    Infant/ Toddler Rockr
    Baby Product

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This infant/toddler rocker combines the functionality of afeeding and rocking chair with the ability to become a fun, practicalrocker for a 3-year-old. In infant mode, it has a swing-out bar thatstabilizes the chair to prevent it from rocking during feedings. Andthere's a simple, padded bendy bar with hanging toys, which attaches tothe sides with Velcro and stores behind the chair. For bigger kids,it's just a comfortable place to hang out or read in--although wewonder if they'll object to the three-point baby harness, which canonly be removed with the help of scissors. The soothing one-speedvibration unit requires one D battery (not included). Adult assembly(without tools) is required. --Richard Farr ... Read more

    Baby Product

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This one-stop shop for active babies ages 4 months and older isalways a popular choice. And, frankly, it's easy to see why. Not onlyis it an eye-catching contraption, but it's also filled to the brimwith engaging toys (10 in all), has a 360-degree swiveling seat, arocking base, a wraparound tray, and is height adjustable. It's also agreat way for babies to boost those dexterity skills, build hand-eyecoordination, and strengthen leg muscles for walking. It'sultraportable--albeit a bit awkward to carry--and gives baby a funplace to play alongside you in any room while you catch a quick shower,do a workout video, or just rest your weary arms. If the hullabaloo ofrocking, ringing, buzzing, and spinning is too much, simply snap downthe stabilizers and the saucer base stands still. Your baby will lovespinning around to reach the wide variety of toys that includes: ateether, a bead maze, a smiling face with flashing lights (plays ajazzy version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb"), a clear triple stackcylinder with spinning propellers, three honking smiley faces, aspinning beaker with colorful beads, a clicking steering wheel, amirror, and a clear tumbler with beads. Bumper Jumper Saratoga
    Baby Product

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This well-built Bumper Jumper is a great way for baby to develop leg strength and coordination--all while having a bouncing good time at home. Assembly and setup is very easy; just clamp it above any doorway that has molding and half an inch of flat surface on top, adjust the jumper for height, and you're ready to go. The three-pronged strap dome spreads the hanging straps nicely above the seat, allowing for easy access, and a spongy bumper runs along the outside edge of the sturdy plastic seat. The bumper will protect the trim and woodwork around your doorways, and it has the added benefit of protecting baby's hands should they get caught between the seat and the doorway. Designed for babies up to 25 pounds, the Bumper Jumper can be used from the time your baby can sit up and hold her head upright (about 6 months of age) until she can walk. Measuring 17 inches wide by 18 inches deep, the high-back seat is outfitted with a three-compartment play tray and removable fabric padding that is soft and machine washable. For visits to family and friends, you can fit the whole jumper inside a medium-size duffel bag or tuck it neatly into the corner of your car’s trunk. --Chris Burns ... Read more

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

With extra-tall 26-inch walls, the Superyard XT is a practical way to create a portable, safe play area for young children or pets. Enclosing 18 square feet, Superyard XT is made of durable reinforced plastic. Weather resistant and sturdy, the gate can go anywhere outside--yard or beach---and can also be used inside to protect displays (such as Christmas trees) or keep kids and pets away from dangerous areas. This is a great way to keep your child safely with you as you garden. Superyard arrives fully assembled; all you need to do to make an enclosure is snap two panels together. Snapping the panels together does take a bit of grunt work, but the plastic is flexible and doesn't break easily. Be aware that this product is only intended for children from 6 to 24 months of age--older children may try to climb over the gates. For younger children and pets, however, this is a great way to keep them safe and let them play. ... Read more

    French Bear Pack 'n Play
    Baby Product

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This bear-themed playard is a basic folding piece with a coupleof interesting extra features. It sets up the usual way: unfold it, popdown the floor, and lock the sides to form a secure, mesh-sided playspace that's 37 inches long by 26 inches wide by 22 inches deep. Aclip-on sunshade fits over one end, and there are three removable, stuffed toys suspended from it, like a mobile. The included bassinet, which hangs inside the frame, runs the full length and width of theplayard. In addition, there's a changing station (with a wipe-cleanpad) that hangs across the width of the frame--it's solid, but easy tofold and store. The striped fabric is durable, but a little harsh tothe touch. Locking rubber wheels at one end make the playard a snap tomove around, although the design of the tote bag means that, unlikesome models, this playard can't be moved around on its wheels, onceit's packed. --Richard Farr ... Warming a bottle of formula or milk on the stove can be discouraging: Just when you think it’s finally warm enough, it’s suddenly too warm. With all the other hassles and headaches associated with childcare, wouldn’t it be nice to strike that one off the list? This handy appliance features one heating receptacle, designed to keep fluids at the perfect temperature, as well as a removable two-bottle cooler to chill backups for future use. It even includes a nightlight so that there’s less semi-coherent fumbling when you get ready for that special 4 a.m. feeding. --John Moe ... Read more

