    Editorial Review

The Canon EOS Rebel 2000 is an affordable, lightweight, andfull-featured automatic 35mm SLR for both beginning and advancedamateur photographers. It offers a host of special modes for specificshooting situations, including full auto, manual, night scene, portrait, landscape, and more. It also has shutter-speed priority andaperture priority modes--although most users will inevitably leave thecamera in full auto mode a majority of the time and the cameraperforms very well that way. Just remember that the empty rectanglesymbol on the mode dial is for full auto.

Some other basic features include an impressive seven-point autofocussystem, LCD panel with extensive information display, three exposuremetering modes (evaluative, partial, and centerweighted), autoexposure bracketing, a multiple exposure function, and depth-of-fieldpreview. The autofocus system is incredibly responsive, and includesseven focusing points that can be set individually for super creativeshooting. In other words, using the LCD panel as a guide, you can setthe camera to automatically focus on the far right focus point (or anyof the other points) so your main subject doesn't have to be in themiddle of the frame to be in focus in a snap.

In fact, most settings can be adjusted in creative ways on the Rebel2000, like the exposure level, which can be set to overexpose orunderexpose up to two full stops for tricky lighting situations whereyou might want to fool the camera's metering system. It also has asmall, built-in pop-up flash, plus a hot shoe for an additional flashunit. Overall, we found this camera to be smartly designed with anattractive look and a comfortable feel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Camera I have Ever Owned
I started off with a fully manual camera that I used for my photography classes a few years ago.Once I was ready to upgrade, I came across this camera and fell in love with it.There are enough manual settings to keep me challenged, but the easy automatic settings make this camera perfect for all of my everyday shots.

I have taken wonderful, professional quality shots without even changing the settings, and my 14 year old sister found the camera easy to use even though she has almost no knowledge of cameras. This camera is great for photographers in all stages and learning levels, because the pictures turn out great every time and it has enough range to get a great shot no matter what mode you use it in.

I really don't think I could ever say enough about this camera to acurately describe it, so my best advice is GO OUT AND GET ONE!You will not regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best camera I've ever owned
This is the first SLR camera that I have ever owned.I bought it because I was going on a trip around the world, wanted a nice camera, and had it recommended by a camera shop owner. It is extremely easy to use, so easy that I could hand the camera to someone in one of the countries I visited, point to the button they needed to push and I ended up with a great picture.I didn't need to explain a thing.I also didn't mind carrying it around all day, it is very light for its size.

I have owned the camera for four years now and it still takes beautiful pictures.I have taken all sorts of pictures with this camera, from landscapes to action shots and they all turn out great. The action shots are never blurry! The only complaint that I have is that the autofocus does not work well in low lighting, sometimes it is slow and sometimes it won't work at all.In these cases I just turn on the manual focus option.

All the options that the camera has are great, but to be honest I rarely use them.I've found that it is often easier to use manual focus than to adjust the camera so it will autofocus off center. If I know that I'm going to be taking action shots or landscapes I will set the camera to that mode, but often I forget and my pictures still look great.

I think that this is an excellent camera, especially for someone that is used to a point and shoot but wants the extra quality that a SLR camera can give them. There are also many choices when it comes to additional lenses, so when the photography bug gets you, this camera can stay with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This camera is Great!
I had been searching Amazon for a camera for about a year and had decided on a camera to get.But then one night I was searching through amazon again and came across the rebel 2000 and bought it that night. The design was my first concern when deciding on what to get, I have bigger hands so little cameras are hard for me to deal with. While this camera is not a HUGE one it is just the right size for me and I love it.The shutter button is in a great spot to.Other cameras i have had in the past have had the button right on the top of the camera, not this one, they put the button where the finger would naturally fall.Inturn making my pictures a lot less blurry from not haveing to move my finger to press the shuttter button.

This is definetly a camera for a beginning professional photographer. You can set the camera at manual or total auto, which is great. There are many pre-set settings if your not a professional photographer, but if you are they are all pretty much there.

I will definetly be recomending this camera to anyone who is looking into buying a good one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you really do better for the money?
No complaints so far with this lens. Using it on my EOS 300. Great looking, sharp images at the lower zoom rates and completely acceptible and actually pretty darn good images at fullest zoom. With my testing so far it's plenty fast as long as you use a tripod at the longest zoom lengths. No prob for me since I most always use a tripod while photographing.
Have not experienced the lens extending out fully when aimed downward like others have. I'd even have to say mine feels "quite right" in terms of resistance on the zoom ring.
Bottom line, this lens is great deal at this price!!!!! If you can spend more get the IS model or some L glass .....I can't!

4-0 out of 5 stars Correction on May 16th Review
The software mentioned on my May 16th review IS called "AVID Xpress" -- not "AVID Express" -- when my review was edited someone changed the spelling, possibly thinking it was a typo/mistake?

