    Editorial Review

A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys is a romantic, heartfelt, and intimate live performance recorded in Germany in 1998.An introduction with members Kevin Richardson and Howie Doroughexplains that the Boys have always wanted to perform for their fans andthemselves in an acoustic concert. Much like the well-known MTVUnplugged series, the Backstreet Boys perform with a full orchestraand a small choir for background vocals. There is no choreography, theydo mostly ballads and mid-tempo songs, and most of the time theycasually sit on bar stools. The group is exposed musically, providingthe opportunity to show their fans and their critics that theBackstreet Boys "really do have talent."

Starting with "Who Do You Love," "As Long as You Love Me," and "10,000 Promises," there can be no mistaking that the Backstreet Boys do indeedhave real musical talent. The solo section begins with Brian Littrellsinging "That's What She Said/Where Can We Go from Here?" andaccompanying himself on guitar, followed by A.J. McLean doing a soulful"Lay Down Beside Me." Nick Carter performs "I Need You Tonight" andHowie shines on "My Heart Stays with You." Kevin closes the solosection with a beautiful, untitled piano instrumental. Finally, theboys return to the stage for "Like a Child," the up-tempo "All I Haveto Give," a medley of "If I Don't Have You/I'll Never Break YourHeart," "Quit Playing Games with My Heart," and a new arrangement of"Let's Have a Party." The stylish video versions of "All I Have toGive" and "I'll Never Break Your Heart" are also included to completethis 70-minute "night out." --Larry Clark ... Read more

This is a Backstreet Boys concert the way you dreamed it could be, without the audience or music drowning out those magnificant voices. If you can only have one video, choose this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool
I expected an official book to be a lenghty chapter book- but this had more information than it looked! plus cool colorful pics on each page. Of course this book covers their lives up to their debut album in '98, so of course its not exactly up-to-date anymore, but its cool to have. It has a section about each member that has some interesting info and old baby pics! Theres a section about their most embarrasing moments, which is always cool, and funny to hear about! Plus much more!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can dance!
If you cannot dance at all, this video will teach you how to at least hold your own on the dance floor.I had always avoided dancing at all costs.Up until recently, I would only go to bars that didn't have dance floors.I would even make excuses to my girlfriend to get out of dancing when we'd go out.

I finally decided to do something about it after a friend made fun of me recently.I've asked family members and friends to teach me how to dance, but nobody was able to teach me the fundamental rule that this video does: All you do is move your feet to the beat, and everything else will follow.I had always tried too hard to move my upper body to the beat. That's not the idea at all!

Some of the video was not helpful.Nobody does the forward-and-back type dancing. Some of the side-to-side stuff was not too useful, but the basic 'step left-step right', to the beat, was quite helpful indeed.Get that basic step down and you'll find yourself doing your own variations of it on the dance floor.Skip the double step...you probably won't even find room for that in most clubs.

If you can look past the occasional corniness of the video, you can really pick up some useful tips and can learn to dance in minutes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Getting you Started
I was delighted with the tape.It is the only "free-style" dancing instruction tape I've seen. This tape explained the steps very clearly and I think the dancers looked great. You can adapt the steps and arm movements to reflect your style.

Maybe it's too basic for an experienced dancer, but for me, who would rather sit a dance out than to risk being ridiculed, it was exactly what I needed. We don't have NYC style dance clubs so most of the dancing is at weddings or parties.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
The disco dancing they show is so outdated even for the early 90s.It is the worst tape I have ever bought.I thought they looked like fools flaring their arms about while two stepping! Definitely not worth the money! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I can sing better than this CD - and thats not saying much
This CD is awful. The entire disk is arranged very poorly. I'm not sure where the "10 Lessons" in the title came from. I think there are a total of about 3 songs among the 60+ "lessons" on the entire CD - the rest are brief vocal exercizes, alternately sung by a cheesy, wannabe-the-lead-in-Cats male voice and a female voice that is downright painful to listen to at times. Some last for about 10 seconds. There is absolutley no direction or consistency as to how its presented. The accompanying book is less than worthless.

Do not waste your money! Stick to singing in the shower or at least accompanying the radio in your car.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is good
You need a few lessons before you will get a lot out of it, but it is good. ... Read more

Let's discuss something no one wants to talk about: ear and nose hair. It's simply a reality of life that, as we age, hair in these places can become longer and thicker. Despite the fact that no one wants to talk about it, unsightly hair doesn't go unnoticed; each of us can remember the dentist we had as a child, whose nose hair we'd gaze at as our teeth were worked on. Conair's cordless nose and ear hair trimmer can help you avoid becoming like that dentist. Engineered to safely cut hair in nostrils and ears, this trimmer's sheathed stainless-steel blades eliminate the painful risk of using scissors. Simply insert the tip of the trimmer and let it do its thang. Then we'll never have to discuss this topic again, will we? Two-year warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Read more

