Editorial Review

Designed with the same easy-to-use controls as Canon's PowerShot A5 and A5Zoom, the PowerShot A50 remains portable and easy to operate, but its added features provide better image quality and more speed and functionality than its predecessors.

The 1.31-megapixel CCD (charge-coupled device) and Hardware Image Processing help produce sharper images and increase the shooting speed. Features such as Night Shooting mode, Slow Shutter mode, white balance control, and exposure compensation help eliminate color irregularities and allow for a wide variety of shots. This camera also offers a 28 to 70mm-equivalent zoom lens with both wide-angle and telephoto settings.

The PowerShot A50 is Canon's first digital camera to support new industry standards for image storage and printing. Its DCF (design rule for camera filing system) format and DPOF (digital print order format) make it simple to print and transfer images between the camera and other peripherals. The PowerShot A50 comes with a rechargeable battery, power adapter, and an integrated set of Mac- and PC-compatible software; however, you have to buy the battery charger separately. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AS PORTABLE AS IT GETS
Pros: pocket sized, sturdy aluminum clad body, largest optical zoom in the Canon Elph-based series
Cons: eats alkaline batteries, need to purchase the power pack and extra battery; better outdoors than indoors
Recommended: Yes

This digital camera fits easily into a shirt pocket, so it's as portable as it gets, and your 'best friend' on vacation. An important feature that is too often overlooked is the fact that it is aluminum clad, so dropping it won't easily result in the heartache of a broken camera that costs hundreds to be replaced immediately or a costly repair that will deprive the owner of its use for an extended period.

It's outdoor shots are excellent; its 2.5X OPTICAL zoom is the largest presently available in the Canon Elph-based repertoire of digicams; its 1.3 Megapixel resolution gives 35mm equivalent 4"x6" prints on either H-P or Epson photo printers.

The drawbacks often reported with shots taken using the internal flash are not critical; although the power of the flash is effectively limited to a range of within 10 feet, the A-50 has multiple modes that deal well with red eye reduction, fill flash, or no flash at all, to the extent of being the virtual match for any digicam list priced under "$1,000". Its controls are easy to master; its playback mode extends to a "slide show" in the LCD (which is larger than the average digicam's at 2 full inches diagonal) or on TV. The camera DOES eat batteries, so TWO batteries and the optional power pack (now readily available for under $80 with one battery, second battery about $25) is a MUST. If you upgrade to higher resolution Canon "Elph-based" digicams, you can use this battery and charger. These lithium batteries will last for up to 100 shots using the LCD as a preview and thus are good for a full day of shooting. The second battery permits full operation while the first battery is charging.

The A-50 will handle most sizes (under 200 MB) of Compact Flash Type I, and puts 161 photos on a 48 MB card. That's enough for a week's worth of vacation shots. (...)It is the BEST optical zoom 1.3 Megapixel camera on the market for ease of use, portability and versatility. Another nice feature, not found in all cameras, is a "raw mode" that permits uncompressed photos. Its JPEG compression on "best mode" does little to adversely affect the photographs, and there are a host of other features that will appeal to the more advanced photographers.

All in all, the A-50 was well designed and a good value for the money. Of course, at this time, with the advent of 3.3 Megapixel cameras, and the S-100 Digital Elph at 2.1 Megapixel with a 2X optical zoom, the A-50, at 1.3MP and its serial interface can be considered obsolete, but, at its current price, it's my choice as a gift for my preteen daughter. It's just right without spending more than necessary for someone who can use the zoom lens effectively, adapt the camera to slide shows and does not need to print anything larger than 5" X 7" photos on a color inkjet.......and if she drops this sturdy little aluminum 'tank' of a camera, I won't be out a fortune for replacement or repair!

