check here before making a purchase such as this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Keyboard and mouse combo ive owned

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awful
Office 2003 is quite simply the worst pile of bloated crapware I have ever had the misfortune of installing on my computer. Its slow, costs too much, eats up way too much precious hard drive space, and is difficult and unintuitive to use.Absolutely the worst experience I personally have ever had with "productivity" software.Do yourself a favor, go to openoffice.org, download their suite and use it.You won't be disappointed.Sometimes, I truly wish there were a "zero star" option from Amazon in rating a product. If anything deserves it, this garbage does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dear XMLers...
I am primarily an Excel user; this review is intended for those who primarily use Excel...

If you work with a development team that has the ability to produce XML files, and you want to get away from using gigantic flat databases for references, Office 2003 is your solution.Copying and pasting will be no longer necessary; just query a URL.It's proven to be an indispensible tool for us.

So, if you're in the serious business of producing reports, and you have a development staff that can produce dynamic XML pages, this is the product for you. With the previous version, you could Web Query; XML provides so many more possibilities --especially if you're coding. The code is much simpler.

Other than that, the program is not much different from 2002.Many other features that people want were still not implemented, such as extending the columns beyond 256 and the rows beyond 65K+.Word still has the same ole quirks (you know what they are if work with it often), and Access is just about the same. For the latter two programs, the only noticeable difference is the 'feel,' or the look of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars The latest version
Perhaps I am jaded but again it seems that Microsoft has cranked out another product that looks and acts so much like its predecessor that you wonder at first if you loaded it onto your computer properly.

Office 2003 gives you what you already have in Office XP (and a few earlier versions) so learning how to use it is never going to be a problem. In virtually every way the program looks and feels like the previous Office versions.

There are improvements although I am not sure how much a home user will need the XML functionality. It may be a god-send one day but today it is still not a major factor and certainly does not demand a major update. The RESEARCH option is something to contend with and could be quite useful - it is almost like having Encarta loaded on your machine as well.I found it a bit limiting though; it is good as a thesaurus but there is no world atlas, quotation source, etc. Many people have applauded the new look and feel of Outlook.Again, it behaves just the same as previous versions of Outlook did.

Microsoft chose to retire the Office bar and that is a big mistake. They are trying to push the Quick Launch bar but most businesses and almost all Office users preferred the Office bar.

Don't get me wrong:Office 2003 works very well and with Word, Outlook, Excel, Access and Publisher you can literally do anything! It also preforms very well. But, again, unless Microsoft starts making major changes, these releases should not be heralded as new.If anything, they should be upgrades that former users should be able to download if they registered the original product - the cost is too prohibitive to justify upgrading. And, as your Office 97 or XP works just as well, you should think seriously before spending the money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gadget (not for geeks)
I think that this is a great foundation for up and coming video playback machines. I currently own one and have had it since christmas day. I love it. It is soo easy to use. Even my little 7 year old brother uses it with ease. All the options on the machine make it impossible to get lost, and if you do, there is a back button. I tested out all the video players out during christmas time and found this one the best. I have had 3 iRiver Mp3 players and was anxious to get there video player. After trying to use it i often found myself lost and confused on the machine, so i kept having to power back on and off. I also tried the archos, which was even more confusing. Overall this is a great hassle free machine here are some pros and cons. If your wondering why I didn't rate it a 5 because no machine is perfect.

Cons
-Big and bulky (Who cares it just means it has a big screen)
-Can't record to device directly from TV
-Scratches easily (I recommend using the case at all times)
-Can't tinker with audio (Can't adjust bass, treble, balance, etc.)
-Takes awhile to put video files on device

Pros
-Unbeilavbly easy to use
-Awesome video playback
-Sound is great (even has own speaker)
-Ultra fast putting music files on device
-Easy to watch during day or night
-Nice size memory for plenty of songs or video or pictures
-Incredible battery life 1 day of music or half a day of video

If you want all the little geeky features this is not the machine for you. If you want a easy to use audio-video player, this is the machine for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best So Far
I don't know what all these guys are smoking, but this thing is great. I am a gadget geek, but this is very easy for a pc user to use. All you need is media player 10 and an XP pro machine or MCE. Convertion does takes some time, but it converts the video to utilize space , and all video convertion takes time.
I have an ipod as well but this is with me at all times, with my TV shows with me on the road that i capture hi def...looks sweet.
Get this if you want a great multimedia portable with great battery life.