Yamaha PSR260AD 61-Note Touch-Sensitive Portable Electronic Keyboard with AC Adapter
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $189.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

If you are looking to buy a first keyboard at a reasonable price, try the Yamaha PSR260AD on for size. It's uncomplicated and fun to play, and it might just help you develop music skills. The PSR260AD has 100 voices ranging from pianos to trumpets to drums. One hundred accompaniments, from twistto fusion, can be mixed with the voices. As a MIDI-compatible keyboard, the PSR260AD can connect to a sequencer or computer via MIDI cables (sold separately), both of which can record musical performances from thekeyboard and then play them back using the instrument voices on the PSR260AD.After a while, though, 100 voices will probably seem limiting to most users.

The PSR260AD is not a General MIDI keyboard, which means that if you connect it to a computer, General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet) will not sound correct--the instrumentation will be wrong.

One feature on the PSR260AD that most people (especially children and teenagers) will enjoy is the DJ. Pressing the button shaped like a vinyl record resets the keyboard for playing special DJ songs and voices. There are orchestra hits, samples of real voices singing phrases such as "one more time" and "Get up!" and a variety of scratches. There is even a DJ game programmed into the keyboard that helps users develop rhythm skills. One hundred other songs of various styles are also included that are fun to play and are used in the three lessons offered by the PSR260AD.

The lessons can all be done with left hand alone, right hand alone, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student presses any note in the proper time. During the waiting lesson, the PSR260AD holds theaccompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. And in the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time. An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson. A staff display and keyboard displayhelp the student identify the correct keys, while animated clapping hands help the student visualize the rhythm. A dictionary function shows the different chord types on the display staff. These educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student may pick up rudimentary skills that will help in the further study of music.

The PSR260AD is an easy keyboard to use, even for a small child. It is lightweight (11.7 lbs.) even though it has built-in speakers. The buttons are all colorful and clearly marked, and all of the accompaniments, voices, and song styles are printed right on the keyboard. Most of the functionality is so intuitive and simple, you may never need to take the manual out of the shrink-wrap!

The PSR260AD is a fun keyboard to play, but it is mostly a learning tool and creative toy. It will provide many hours of entertainment for younger users, and it may very well inspire them to study music. --Chris Fresolone

    • Easy to use
    • Lightweight
    • Lots of fun for younger users

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent decision!
Buying this keyboard is an excelent decision. I have one who uses my little son for practicing his keyboard lessons. Considering all the features this keyboard includes, I am sure he could continue using it during several years as his musical habilities increases. Additionally you should consider buying a keyboard stand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy
It took me months to pick out this keyboard and I am very happy with the choice.I have had other keyboards and actually gave them away because I was so unhappy with the sound quality...they just weren't "right".As hard as I would try to "get used to" them, it was impossible and actually had an irritating effect on me.This keyboard is wonderful - the sounds of the instruments are beautiful and correct.

If you are just learning, the lessons are great. The song book they send you is written for instruction also - with a little practice you will be on your way.

4-0 out of 5 stars No built-in sequencer
Just a note after I received this keyboard from Amazon - despite what the Amazon page says, this keyboard does not have a built-in sequencer to record your own songs. For that you'll have to pay a bit extra and get the PSR280 61-Note keyboard.

Otherwise, the keyboards seems solid, the majority of the sounds are realistic and the speakers sound great. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Macmillan's Digital CD Recording Studio II attempts, in many ways, to beeverything to everyone. Been meaning to put all of those LPs onto CD once andfor all? How about converting those cassettes (or, gasp--eight tracks!) to thedigital realm? Maybe you're not interested in buying an extra player for yourthousands of megabytes of MP3 files. In any case, Digital CD Recording Studio IIcan manage your musical assets efficiently.

You'll be working in a familiar three-pane environment: file structure at left, file contents in the center, and options and selections at right. The toolbarwill give you direct access to everything from creating a new play list, torecording from an analog audio source, to converting MP3 data, to processingrecordings.

Begin with your average playlist. The summary box keeps you up to speed on totalnet playing time versus total playing time with silent, between-song gaps, plusavailable CD-R space and time.

For those who are concerned with improving the quality of your recordings (and, who isn't, when we're talking about upgrading the analog to the digital?), youwon't want to miss the PlayInfo panel, which measures instantaneous volume peaksin decibels. The Producer panel is another cool feature that sports a range ofprocessing options. Other noteworthy features include:

    • Declicking and Dehissing functions, which let you clean up recordings. Youcan adjust easily the sensitivity to small noise pulses and the reduction ratefor hissing that's caused by contact, such as the needle on the record.
    • A full-service equalizer, which allows you to adjust the frequency ofindividual bands. You'll have also a number of equalizer presets at yourfingertips, which offer standard equalization options, such as Flat, Bass Cut,and Treble Boost.
    • Fade In/Fade Out options, which let you get an even intro or closing to yourrecording, adjusting from 20 milliseconds to 20 seconds.
    • Also, you'll be able to preview your handiwork on the Preview panel. Evenbetter, if your machine has a little power behind it, you can make adjustmentswhile playing, which allows a truly on-the-fly adjustable environment.

