Segway Human Transporter (HT) i Series
    by Enroute Solutions Inc.
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: November 2002. World's first dynamically stabilized Human Transporter; forward and backward maneuvering guided by rider's natural motions.

The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a truly 21st-century idea. A two-wheeled electric vehicle that's practical, efficient, slightly miraculous, and an undeniably fun way of getting around, it's as different from a bicycle or motorcycle as the original personal computers were from their lumbering, mainframe predecessors.

    Control
In our tests, we rode the Segway HT in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Zipping along on the little platform was so steady and comfortable, we quickly forgot how much technology was at work to keep us balanced. The Segway HT moves forward with cues from your body language--the subtle leaning you use to balance yourself while walking or running. When you lean forward, the Segway HT goes forward. A walking lean produces a walking rate, a steeper running lean can bring the machine to its top speed of 12.5 mph. The Segway HT stops when you right yourself again.

Steering is controlled separately with a small twist-grip on the left handlebar. The Segway HT's two-wheeled design makes it quite agile--it can do sharp turns and turn completely in place. Sharper turns require slight leaning into the turns, as you'd expect, but the Segway HT helps by actively regulating turn responsiveness based on your speed. One small complaint: using a throttle-like control for turns instead of acceleration did take some getting used to, but the inconvenience was minor and went away over time.

Overall, we were surprised how quickly we were able to get comfortable on the Segway HT. A novice can be underway in seconds (with supervision) and ascending ramps and turning figure eights in minutes. After training and a few hours of use, a rider should feel comfortable with a wide range of activities.

    Riding
The Segway HT moves briskly along on both paved and rough terrain, taking ruts and potholes bumpily but with no loss of control, even for the beginner. Modest hills were ascended with ease and without much discernable effort. All things told, the Segway HT seemed rugged enough to provide reliable transportation in pedestrian environments ranging from rural trails to the sidewalks of a congested city. And utility aside, it's worth stating that the element of machine-assisted balance was a continuous delight. We simply had more control over our movements than we previously could have imagined possible. This was particularly true on downhill rides, where our body language had a degree of command over gravity so unusual that it produced a dreamy, floating feeling.

The Segway HT is not a medical device; if you can't easily stand upright or endure some jostling on varied terrain, it will not solve these problems for you. But while the Segway HT cannot provide balance that the rider doesn't already have, its responsiveness brings a subtle beauty to the rider's movements. We watched more experienced riders start, stop, swoop, and turn as gracefully as figure skaters. In fact, the machine's ease of use could create some overconfidence. The Segway HT has not suspended the laws of physics--its wheels need traction. While the machine will keep itself level under almost any situation we could imagine, a careless rider who drops a wheel over a curb, or tries to turn too quickly on a slippery surface, certainly could take a tumble. Segway advises that riders wear a safety helmet (like a bicycle helmet) and start out in the Beginner mode before moving on to the faster settings.

    User-Friendly Design
The Segway HT's controls are simple. A single round display on the handlebars shows either a smiley face (meaning "get on") or a frown face ("get off"). A graphic surrounding the face indicates the battery level. The Segway has no brakes--slowing down involves the same process as acceleration--and its gentle rate precludes any need for a speedometer. We timed its startup speed from the off position to ready to ride: pressing an encrypted "key" to the key port (the key looks like a large watch battery on a plastic fob), hitting the start button, and waiting for the smiley face to come up took a little more than one second.

This machine is clearly designed for close interaction with pedestrians. Its footprint is only a bit wider than a large man, so we were able to do things like ride comfortably in an elevator with another Segway HT rider and a pedestrian, with an almost disappointing lack of bustle or incident. The machine can haul 75 pounds of cargo and still support a 250-pound person, though you'll need touse the HT's soon-to-come mounted accessory bags for any serious buying trip.

    Usability
Having ridden a Segway HT, we think almost anyone would be delighted to try this machine. Inevitably, however, one must ask about how usable it is. Clearly, it isn't a car: it won't carry multiple passengers or much luggage, go long distances, or protect you from the elements. Still, we thought of many circumstances where the Segway HT could be a fun and practical alternative to other modes of transportation. We can see potential users as regular folks traveling to and from work each day, students and professors in college towns, city dwellers who take many short trips, retirees in Sunbelt resort communities, vacationers traveling with RVs, and people with easy access to nature trails and walkways.

    Well-Built Construction
We had the opportunity to look into the guts of the Segway HT in its pre-assembled state. Inside it was clean and simple, and the few moving parts, such as the gears, struck us as rugged and well made. There are no cooling fans; the circuits and engine are cooled through their contact with the platform's heat-drawing aluminum casing. Each finished HT is tested both at the software level and for quality riding on an obstacle course in the assembly plant. See the technical specifications for more information.

    Conclusion
We're convinced that anyone who tries a Segway HT will be smiling in minutes. The other advantage is that early purchasers will certainly be the first on their blocks to have one. But for how long? We think we'll all be seeing much more of the Segway HT in the future. --Erik Hammen

    Pros:

    • Very high build quality
    • Environmentally friendly, extremely energy efficient
    • Requires little storage space
    • Newness factor--you've never ridden anything like this before
    • Fun to ride, and looks cool

    Cons:

    • Purchase price may be prohibitive for many potential users, though the cost is partially offset long term by nominal upkeep
    • Laws regarding legal riding areas (sidewalk versus street) vary from state to state
    • Minor inconvenience: rubber plug-in protectors on the machines seemed a bit loose, flopping around a bit on the more rigorously used machines, inconsistent with generally excellent build standards
    • Accessories, like carrying bags and lights, will not be available until spring 2003

    From the Manufacturer
The Segway Human Transporter is the first transportation product to stand, balance, and move in the same way we do. It harnesses a unique technology called "dynamic stabilization"--the result of more than a decade of research, development and testing, and tens of thousands of hours in field trials--to constantly monitor and balance the Segway HT and rider.