And common 425.00 is not alot for this device.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth getting yet
most pvp's aren't worth getting yet either. they don't have the best support and they are too exspensive. if you have a lot of money to waste get this. mp3 players are still cheaper and practical. if you want more than a mp3 player get the photo viewing iriver h10 If this was cheaper people would actually look at them. still a lot of peolpe don't have compatible pc's with them. if a few years passed pvp's would be worth getting by then they would be smaller and not heavey as bricks creative makes a great zen micro too. ... Editorial Review

Author Geoffrey Moore makes the case that high-tech products require marketing strategies that differ from those in other industries. His chasm theory describes how high-tech products initially sell well, mainly to a technically literate customer base, but then hit a lull as marketing professionals try to cross the chasm to mainstream buyers. This pattern, says Moore, is unique to the high-tech industry.

Moore suggests remedies for the problem that can help businesses meet their long-term goals. He coaches marketing professionals on how to move slowly through the gulf, teaching them to create profiles and target specific segments of the population rather than trying to plow right into the mainstream. He cites examples of successful chasm crossings by such companies as Apple, Tandem, Oracle, and Sun, showing what they all had in common and exposing the different weaknesses in their strategies. Moore also assigns responsibility for success to programmers and developers by suggesting they design a "whole product model." Here, because integration tasks are daunting to the mainstream market, all the components of a technological product must be in one package. Moore also describes strategies for competing with rival companies and assessing the best distribution channels for penetrating the target market.

Written not just for marketing specialists but for all employees whose futures ride on the success of a technical product, Crossing the Chasm delivers crucial information in an engaging, readable tone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crossing the chasm moves you into market leadership
The high tech market illusion markets new technology immediately too the mass marketed. Enthusiasts of the market illusion argue, "if Bill Gates can market windows to the masses, why can I market my technology to the mass market?"At the origin, all high tech markets have a gap between the mainstream-market, the chasm. The chasm problem can't be solved by voluntary assistance, all the resources required to cross the chasm must be requested. In a closed market, a central authority controls all standards and rules. This works fine for a closed market, however, the mass market is composed of numerous interest groups and each group is distinguished by its own psychology and demographics. This each each group will have its own market response. The key too crossing the Chasm means understanding each group niche and its relationship to its neighbor niches.Make a total commitment to a niche and don't take on more than one or two niches at a time.Reverse the trend in the niche decision from high risk and low data too high data and low risk. Focus resources to become dominate in the niche, big fish in small pond.Characterize the target: create something that feels like real people, record down your customer scenerios, store thumbnail information about each customer, and determine how the product will be brought to use by the customer.

Accepting this reality means building a whole application that solves a 100 percent of the business problems of the group, this becomes the high tech lore: 1. target the right customer 2. derive the compelling buying reason 3. build the whole product 4. form partners and allies 5. create a distribution channel 6. find the right pricing 7. distinquish from competition or create competition 8. position into the niche and work to create a mass market merge 9. determine the next target customer.

The high tech innovator must become enlighten. As you cross the chasm you will not be a market leader, but by the time you reach the other side, there will be a strong following. The high tech innovator must realize the markets do not unfold in a smooth continuous manner, there are perils in the chasm, and gain niche loyalty is the key to gain mass-market loyalty. The innovator must gain the trust of the pragmatist. The pragmatist is critical to gain customers because of his large support base.Once the pragmatist is won over, he remains very loyal to the application. It is impossible to win mass-market acceptance with gain the pragmatist loyalty.

Visionaries give high tech companies their first breaks. The winning strategy is for the entrepreneur to define product deliverables. The Visionaries can give the high tech company a burst of revenue and exceptional visibility and without the boost the high-tech products can't make it to market. The visionary is in a hurry to build the future and perceives limited windows of opportunity.Because the opportunity windows are small, large sums of money are generated to complete the project on time. The entrepreneur must create phases of the visionaries project. The high tech company must seed the entrepreneur community with their idea and product overview and hope that a visionary will share its vision. The process is a creative imaginative dream and high tech company is offering a credible way for visionary to realize their dream. The core of the dream is a business goal and it involves a quantum leap forward in the way business gets done and it also involves a high degree of recognition and reward. The dream is looking for a fundamental breakthrough.

The market is flush with enthusiasm and vision. The high tech company must attempt to distinguish themselves from their competitors and once the mainstream merges with the market niche, wealth and growth occur.

The early majority wants evolutionary and not revolutionary product features. The early majority is concerned about disrupting their organization. A very pragmatic attitude compels the early major to seek resource references reassuring them on the technology investment.

The early adopters hope to gain a jump on their competition, lower production costs, provide more complete customer service, and create a radical discontinuity between the old way of doing business and the new way.