In order to use other devices along with Digital CD Recording Studio II, you'llneed to update the appropriate sound card settings and get the right hardware, which usually consists of a stereo patch cable, or "Y" cable. Once you're setup, you'll be able to record from this source through the software, unpack thelarge recording file into individual tracks, clean up your recording, andproduce your CD--all with relative ease.

Recording through this package allows you to record in stereo or mono, and youcan choose a range of sampling (from 11.025 kHz to 44.1 kHz). You also canrecord radio programs at any time, whether you're present or not--the TimerRecording function does this with reliability.

Digital CD Recording Studio II also handles the more contemporary formats of CDand MP3 with relative proficiency. After you wade through numerous warnings oncopyright infringement, you'll find yourself able to select easily any of theWAV files on your average audio CD for recording. Likewise with MP3: you'll beable to convert the MP3 format into WAV files, thus making your music portableand readily accessible for your computer, stereo, Discman, or office boom box.--Emilie Dirks ... This is a lot more powerful then easy cd creator, which came on my compaq.I can do almost anything I want to the .wav file I want, except actually take data out of the wave file. For that, I found a shareware program on CNET, SoundGadget.Occasionally I run across a cd that this won't copy, and I use easy cd creator, which does copy it.There is a very good label printing program included.

    Editorial Review

The VHS-C format Panasonic PV-L850 is a high-quality Palmcorder that is also capable of taking digital stills. The PV-L850 has a 26x optical zoom (and 300x total zoom) to get you as close to the action as you need, while digital image stabilization helps eliminate jitters due to hand shake. A built-in auto-light helps compensate in low-light situations. The camera can switch from a wide-angle shot to full zoom in two seconds with the integrated Quick Zoom function, and a dedicated five-head system ensures high picture quality at any recording mode.

For recording video, the camera uses VHS-C tapes, which can be played in your VCR after they're inserted into the included adapter. If you're shooting stills, images are recorded on a CompactFlash card and transferred to your computer via an included cable.

The PV-L850 also comes with a TV tuner so you can watch live TV broadcasts, although you can't record the TV signal. The PV-L850 includes a wireless remote control (handy for both recording and playback), while a motion sensor allows the camcorder to be used as a security camera by automatically starting to record whenever something comes into the camera's view.

An assortment of effects is available when you use the PV-L850. Strobe, wide, and wipe add flavor to footage. A color digital filter works just like a traditional filter, giving your video a duotone effect. Transitions are made easy with the digital color fader. Should you need to, footage can be played back at half speed, and an auto-titler/phrase titler adds titles to footage shot for special occasions. The PV-L850 will also automatically adjust the camcorder's clock for daylight savings time. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good, but...
I have the PVL-858.I like the camera, loaded with features, but we live on the east coast, and every summer that I try to use the camera, I get the message "Dew Detected" and the thing shuts off automatically. The days are humid here, and I can't use it in the least humidity. What good is a camcorder that is so unreliable?Missed our vacation to Bermuda, and our summers at home and at the beach.ARGH!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great camcorder, but the 750 is very similar
Nice camcorder, but the 750 model is *very, very* similar.The750 is also $ . . . cheaper.

However, if you want to spend a littlemore for a slightly more powerful cam, get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough new options
Theres no point spending money on the 850 when the 750 is the same thing cheaper ... Read more

    Barbie Airplane

    Editorial Review

This aircraft has everything your little world traveler needs to fly the Barbie skies--except, perhaps,Pilot Barbie and a couple of passengers to take along for the ride. It's loaded with fun features, from a microphone that actually works to a cool takeoff sound effect (which can be deactivated with a switch in case parents start to think they're living in a major flight path). The fully reclining seats are on sliding tracks, the better to maneuver while loading passengers, and the enclosed cart makes beverage service a snap. Ice cubes come rattling out of an ice cube maker; the luggage compartment has a suitcase that really opens; and seat belts fasten tight for safety. In-flight entertainment? Looks like a BeyondPink music video is playing--make sure to get a headset so you can enjoy. When you close up the doors and roof, the whole shebang rolls, for long flights or just playtime on the go. Up, up, and away! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars warning " toy will fall apart "
I got this air plain for my 5yr old I thought it looked great on the box and even when we first opened it I thought it looked great It has everything an real airplain would have The problem is the peice's are way to small for the kids to handle and everything falls apart the seat belt's come off to easily the wing's fall off the seat's them self's won't even stay on my daughter and I were both disappointed