The Segway HT allows riders to travel short distances in dense environments that would be prohibitive to other transportation devices. An amazingly elegant design makes the Segway HT a part of you, sensing subtle changes in your balance and responding immediately. The Segway HT has a level of maneuverability never before seen on wheels--it can balance in place, move forwards and backwards, and turn in place.

Purchase of a Segway HT includes a training session on its operation and features, in order to properly prepare a new rider for safe and enjoyable operation of this new technology.

Let me tell you, there is no better way for a human to be transported than the Segway Human Transporter.I was getting tired of walking on my legs, then I got an iSeries Human Transporter for my birthday. That day changed my life.I now can have any girl I want and have made millions on the stock market. How many human tensporters can do that for you?

There are many fake Human Transporters out there. This is the only Human Transporter that will fulfill all of your wildest dreams.

Keep an eye for the Segway Rocketpack Humanoid Flying Modulus. It is in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tour + Toy but...
    It's not very functional.

I had the opportunity to tour Chicago downtown on one of the city architecture tours with segways for about three hours. I can't tell you how giddy I was to get on one. I had seen policemen patrolling around parks and airport with them. It took me about two minutes to get into the balance of it. The controls were very intuitive and easy to use. The whole system is sorta dummy proof. It shuts down itself if you get off it, it refuses to go past a certain speed limit (in fact, almost pushing you off of it after you reach a certain point), and it can stop on a dime.

After using it for a couple hours and after reading a couple reviews here, I have to agree- the segway isn't really intended for more than an expensive toy. It's not comparable to a mopeg or a bike. Our tour was about two hours and half long and at the end of it, my battery was almost at its end. We only went around the Lakefront and to Millenium Park and back to the Adler Planeterium, a mere area of a couple miles. And our batteries were dangerously low. The only way I can see myself using a Segway in an every day environment is if I happened to live like ten minutes from work. Past that, and the segway is pretty much a waste. It would take too long to charge and too expensive to replace the battery for it to be cost-effective. I could take a bus, train, or even bike to a destination for cheaper and faster.

This is not a rip on the Segway technology. I just think the machine isn't made to be very functional. On our ride around the parks, I noticed how poorly it performed on uneven ground (gravel, water, grass). Every little bump was almost a thud when I crossed them. I had to be watch out for cracks and crevices when riding it. Things I wouldn't have done if I was riding a bike. This is all based on my experience with the iSeries. I haven't used the rugged version of the Segway and can imagine it would be better but at a thousand more, it's kinda a moot point.

Overall, I'm glad I got a chance to ride a Segway. I was dying to try one. I couldn't contain the smile I had, as I zoomed past staring strangers and an embarassed girlfriend. But, I couldn't see myself buying one, even though, I work and live in downtown Chicago.

5-0 out of 5 stars This human transporter is alright by me
Well, let me be the first to tell you that The Segway Human Transporter is a wonderful innovation. I'd been waiting a good while for a quality human transporter, and finally, I felt my waiting had paid off. This baby hit the market, I quickly dished out the 5K needed, and the transporting began. Everything was great, laziness was at an all time high, I really felt like the future was now. "Look at me and my transporter" I'd shout, then I'd turn and mumble to myself, "You fools and your walking and non-space age way of transporting." Life was peachy. Then it came, my boss, Gargon IV, said there was a dilemma on the planet Xaoton 99. I was all over it. I had my Segway transport me, (bet you didn't know it was capable of galactic transport) all the way to Xaoton, with the Segway making the trip quite comfortable and relaxing. I arrived at Xaoton and things were all messed up. I soon found myself in a sticky situation, but it was nothing that the Segway couldn't get me out of. Things got ugly. To make a long story short, the Segway overcame a highly advanced Xaotion army with highly highly evolved technology and all kinds of super high tech lazer guns. So the planet of Xaoton 99 came to peace in the end and everyone was happy

And boy was I glad that my knees didn't catch a lazer because I just wouldn't look as cool anymore on my Segway without the lower half of my legs. The Segway is an amazing improvement in human transporting, it's amazing we can look ahead to the wonderful world of hover transporters travelling warp 10. The Segway Human Transporter is a great start, now lets keep the ball rolling.

Canon EOS-1Ds 11.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
    by Canon
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $8,999.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Canon EOS-1Ds is the world's highest-resolution professional digital camera, featuring the first-ever full-frame 35mm sensor with 11.1 million effective pixels. The EOS-1Ds captures astounding detail and color, almost doubling the resolution considered state of the art for a digital SLR camera in the world today (September 2002).

With its extremely high resolution, the EOS-1Ds is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of professional photographers--including studio, commercial, reportage, or fashion photography--who need the ultimate in digital image quality.

    Optics
The camera's imaging engine is one of the keys to its exceptional quality. The advanced chip assembles and processes image data captured by the sensor to achieve color accuracy and wide tonal range equivalent to digitally scanned images from conventional film-based cameras.

The EOS-1Ds can capture images at approximately 3 frames per second for a 10-frame burst, even at the highest-quality setting. It also has almost three times as many pixels as the super-fast EOS-1D.

Each of the camera's 45 focusing points is linked directly to Canon's exclusive 21-zone metering system. In addition, the metering system also allows photographers to choose from center weighted, central partial, central spot, focusing-point linked spot, or multispot metering.