It is tough to break into a new industry when selling to a pragmatist.Pragmatists deeply value the experience of their colleagues and funds are in the hands of prudent souls.Pragmatists seek a percentage improvement: incremental, measurable, and predictable and too them risk represents a chance to waste money. The natural prudence and budget restrictions keep them cautious.Pragmatist focus on standardization, increased sales, and lower costs and once won they are very loyal.

The customer can't reference each other when they are in different markets.Customer reference is a chain reaction affected usually by word of mouth. The market purpose must be to develop and shape something that is real and has a set of potential customers and a given set of products and services and allows the customers to reference each other when making buying decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars a high tech business classic
Let's face it -- 80% of business books are pure garbage.

This is one of the gems. One that should sit on your office bookshelf.

Moore came up with an interesting take on how high tech businesses must move from early adopters to the mainstream and the challenges involved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, even if you think you already understand
Long established as a classic, the drawing depicting the different classes of customers and their adoption rates are commonly used in the industry. I personally thought I already understood it, just from osmosis. However, reading the book taught me more about the characteristics of those customers, how you gain penetration into their markets, and most importantly how you manage a team and produce a product into those markets.

There are also lessons in there about establishing a beachhead and how to choose your target customer that dovetail nicely into some more modern work around persona identification in software development and the need to identify just one target persona for your application at a time. This is a great marketing book -- even if some of the specific company examples are somewhat dated -- whose concepts readily translate into not only management but directly into product development and vision. ... Editorial Review

The Casio Exilim EX-S3 digital camera packs a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor and a large 2.0-inch LCD screen into a body that's only a half-inch thick. Its high-speed startup minimizes the time until the camera is ready to shoot after being turned on and a 0.01 release time lag records the image virtually as soon as you press the shutter release button.

Optics and Resolution
The Exilim EX-S3's 3.2-megapixel CCD image sensor yields a maximum image size of 2048 x 1536 pixels, for print enlargements up to 11 x 14 inches. While the Exilim EX-S3 doesn't have an optical zoom feature, you can get closer to your subject with the 4x digital zoom.

Storage and Transfer
In addition to its 10 MB of built-in memory, the Exilim EX-S3 also supports use of thin, compact Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (not included). An easy operation copies images between a memory card and built-in memory. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
The Exilim EX-S3 captures 320 x 240 resolution video clips (with no sound) at 12 frames per second up to 30 seconds in length. The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

More Features
The Best Shot Mode provides optimum camera setups in an instant. Simply select the sample scene that is similar to the image you want to record, and the camera's exposure compensation, white balance, and other settings are configured accordingly.

With the included cradle, you can connect to your PC or Mac and transfer images easily via USB. The PhotoLoader software automatically transfers all JPEG and AVI files in image memory to the computer. You can also start a slideshow of images currently in the camera's memory.

Other features include:

  • Built-in flash with auto, on, off, and red-eye reduction modes.
  • Calendar screen provides visual diary of images to help you quickly search and locate the image you want.
  • Direct print ability to select Epson printers without the need of transferring images to PC.

Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.5 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches and weighs 2.5 ounces. This package includes the Exilim EX-S3 digital camera, battery, AC adapter, dock, USB cable, hand strap, and CD-ROM with imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent camera!
The Casio Exilim EX-S3 3MP Digital Camera is a masterpiece.
Consistently awesome photographs when set on the "fine" setting (no pixelated images).
Operating it is a no-brainer even though it has a lot of high-end user adjustable features. The "best shot" feature takes any quesswork out of the picture-taking process.

You will need an additional mmc card (256 Megs recommended).

This camera rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Tiny, Lightweight, Take-Everywhere Dig Cam...
My overall rating of this tiny digital camera has been positive so far. When buying a digital camera, I basically wanted to focus on shutter speed since my last digital camera, Kodak LS 443's shutter speed was so slow compared to Casio Exilim.I also wanted a lightweight digital camera.I also had a budget in which I didn't want to spend tons of money on a gadget in which will be replaced by a newer higher-tech gadget later on. And wanted a user-friendly digital camera in which I didn't need to carry their manual with me.Here were my reasons for buying this digital camera:

First of all, I bought this camera after my x-bf got his Exilim M2 which I fell in love and had to get my own Casio Exilim. It is such a small digital camera in which I take with me in purse and can snap a quick picture anywhere and anytime.

Second of all, it has a HUGE LCD display which makes it easier to see what your picture will look like when you are trying to center the picture.

Third of all, price of this digital camera was very reasonable compared to other high-end digital camera, like Sony.

Fourt of all, it is such an user-friendly digital camera that I didn't need to read the manual at all.