    Ocean Wonders Aquarium
    Toy
    list price: $29.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This toy will make you want to take a nap. Equipped with straps that attach it to a crib, this play aquarium and music maker is the perfect thing to amuse a child or soothe them to sleep. There are three settings, depending on what kind of stimulation is needed: music only; music plus soft glowing lights; and music plus lights, bubbles, and moving fish. There are also three music options, the best one offering soft and melodic New Age fare, the other two somewhat odd, spacey versions of familiar lullabies. The music combined with the lights creates an instantly peaceful, soothing ambiance. There are a couple of buttons and doodads for baby to bat around that make the fish react in various ways. If these buttons were a little more responsive, this toy would be near perfect. --David Stoesz ... Read more

    Sound N Light W/dual Recv'r
    Baby Product

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This thoughtfully designed Sounds 'n' Lights Monitor provides two distinct advantages over the traditional single-receiver monitor: it comes with two receivers so parents and caretakers can listen in on baby from more than one location in the house at the same time, and the variable light displays on both receivers make it possible for you to monitor the noise coming from baby's room visually, without actually hearing it. Along with a power-indicator light, the monitor is equipped with two separate channels and both receivers can be powered by the included AC adaptors, or 9-volt batteries when you want to move the receivers away from an electrical outlet. The Sounds 'n' Lights Monitor comes with a one-year limited warranty and three AC adaptors, but you will have to purchase the two 9-volt batteries separately if you plan on using the receivers away from an outlet. --Chris Burns ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love them!!!
I am breastfeeding and use these bottles when I pump. They work great and my daughter didn't have a problem with them. i like the fact that you can get the sippy tops for them.I haven't had any leaking problems but I don't wash them in the dishwasher, I use the avent microwave steam sterilizer which I also love. It's so convenient and fast. Who wants to wait forever on a dishwasher. So they may seeem a bit more pricey but in the long run they pay off.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only bottles we ever use
With our first child, we tried several different types of bottles, but were soon using Advent exclusively.I personally hate the feel of plastic, but very much like the solid feel of the Advent bottles. There is nothing flimsy or cheap about this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Took some getting use to.....
I too had problems with the bottles leaking and resorted to calling the 800 #.At first I thought the information they were telling me was baloney, but when I tried it, Voila, it worked!

I was tightening the bottles by hand around the collar, with out using the cap. This was causing the bottles to leak most of the time. The trick is to hold onto the cap to tighten the bottle!Believe me I really didn't think it would make any difference, however I have not had one leaky bottle since!

I would recommend the Avent bottles with no hesitation, my daughter has had no trouble with spitting up at all. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters tothe melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas ... My daughter loves her Baby Mozart. She dances to the music, she points to the objects on the screen, she loves the sights and sounds, and she intently watches for the whole half-hour. You can just see he little mind working, just wondering how those objects move! Of all the Baby Einstein options, I would recommend this one as #1!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of money.
This was my first Baby Einstein purchase....and MY LAST !. I found this DVD to be insulting to the intelligence of infants and toddlers.

This was truly a waste of money !