5-0 out of 5 stars Canon A50 Excellent Camera, Poor support from Canon.
I have been waiting a long time to buy a really good digitalcamera that I can afford. I got the A50 for $399.00 plus I got a 16meg compactflash card as a bonus in addition to the 8meg card. I was surprised by the excellent pictures I get with the Canon A50. Compares to 35mm SLR cameras. Also it is very easy to setup and use. I was disappointed in the lack of support from Canon. I asked where I can find accessories online, they told me to call an 800 number and order from them. The dk110 power supply kit does not exist and I am beginning to wonder if it ever will. I have looked around for the 2cr5 battery and found a range in price from $6.95 all the way up to $19.95. So shop around. The dumb outfit that wanted $6.95 also wanted $13.95 for shipping. Average price is $9.95. Meanwhile, I won't use the LCD very much. Camera gets 5 Stars for quality, Canon gets 1 star for lack of support. I'd still recommend this camera to all inspite of Canon's poor support.

4-0 out of 5 stars great camera, great software
I love the camera. It's great for a snapshot camera and has some useful manual functions (flash off, exposure compensation, slow shutter).Another great feature is the Mac software that comes with it-- TimeTunnel. This isawesome. You plug in the camera (or in my case, put the CompactFlash cardinto a PCMCIA adapter and into the slot in my PowerBook) and upload thephotos into this easy-to-use and very well designed program. You can zoomthrough thumbnails of all of your photos, arranged on a spiral thing whichclasses them by date. When you click on a thumbnail, you get all the infoabout it (date, shutter speed, aperture, file size, etc) and when youdouble click it opens the full size image. You can easily "send"any image to another program, such as the included Adobe PhotoDeluxe, orbetter yet, Photoshop.

I'm very happy with the camera, and the onlyreason it doesn't get a 5 star rating from me is that the battery chargerand replacement rechargable batteries are on worldwide backorder and havebeen for months. This is very irresponsible of Canon and is costing me afortune in batteries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Own three SimpleTech 256 and a SimpleTech 512 CF cards
I've taken over 24,000 pixs with these on a Nikon CoolPix 5000 and only once did the 512 give me a fright. But in the end, the pixs were there. It happened during file transfer from the card to a PowerMac laptop. It could've been my fault; a little careless last weekend.

Speed of writing on SimpleTech cards is respectable; price is right though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have used this card for about 6 months and never had any problems. I used it in a Canon G5 camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with Muvo2
I purchased this card and the Sandisk 512 CF.Simpletech wouldn't format in the Muvo2.The Sandisk worked like a charm.Previous experience had this card fail in a week.I should have known better.I have never had a problem with Sandisk, but have been bitten twice with SimpleTech. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON.COM
Better cards are available from other retailers - just check epinions.com - you will find a whole bunch for $19 or less. Also they deliver, while Amazon does not.The item has label "usually ships in 24 hours", but I have waited 5 (five !) days, and still it was not shipped. Do not buy this card, and check other place than Amazon. The Amazon stinks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic card - unbeatable price
I bought this SimpleTech card in early 2003 and have had great results with it.I have shot over 34,000 pictures on it using my Canon PowerShot G3.I use it extensively with my Dell X5 PDA.For the last month, I have been using it in my new Nikon D70 (over 5000 pictures so far from that).I originally paid about $60 for this card.

The card has never failed me.I have given it extreme use.I also have a 256 MB Sandisk card (it failed me once, and I had it replaced under warranty) and a 256 MB Viking card.I had read a review that the Viking card may not be compatible with the G3, so I never used it in that camera.I used the Viking card only in my Canon Powershot S400.However I did use all three cards in my PDA and in the S400.I have used the SimpleTech and the Sandisk both in my D70, as well as a new Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB card.

By comparison, the Sandisk 256 MB card was definitely the slowest when performing the same tasks. It could not keep up with mp3 playback on my PDA.It has noticibly slower write times for photos on my cameras, especially the G3. The SimpleTech and the Viking cards perform about the same as each other.Neither has noticeable slowness on my PDA.Photo write times on the G3 were acceptable with this SimpleTech card.It really did not cause a delay in shooting dut to waiting for pictures to write to the card.

Interestingly, on the D70, this SimpleTech card still keeps up well. The D70 has an advanced buffering system that can hold several (about 12 at normal quality full resolution) images while writing them to the card. This is so much buffer that rarely so I have the need to exceed this many shots in one burst. Thus, when I am using the SimpleTech card, it really does NOT slow down my shooting at all.