    4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CAMERA!A DELIGHT! FUN ! A PLEASURE!
I bought the TRV 900 in September of 1999 and have been very pleased these past few years. This camera is lightweight enough to travel with...with me, it's been from Italy to Arizona...and produces clean, colorful pictures.I can also grab "still" pictures from my videos and have a perfectly captured photo (i.e. the perfect smile on someone's face or a moment in which a bird dives into a shot etc.)My only wish with this photo function is that the still photos had better picture quality...as good as the video.Nevertheless, it is still a fun function and allows me to send my photos from trips to others via email. The camera has many special effects which are fun to work with such as black and white, sepia tone, negative (great for manually made titles), slim (make yourself thinner!), stretch (make people on the beach fatter!), posterized effects etc...if you can edit in your head, these effects can save rendering time later.(For editing, I've used AVID EXpress DV. The Sony TRV 900 footage loads nicely into the AVID Express DV editing system and is a pleasure to work with.AVID Express DV editing software is expensive (2K) and does have somewhat of a learning curve but with time and effort is well worth the money. If you get this software and you're new to editing, get a turnkey system from a place such as Promax. )

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony Handycam [messed] up my computer
The USB software bundled by Sony for transferring images to computer COMPLETELY [MESSED] UP MY SYSTEM. The installation is very dicey. You need to do things in a precise order. It is prone to getting [messed] up,... it can't be fixed. As usual, the Sony software is a mess.
Their instructions for unscrambling the mess don't work. They just get you deeper into the woods.
Be sure to get the extended warranty if you buy this product. You will probably need it. As for the computer, it may require a complete disk wipe and reinstallation. God help you if you have RAID or something else. WHAT A MESS. Sony is big enough that they don't care. They don't have to. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Technical -- Advanced
Covers virtually anything do do with black and white processing.Provides all the 'How To" so lacking in other books.Does not omit non-Ilford developers, but includes charts for them as well. But the book iscertainly for the serious ameteur or pro, and is very technical.I reallyneed the data provided on a daily basis, so the techical aspects don'tbother me -- they're a plus! But others may find the book too much andwish simpler explanations.I'm biased here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book!
This book is amazing. It really has everything you would need to know to build a darkroom, from building the walls, doing plumbing and electricity, to how to build a sink. I am so happy I bought this book - there were so many little things I didn't even consider until I started reading this book. Now I know what I need to build the darkroom, and can actually envision what it will be like. I have so many ideas, and I'm really excited about building my darkroom!

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
I bought this book as the other books I have are now a bit dated. As the understanding of film development is always evolving, I thought this book would give me the latest ideas and knowledge.
It does to some extent, but I could not help feeling the authors did not take the time to fully research and comprehend the details. Where they have quoted chemists / researchers the details are clear. However where they have tried to interpret or discuss aspects in some places it appears they do not clearly understand what they are trying to explain. The result is that they contradict themselves, fail to make things clear, or just plain get things wrong. They also only seem to address research by Kodak and a few independent researchers. The book thus misses out on research done by Fuji, Agfa, Ilford, etc.which is a significant omission in my opinion.

So is the book worth it ?I think that I would still buy it as there are very few sources of up to date information available. And to be fair, they seem to have taken care in reproducing the formula. However, I would be sure to read some of the older books on developers, and cross check the information before relying on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great advanced user book from Anchell.
I bought and read every page of all three of Steve Anchell's black and white photo information books: The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, The Film Developing Cookbook, and The Darkroom Cookbook. Why? Because he gives a mix of an historical view plus tells what to pick of the best current chemistries. He does this without bogging down in the actual complexities of a college chemistry course keeping it at a usable technicians level. Since he also tells you why you are using various chemicals or paper his books do not dumb down but instead give you fascinating useful information. Anyone serious about darkroom work will appreciate his insights and commentary about chemistry use. He lists so many historical and current B&W chemical formulas and their use that any B&W experimenter will find the books useful. Beginners may get information overload but anyone who has already done B&W developing will appreciate the vast amount of information. These books could use an overall rewrite to make them a bit simpler to understand, in spite of this they are one of the few sources to accumulate this B&W information and are well worth owning as a reference and explanation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for history and formulas, NOT for beginners...
I bought this book under the assumption and recommendation that it would teach me how to begin developing my own film...Unfortunately, this is NOT the book for that! This book has great historical value in describing the different formulas, their strengths and weaknesses, and contains charts that are probably valuable to those who ALREADY process their own film. This book is NOT for beginners looking into how one goes about processing their own film! ... Seems only people that don't like something write a review.Personally, I like the frame.I KNEW it could only be used with an $8 a month service over the Internet BEFORE I bought it.The service is easy to use and so is the frame. My Mother doesn't have to do anything to get 20 pictures a day sent to her.I have uploaded 200+ photos and 20 new ones randomly appear every morning. They can use any picture I send for what ever they want - I don't care!Hell, maybe I'll become so popular that my face will become a commodity and some one will call me for a $$million$$ contract! (yeah-right) There are several other options one the service, like sending photos on a certain day, locking certain photos so they stay on the frame, etc.My mother lives 1,500 miles from me and has no computer or computer knowledge, so this works very nicely. My brother can also send photos, as can anyone else I am willing to give my password to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very durable and great.
I own it and it has been droped many times since santa gave it to me (about 2001 0r 2002). When I got it for christmas, it did not work with win xp or win 2000. My dad got me a program from intel's website wich would download the all the pictures on the camera. Now I use a driver from the same website. Then, I used the driver that came with the camera on an Win 98 pc. Today I use it a lot.It still works. Intel no longer sells this line.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Intel- and this product is just more reason!
I have had limited exposure to video recording, but much use of Intel products, including the stock making me a first generation millionaire! I was skeptical about this product, given the lens configuration, data processing, and some other concerns.