The EOS-1Ds features a color matrix function: Five settings provide a choice of two color spaces (standard sRGB or expanded Adobe RGB 1998) and four variations in color characteristics for sRGB. This feature applies to JPEG as well as RAW images, and allows EOS-1Ds image quality to be matched to the requirements of the subject or output device, ranging from four-color offset presses to desktop color Bubble Jet printers.

    More Features

    • Ability to dial in color temperatures to meet specific lighting conditions
    • 10 white balance (WB) modes and WB bracketing provide maximum flexibility and superb color accuracy
    • ISO speed bracketing allows you to fix aperture and shutter speeds, yet shoot at three different equivalent film speeds

5-0 out of 5 stars 11 Mega Pixels is not a random number!
I've recently learned some interesting detail that came from a talented amateur photographer.A friend of mine from work, had done a number of spectacular scenic shots. He thought to enter some of the better ones into a professional competition. While he had a good Cannon digital, (I believe it was a 7 or 8 mp) requirements for digital are 11 mp minimums. While expanding the lower resolution is allowed, it would still fall a bit short (since it only allows a certain percentage). It seems that professional film use cameras, typically deliver the equivalent of 20 mp. The proper film is expensive, and getting it developed is not as easy as taking it to the local Photomat.

I know computers and software. My programming exploits placed me for a time at Polaroid ID systems. Polaroid ID, (prior to its sale by the parent company in 2001) produced drivers licenses, and ID card solutions, for more than half the United States, plus several countries. I have a background in video games programming by training. What I can tell you from this is that you need a fast processor to create, and store an image 11 mp in size.Cannon's custom processor seems to be up to the task.My friend told me his current camera used the same processor, and produced the highest resolution shots in about 1/5th of a second. This model does about three continuous shots per second. While not quite film or motion capture speed, it's still good enough not to inhibit your creativity.

If photography is a serious hobby, or you are a budding professional, this might just be your camera.Existing professionals will probably make up their own minds on when to jump to digital, and what equipment best meets their needs.Cannons entry here seems reasonable for a quality digital camera. You may see many other cameras pump up their numbers in a race to get the higher resolutions. They seem to be bristling with bells and whistles. There's a not so subtle difference with a professional model like this. That being it has features for professional imaging and the speed of getting to that next high quality shot.

The other cameras will raise the bar one day, but for now they are best used by non-professionals.If you compare the camera's specifications, you'll find speed, and feature limitations on those cheaper models. This is not the camera to take on that vacation to the mountains.A good four-mega pixel model will keep all your family photo albums up to date.If however, your vision for looking at the world through the camera's eye extends beyond that, this may be the camera for you.BTW, remember this is a body only, you buy your optics separately, and it's not advisable to go cheap either.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't want to limit your creativity ... this is it.
After years of being a very faithful Sony user (I still like Sony and their products) I finally did the big leap, as in my mind the technology is finally there ... I bought a Canon EOS-1Ds 11.1 Megapixel camera body. Out of necessity I had to buy a set of EF lenses as well. I spent this years toy budget on just one purchase, but then THIS IS NOT TOY!

My last Sony was a F828 and before that a P10. The F828 is a great consumer product for the price, but it actually made me do the leap as good as it is, as it brought back my spirit for creating a REALLY good picture. I started to spend so much time to get to the right photo spot at the right time, that I did not want to have a lack of functionality then. I used to do a lot of photography 20 years ago on film, but returned as a point and shoot fotographer when digital came about. To say it with fellow countryman 'Arnie' - "I'm back."

First I need to say that all Amazon partnershops performed and delivered flawlessly, my special mention goes to Adorama Camera. I would usually be worried to spend so much money on the web, but Amazon takes that away.

Now to the 'beast' itself the EOS-1Ds body. I will not go into all the functional details, as to my mind they are all correct as stated. The camera is great to hold and work with total confidence. But at first - big disappointment. I was unable to concentrate on working with a professional camera. I was too used to point and shoot and expected the camera to do it all for me. Well, it does not. You need to know or learn photography for this one. It is now four weeks and 2500 pictures later and finally there is only one reason for a photo not to be perfect - ME!

Biggest difference to other products is the film-size 24x36 CCD and the ability to set the ASA film sensitivity up to 1250 on the fly rather than having to change film. Not always is a tripod at hand or the photo subject would wait until you set it up and then hold still for a 2 second exposure. I could not ask the helicopter pilot to stop the vibration during a dawn flight over the Las Vegas Strip. Setting to ASA1250 shortened exposure time to s/50. The picture noise that you get as a consequence is dramatically reduced by the noise reduction feature and much less than the grain of a high-sensitivity film.

Cautions and recommendations: Learning how to clean the sensor from dust and dirt without damaging it is essential. This camera is VERY heavy you will need a strong tripod to hold it. Buy a second battery, even so the charging is quick and it usually lasts for two normal days of use. Using a CF card reader is easier than buying a Firwire attachment for your PC. Use 2GB high-speed Compactflash for convenience, it will give you 400 pictures in JPG. Feel free to send me questions, which I will answer as much as I can.

I have shot 35mm for 30 years and paid for the best prints from the best labs and they just can't compare with high end digital prints. The detail goes way beyond 35mm and easily challenges medium format.I am still learning color manipulation on the computer and occasionally I get better color from a Velvia slide - which I am now shooting with the same Canon lenses and a 1v body - but overall it is becoming increasingly clear that film is as dead as video tape and vinyl records.I traded up to the 1Ds from a D60, which also produced prints much better than 35mm.The drawback to the D60 was a poor autofocus and a less than full frame sensor, which limits the use of wide angle lenses for landscape photos. The 1Ds solves those problems and potentially makes larger format cameras obsolete at the same time.