Lastly, I set my picture resolution to FINE in order to see the best picture quality and I love the fast shutter-speed.Keep up the great work @ Casio.I can't wait for S100 price to go down since that will be my next gadget purchase. It's too bad that Casio is not being sold in a lot of the bigger electronics store but more available online in which case, I bought it from Amazon.com site.I bought this camera last 5/2004 and it still takes excellent pictures.I take a lot of events pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great camera but not durable at all
Lovely camera, great photos while it lasts.Fits wonderfully in your pocket. But that's exactly the problem--the camera seems to be extremely heat or moisture sensitive.Though I was careful not to carry it with anything else that might scratch it, small "blooms" or spots gradually form on the LCD display and inside the lens, ruining both the viewfinder and the pictures.Perhaps this is the reason they have discontinued this model. ... Toshiba Qosmio E15-AV101 Notebook PC (1.70 GHz Pentium M (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Drive)

Editorial Review

The Basics
When is a notebook not just a notebook? When it's one of Toshiba's new Qosmio notebooks. Distinctive from other mobile computers by virtue of its strong multimedia attributes and easy adaptability to home entertainment setups, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is a superb portable package that impresses in virtually any environment. Powerful, exceedingly versatile, and packed with cutting-edge amenities, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is well-suited to discriminating individuals with a passion for multimedia.

The Qosmio E15-AV201 features a 15-inch diagonal wide-screen XGA LCD with TruBrite.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPUs on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, e-mail, and the like. The Qosmio E15-AV101 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor 735 running at 1.7 GHz. This is one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system, the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. This particular CPU is part of Intel's new, upgraded Pentium M lineup, featuring an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cache for extremely fast access to recently opened files and applications. Though its overall speed is not on par with that of a high-end Intel Pentium 4 processor, this CPU will easily handle all common tasks while at the same time improving battery life.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drives, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in random access memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking, and less strain on your hard drive. The Qosmio E15-AV101 incorporates 512 MB of fast PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM memory. Though ultrademanding users may want to expand this total to the unit's boggling maximum of 2,048 MB, the stock allotment of RAM is more than enough for the vast majority of situations.

Video
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with dedicated video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures. This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated DDR video memory. This is considered a strong notebook graphics chipset, delivering topnotch images and smooth frame rates to virtually any 2-D and most 3-D applications, including many of today's most popular 3-D games. Super-serious gamers may want to upgrade to an even more powerful 3-D card, though most users will be quite satisfied as is.

Display
You'll love the way your images look on the system's 15-inch XGA display. Featuring Toshiba's TruBrite technology for a better, brighter picture than with typical notebooks, a maximum resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels, and extra-wide viewing angles, this display is ready for any environment and source.

Hard Disk
The Qosmio E15-AV101 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This level of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and multimedia files.

The QosmioPlayer allows video and audio entertainment with the press of the button.

The SuperDrive reads and writes most popular DVD/CD formats (+/-RW and RAM).

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A CD-ROM drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A CD-RW drive adds CD burning, so you can also back up your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can write home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVDs, which boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs. Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today's most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound and two larger-than-average Harman-Kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound and two larger-than-average Harman-Kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Connectivity and Expansion
Whether you prefer wireless or corded connections, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is ready for anything the present or future may bring. The unit offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a standard dialup 56K data/fax modem for low-speed communication, an IntelPRO/100 VE network connection for high-speed wired networking and Internet, and integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) for cordless e-communication at home, at the office, or on the road via local public hotspots. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug-and-play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, Bluetooth 1.1 technology for interaction with wireless peripherals, an i.LINK 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), futuristic S-video and component TV-out ports, and a digital audio-out (SPDIF) connection. Furthermore, all critical connections are positioned at the rear of the unit for clean lines and easy home entertainment setup.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the Qosmio E15-AV101 with Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. Similar to the standard Windows XP but with several enhancements geared to the multimedia fan, this is one of today's most advanced operating systems. Other applications include Intuit's Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Office OneNote 2003 note-taking and management program, and several operational, multimedia, and online utilities.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve pounds or more, therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements." On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultraportables," super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two pounds and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 13.31 by 11.22 by 1.70 inches and 8.17 pounds without AC adapter, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is of average size.