1-0 out of 5 stars In my opinion, another Baby Einstein flop
A lot of the toys shown in the dvd are the same old toys in the other Baby Einstein videos. This, like most Baby Einstien videos, have the typical toys, spinning things, shiny things and puppets. What really is the purpose of this?No words are spoken in this video. There is no live-action when it comes to the pictures of fruits, vegetables, animals, etc. They are just still pictures/photos.I just can't believe some of these Baby Einstein videos! It seems like they just have an idea or two and try to fill up a half hour tape and make tons of money marketing this to parents who think they are doing their children something wonderful, helpful and educational by purchasing them. And yet people will sing praises about it.I just don't get it.I have watched and reviewed 16 Baby Einstein videos and out of them all there are only 4 that I liked. They are Baby Neptune (water), Baby Newton (shapes), Baby Galileo (sky) and Numbers Nursery (1 - 5).The rest are such a waste of money and time, in my opinion.I couldn't even begin to think of letting my child sit and watch all but the four I think are decent. How can this nonsense be good for their little minds??I have written reveiws for them all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful seat!
We bought this seat instead of getting a regular full-size high chair. We live in an apartment and didn't have the floor space to store a high chair. This seat has worked out wonderfully. We keep it strapped to a dining room chair, and our daughter (15 months old) has been using the chair since she was 5 months old.We like the chair so much that we bought another one to keep at Grandma's house.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this seat
We got this seat when my son was 5 months old, and I wish we'd had it even sooner! I thought we'd want a traditional highchair, but a few moms in my playgroup recommended getting one that attaches to a regular chair - I'm really glad we took their advice. This one was really simple to put together, and I love that it takes up virtually no extra room. It's a great seat -- one of our best baby purchases so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great space saver with twins!
My twins have just finished using these chairs, at four years old! They took their first bite of rice cereal in them at 4 months, and they have worked great at every stage as they grew.We did not have room for two big bulky high chairs for the twins, so these were the perfect answer! They sat right on the kitchen table at first, and then clamped onto the chairs later. It is the best money I have ever spent on them. They have held up great for 4 years with twins! ... Read more

I bought my mobile at a local childrens consignment shop for 15 dollars and im glad after reading the reviews i didnt pay more.I put it in a box with baby clothes when i moved (baby isnt here yet) and the music stopped working when i went to show my friend...i havent wound it up all the way so i dont know about the length.i went back to the consignment shop and thank god they had an extra music part they gave me for free.I guess I got really lucky.

When my husband and I began to put together the mobile, we were so thrilled with how it looked and couldn't wait to see it operate. We got it set up and then twisted the winder to see it go. Agghhh! The horror! The music was not only loud, but it was sooooo out of tune. It sounded like a bad horror film. It was also disappointing because the music and motion only lasted about a minute and then you would have to spin the winder up again. What a pain. Useless! We took it back to get one of the mobiles with a remote and choice of music. Who cares if it doesn't match perfectly with our theme. At least it does what it is supposed to!

While a tad more expensive than most other baby carriers, BabyBjörn carriers offer parents some wonderful design features thatmake it well worth the extra money. By allowing you to hold your babysnugly against your chest, the carrier promotes a sense of comfort andcloseness between a parent and a child. It also allows you to maintaineye contact with and talk to your little one during trips to the store, walks around the house, and short hikes (for both mom and dad). Thecarrier's other big advantage is that it frees up both your hands whileyou carry your infant. The black carrier consists of a large triangularfront piece that supports baby's head and body, along with a set ofthick padded straps that are worn like a shoulder-and-waist harness.Newborns and smaller babies should always ride rear-facing in thecarrier, while older babies who can hold their heads upright unassistedcan ride forward-facing and enjoy the view ahead of them. Made ofmachine-washable 100 percent cotton, the carrier can be easily adjustedfrom the front for your baby's size. Although the carrier has beentested for use with babies who weigh from 8 to 25 pounds, some parentsfound that the carrier became uncomfortable to wear and placed a lot ofstrain on the lower back when it was used to carry a child weighingmore than 20 pounds. --Chris Burns ... I'm a nurse at CHOP (the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) and we use the Boppy pillow all the time.whether it is to prop a baby up to sleep or to help those babies with reflux or breathing problems have an easier time, pretty much every baby in the hospital has one of these.Granted I'm not a mom (yet) so I have no idea about breastfeeding and a boppy, but it is helpful with bottle feeding.I am going to make sure that my children have boppy pillows.if nothing else they have cute prints on the covers.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without
The boppy really helped my nursing experience!!!I could switch from one side to the other effortlessly, and as I got better I could even eat a sandwich or have a drink while nursing. As my son got older I used it for tummy time and while he was learning how to sit up.Occasionally, I'd even find my husband asleep on the floor using the boppy has his own personal pillow.Bobby has a great variety of designs, and is very well made.A must have for any mom, regardless if you nurse or not!I'm now expecting my second child and this is definitely going to be a necessity.

    Editorial Review

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I knowwhen she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year isbrought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You'reExpecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "WhatYour Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month'sCheckups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May BeConcerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts,the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and siblingrelationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many waysof stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers inPart Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on commonchildhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particularstrength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition forboth mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latestrecommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectivesare controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), thisbook remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as theytoddle through their baby's first year. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too calloused for my families needs
Let me first state that every child is different and every household has different needs. One method of childrearing may work for one family and child but work horribly for the next.