The only problem I have found is that the 45 sensor autofocus setting does not work with a very wide angle (16mm or 15mm fisheye) lens. For some reason, it won't focus at infinity.Switching to the center only focus sensor solves the problem. The 1v and Elan 7 do the same thing. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: June 2003 The world's fastest personal computer and the first with a 64-bit processor -- which means it breaks the 4 GB barrier and can use up to 8 GB of main memory.

Hailed as the fastest personal computer ever released and featuring a truly remarkable set of technological breakthroughs, Apple's Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A is clearly designed for discriminating individuals who simply won't settle for anything less than the very best. For extreme performance and unrelenting power, this, the top of the line Power Mac G5 model, is as good as it gets.

Driven by not one but two 2 GHz Power PC G5 processors, 512 MB ultra-fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory per processor (expandable to a gargantuan 8 GB!), and an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM video memory, the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A certainly seems impressive. But those figures only begin to tell the story. For its latest desktop, Apple teamed with IBM to redesign its leading-edge CPU architecture. Accordingly, the new Power PC G5 is the world's first 64-bit processor. With two of these 2 GB powerhouses running in tandem -- each sporting an industry-leading 1 GHz frontside bus -- the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A delivers nearly double the throughout of a single 3 GHz Pentium 4-based machine and, according to Apple, runs standard Photoshop tests at 2.2 times the speed of a single 3 GHz Pentium.

But there's more than raw power lurking inside the futuristic anodized aluminum case. For starters, Apple has compartmentalized the unit into four independent sections to direct appropriate airflow to each key component. A total of nine fans work to keep things cool, yet all are extremely low-speed. Thusly the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A runs three times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure.

Apple has loaded the unit with data handling features, including a monstrous 160 GB 7200 RPM hard disk and a DVD-R/CD-RW combo drive (4X DVD write speed) through which you can archive information, play and burn audio CDs, enjoy the latest movies and record home videos. To help you transfer data to and from external peripherals such as optical drives and digital camcorders and cameras, the system also sports two high-speed FireWire 400 ports, one ultra-fast FireWire 800 port, three USB 2.0 ports and two USB 1.1 ports.

Other key amenities include a convenient Apple Pro keyboard, an Apple Pro mouse, three available high-performance PCI-X slots for future expansion, and a broad array of multimedia and Internet software. Connectivity facilities include an integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port, a built-in 56K modem, and AirPort Extreme wireless support (with an AirPort Extreme card). Speakers and display are available separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I HAVE NO REGRETS!!!
    PROS:
Amazing speed, and extremely quiet! I'm quite surprised that no one has yet given a review to this wonderful piece of equipment. I guess you don't need to. That statement about "you get what you pay for" is very true. But if you actually look at it, if I were to buy a top of the line dual AMD Opteron or Pentium Xeon system with the same basic configuration, I'd be spending about the same amount of money. And as a graphic designer, I almost went totally PC when I purchased a Pentium 2.8GHz HT (Hyper Threading - the so-called "multitasking" want a be Mac processor) for my wife. Well much to my dismay, I was using a demo of Adobe Photoshop CS to test the PCs' skills, only to find out that when I went to save a 160MBfile, that I only saved about 7 to 8 seconds of time compared to my 5 year old G4 (400MHz single processor) system. Mind you, they both had the same amount of RAM. That's when I remembered testing one of the machines at an Apple store a few months before I almost made that fatal decision to go PC. I saved a 250MB Photoshop file in about 9 seconds!!! Now, the new G5 that's out is the dual 2.5's. So that means the dual 2.0 machines are $500 less (now, $2,500.00). And if you're like me, and can take a couple of weeks to spend some dedicated time to finding a better price, you can actually save about a thousand or more buying it used. I did. I purchased a G5 dual 2.0GHz, 250MB HD, with 1.5GB of RAM and the extended Apple Care Warranty; the full three years was already included with the machine, for a total of $2,400.00. (...) I was a little scared, because I heard about some horror stories about people who got taken of there hard earn money not to get what they paid for. I even found out that the person who owned this G5 was only 115 miles away. So I picked it up myself. He even had it open so I could try it out first. (...)Then you will find out what the going rate is (and also know who the "scammers" are who are trying to take you for your money). Email as many people that seem to be reasonably priced and ask for three things that you have a right to know; 1) What there serial number is on the machine 2) Where they bought it along with the original receipt 3) Get the owners full name and then call Apple (800-275-2273), to get through to the Apple Care Dept. (from last I checked, ext. 3), verify if the G5 belongs to them and if it's still under warranty. Also, ask if there is an option to extend it to the full 3 years; you will have to pay an additional $249.00, but it's completely worth every penny. I know that I'm going off the "review" topic here, but I believe that it is just as important, because of the fact that these machines are not cheap, and they were not available to buy (because of backorder situations, even through Apple), and I know that people want to save as much as they can when purchasing this system (or one like it). But again, we're going back to the beginning of what I said; "you get what you pay for." Another thing to add about this G5, they designed this machine from the inside-out, not the other way around; like I see in some PC towers that are built. The way this system is cooled is simply incredible. I was just reading MaxiumPC's (Sept. '04) review on case towers that just came out, and still NOTHING can touch the way they built this tower. Please do yourself a favor, if you can, either go to an Apple Store, CompUSA, Best Buy to physically try out a 1.8, 2.0, 2.5GHz G5 yourself, or check out there website (www.apple.com). You'll get more information than I can give here in this review. Again, I want to let everyone know (who reads this), that if I sound bias at all, I'm not, I REALLY was about to switch over to a PC; even my close friends were shocked when I said it to them. I actually felt humbled at one point saying that statement. But I'm glad I didn't make that mistake. If you're looking for a workhorse, this is the machine for you; and I'm ONLY talking to GRAPHIC DESIGNERS, VIDEO PRODUCERS AND THE LIKE; NOT to those who play video games on these machines. If you're looking for a gaming machine, then buy a PC. You'll have more to choose from, with thousands of games and more options to making your PC work better with faster framerates by overclocking the processor and graphics card, (only if you're into that kind of stuff and that you know what you're doing - only if - you overclock your PC).
(...) If you do your homework on this, (Graphic Designers - G5 Mac and PC Gamers - OverdrivePC) in the end, it will be worth it! I hope I've been helpful and good fortune to all who read this.