Power
The unit is equipped with a six-cell lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 2.35 hours between charges. This is a shorter life expectancy than for many notebooks utilizing Intel's efficient Centrino technology, though not entirely unexpected given the system's impressive capabilities. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba's diregard for the consumer
If you want to experience the latest Windows Media Center 2005 edition software, this machine is not the right one. It comes loaded with Media Center 2004. Once you purchase it, you will realize that you wont have many of the functionality of Windows Media Center 2005 such as concurrent record and play, better interface etc. The worst part is Toshiba does not give you an upgrade path and you are stuck. It is a distasteful feeling to realize you have hardware that has outdated software the day you purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sellers who are Fraudlant
When I see an item advertised on the Amazon Web site and the product has a very low price and the Seller asks the Buyer to email them before they purchase, I question it.Most of these situations, the Seller asked for cash to be sent via Western Union and the Seller never sent the product. This same item was advertised for $1200 on 10/2/04 and was reported to be a fraud and removed from the Amazon site. Now, just two days later another Seller is selling the same item at a very low unreal price.I would like Amazon to investgate this Seller who is advertising this product at this low price.I ordered this product from another Vendor on another web site for $2299.I rate the product 5 stars, however question Sellers who have extremely low prices and ask that you email them prior to submitting the order.Thank you, Frank Robert Speece

5-0 out of 5 stars Qosmio -A Winner!
I buy a new laptop every year, but I don't upgrade until I find a machine with specs clearly exceeding the last. Qosmio is clearly a step above most other laptops. The first thing you notice when you crank it up for the very first time is the screen. Although the maximum resolution is a disapointing 1024X768 pixels, the screen is absolutely the brightest screen I have ever seen anywhere including most CRT's! The display is incredible! And, as it turns out, 1024X768 is a very comfortable resolution. I am grateful for the 80GB hardrive which comes with a toshiba utility to reduce hardrive noise... but for the life of me I can't figure out why.. the machine is very quiet and the Centrino chip runs in conjunction with the 855chipset flawlessly and cooly. I boosted the memory to 1GB. The machine comes with a single 512mb chip, and I reccomend going to 1GB... otherwise it's like driving a BMW at 55mph. The computer comes with windows media edition and two remote controls! I was flabergasted when I saw them both. One is used withing the windows environment for media center. The other is used to play dvd's or cd's or TV from a power off condition without loading windows! That makes this machine a wonderful DVD player with a 15" screen! It's very cool! but still 2 remotes? Couldn't they figure out how to make one do everything?
The DVD/RW super-multidrive is a huge improvement over previous versions I tested it and it will write a DVD video at 8X speeds provided you ensure you use 8X blanks. Previous toshiba laptops have included easy systems Drag N Drop CD+DVD but not this one. The supportive softwre is adequate... about all I can say. Tohsiba chose to limit the screen size to 15" when everyone else is moving to 15.4" wide screens and even 17" versions. But I find those machines extremely bulky. I like the portability of a 15" screen and the Brightness is worth it. Not sure of the value of a TV tuner in a laptop but I tested it and it works well... makes for cool bragging rights! the harmon kardon speakers are well above laptop average but not as good as the previous Toshiba 5205-S705. Battery time is rated at 2.5 hours plus. I haven't completely tested it but it's gotta be close. I'm sure if the screen was a standard version the battery would be at 3 to 3.5 hours. It weighs around 8 pounds which is about average for comparable 'other brands'. Although I am partial to Toshiba, I compared with Sony, HP, and Dell. Each had similar models... sort of. The Sony A series similarly equipped priced out about $300.00 more retail. the Hp was the cheapest but didn't measure up in features. Dell, continues to use DVD+'s only when everyone else is installing DVD+-RW's so that knocked them out. Setup was a breeze. toshiba includes works 7 and office student edition along with microsoft one note. The thing comes with a joint use secure digit memory slot or a sony memory stick slot (can't use both at once... which isn't a problem). I bought a san disk flashcard pcmcia card adapter for 12 bucks and now it takes about any kind of memory I could imagine. The ports are now no nonsense... no covers to flip open or remember to close.
Bottom line if you are looking for a 'multimedia' laptop powerhouse with decent battery time and the latest features at a resonable price... this one works. Reccomended accessories: another 512mb or ram (total 1gb;) a targus sport deluxe backpack; and consider upgrading the warrantee to system guard 3 yr (you drop it they fix it). ... Read more

Editorial Review

More often than not, when a game is in development for more than threeyears, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fifirst-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.

The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known asthe Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shapedplanet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to theplayer to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, thegame offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemyand allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will usethe terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to coverand aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump inand man the turret on the back of it.

The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per secondrather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level designis among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging withoutbeing frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-insingle-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes.

Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Haloraises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games willbe measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Outstanding game design
  • High replay value
  • Impressive AI
Cons:
  • Several maps are used multiple times
  • Save functions could have been better implemented
  • Graphics move at 30 frames per second, not 60

5-0 out of 5 stars The xbox's first killer app
I was the biggest Sony fanboy for so long.I refused to believe that the stupid xbox could outshine my gorgeous PS2.This all changed in the summer of '04.That was the fist time I played Halo.Since them I've probably beaten the game 30 times. My xbox is now my best friend, and sometimes my PS2 and Gamecube just have to sit and watch.

Halo is no doubt the original killer app for xbox.Halo 2 has since taken the crown thanks to its phenomenal multiplayer, but every loves to go back to Halo and relive that first rush they got playing the game and beating it on Legendary. In fact, I believe that this game was made to be played on Legendary. It may be frustrating at times, but when you finally beat it, there's a sense of relief like no other.

The single player game is awesome.Sure, the levels may be slightly repetitive, but you'll have your finger on the trigger so much that you won't even notice walking through the same hall a dozen times. When the end product overshadows any little things that may bother some people, you know you have a winner. The AI is amazing, especially on Legendary. You may quickly find yourself being ambushed, and those brushes with death make the game truly shine.

Halo brought on what many people believe is the biggest multiplayer revolution since Goldeneye on N64.With the addition of vehicles, it was easy to spend hours playing 4 player FFA or 2 vs 2 team games. When I discovered that you could link 4 xbox's together to system link, I was in awe.8 vs 8 games of CTF on Blood Gulch is still classic.NOTE:Halo is NOT xbox live capable.PC owners are reviewing on the xbox game stating how fun it is to play online. This feature is PC only for Halo.If you want online play, go for Halo 2.

So if you were like me, a Sony, or even a Nintendo fanboy, I dare you to give Halo a try.You might find yourself going to Best Buy tomorrow to pick up your own xbox. And at a newly released Platinum price of 19.99, it's hard to say no.

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes me dizzy
Halo and Halo 2 makes me dizzy when I play it. Maybe it's the running around for a long time doing nothing.I don't know why cuz Xbox Star Wars Republic Commando plays just find and I don't get sick.Republic Commmando is much more fun cuz you have squadmates and constant action.Halo is good cuz of co-op play though , unless your friends also get motion sickness from Halo.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bestX-box launch game
When halo was previewed at e3 2000, It was buggy and wasnt recieved well at all. But when the game was released, it blew people away. I believe it was the first game to ever use spectral high lighting (the shiny effect) and bump mapping. It only ran at 30 frames per sec, but ran good.

One of the most impressive things about halo is the story. It was so well crafted and done so well, they could use the game script and make a movie and have it be good. It had so many twists and turns, it was just great.

The sound was good too. Halo and Halo 2 boasts one of, if not the best video game soundtrack of all time. The music is Oscar quality.

Overall, Halo is one of the best action games ever made.

(these scores are for the time when it was released)

Concept- Make the X-Box a power player when it comes to consoles by making a phenominal game

Presintation- 10- Box art is cool and the cinimatics could win oscars for the directing.

Graphics- 9.5- wow, halo was one of the best looking games of the x-box launch, if not the best looking. New wethods were introduces with this game.

Sound- 10-Best music in a game? Yes. Best voice overs in a game? Yes.

Playability- 10- it is so fluid and easy to controll. It really shows off the x-box controller.

Entertainment- 9.6- The best x-box launch title and one of the best action games ever made.

Replay Value- 9.4- This game came out before X-box live, so the only way to play multiplayer was either split screen or system link.

Editorial Review

Take the power and flexibility of a dedicated computer gaming system and combine it with the easy-to-use, instant-on format of a high-end console system and what do you get? Well, if you also add in DVD playback ability and broadband Internet connectivity, you get Xbox.

The advanced components inside Xbox make it the undisputed powerhouse among current game consoles. A 733 MHz Intel main processor and 233 MHz graphics processor from industry leader nVidia deliver photorealistic graphics in real time. A cavernous hard drive stores saved games and characters, making flimsy memory sticks obsolete. The built-in Ethernet port enables super-fast multiplayer online gaming over a broadband Internet connection. Four game controller ports allow you and three of your buddies to play at the same time, or you can use them for other peripherals such as gamepads, light guns, and who knows what else?

But Xbox has more going for it than fancy innards. The Xbox's Windows-based operating system is a breeze to program on, earning it grateful accolades from Electronic Arts, Infogrames, THQ, and other game producers. The less time developers spend struggling with the operating system means the more time they spend tweaking gameplay, which ultimately results in better games. And games are what it's all about.