By comparison, I do notice that the D70 finishes writing pictures to my ULTRA II card sooner, especially after a burst of several frames.(based on the blinking light that indicates CF card activity)I really never have the need to shoot a continuous burst of frames all the way to a full 256 MB card.

My conclusion is that this 256 MB SimpleTech card is just about the best way to go for CF memory currently. It will cost you less to buy 4 of these (1 GB) than to buy one 1 GB Ultra II card. And then, if you have one of these fail, you will not be out of memory at a crucial time - because you have 3 other cards to use.And you would be able to get a replacement for the failed card later at your convenience.

I highly recommend using multiple smaller cards over single larger cards.256 MB is my size of choice, and this is my choice among inexpensive 256 MB cards. At the current price (around $20 at the writing of this review) you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable and fast
I have been using this 256MB card for an year now on two of my Canon digital camera and a Casio PDA. It has always been reliable and there is no diminishing in storage capacity. Read and write are slightly faster than my San disk 256MB. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Has a mind of its own
I'm glad most people are happy with their card because I'm having a terrible time with mine.I just came back from a short trip and was transferring 21 pictures that I took to my computer.By the 4th picture, things came to a halt, it might have been my computer. When I tried again, the camera gave me the "No image" message.Yes, the card was blank, all 21 pictures in the camera simply vanished before my eyes while I was transferring them to my computer. This is not the first time.It did do a few little funny things here and there before.Obviously I missed the crucial sign of a greater potential trouble back then. This memory card has compeletely made me paranoid about taking pictures with a digital camera. It's one of those things that money refund won't replace what's been lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I've owned it for a year and it works fine.No issues with loss of storange or read/write speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid reliable product at a great value
I purchased the 128 MB Simpletech CompactFlash Card about seven months ago.My digital camera came with a 16MB card, but I wanted more memory and this was great. So far, it has been very reliable in holding pictures upto the full capacity.I read that other CompactFlash Cards can sometimes stop functioning after a couple months or not live upto the "promised" capacity. Not true with this card.I take quite a few pictures and therefore have used the card to its full capacity many times and then erased pictures from it using the camera.I didn't have to format the card and it's still functioning like a new one.I have not had a single problem with it and I am very happy with this product. The price was reasonable as well.I highly recommend this card to anyone looking for a CompactFlash Card. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about.Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SimpleTech 64MB Compact Flash Card, like most 64MB cards, will store on average 71 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 53 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,32 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 25 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 20 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simpletech still has never failed me
Being that I only had the 8 MB that came stock with my camera the switch to the Simpletech 64MB cf card was a huge difference.I have always been happy with Simpletech products. My last purchase of the 64MB CF Card re-assured my faith in ST.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sinch to use!
This product is great. I was up and running in minutes.
I bought it because my Digital Camera refused to communicate with my pc. I just followed the included instructions and within minutes all of my pictures were downloaded.

2-0 out of 5 stars A poor implementation of Plug N' Play
This device should configure a lot easier than it does.I'm a programmer with many years of experience configuring hardware.I found this one annoying to set up.

You may have to download new drivers for this device from the simpletech website.Once you get the correct version of the drivers, and install it following the instructions EXACTLY (the device cannot be plugged in while loading the software) it eventually works ok.

Note that there are two DIFFERENT part numbers for this device. 90000-40388-001 and 90000-40388-002.The 001 version does not support some platforms that the 002 version does.I recieved the 001 and have had no end of difficulty with it.

If I had it to do over again, I would spend a bit more, and get a device from another company that supported more than two media types.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Storage Device!
Primarily I bought this item 'cause I needed to transfer the pictures from my digital Olympus D-340R camera to my notebook. My notebook doesn't have a serial port, which is the one used to transfer the pictures, and I needed a fast, reliable, easy to use and non-battery device. And I found this excellent device, although you'll think that its plastic package is to delicate.

I recommend you to buy this excellent device, but be aware that if you are going to use it on a Windows 98 based PC, you should download the drivers for Windows 98...It's an ideal plug and play device for Windows XP!! ... Read more