2-0 out of 5 stars eh....
i had this toy when i was about 5. i was very excited when i got it, but after that, i barely ever played w/ it. then, i lost all the pieces (even the seats). after that, it just sat inside my closet untouched. so, i dont recommend this toy for 4-year-olds and under, cuz its a choking hazard from all the little pieces. if u get this toy, then u should put all the little pieces in plastic bags, and make sure that all the bigger pieces always stay in the plane. it might be actually fun if u do that. so u can still buy it, just be careful w/ all the pieces or u will regret that u did buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many little pieces...
There are too many little pieces in this thing.I had it when I was little and some of the forks, knives, spoons, and little ice cubes got stuck in the cracks in the bottom of the plane. In alot of ways it is still a fun toy.It has a little microphone and stuff.Just watch out for the little tiny pieces! ... Read more

'N Sync Marionette Doll: Joey Fatone
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
    Toy
    list price: $19.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Joey Fatone, a singer with the popular rock group 'N Sync, comes to life in puppet form with this bendable marionette. Its faceand clothes are modeled after Joey, right down to the pierced ears, carefully trimmed beard, and gelled hair. Even the marionette'sclothing looks like something Joey would wear, including the Doc Martinlace-up boots. The idea is for fans to move the marionettes to 'N Syncmusic, which is easy to do even if puppeteers don't have much skill.Fortunately, the puppet also comes with an instruction sheet thatteaches basic marionette moves, such as sitting, bowing, foot stomping, and hand shaking. It will take patience and practice, but eventuallydedicated fans can beef up their marionette skills and have Joeyperform "in sync" to his band's music. Joey also comes with a displaystand and photo poster. --Hannah Reynolds ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice concept...
This marionette isn't something that interests more 9-10 year old girls because they want to play with it more like a Ken doll, not Pinocchio. This toy isn't very educational. It is frustrating. The joints are stiff and can be difficult to move. It is extremely durable because after a few days, it gets forgotten about.

2-0 out of 5 stars NSYC Review
Although cute for my 9 year old daughter, I find these marionettes do not move well. They seem to me more of a proud dust collector.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Toy Is BORING!!
I thought this toy was boring. I don't see why some people would want it. I have one major word for all the kids out there that want to waste their money on buying it. The one major word is BORING!! ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-To
Getting Your 15 Minutes of Fame and More! is about just that.Well written, this book is for fame-hunters or those who want to understand how to attain fame.Loaded with useful ideas!

Just as good is Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which also explores how to get noticed. Both books deal with how to have a NAME.

Segal knows what he's talking about--he's done it for hundreds of clients before, making sure people not only talk about them, but keep talking about them.Still, if having fame--or infamy--isn't the whole shebang to you, you might want to give it a pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive. Easy to Use.
In today's rush-rush world, anything we can do to attract the attention of potential customers is worthwhile. An incredible amount of messages are competing for the attention of the people we want to reach. Whether you'rerunning a business, offering professional services, running for electiveoffice, or promoting a book, it's important to have your name in front ofyour public.

Quite a few books have been written over the years to helpus get our name into the public spotlight. Some have really sound ideas;others are mere sound. With all these books and a plethora of publicrelations firms, do we need another guidebook? I approached GETTING YOUR 15MINUTES OF FAME with a skeptical "here we go again" attitude. Iwas pleasantly surprised.

Ed Segal, a recognized master in the field, hasprovided us with a powerful volume of ideas and techniques. The book isdelightfully easy to read, with 87 short chapters that each focus on aspecific methods of spreading your message. I read the book from cover tocover (316 pages), but this work effectively serves as a reference guide. The strong table of contents and index make it easy to find what you'relooking for.

The text is organized into seven major areas: How to Getfrom Here to There (lots of interesting background information about publicrelations), Getting Your Act Together (insights and how-to tips), EightGateways to Fame (the most frequently used channels and how to use them),Tools of the Trade (a wide range of techniques and tactics), Get TheirAttention (a treasure of promotional ideas), From Fame to Infamy (how toprotect yourself against bad press), and "Thanks for Having Me Back,Oprah" (measuring your success and keeping it all in perspective). Thebook's resources section is supplemented by the author's web site. Cleveridea: Segal can post fresh examples and ideas on his web site to manage adynamic, ever-changing relationship with his readers. This is a long-termthing, not just read a book and forget it. I liked the way the authorcross-referenced the chapters. Whenever other chapter(s) might have abearing on an approach or idea, there's a reference to the other chaptersso the reader can keep it all connected. In spite of all the work I've doneto promote myself, my firm, and my work over the past two decades, Ilearned a lot from this book. I recommend GETTING YOUR 15 MINUTES OF FAMEfor experienced promoters as well as those readers who have been there, done that. ... Read more