    CONS:
None that I know of. Except I would give it a 9 (out of 10) for ease of use, because I was very acclimated to using OS9. OSX takes a day or two of adjusting, but it is a far better operating system to use in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a machine for professionals!
The G5 is meant to be "the professional's machine" for graphics and video. After you get past the "platform war reviews" on this list and look at the unitand what it can do, it does all it claims and more.Mac has and I hope always will dominate the digital video, audio and graphics markets.Anyone who cannot get this machine up and running out of the box in a few minutes, should probably invest in a toaster; because its obvious you were not meant to use a computer. The latest OS, Panther is sleek easy to use and pretty much runs the machine for you.Its also the only unix based OS on the market with a GUI.Which means that you can slip into terminal mode and run lines of code, while doing several other, heavy duty tasks in the background; that's background tasks that would bring any PC to its knees.By the way, Panther is the only system on the market that truly takes advantage of multi processors built into these boxes.

No matter what the semi pro's and novice users, who are loyal to PC's post, this machine simply blows any windows based/intel system out of the water.I have used every machine available for 25 + years as a film and video editor, (the toughest job for any machine) and Mac is the king of the hill for power, ease of use and reliable service..for the pro user PERIOD.Anyone who claims to work in a pro graphics shop that is PC based, really does not work in a pro shop; because there are no truly pro graphics shops that are PC based.

The price is as always a bit higher on a Mac, because you get what you pay for.If you are not a professional computer user, get a PC and you will be happy. If you are a professional that needs the fastest machines available, as well as the most reliable machines on the market, you need a Mac G5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Video Card a Minor Problem at Best
I've been a PC user since the good old days of the soldering iron, my last mac was an old powerbook running OS 6 or 7, either way - it was a long time ago.The main thing thats been keeping me from getting a Mac was price, and I must say - it's getting a lot better.I bought the dual 2.0Ghz configuration from the apple store along with the new 20" LCD (that still hasn't shipped ~_~) and it rocks. The biggest problem people have mentioned on the various reviews is the 64mb card - if it means that much to you, go to the Apple Store on their site and configure your own system with a 9800 or an x800 or a different 9600 if you'd like.I got a 9800 personally.I don't understand how anyone can claim a PC runs faster than this, perhaps with video games but for standard use (this coming from a person to whome standard refers to compiling java) its much better. ... Satisfy a roomful of guests calling for caffeine with the Jura-Capresso Impressa S9, the luxury automobile of home espresso centers. Both beautiful and powerful, the machine grinds, tamps, and brews delicious shots of espresso in 50 seconds and steams or froths milk without a wait. It's built with a dual 1250-watt ThermoBlock heating system, a forceful 18-bar power pump, and a distinctive emphasis on choice. You can steam milk manually or automatically, make drinks with or without foam, and grind for light or dark roasts. You can tailor your drinks' strength (5 to 16 g of coffee), size (1/2 to 16 ounces), and temperature (regular or high). You can even adjust the machine for water hardness, raise and lower the coffee spout, and regulate the separate hot water spigot.

Backing these options is a professional-grade, solid steel conical burr grinder with six settings and an aroma-saving design. A pre-infusion cycle conditions grounds for maximum flavor and the CLARIS water filter removes impurities for improved taste. The S9 also includes an illuminated coffee area, cup-heating deck, separate funnel for pre-ground coffee, and automatic indicators on the water tank, grounds hopper, and filter cartridge. The bean reservoir holds 10 ounces--enough for 40 shots--and the water tank holds 96 ounces. The unit also features auto shut-off, auto-on, self-rinse, and self-cleaning. The programmable control panel uses a two-line display with simple instructions in seven languages.

With its dual-tone bronze finish and chrome accents, the Impressa S9 is undoubtedly a looker. It is also designed to fit under kitchen cabinets, measuring 14 by 14 by 15-1/4 inches with a retractable power cord. Jura-Capresso includes an instructional booklet, video, and CD-ROM, plus a full one-year warranty for home use and a six-month one for offices. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Over $2000 for a coffee maker/machine??????????
All I have to say is, ANYONE but a HUGE restaurant, COFFEE SHOP, etc. who would pay this much for a coffee maker needs to have their head examined!!!! Their are people in this world STARVING and you are paying this for a COFFEE MAKER??? What is this world coming to??? You're RIDICULOUS!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressa-ive
I have one at home and one in the office. We have used them every day for the last year and never a problem. It automatically brews everything from espresso extra strong, to cafe latte. Kids use the hot water feature for soup mixes and put chocolate milk in the frothing attachment for easy, foamy hot chocolate.