This book did not fit well or feel right to my family at all. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief at most of the methods they advise. For example, they strongly advocate letting your child `cry it out' especially at night. I tried this and it was heart wrenching for my husband and I, not to mention extremely stressful for my son. We discarded that method very quickly. We now respond to my son's needs when he expresses them. This book gives a quiet undertone that if you pamper your child too much then you're going to end up with a spoilt brat. I say that's rubbish.

Also, this book strongly discourages co-sleeping, a method that works very well for my family. I'll be darned if I'm going to get up when my son wakes for a feeding, nurse him, lull him back to sleep, and then try to get myself settled for sleep. I can't tell you how much better our son and I slept when we decided to just put him in the bed with us. Yes, there are arguments on both sides stating pros and cons. You just need to be smart about it.

This book has a very patronizing tone leaving you feel like you need to rule over your child with an iron fist or you'll be left with a kid that walks all over you. Everything about this book felt very calloused and cruel.

The only redeeming aspect of this book is that it does serve as a good reference as far as developmental milestones. It's good for reference, and that's pretty much it.

I strongly advise parents to explore a vast array of books as well as going with their gut. One method that works for one baby may not work for another; every baby is different and has different needs. This book did not work for us. We found `The Baby Book' by Dr. Sears to fit the needs of our family much more appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars make sure you get and review the 2nd edition, NOT the first
The problem with the previous reviewer's comments is that she's looking at the older edition of the book. THe 2nd edition, published in 2003 clearly states on page 437:

"The AAP recommends that breastfeeding continue for AT LEAST a full year and then for as long as baby and mother both want to keep it up..... Many women choose to continue nursing into the second year and beyond, and that's fine.... Older children who breastfeed are just as likely to be secure, happy, and independent as those who wean early."

PLUS -- there's an entire chapter dedicated to breastfeeding... with tons of reasons why it's a good thing. So I don't get why so many reviewers here keep on blasting this book for not being pro-breastfeeding.This book is so well balanced on so many issues -- like co-sleeping and baby wearing, etc. Looking at a ten year old version of the book that's been passed down from friend to friend and then REVIEWING it here -- instead of actually going out to the store or library to get the actual current book is unfair.

This book has been so helpful to me. As a first time parent, this book had all the answers I needed. Sure, I may not agree with everything in the book, but I'm intelligent enough to not take everything I read and treat it as gospel. I'm able to make my own decision when it comes to parenting, and not only does this book give me the tools to do that, but the authors even encourage that parents ultimately do what feels best to them.

    I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars I threw this book in the trash can... literally
I didn't want any other parents getting their hands on it.I have several issues with this book.Their view on breastfeeding is that you should wean at age one or you will have problems.Even the AAP and World Health Organization recommends that you breastfeed for at least two years and let your baby self-wean.Also, they repeatedly call parents who won't let their babies cry it out 'soft'.If my baby is crying, I'm going to her: enough said. Also, they give only negatives and no positives to co-sleeping.I really liked their pregnancy book, but this one is garbage and I got the Dr Sears 'The Baby Book' instead. ... Editorial Review

In this corner... it's the Diaper Champ. Standing a bit tallerthan the competition, this wondrous contraption actually uses regulargarbage bags, making it super economical (no refills, hooray!). It alsoholds a few more diapers than other pails we've tried. To use it,simply drop a diaper in and flip the handle. To empty it, just unlockit and remove the bag. But the true test of a diaper pail is its smellcontrol, right? Overall, most moms thought that the Champ deserved itstitle, and only a few detected an occasional escaped odor or two. Itis a bit difficult to open (hint: take it slow), but for thoseof you with a curious and experimental toddler in your house, this maybe okay. --Melissa Wilson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT
We didn't want to spend a fortune on a diaper pail and refills, so we opted for the Diaper Champ. We absolutely love it. We have used it for three months now and have had no problems with smells of any kind. Best of all, you can use any kind of bag, including reused plastic grocery bags!

5-0 out of 5 stars So easy to use!
I bought this with my son in April 2004 and love this item. I have found that it is super easy to change out the bags and even easier to use. It works one handed. I am starting to potty train my son, but he still has mistakes in diapers, so this still gets use. It is so easy to use that he always puts his own diaper in there and can make it go "bye-bye" on his own.
I am exzpecting another child in August 2005 and will continue to use this diaper champ.
    I highly recommend this item.