Well, games and the fun of owning a green-glowing game console that looks like it came from Darth Vader's living room. --Mike Fehlauer

The Xbox Holiday Bundle includes the Xbox console, the popular "S" style Microsoft controller, the games Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Tetris Worlds Online, a two-month trial subscription to the Xbox Live service, and all necessary cables to connect your Xbox to your TV. A DVD kit (sold separately) is required to access DVD playback ability. Xbox Live requires a broadband Internet connection and an Ethernet cable to connect your Xbox to your cable or DSL modem (sold separately).

1-0 out of 5 stars Need help with my XBOX
I got my XBOX In Feb 04, its May 04, and already it will not read my games, none of the 10 new games I got for it, or any of the DVDs.Where can I send this or get parts for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent System, but not without its flaws.
The Xbox is an excellent system for any gamer. The graphics are amazing, the sounds is killer and {most} of the games are excellent. Unfortunately, just like the PS2 and Gamecube, the Xbox is not without its faults.
Good:

Amazingly detailed graphics
Capable of incredible sound effects
Can play CDs and DVDs (not without a remote though)
4 Controller Ports
Good variety of Games
Well Supported by 3rd party developers
Some excellent exclusive games (Halo, Project Gotham 2, Halo 2)
150 dollar price point is 30 dollars less than PS2 (but still 50 dollars more than Gamecube)
Best Online Service (Xbox Live!)

The Bad

System weighs a lot-don't expecting anything you can bring on vacation
System is ugly-basically a big, clunky box
Lack of RPGS (save Knights of the Old Republic)
Lack of quirky (strange Japanese/Anime/just plain weird) games such as Mister Mosquito and Animal Crossing.
Lack of "kiddie" games- Xbox is geared toward the 15+ crowd
EA Sports games are not online compatible (the PS2 versions are though)

Overall the Xbox is an excellent system choice for gamers who love action/shooter/online games. The Xbox excels in these areas;in fact it blows the competition out of the water. But, due to the lack of games in certain genres, I have to knock the score down a star. That being said, if you are looking for a graphics powerhouse that is home to the best online games (Mech Assault, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell Pandora's Tommorow) and the best action games (Halo, Halo 2, Brute Force, Deus Ex 2), then you should purchase an Xbox as soon as possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great graphics, but some problems
The Xbox is a great system. It pumps out top notch graphics and has some killer exclusives. Unfortunately, it is not perfect, just like the other 2 next gen systems out.
Pros:

Amazing Graphics (The Xbox's graphics are much better than either Gamecubes' or Ps2's)
Built in 8 GB Hard Drive
Best online service (Xbox Live)
Halo, Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing 2- some of the best games ever
The Controller S is comfortable
Good third party support

Cons:

The system is massive and weighs around 10-12 pounds
Have to buy a remote for 30 dollars to play DVDs
Basically No Rpgs for the system (Except the excellent Star Wars: Knights of the old republic)
Not many niche games (quirky games a la Pa Rappaa or Mr Mosquito for PS2 are absent on the Xbox)

Overall, the XBox is a graphics and sound powerhouse that has a very bright future. Unfortuantely, its lack of RPGs and niche games force me to knock down the score a star. Still an excellent choice for any gamer ... Read more

Toshiba Satellite P25-S609 Media Center Notebook PC (3.00-GHz Pentium 4 (Hyper-Threading), 1024 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive)

Editorial Review

Considerably larger (16.4 by 11.5 by 1.8 inches, 9.9 pounds) than the average portable computer yet packed with more high-end amenities than most stay-at-home PCs, Toshiba's new Satellite P25 series of "desktop replacement" notebooks is designed for discriminating individuals who won't accept anything less than the very best. This model, the stunning Satellite P25-S609, sits at the very top of the P25 lineup as one of the most capable and exciting notebooks manufactured to date. For starters, the Satellite P25-S609 is a true portable multimedia powerhouse. Toshiba has fitted the unit with a whopping 17-inch widescreen display screen capable of dazzling 1440 by 900 resolutions. It has added a pair of high-quality harman/kardon stereo speakers and enclosed a versatile DVD multi-drive through which you can not only watch the latest Hollywood releases and burn audio and data CDs, but also record your own home movies to DVD media. An nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics chipset with 64 MB dedicated video memory ensures solid 3-D support for the latest games and 3-D graphics applications.

Moreover, the unit is blazingly fast. Driving the Satellite P25-S609 is a high-end 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with a scorching 800 MHz system bus clock speed and Hyper-Threading Technology for more efficient CPU usage. Matched with this speedy processor is a staggering 1024 MB alloent of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to a 2048 MB). Though the rated speed of this RAM is only average, there's so much of it that you can multitask to your heart's content.