Our machines grinds fresh coffee beans, tamps the coffee, brews and then extracts the used coffee into a neat little bin. We especially like the large capacity water reservoir for multiple brews per day.

This is light years ahead of other home brewing systems and makes obsolete most home espresso makers. The machine paid for itself in less than six months when compared to what we used to spend in coffee shops for inflated hot milk and coffee drinks. Great video instructions supplement a very adequate instruction book. Wonderful consumer help at their toll free number.

1-0 out of 5 stars I question Capresso's quality commitment
Below is the message I Sent to Capresso. I think it explains it all. They did not reply until i sent them a follow up letter

    Dear Madam or Sir:

I was very excited about purchasing one of your Capresso Super Automatic Impressa S series machines. The design concepts and convenience appealed to me. Usually (not always!) the higher priced items tend to be of better quality and your machines definitely fall into the higher priced category. Therefore I assumed they would be of the utmost quality. Boy was I wrong.Rather giddy I took the 45 minute drive down to ******** ******* in Wrentham, MA to purchase an Impressa S7 only to find they had none in stock, but they did have factory refurbished C3000 machines. So in having good luck with other manufactures refurbished products, and assuming your company was thorough in its refurbishing process I was comfortable purchasing one at its $1200.00 price tag. Upon arriving home and opening the package I was rather disappointed. The machine was filthy there was still grounds in it, and the surfaces and catch trays all had dried up coffee and sediment on them. So I read the manual and cleaned the machine the best I could. When I went to set it up and attach the frothXpress I found that the Steam nozzle was missing. Figuring I could call and get one shipped to me Monday I continued on. Plugging in the machine and going through the initial rinse phase I got a message to fill the system and press steam. The system was full of water and beans and the steam half of the machine worked. When trying to make a cup of coffee it would grind the beans and then just dump them into the waste tray. After looking through the manual again and checking your website I decided that the machine was defective and boxed it back up. The next morning I loaded it back in the car and made the 45 Minute ride back to the store to exchange it. After making the 45 Minute ride home with the new unit I was happy to find that this one had the steam nozzle. This one was also filthy. During cleaning of the second unit I found that the used coffee container and aroma protection lid where missing from this one. When I powered up the second unit neither the steam nor the brew system functioned with the system full of water and beans. With this I packed it back up and spent an hour and a half to return it to the store, and did not get another for obvious reasons. Mind you that both boxes appeared to be unopened and factory sealed. With all that I found wrong with both units it makes me wonder if your refurbishing process consists boxing them back up and shipping them out or if the fixed units got mixed with the damaged units. I can not see how a company could ship a filthy machine like that with the health concerns involved.

I decided to give your company a second chance today Monday, March 07, 2005 by calling your customer support line. I wanted to find a stocking local retailer where I could buy a new Impressa S7 and express my dismay about the problems I had this weekend. I wanted to buy it locally so if I had more problems I could return it to the store instead of shipping it somewhere. The service representative got me locations down in Providence, RI about an hour and fifteen minutes away from me but seemed irritated that she had to do it for me. I had already tried the net but it returned no results. When I started to mention my problems she showed no interest at all and just worked to get me off the phone without addressing any of my concerns for the product. This left me with a bad taste in my mouth and no real desire to spend $1800.00 on a machine made by your company. The People at ******* ******* where professional, courteous, and sympathetic to my problem though there was nothing they could do for me. It is a shame your company is not the same. All this from a company that makes the claim "People and Attitudes Make a Difference!
Once you own a Capresso product we want to make sure that you feel completely comfortable about your decision" on your website. I am pretty sure my comments will not make it under that section of your site but I can make sure that this letter gets posted with every product review location that I find your products in.

    Disappointed,

    Danny Wilcox

Celestron Nexstar 11 GPS Telescope (Telescope Only)

    Editorial Review

The Celestron Nexstar 11GPS is a powerful and tidy package. The compact SCT (Schmidt Cassigrain) format makes for a light-weight unit suitable for portable or fixed operation. The accuracy of its GOTO function (which automatically points the telescope at celestial objects) is exceptional, and more importantly, repeatable. Using the GOTO functions I found I could easily place objects in the center of the included 45mm Plossl eyepiece. When doing astrophotography I was able to place objects on the CCD chip of my ST-7 almost every time.

As with every Celestron telescope I have owned over the past thirty years, the optics are superb. The OTA (Optical Tube Assembly) now consists of a carbon fiber tube, not the old aluminum tube of past years. carbon fiber reduces the weight slightly, but, more importantly, reduces the tube expansion that can take place due to temperature changes.

The drive base and electronics have been completely re-engineered from the ground up. Celestron has done away with the old sand cast housing and replaced it with a new lighter-weight design which is beefier than the previous drive base and fork arms. The new design also sports two ergonomically placed handles that make lifting the telescope and forks a breeze. On the electronics side, it is now possible to perform an upgrade of the motor controller software via the Internet, and the scope can be controlled via a laptop using any number of star charting programs. I found it was possible to simply click on an object on the star chart and the scope tracked right it.

First time setup is smooth as silk. It takes perhaps 15 to 20 minutes and works like this: The telescope downloads the needed information from the GPS satellite constellation for later setups, so all setups after that take only moments. Later setups consist of telling the telescope to perform a GPS alignment, and then centering two setup stars in the finder and eyepiece.