I was amazed! I have a $5000 Sony that is a great videocam, and I can't tell any quality in the film I make with the INtel cam as with the Sony! It even does a terrific job in outdoor, nature photography, which was much more than I expected.

Per dollar this is THE BEST PRODUCT of any kind I have bought in 5 years! I just wish INTEL would go ahead and make the whole darn desktop and laptop computer!

The Intel Pocket PC Camera is a great camera to own. I find the quality to be AMAZING. Sure it has no flash, but that's one thing i can live without seeing as to how i have ANOTHER camera with a flash that i use for backup. Anyhow, the CCD Sensor is probably the best thing about it. CMOS sensor cameras are usually [bad]and you can't see colors in shady areas (non-lit areas). The intel is very easy to operate and anybody could figure it out. The software is wonderful and the webcam is too. This whole camera is a great buy...the pictures will blow you away, just like it did to me. I have the rare black one so it looks less childish, heh. :o) ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The simply designed setup and interface of the Epson Perfection 1650 Photo will have you happily scanning away in just a few minutes. The scanner connects to your PC or Macintosh via a USB cable, and its slim design and small footprint show that it was designed with the home office in mind. For digital photographers, the 1650 Photo includes a 35mm film adapter along with Adobe Photoshop Elements for editing and enhancing your digital images.

A serious hobbyist couldn't ask for a better combination of precision and value. Despite the relatively low price, the scanner offers a 16-bit grayscale, 48-bit color, and a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 3,200 dpi--which is more than enough scanning power to glean every sharp detail from family photos.

One-touch buttons allow you to instantly copy, print, or e-mail photos. The built-in zoom feature provides a range of 50 to 200 percent, supplying plenty of options for enlarging or cropping your final prints. A cold cathode ray lamp is used as the light source, a powerful and economical choice that provides hours of efficient lighting. Maximum scan size is 8.5 x 11 inches, large enough for most office documents as well as your favorite vacation shots.

Included in the box is the scanner, film adapter, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a USB cord, along with Epson Twain and a design software package. The manufacturer's warranty covers parts and labor for a full year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does descreening on magazine pics as well as slides
A great scanner, but it took a little time for me to set it up with the software.Called service at Epson and was so impressed with them.Problem I had with setup was that I had not uninstalled my UMAX software (previous scanner) and there were conflicts.Once I took it off, no problem.Called Epson service later to find out how to use the descreen function in order to scan pics from magazines without getting a moire pattern, but the tech guy said he'd have another more knowledgeable guy call me.The new service tech was top notch and spent (his dime) more than an hour with me on the phone showing me how to set up the scanning for special effects, color adjustments, descreening, and so much more.I recommend you use the "manual" setup rather than the automatic scan setup, and if you have Photoshop you don't need to install their image editing software.Great service.Great scanner. They have a newer one now, model 1660, which I assume is even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars great quality scans
Bought for scanning several family photo albums onto CDs for members of the family. 800+ pictures later, the 1650-Photo is still buzzing along without any gliches.
Installation was easy, done with clear printed directions (onto a Mac G4 running OS 9.2)
The scanner does a quick pre-scan to produce an image you can see to make whatever adjustments for framing, color, contrast, shadow & highlight levels you desire. If you use the Auto mode instead, the software is so "smart" that it will usually produce results as good as you can do using the adjustments mode.
Once you are satisfied with the pre-scan image, you click on "scan", which the 1650 does in about 4 seconds. Thumbnail images of each scanned photo are displayed, along with the option to type in a name for each.
The picture files can be saved into several file types. If you chose .jpg you can adjust the file size, going small for e-mail use, to large for making paper prints.
I have not yet made any scans of photo negatives, but have of jewelry and maps and they turn out great! An excellent product at a very reasonable price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Compatible with Mac OS X
I purchased the Epson 1650 Photo Flatbed Scanner 6 months ago.The primary reason I was attracted to this particular model was it's ability to scan 35mm slides. NOT.... Although Epson claims it is Mac compatible, Epson neglects to inform the consumer that the scanner IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the Mac OS X operating system.

Epson has been promising me delivery of the necessary drivers (at an additional cost, accompanied by a sales receipt, UPC bar code, and required application form) for 6 months now. In my latest contact with Epson (Oct. 3,2002) I am told they "do not know when the driver will be available".

So in conclusion, you owners of Mac computers - don't consider buying this product if you expect to use it as a scanner ... foranything else? ... it's up to you! ... Read more
