Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

This CanoScan flatbed scanner delivers 600 x 1,200 resolution in a slim package, just over 1 inch high. It uses a single USB cable for both power and data from any compatible Mac or PC. This scanner offers 42-bit scanning with more than four trillion possible colors. It also has an external programmable button for fast, one-touch scanning.

Another handy feature is Canon's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top, which allows you to scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Many other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat; the N650U scanner cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts up to 1 inch vertically and lies flat to create extra space. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nice scanner, but useless after upgrading computers
I have had this scanner for a couple of years and I loved it with my old Windows 98 computer and my Mac OS 9.0 laptop. Then I bought a Mac Mini with OS 10x. I have had compatibility nightmares ever since.

I found out that it'll work with OS 10 IF and ONLY IF I install Adobe PhotoShop or Elements. Why should I have to spend $100 or more on software to get an $80 scanner to work? So, I got my laptop back out and started scanning and working on my graphics files on the laptop, where I have expensive programs that I cannot yet afford to replace. But in order to get an external CD Burner to work I had to upgrade to OS 9.1.

Now, after just upgrading from Mac OS 9.0 to 9.1 I have to go through the whole process of troubleshooting again. I've already spent half a day in total frustration.

This scanner should be off the market - without new drivers it's totally useless. It's more of a shame because I had liked it very much until a couple of months ago. There should be no reason for Canon and/or Mac to get appropriate drivers up and online.

3-0 out of 5 stars worked great until the glass broke
I had this scanner for a couple years. I thought it worked really good. I used it mainly for scanning pictures, and they were very sharp. Then one day the glass shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces with no apparent explaination.

3-0 out of 5 stars works OK but some limitations
Unlike some of the others with this unit,I had no trouble installing and using it (one I got the right drivers, that is -- J&R Music world initially sent me the wrong disk, grrr).

Though it runs a little slow, it does make reasonably clean scans, and makes MUCH less clutter on and behind my desk than most other machines, which is why I bought it.

People need to know, however, that the lens has crummy depth-of field, which means that anything that is not dead flat against the glass will look fuzzy. My previous scanner could make acceptable images of small three-dimensional objects;this one won't.

Also, the color balance is kind of off,too blue-tinged.With my Paint Shop Pro, I need to subtract a little blue and add a little red to the scans to make them look like real life.

I assume that both these problems (poor depth of field and color imbalance) come from the dim scanning lamp neccesitated by the low power available to the unit. ... Read more

Fujifilm FinePix 1300 1.2MP Digital Camera

    Editorial Review

Compare a scooter to a motorcycle. The scooter is a fraction of the size, power, and price, but around town, the scooter is as quick and fun as the motorcycle, and you can even take it some places the motorcycle won't go. The Fuji 1300 is the digital camera equivalent of a scooter--inexpensive and lower tech than some digital cameras, but really quick, easy, and fun to operate. And for the average camera user it will produce pictures very nearly as good as those from a substantially more expensive camera.

The 1300 is a revised version of Fuji's well-loved but short-lived MX-1200 camera. For the 1300, Fuji redesigned the case to make it (slightly) more stylish and replaced the serial transfer plug with a much faster USB connection. Otherwise, the camera remains essentially the same as its predecessor.

Compared to virtually every digital camera on the market (and especially its 1-megapixel peers), this camera is a speed demon. If you don't need to use the flash, you can turn the camera on and take your first shot in under a second. There's virtually no shutter lag (the shutter clicks a split second after you press the button), and the camera is ready to take another shot in less than 5 seconds. Though some cameras' LCD screens are slow, streaky, or choppy, the Fuji has a fast, smooth display.

Technophobes have little to fear: this Fuji is as easy to operate as a point-and-shoot film camera, automatically setting shutter speed and white balance and activating the flash, if necessary. Users looking for more creative control can adjust the exposure compensation, white balance, flash, and other settings manually. The camera also has a macro mode and a self-timer.