Once the scope is set up, there are three ways to control it: hand controller, virtual hand controller (on your laptop), or via a star charting program, also on a laptop. The end result is pretty spectacular. The rings of Saturn were clearly visible for me, as well as the Cassini division. Using high power, I was able to see the cloud bands and patterns on Jupiter, as well as surface detail on Mars. At low power, I found that deep sky objects such as the Great Nebula in Orion also made for fantastic viewing. --Dave Cole

    Pros:

    • Portable
    • Excellent GOTO accuracy
    • Great optics
    • Sturdy carbon fiber tube

    Cons:

    • A bit heavy for a single person to mount
    • Takes Some getting used to seat the telescope on the tripod
    • Hand Controller mount is not too useful during operation

    5-0 out of 5 stars great scope....however
be careful...the title says telescope only---even tho the product specifications indicates there is a tripod included, there isnt.I was even assured it came with a tripod before i placed my order....just "not the deluxe tripod".so count on having to buy a tripod unless you already have one.

Easy to set up, and great views - really high quality for the money...

4-0 out of 5 stars Celestron Nexstar 11GPS
The Celestron Nexstar 11GPS is a very good telescope for beginners and advanced users alike. It is very easy to use and has excellent optics. If you want a scope that can get you up and running and shows you galaxies, nebulas, star clusters and planets your first night out, this might be the scope for you.The downside to the scope is the price, although reasonable for what you get and the weight. This is not a light telescope at 93 pounds including the tripod.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Scopes Available
This scope is worth every penny. It's now been out for a while so all of the "bugs" in the first ones have been fixed (and there were very few issues even with the first N11 models). The scope is incredibly easy to set up with a genuine "can't miss" alignment procedure that only a moron could screw up.Once aligned (it takes no more than a minute or two) the scope will find every object you ask it to find. Not only will it find the stuff (and it finds EVERYthing) but it will put them right in the middle of the eyepiece just about every time.I can use an 8mm Meade Ultra Wide and the scope still puts everything in the middle of the eyepiece - - incredible. In addition, the tracking is fantastic. You can go to an object, view it for a while . . . go away for hours and when you come back it's still there - - right in the middle of the eyepiece.

The optics are great too.To beat this scope you would have to make a huge investment.I comparison shopped this scope and the equivalent Meade scopes and came to the conclusion that this was the hands down winner (and I was a dedicated Meade user before buying this instrument). It's one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made.

I haven't used this or any scope for astrophotography, but it's tailor made for that kind of application as well.

It's only drawback is the obvious one - - it's big, heavy and not a lot of fun to cart around. That's not a knock on the scope - -it would be an issue for any large scope of any design.Despite it's size and weight I find it comfortable to transport to dark sky sites and fairly easy to set up.If you're used to little 5" SCTs this will be a big change, but once you look through the thing you will gladly endure the minor workout that comes with lifting and moving the scope.

I highly recommend getting the JMI case that fits this scope - - another worthwhile investment. You should also consider investing in a high quality 2" star diagonal and a set of very good 2" eyepieces for the instrument as well (i.e. Meade Ultra Wides or Naglers). The big eyepieces through this scope are like going on a spacewalk. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars There are better kits available.
I have been a " DeWalt" user for years, and have been happy the entire time. That is until I purchased the 5 peice kit. It was purchased in September of '02 and I have had to replace the entire kit with the exeption of the recip saw.I doubt i will be making any more DeWalt cordless purchases. There ARE better kits at better prices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power at your convenience
Tough call deciding to buy this DeWalt kit. At the time I did not need the reciprocating saw and if another manufacturer offered similar kit with cordless planer in its place then I would have bought the competitor instead. Good thing that it was also possible to purchase a 230V charger. Some things you don't think you will need until you have it, now every item has been used except the in vehicle charger. Tools are stored indoors and when taking tools to a job I would have to assess the job and decide what to bring for the day. Space is limited by a small stationwagon, as up to recently the tools only served for a home enthusiast, now they have to work for a living. Yesterday, didn't think I needed the mains Bosch reciprocating saw so it stayed at home. Trouble was there were wooden rail sleepers to saw up on site. None of the blades from the DeWalt kit would cut deep enough. Nevermind. Used the circular saw to saw cuts top and bottom. Finish off with the recrirocating saw what the circular saw did not reach. Well I was impressed. Or course it required a few changes of battery so good job I bought one extra on top of the supplied 3 batteries. Still have not used the vechicle charger yet. Next optional extras on the shopping list would be longer blades for the reciprocating saw if there is one, smaller cases to ease loading and unloading to the car.90% of the time I am only using the drill, jig-saw, and charger. I pray that DeWalt will come up with a cordless planer before I have to choose between Bosch or DeWalt. Better hurry up DeWalt because so far you are winning because you have an in car charger. Bosch has the tools I want although not collected into a kit form yet. But in all seriousness I would only need a planer 5% of the time and anyone getting this DeWalt kit won't be disappointed. Just like a well known advert, I never leave home without DeWalt.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate tool kit..
I have been looking for an affordable but durable tool kit for a while, and this was well worth the money. The tools are made to work hard and definately help you get any job done right the first time.My first project used every single tool in the kit, and what a pleasure it is to swap tools/batteries in an instant. The round saw cut through 2x8's like butter, and the jigsaw made precision cuts for all of my trim work. The Drill is the best tool in the kit, because of the versatility in speed settings and high RPM which allowed me to drill right into concrete over and over again.
I highly recommend this kit to anyone looking for a great all-in-one package, and rest asure this kit will last for years... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The 50" DLP projection TV displays a widescreen viewing area that is elegantly framed in an ultra-light, thin-bezel cabinet. Weighing about 80 pounds and only17.6 inches deep, it fits almost anywhere. You will experience perfect vision: Samsung’s DLP projection TV delivers unmatched brightness, contrast levels, and color accuracy, plus full digital convergence and a host of top-notch features. Its sleek design and lightweight construction also make this monitor possibly the most attractive and versatile TV your home has ever seen.

