Apple eMac Desktop 17" M8892LL/A (800-MHz PowerPC G4, 256 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive) Average Customer Review: Personal Computers US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Apple's all-in-one eMac, originally designed for the education market, is now available to everyone. The most affordable G4-based computer series ever, the eMac now includes Apple's SuperDrive, which allows you to burn both recordable DVDs and CDs, along with a suite of Apple software that will allow your digital creativity to flow from the moment you plug in the computer. The new SuperDrive-equipped eMac model is the industry's lowest-cost way to author and burn custom DVDs that play in most consumer DVD players. Apple's award-winning iMovie and iDVD applications come pre-installed on the new eMac, enabling users to edit their video and create and burn their own custom DVDs without buying additional software. The popular eMac features a stunning 17-inch flat CRT display in a remarkably compact design. Its shape lets you conserve desk space--the entire computer is smaller than most 17-inch displays, yet it includes not only the display, but also an integrated high-performance stereo audio system with a 16-watt digital amplifier, as well as the SuperDrive. In fact, it's actually less deep (by about 8 mm) than the original groundbreaking 15-inch iMac. It also features 256 MB of system memory, a 60 GB hard drive, and an nVidia GeForce2 MX graphics processor for stunning graphics display. The eMac's 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor uses Velocity Engine technology, which makes multimedia tasks like CD burning and digital video editing faster and easier. In addition, it includes Apple's industry-leading suite of digital lifestyle applications. That includes iPhoto for managing and sharing digital photographs, iMovie for creating digital movies, and iTunes for creating a digital music library, as well as iDVD. With five USB ports and two high-speed FireWire ports, the eMac offers easy plug-and-play connections to popular peripherals such as digital video camcorders, digital still cameras, printers, and scanners. A built-in 56K modem means you won't need any additional hardware to connect to the Internet. In addition, the eMac comes with a built-in Ethernet connection, which allows it to join your home, office, or school network. An AirPort slot makes it easy to connect the eMac to a wireless network with the addition of an AirPort card. ... Read more Reviews (6)
I've always been a supporter of the Mac, but haven't used them most of my life. At my house, my parents use Wintel boxes with Windows XP Pro installed. While this is M$'s best operating system yet, it doesn't come anywhere close to Mac OSX. If you use Windows, you know that it crashes way too often. Mac OSX will never crash on you, mainly because its based on Unix. So all you Unix, Linux and Windows users, your search for rock solid stability is o.v.e.r. The eMac comes with a treasure trove of software preinstalled on it. Applications like iTunes, iMovie, iDVD (if you get the Superdrive version of eMac) and iPhoto are perfect for managing your digital lifestyle. I use iTunes all the time to easily create and burn CD's for everyone in my family! But music and movies isn't all the Mac is good for, at my school I am the layout editor for our newspaper. Windows just didn't cut it for creating the paper, but this Mac is godsend. While I am currently looking into buying M$ Office X, I use Appleworks to create everything. Appleworks seemlessly can open Word documents. In fact, Macs coexist and speak to Windows boxes better than most Windows do themselves! The eMac was originally created for schools and education. In part, the same goes for me. Being a student, I find the eMac can easily do any task. It includes the World Book Encyclopedia (an excellent refernce and info source) installed on it. Running many programs at the same time is a breeze. One thing I would suggest is that you purchase some extra RAM for this computer. 256k is kinda low, I would recommend 512 MB's. While some people may shun Apple's good looks and slick designs, don't be fooled, they aren't all fluff and no substance. The built in sound system is excellent, light years ahead of Wintel built in "sound systems". The graphics are very sharp, pretty good for games. Bottom line: This computer is great for everyone, now stop reading and go buy it!
A year ago, I gave in to pressure from friends/PC owners who told me I could get a faster, cheaper computer which ran all my software from work.It was definitely cheaper, but after a year of poor performance, regular system crashes, and difficulty performing the most basic tasks (like burning a CD or installing software), I moved back to Mac. I'd never tell anyone not to get a PC, but I would recommend this Mac if it's important to you to own a reasonably-priced, all-in-one setup that burns CDs and DVDs, has tons of style, and works well on a regular basis. p.s.I'm not really a 1 year old.well, maybe in terms of maturity... ... Canon PowerShot G34MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $699.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Few digital camera lines have been as successfully branded as Canon's Powershot. And the best known in that line was the powerful and fun to use G2. Now, Canon's following it up with their G3, which has the same four megapixels of resolution but now offers an improved 4X optical zoom and other updated features. With a revamped body, the G3 feels a bit more comfortable in the hands. A mid-sized camera, you'll notice it hanging around your neck, but its 14.5 ounce frame won't weigh you down terribly. With a high-speed CompactFlash card, the G3 can take video clips of up to three minutes complete with sound. You'll want to consider an upgrade to one of those cards, as the G3 ships with only a 32 MB standard CF card--not bad for bundled memory, but you'll be happier with more storage room. Images taken at the highest resolution quickly filled up the 32 MB card, but were highly detailed as well as bright with realistic colors. The G3 features the same large, bright 1.8-inch LCD as its predecessor, making it easy to frame your shot in anything except direct sunlight. Like earlier G models, the LCD flips out and can be rotated around completely, letting you view it from any angle. This works well with the G3's two options for self-timing, 2 and 10 seconds, so you can see what you're doing from the target viewpoint. And the G3's above-industry-standard 4x optical zoom lets you get in closer than the G2's 3x zoom as well. Compatible with Canon's Direct Print feature, you can output images from the G3 directly to any of Canon's Direct Print line of printers. The G3 is a great choice for a 4 megapixel, 4x optical zoom camera with a wealth of features. --J. Curtis Pros:

Canon PowerShot S200 2MP Digital ELPH Camera w/2x Optical Zoom Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $379.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Inch for inch and ounce for ounce, Canon's PowerShot S200 Digital Elphpacks more power into less space than virtually any other digital camera, stuffing a feature-packed, 2-megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom into adiminutive brushed-metal case that slips easily into a purse or pocket. Resolution Optics More Features A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, theseclips can last from 2 to 60 seconds. The limited length and resolution of theseclips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it'sperfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to afriend or relative. In addition, you can add up to 60 seconds of audio to eachstill picture you take. Power Storage and Transfer Printing Size Contents and Recommended Accessories Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we stronglyrecommend the addition of a larger memory card (a 128 MB card holds around 200images), a spare NB-1L battery, and a compact carrying case (to protect thebrushed-metal finish and keep pocket lint out of the viewfinder). --ShaneBurnett Pros:

Apple 10 GB iPod (M8737LL/A, July 2002 Version) Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Apple has revamped the now-classic iPod with several exceptional new features. The 10 GB model still packs 2,000 songs and a 10-hour battery life into a stunning 6.5-ounce package, but Apple ups the ante with new iTunes 3 software; a redesigned, touch-sensitive scroll wheel; red-hot FireWire digital file transfers; a wired remote control; and an overhauled calendar/scheduler. The iPods setup and interface are still the same: just plug it into your Mac and all your iTunes songs and playlists are automatically downloaded into iPod at blazing FireWire speed--typically 15 seconds or less. Dont forget that the player also doubles as a FireWire drive for applications and other files. This new model also comes with a FireWire port cover to protect the player from dirt and other gunk. In addition to its 10 GB hard drive, iPod has a 32 MB memory cache. The cache is made of solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts, so it's not affected by movement of the device. Skip protection on the iPod works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache. The iPod has a large, high-quality LCD (liquid crystal display) for viewing up to six lines of text. And the LCD features an LED (light-emitting diode) backlight for clear visibility in low-light situations--indoors or outdoors. Pocket-size and just 6.5 ounces, it weighs appreciably less than the stack of CDs it can store music from. Featuring Apple's new iTunes 3 software, the iPod can synchronize with newly added music files and playlists. Simply plug the iPod back into your Mac and the changes are automatically updated in seconds. And with iTunes 3, you can rip MP3s, create playlists, and burn custom CDs all from one simple interface. And thanks to a cool new partnership with audible.com, you can now download audiobooks to the iPod. You can also download your calendar and schedule to the iPod from applications like Entourage, Palm Desktop, and Mac OS X Address Book. Plus, the iPod now has a built-in digital clock. The iPod's rechargeable lithium-polymer battery is charged using the FireWire cable when connected to your Mac. You can also recharge the iPod using the included FireWire cable and AC adapter when you're on the go. The iPod supports MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR (variable bit rate), WAV, and AIFF files, and is firmware upgradable. To use the iPod with your Mac, you'll need a FireWire port and you must be running either Mac OS 9.2.1 (or later) or Mac OS X 10.1 (or later). The unit comes with a wired remote control, revamped earbud-style headphones, a FireWire cable, power adapter, CD-ROM with iTunes 3, and a carrying case with belt clip. It's backed by a 90-day limited warranty. ... Read more Features Reviews (25)
I have had the ipod for eight months now, and it is still working perfectly well, showning just how durable it is (i have put it through quite a bit). Also, the controls are incredibly easy to learn and understand, even for the technically inept. another thing that I really like about the ipod, other than the sheer quantity of music that it holds, is the size of the screen, as well as the backlight, which is very bright. The large screen makes it wonderfully easy to see all of the information about the song. The final thing that I really love about the ipod is the fact that you canupgrade the software that it uses whenever apple comes out with a new version of the software.
No, it's not a line from Star Trek. Rather, it's the first thing you'll need to do when you unpack your new iPod: throw away the supplied headphones and buy a decent pair. Although Apple says the 'New iPod headphones are smaller in size, with new Neodymium transducer magnets for enhanced bass response, smoother midrange transitions, and accurate high-end reproduction' I personally found them uncomfortable to wear, and, more to the point, poor in sound quality. Good headphones will add immensely to your satisfaction as an iPod owner. Be prepared to buy them! On the plus side, you'll get the hang of using an iPod in about 5 minutes. (It really is possible to use it with just one hand.) And if you have a Mac-iTunes-iPod system set-up, updating your digital music collection is a breeze. (Windows users now have the same ease of use, apparently.) The iPod had a battery life problem which has now been solved, although (I haven't actually timed mine) I doubt you'll get 10 hours playback from a single charge, as claimed. What about the sound? Hardly a minor issue for a music player, after all. Apple's copywriters (a group not, on the whole, given to understatement) claim that '...(the iPod's) high-output (60-mW) amplifier provides CD-quality sound with a wide dynamic range. The result? Deep, pulse-pounding bass and sharp, crystal-clear highs.' Ummmmm...yes and no. The iPod provides a good, balanced sound for most types of music, with clear (not too trebly) highs. Light jazz and acoustic guitar sound pretty good. However, its bass does lack punch to some extent. (The built-in equaliser doesn't really help.) A Sony Minidisc player (or, if you want to step back into the Jurassic analog era, even a Sony Walkman) provides much punchier, crisper sound, but then again, you don't get to carry 2,000 songs with you. Pros: Very ease to use; reliable. Clean interface. Cons: Supplied headphones are a waste of space. Wimpy bass; struggles with some genres of music. Battery not user-replaceable.