    Pros:

    • Very quick performance
    • USB uncommon in cameras in this price range
    • Simple and fun to operate
    Cons:
    • No video out (to display images on TV)
    • Macro abilities limited by fixed-focus lens

2-0 out of 5 stars Only get it if you want to haul around extra batteries!!!
This is NOT a very good camera for the price. If you leave the batteries in the camera, they are drained in a day.I finally figured out that the best way to go about it was to keep a separate bag with the batteries in it and put them in the camera before I use it.This is very annoying because then it wants you to re-set the time when you start it back up again. Not good for close-ups or low light.(I tried to use it to photograph my jewelry but got poor results.)Also, it does not have a zooming lens. For everyday shots of my family and friends outdoors or indoor with a flash, this is an OK camera.Still, I have found that you can get a much better product at a comparable price in the 35mm format, which you can now get "developed" and put on disc at most major film development outlets. And for only $50 - $100 more you can get a good quality digital Canon, Nikon, or Olympus that zooms and they might not have the battery problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dream or nightmare depending on your expectations
A wonderful tool for road warriors and IT support personnel if used within its limitations.Understanding those limitations will make the difference between your liking or hating this card, and will also set your expectations for what you should use this card for.

Limitations:this is a relatively low-speed communications device that is constrained by digital phone network capabilities and not the engineering behind the device itself. I use Verizon and have gotten reasonably good results in both speed and communications reliability when using this with a laptop. What is "reasonably good results"?I view it as communication speed in the 14.4-19.6kpbs range, which is much slower than we are used to for web browsing and downloading dozens of e-mail messages, some with massive attachments. If you are expecting the same speed as you get from your laptop modem, home DSL or office LAN you will be sorely disappointed. If you want a solution to getting last minute e-mail before getting on a plane and are using a web-based e-mail system (like Microsoft Outlook's web-based option or a mail service like Yahoo or Hotmail) this is an excellent tool. The difference between POP (post office protocol) mail that most of us use and the web-based variety is you have no control over the message download process with POP - it steams into your system until all messages have been downloaded. You get the spam and low priority stuff with the important messages.Web-based mail allows you to preview the messages and selectively download and read them.If you do not have web-based e-mail and expect to use this card with POP mail, you might be in for a disappointment. It takes forever to download mail at the relatively low speed at which this device operates.

Other issues include the cell site strength of your provider. I use Verizon and live in Southern California. My area has great service and coverage, except for in the late afternoon when the network seems to congest and calls drop.If you have problems with dropped calls with your provider this might not be the device for you.

How IT professionals can use this device. If you have a laptop or palmtop computer and get paged that is triggered by an event, such as a file system at 80% or, say, a database problem, you can hook this device into your phone/laptop and initiate a telnet session once you get into your network - regardless of where you are, troubleshoot and possible resolve the problem.

As an IT professional I personally view this device as an emergency tool, much like the jumper cables I carry in my trunk. I do not use it often, but when I need it I know I have a tool that will connect me to where I need to connect.Surfing the net with it, on the other hand, is not only agonizing, but expensive.

It installs easily and works right out of the box. You be the judge and make an informed decision based on limitations and utility. If you can live with the limitations and see the same potential for utility as I, then this is a 5 star device, which is how I'm rating it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do you need to have sprintpcs web for this thing to work
this refers to using this product with sprintpcs samsung 8500 phone.

I keep getting "no carrier detected" with this thing, and the phone does not show any message, on its screeen. The phone is samsung 8500.

The palm pc that I have connects with no problem at all with the normal modem, to the same ISP, same number.

Do you need to enable data on the phone through sprint? Do you need to pay for the wireless web from sprint to get this to work

    2-0 out of 5 stars I'm dissappointed!
I've written very few 'negitive' reviews but unfortunately this is one. I bought this to connect my 'Handspring Visor' to my 'Sprint PCS Samsung 3500'. Not only am I dissappointed that I could not get it to work, but after many attempts to get assistance from Socket, I gave up. So, my advice... from the previous reviews, I'm guessing that this thing works great for some people. But, if your not sure what your doing and you may need help from the company, don't count on getting it... ... Read more