Other critical features include a huge 80 GB hard disk (more than enough room for a thorough roster of applications and a massive library of multimedia files), four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals such as scanners or external drives, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast interaction with devices such as digital camcorders, and two Type II and Type III PC Card slots. Communication facilities include 802.11a/g wireless networking, 10/100 Ethernet LAN and an integrated 56K modem.

The bundled software package features Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, Microsoft Works, Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2003, and a variety of multimedia utilities. Battery life expectancy is not one of the unit's strong suits -- you can expect just 1.5 hours from the standard Lithium Ion cell.

4-0 out of 5 stars 10 Pound PowerHouse
I bought this laptop three months ago, so I should be able to give it a good review having used it every day since the purchase date.I am a laptop user, I don't like desktops because I am always on the move and I need my files on one computer to grab and go.Whether it be work related or a LAN party. So far I have to used it to play UT2004(all graphics on max), Splinter Cell & Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Counter-Strike Condition Zero, and a few others. It plays them well.I was definitely impressed as I heard that the P25 can't play games that well due to the 64 meg video card. The blue housing is beautiful. The screen in huge and definitely viewable from all angles. The wi-fi works great and is backwards adaptable to 801.11 B and A standards. It does all the tasks that I require flawlessly. Also the speakers sound great, they are definitely loud and clear. The placement of them also allows games and movies to be heard as though two speakers were behind your head for a surround sound feeling. Also the DVD burner is an excellent addition.Being able to add files to a RW DVD then delete them later is like having the equivalent of 8 cd's packed into one at your disposal. All in all I highly recommend this computer but I do have some complaints.First, the screen is a little dim.During DVD playing or game playing I don't notice it though.Second, I don't really like this border around the keyboard, they could have made the keyboard bigger.Third, the speakers have a lot of treble but no bass. For the price I paid they could have slipped in a subwoofer like the previous models.Other than those 3 gripes I consider this laptop a top performer and tough competition for those who are in the market for the Apple 17 inch screen G5's or any laptop for that matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended formultimedia work & gorgeous screen
This computer (next to my beau) is the light of my life. I've had it for 11 months and am head over heals in love. I use it for photo manipulation with Photoshop CS, web development with Dreamweaver MX 2004, animation creation with Flash MX 2004, authoring multimedia projects with Director MX, a bit of music mixing with Adobe Audition, streaming music from Rhapsody, listening to NPR and watching DVDs.

All my peripherals (Epson Photo printer, iRiver mp3 player, SanDisk media reader, cordless mouse) plug and play nicely together, all at the same time. Thebig, beautiful monitor is the best feature. Watching DVDs in bed is such a treat!

The computer is a dream to type on. Feels like there are shock absorbers or pockets of air beneath each key.

The harman/kardon speakers are the only drawback. Having heard the speakers on the Toshiba Satellite 5205-S704, which are fantastic, rectangular speakers that actually raise up above the keyboard area, I had high expectations. But the volume on the P25 speakers is far too low. I overcome this with Creature speakers plugged in.

Whilst I wouldn't want to transport this computer with me every day due to the weight, it does fit in my bike messenger bag for those occasional trips across town or overseas. Not many laptop backpacks will fit the 17" screen.

The WiFi is wonderful. Even in a small apartment. I love being able to take it to the kitchen table, the living room couch or the bed with no cords dangling off.

I've worked on 2 laptops and 4 desktop computers for multimedia in the past and this one is by far the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!
I bought my P25-S609 brand new from Circuit City on 1/24/04. I bought the $300 mega-warranty through Toshiba upon registeration. I have never hated a computer or a company like this before. 45 days after shelling out over $3000 for everything listed above, my HD starts clicking and sputtering. Long story short, total hard drive failure and data loss. After a week of waiting, my repaired laptop came back to me. I spent over $200 on software suites to create back-ups and restore disks to try and avoid ever losing everything like that again. Big help they turned out to be. Here we are, less than 5 months after buying it and already having the HD replaced.....the HD has failed AGAIN. The situation is such that I cant even get my back up disks to restore data. Toshiba wants to just replace the HD again. FORGET IT! I have a warranty that covers replacement should I physically break the unit, yet when I I politely request that my lemon of a notebook please be replaced, I am told no. I am fed up. I lost everything, AGAIN!!! Toshiba could care less. Looks like my notebook is headed for a head on collision with my Range Rover....OOOPS! And Toshiba America is being handled through my state's Attorney General's Office.....better luck to those of you out there with this computer! ... Read more
