Backstreet Boys - A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys Average Customer Review: DVD (07 November, 2000) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $13.48 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys is a romantic, heartfelt, and intimate live performance recorded in Germany in 1998.An introduction with members Kevin Richardson and Howie Doroughexplains that the Boys have always wanted to perform for their fans andthemselves in an acoustic concert. Much like the well-known MTVUnplugged series, the Backstreet Boys perform with a full orchestraand a small choir for background vocals. There is no choreography, theydo mostly ballads and mid-tempo songs, and most of the time theycasually sit on bar stools. The group is exposed musically, providingthe opportunity to show their fans and their critics that theBackstreet Boys "really do have talent." Starting with "Who Do You Love," "As Long as You Love Me," and "10,000 Promises," there can be no mistaking that the Backstreet Boys do indeedhave real musical talent. The solo section begins with Brian Littrellsinging "That's What She Said/Where Can We Go from Here?" andaccompanying himself on guitar, followed by A.J. McLean doing a soulful"Lay Down Beside Me." Nick Carter performs "I Need You Tonight" andHowie shines on "My Heart Stays with You." Kevin closes the solosection with a beautiful, untitled piano instrumental. Finally, theboys return to the stage for "Like a Child," the up-tempo "All I Haveto Give," a medley of "If I Don't Have You/I'll Never Break YourHeart," "Quit Playing Games with My Heart," and a new arrangement of"Let's Have a Party." The stylish video versions of "All I Have toGive" and "I'll Never Break Your Heart" are also included to completethis 70-minute "night out." --Larry Clark ... Read more Features Reviews (63)

I finally decided to do something about it after a friend made fun of me recently.I've asked family members and friends to teach me how to dance, but nobody was able to teach me the fundamental rule that this video does: All you do is move your feet to the beat, and everything else will follow.I had always tried too hard to move my upper body to the beat. That's not the idea at all! Some of the video was not helpful.Nobody does the forward-and-back type dancing. Some of the side-to-side stuff was not too useful, but the basic 'step left-step right', to the beat, was quite helpful indeed.Get that basic step down and you'll find yourself doing your own variations of it on the dance floor.Skip the double step...you probably won't even find room for that in most clubs. If you can look past the occasional corniness of the video, you can really pick up some useful tips and can learn to dance in minutes!

Conair NE150NCS Cordless Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer Average Customer Review: Health and Beauty list price: $12.99 -- our price: $6.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Let's discuss something no one wants to talk about: ear and nose hair. It's simply a reality of life that, as we age, hair in these places can become longer and thicker. Despite the fact that no one wants to talk about it, unsightly hair doesn't go unnoticed; each of us can remember the dentist we had as a child, whose nose hair we'd gaze at as our teeth were worked on. Conair's cordless nose and ear hair trimmer can help you avoid becoming like that dentist. Engineered to safely cut hair in nostrils and ears, this trimmer's sheathed stainless-steel blades eliminate the painful risk of using scissors. Simply insert the tip of the trimmer and let it do its thang. Then we'll never have to discuss this topic again, will we? Two-year warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Yamaha PSR260AD 61-Note Touch-Sensitive Portable Electronic Keyboard with AC Adapter Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $189.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you are looking to buy a first keyboard at a reasonable price, try the Yamaha PSR260AD on for size. It's uncomplicated and fun to play, and it might just help you develop music skills. The PSR260AD has 100 voices ranging from pianos to trumpets to drums. One hundred accompaniments, from twistto fusion, can be mixed with the voices. As a MIDI-compatible keyboard, the PSR260AD can connect to a sequencer or computer via MIDI cables (sold separately), both of which can record musical performances from thekeyboard and then play them back using the instrument voices on the PSR260AD.After a while, though, 100 voices will probably seem limiting to most users. The PSR260AD is not a General MIDI keyboard, which means that if you connect it to a computer, General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet) will not sound correct--the instrumentation will be wrong. One feature on the PSR260AD that most people (especially children and teenagers) will enjoy is the DJ. Pressing the button shaped like a vinyl record resets the keyboard for playing special DJ songs and voices. There are orchestra hits, samples of real voices singing phrases such as "one more time" and "Get up!" and a variety of scratches. There is even a DJ game programmed into the keyboard that helps users develop rhythm skills. One hundred other songs of various styles are also included that are fun to play and are used in the three lessons offered by the PSR260AD. The lessons can all be done with left hand alone, right hand alone, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student presses any note in the proper time. During the waiting lesson, the PSR260AD holds theaccompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. And in the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time. An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson. A staff display and keyboard displayhelp the student identify the correct keys, while animated clapping hands help the student visualize the rhythm. A dictionary function shows the different chord types on the display staff. These educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student may pick up rudimentary skills that will help in the further study of music. The PSR260AD is an easy keyboard to use, even for a small child. It is lightweight (11.7 lbs.) even though it has built-in speakers. The buttons are all colorful and clearly marked, and all of the accompaniments, voices, and song styles are printed right on the keyboard. Most of the functionality is so intuitive and simple, you may never need to take the manual out of the shrink-wrap! The PSR260AD is a fun keyboard to play, but it is mostly a learning tool and creative toy. It will provide many hours of entertainment for younger users, and it may very well inspire them to study music. --Chris Fresolone Pros:

Digital CD Recording Studio 2.0 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (25 July, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Macmillan's Digital CD Recording Studio II attempts, in many ways, to beeverything to everyone. Been meaning to put all of those LPs onto CD once andfor all? How about converting those cassettes (or, gasp--eight tracks!) to thedigital realm? Maybe you're not interested in buying an extra player for yourthousands of megabytes of MP3 files. In any case, Digital CD Recording Studio IIcan manage your musical assets efficiently. You'll be working in a familiar three-pane environment: file structure at left, file contents in the center, and options and selections at right. The toolbarwill give you direct access to everything from creating a new play list, torecording from an analog audio source, to converting MP3 data, to processingrecordings. Begin with your average playlist. The summary box keeps you up to speed on totalnet playing time versus total playing time with silent, between-song gaps, plusavailable CD-R space and time. For those who are concerned with improving the quality of your recordings (and, who isn't, when we're talking about upgrading the analog to the digital?), youwon't want to miss the PlayInfo panel, which measures instantaneous volume peaksin decibels. The Producer panel is another cool feature that sports a range ofprocessing options. Other noteworthy features include:
In order to use other devices along with Digital CD Recording Studio II, you'llneed to update the appropriate sound card settings and get the right hardware, which usually consists of a stereo patch cable, or "Y" cable. Once you're setup, you'll be able to record from this source through the software, unpack thelarge recording file into individual tracks, clean up your recording, andproduce your CD--all with relative ease. Recording through this package allows you to record in stereo or mono, and youcan choose a range of sampling (from 11.025 kHz to 44.1 kHz). You also canrecord radio programs at any time, whether you're present or not--the TimerRecording function does this with reliability. Digital CD Recording Studio II also handles the more contemporary formats of CDand MP3 with relative proficiency. After you wade through numerous warnings oncopyright infringement, you'll find yourself able to select easily any of theWAV files on your average audio CD for recording. Likewise with MP3: you'll beable to convert the MP3 format into WAV files, thus making your music portableand readily accessible for your computer, stereo, Discman, or office boom box.--Emilie Dirks ... I have a 650 Mhz Pentium 3-based laptop and I have never seen software do to a computer what this did to mine. It continually crashed my system again...and again...and again. Each time I had to let my laptop's battery completely discharge. Then I would reboot the system before I could gain any measure of control over it. Why did I keep trying? I guess I must like pain; I didn't realize it until now, but I must.END ... Read more Asin: B00004SUK1 |

Getting Your 15 Minutes of Fame and More!: A Guide to Guaranteeing Your Business Success by Average Customer Review: Paperback (24 March, 2000) list price: $24.95 -- our price: $16.47 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
Just as good is Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which also explores how to get noticed. Both books deal with how to have a NAME. Segal knows what he's talking about--he's done it for hundreds of clients before, making sure people not only talk about them, but keep talking about them.Still, if having fame--or infamy--isn't the whole shebang to you, you might want to give it a pass.
These techniques will get yourcompany, organisation, or self squarely in the public spotlight, andstaying there. Throughout the book, you'll also find instructive, oftenhilarious "Hall of Fame/Hall of Shame" accounts of some of themost successful and disastrous uses of these techniques. Edward Segal ispresident of his own full-service public relations agency, Edward SegalCommunications, based in Washington, DC. He is one of North America's mostwell-known PR experts, proving public relations counsel to Fortune 500companies, government agencies and trade associations. His articles haveappeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Wall StreetJournal.
Quite a few books have been written over the years to helpus get our name into the public spotlight. Some have really sound ideas;others are mere sound. With all these books and a plethora of publicrelations firms, do we need another guidebook? I approached GETTING YOUR 15MINUTES OF FAME with a skeptical "here we go again" attitude. Iwas pleasantly surprised. Ed Segal, a recognized master in the field, hasprovided us with a powerful volume of ideas and techniques. The book isdelightfully easy to read, with 87 short chapters that each focus on aspecific methods of spreading your message. I read the book from cover tocover (316 pages), but this work effectively serves as a reference guide. The strong table of contents and index make it easy to find what you'relooking for. The text is organized into seven major areas: How to Getfrom Here to There (lots of interesting background information about publicrelations), Getting Your Act Together (insights and how-to tips), EightGateways to Fame (the most frequently used channels and how to use them),Tools of the Trade (a wide range of techniques and tactics), Get TheirAttention (a treasure of promotional ideas), From Fame to Infamy (how toprotect yourself against bad press), and "Thanks for Having Me Back,Oprah" (measuring your success and keeping it all in perspective). Thebook's resources section is supplemented by the author's web site. Cleveridea: Segal can post fresh examples and ideas on his web site to manage adynamic, ever-changing relationship with his readers. This is a long-termthing, not just read a book and forget it. I liked the way the authorcross-referenced the chapters. Whenever other chapter(s) might have abearing on an approach or idea, there's a reference to the other chaptersso the reader can keep it all connected. In spite of all the work I've doneto promote myself, my firm, and my work over the past two decades, Ilearned a lot from this book. I recommend GETTING YOUR 15 MINUTES OF FAMEfor experienced promoters as well as those readers who have been there, done that. ... Read more Isbn: 0471370584 |