    HDTV with DLP technology
Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology is found in leading digital cinemas the world over. The heart of DLP technology is a micro-display panel no larger than a postage stamp, which integrates 921,600 microscopic mirrors to deliver eye-popping, high-definition detail, color, and clarity. Samsung applies the magic of DLP technology to your home theater via its patented, compact optical engine that replaces the large, heavy picture tubes found in direct-view sets. Best of all, Samsung DLP projection TVs are lighter, more affordable, and use far less power than plasma TVs. Now you can enjoy the spine-tingling thrills of digital television in a sleek, tabletop design that’s significantly smaller, lighter, and brighter than a conventional projection TV. Samsung’s advanced convergence technologies also make DLP projection TVs compatible with your HDTV tuner, PC, DVD, game console, VCR, camcorder, digital camera, and much more.

    Samsung optical engine
Samsung’s patented optical engine ensures maximum brightness, flicker-free video, detailed text, and still images, and a full 160-degree viewing angle. DLP micro-display technology and Samsung’s proprietary Bent Light Lens System give you a big-screen TV without the big-screen hassle. Its ultra-slim, ultra-lightweight design lets you put it virtually anywhere. And its optical engine is durable, long-lasting, and never needs calibrating.

    Digital perfection
DLP technology is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. The surface of the DLP panel is covered with almost a million micro-mirrors (1280 x 720) that act as pixels. This incredibly high pixel count creates a striking, digital image with seamless resolution, amazing detail, and brilliant, lifelike colors. And because the pixels are less than one micron apart, you won’t notice the "screen door" effect apparent with other TVs.

    Ultra-smooth action
Samsung’s DLP micro-mirrors can switch on and off over 5,000 times a second--that’s up to 10 times faster than other micro-displays. This allows DLP Projection TV to smoothly and accurately display fast-switching content like HDTV and DVD.

    Brighter and clearer
At 400 cd/m2, DLP outshines other micro-display technologies for a bright, clear picture, with incredible contrast and color accuracy. Its unique optical engine preserves the intensity of the original image with vibrant colors and rich, deep blacks. Its high, 1000:1 contrast ratio makes for ideal color separation and crisp, detailed images. That’s why Samsung's DLP projection TV is perfect for any source material that demands minute detail, such as HDTV, computer images, and DVDs.

    Consistent screen image
The DLP projection TV is much more durable than competing technologies because the display doesn’t physically age or deteriorate. Its ultra-high-pressure lamp delivers consistent light output and picture quality throughout its long lifespan.

Cinema progressive scan and 3:2 pulldown
The cinema progressive scan enhancement automatically upconverts all nondigital signals to a smooth, clear 720 lines of progressive scan. The 3:2 pulldown feature is a must for any movie enthusiast. It analyzes each frame of video, removing unclear frames that were added during the transfer from film to video. These added frames cause blurring, stuttering, and other motion artifacts, especially during fast-action sequences. 3:2 pulldown eliminates them and gives your DVDs a look and feel that’s much closer to film. Cinema progressive scan with 3:2 pulldown is powered by Faroudja’s patented DCDi video processing on Samsung DLP projection TVs.

    1280 x 720 progressive display quality
Samsung delivers flicker-free, static images, thanks to its all-format conversion system. Progressive scan is a must for rock-steady text, still images, and smooth action sequences.

    Wide viewing angle
Left side, right side, or upside-down--whatever your location, Samsung DLP projection TVs allow you to see any display clearly, thanks to its 160-degree-wide viewing angle. Unlike traditional projection TVs, the image doesn’t get darker as you move away from the center.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't get one of these
I was so excited to get my Samsung HLN507W 50" DLP and the Samsung DVD-HD841. Now that I have had them for a week, I could not be more disappointed. I will start with the good things. The picture. The picture is incredible. I am using the DVI video and optical audio interface for the DVD player and component video/optical audio for the HD Digital Cable. Both look stunning. I do get surround sound from the DVD player with the optical cable. So much for the good stuff.

The audio and picture are not in sync on most of the regular cable channels when listening to the TV speakers. The HD channels seem to be OK. Most of the time. I called Samsung the first day I had the TV and they told me it was a known problem with this model and when can they send someone out to fix it. The local repair guy said the "lip sync kit" (on backorder) has not corrected the problem on other units he has worked on. Even the DVD audio is not quite in sync on the TV speakers.

It was very difficult to get the DVD - DVI picture on the screen. You have to connect the component cables and go through the menu to change to the DVD output, and then complete the process on the DVI output. That took a while to figure out.

The DVD player freezes, then continues, freezes, then continues, freezes, then continues, freezes, then continues, many times on DVD's that play fine on my older players. It is going back tomorrow.

I guess they haven't quite figured out all this new technology. I really hope someone out there is having better luck than me.

Now I am also having a horizontal hold problem. After about 10 minutes of warm up time the picture stops flipping.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Humming?
We've had our TV for about a week now and although it looks great and we love it, I'm extremely annoyed by the humming sound it makes.Has anyone else experienced this problem?

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
Typical of Samsung products, the TV has poor build quality. The image looks washed out, and the TV itself feels cheaply made.People who claim to love it probably work for the company.I'd go with a better brand like Sony or Panasonic. ... Read more
